@@tomschuette3730 From the generation of Costacurta, Maldini, Nesta and Fabio Cannavaro (the last three being the best trio I ever watched) to the one of Barzagli, Chielini, Bonucci. Italy always produced the best world class defenders.
Not to mention the generation of Baressi, Scirea, Bergomi and Gentile in 80s.

I agree with you and I think Italy proved it at this tournament.Brand new Italy, but the old ways are still there. Italy played possession football up until they met Spain who are the masters of the possession game,so Mancini switched it to defensive counterattack, knowing that. That's how Italy scored first and took Spain to penalties. It looked sloppy but there was method to Mancini's madness. And that's where England went wrong, playing the defesive counter attack against Italy who are the masters of it after scoring early was poor strategy 🇮🇹💙🇮🇹👍

I love Chiellini character! Maybe It's just me, but I really pick Bonucci as man of the match against England... He was a beast, including at the penalty's, he take a marvelous penalty at the most critical moment, not mention the equalize goal and his defensive work during the game was superb including moving the ball from behind.

Chiellini wasn't even exposed by Saka on that foul, he made a poor judgement call when he could've cleared the ball with his head but he let it drop and Saka's got him mot his skill. So it was more of Chiellini error than something Saka did.
True, was easy clear for Chellini, but he knew how to fix it.
It wasn't an error, it was a dirty foul. Chiellini knew what he was doing. I didn't realise something like that was allowed.

I highly reccomend watching highlighs from Italy-Spain Euro 2008. 13 years and Chiellini still pure class. With Bonucci and Barzagli they probably were the best defense block ever.
They had some great defenses in the early 90s too with Baresi and Maldini.
Sure they did! Milans block with Nesta and Maldini or Stam, Italian 2006 Cannavaro-Materazzi and many more... But three seasons with Conte the BBC trio did unbelievably well, todays Inter with De Vrij, Skriniar and Bastoni is similar but not that perfect

I am very happy for both Chiellini and Bonucci. I think they are the perfect defensive duo... with Chiellini as an old style phisical and fast defender (Cannavaro style) ... and Bonucci with fantastic technical skills (he could easily play in midfield... let's say Maldini or Nesta style)... working perfectly with the off-side line.... top attitude in the dressing room and an example for young players. This was their 4th European final... and they lost the first 3 (2 champions league finals with Juve and the 2012 Eurocup with Italy)... God could not leave them without a major international trophy before their retirement

The good news for Italy is that even if Chiellini retires after this, they've got Bastoni (probably the best young CB in Italy last season) and Mancini (top defender playing with weak defensive teammates at Roma) to come in. So they should be okay for the WC too. Calabria, the Milan RB, was unlucky not to be called up too.
What they really need before the WC is a top CF, but that may be hard to find before then.

Frank Leboeuf is spot on. Gareth Southgate don’t know how to manage England. Maldini used everyone he has at his disposal but Gareth used only what he think is his best 11 or best penalty takers. He doesn’t have any idea how to break down Italy defence. He has so many attacking players which he didn’t even want to gamble with. Calvert went to euros to warn the bench. Grealish is like a part time player.
Mourinho was right. Gareth should swap/rest players when possible especially since they qualified in the group. Let others have a chance to show what they can do.

The Italians played dirty??? Hahahaha the English put on a masterclass in diving yesterday! How many times were Sterling and Kane flopping on the ground crying to the ref??? Italy absolutely DOMINATED England yesterday. England came out and played good to great football for about 25-35mins and then that was it.....Kane was completely shut down by Chiellini and Bonucci and Verratti and Jorghino were toying with the English midfield. England does what England does best, they choke! In typical English fashion the pressure got to them playing at Home and they put on a dreadful performance. They were outclassed in every aspect of the game. Mancini made the correct tactical changes while Southgate didn't. There was absolutely no fight in the English squad while the Italians maintained their composure and played their game.
And I'm not really sure what kind of Rebuild you're talking about lol we have Bastoni/Acerbi/Mancini/Romagnoli to fill in for Bonucci & Chiellini. The rest of team is solid. Donnarumma 22, Chiesa 23, Barella 24, Locatelli 23, Berardi 26, Pessina 24 & Raspodori 21...plus young players that weren't even in the squad like Sandro Tonali(21), Moise Kean(21), Zaniolo (21), Daniel Maldini(19), Sebastiano Esposito(19) & Nicolo Rovella(19).... while also having Verratti(28), Jorghino(29), Insigne(29), Di Lorenzo (27), Spinazzola(28), Florenzi(29) all in their prime right now.....Italy is looking just fine for the future bud. No Rebuild necessary.

We have some strong players, but not at the level of the past teams as name. Usually, players of the national team came from only big teams like Juventus or Milan who were constantly playing the Champions league, while this year we got a lot of players from minor clubs. Compared to the 2006 formation, when Basically only Grosso was the "outsider", and you'll see the difference.

in the Italy Spain match it was rightly pointed out that Spain had forced Italy on the defensive and did not deserve to lose, but why not do the same with England seen in the Final? They shot ONLY ONCE on goal and then for large stretches of the game they were 11 in their half of the field. Italy has had 3 or 4 good chances, but it certainly deserved to finish champion; why is it not also said of Southgate that he produced so much defensiveness (goal long undefeated) and for example yesterday he stumbled the changes made on purpose to shoot penalties?

The best ones aren't always the winners however, the best football team won "Italy". To be frank Italian team was always my favourite candidate to win this Euro 2020 without being an offensive football team, so what they did on the pitch was unbelievable because of their extraordinary campaing. Well done Italy.

100 years of defensive tactic? Italy started as an attacking team. Catenaccio was invented only in the 50s after the Superga tragedy and the death of most Italian National team players (plane crash). Already in the 80s Italy was playing attacking and had great strikers such as Rossi. Only with a pair of managers and coaches the Italian team played defensively again in the last decades. Just to think in 2006 when Italy won the world Cup they scored 12 goals with 10 different players. Litteraly the whole team was attacking.
Those journalists are not so informed or are simply too much selfcentered.
But at the end of the story the current Italy knows how to defend, how to counterattack, how to keep ball possession and how to crash the opponent. Simply good football, at least for now.
With all the talk ....there is no trainer/manager in England who can manage....the media...pundits...fans...staff and players.

I am amazed that here they only speak and do not even show any images. Usually when analyzing some player, the words are accompanied by some pictures, some actions on the field of that player.

Im no euro coach but the logical thing to do would be offence offence offence. Instead they bottled it and only managed 2 shots on goal in 120 minutes. Trust me i'm English and I'm mad at Southgate for not going for it after the 1st goal. To leave the player makers and attackers on the bench and play with 7 defenders when Italy were controlling the ball I truely do not understand. In anycase England were inches away from winning it in extra time and just bottled it on the penalties. Rashfords was the worst penalty because the guy can smack a ball hard and scores penalties for fun in the champions league and premier league. In anycase England had a good tournament and Southgate did well and made all the right choices until his mistake in the final.

Chellini is definitely the best centre back of this generation. Godin is only other player who can come even little closer.
