TOP DRESSING and Top Soiling Your Lawn to Fix BARE SPOTS

- Bare spots in your lawn are a huge pain. Top dressing is a good option to give grass a place to spread into bare areas and fill in nice and full. In this video, I used Black Kow manure 0.5-0.5-0.5 to topdress an area that was torn up and left bare and ugly. Fixing an ugly lawn is a struggle that every lawn enthusiast will have to encounter, whether it be a bare spot or an entire ugly lawn. I plan to sand level this spot at some point also but I want to wait for the Bermuda grass to fill in the bare spot first. The topdressing or top soiling actually is pretty level to start with so a sand leveling should be no big deal. This bare spot of mine can represent any bare spot in your lawn, so follow along to see how this bare spot fills in over the next couple of weeks.

I can say from experience this works. You can use just about anything with organic material (top soil, potting soil, compost).

I love the occasional flashback to “idiots are dumb”..lol... FYI, black kow also makes actual bagged topsoil, and it’s awesome... and won’t decompose like manure. Much easier to spread also

Great video .. I bought a new build home and they put in some SOD November 2020 shortly after it started to snow .. I’m noticing large gaps in the grass as they didn’t do the best job laying it .. should I use this method to fill in those dead areas and gaps ... ?

Hopefully SUPER soon. I am in north Arkansas and this transition zone has been brutally cold so all of the Bermuda is lagging so bad! I really want to see it spread sideways but non of my Bermuda is doing that yet.

Truly appreciate this video, thank you very much. I'm a first time home owner just getting into lawn care, and am just learning about top dressing. I have a question. Did you completely cover the grass? From what I've learned thus far you should leave it exposed and not smother it, so that it can receive sunlight.
Also how would this work in combination with aeration?
Top dressing is great after aeration because you fill the holes with good stuff. I aerated before I sand leveled last year to get sand down in the holes.
As for completely covering the grass - it’s probably best not to completely cover it but with bermudagrass, it comes right through. Especially with dirt because as rain comes, the material breaks down and falls down below the top of the grass. I covered my grass with sand last year to level it and it grew through just fine.

The more I think about it, the better it sounds. You should sell grass ties. You know there are lawn care people that would love to wear that to church.

I did do an update when it was about half way filled in a few weeks later but I think I forgot to do it after it had completely filled in. That triangle is the tee box for the first hole of the mini golf course and you can see it in the video where left tool and I play a full round BUT it is scalped just like all the other mini golf holes in that video. As an update though... the grass filled in perfectly and looks as nice as the rest of my lawn now 😁

50lb bag at 0.5-0.5-0.5 has 0.25lbs of N-P-K in what looks to be about 20sf which is equal to 12.5lbs N-P-K per 1000sf 🤣 Can't wait to see what happens!

As in a light overspray of roundup. Some customers (in my experience) will attempt to spray their own beds for weeds. Some sprayers continue to spray when nozzle is pressed. I hold my wand upside down and I do spray beds. Just like walking through a freshly sprayed bed and random spots appear a couple of days later. Not saying it's the case, just sharing one of my experiences! 🤷♂️
