Talking about Italian Planes, the Savoia Marchetti S56 Floatplane, in my opinion, is one of the most pure and uncomplicatedly beautiful designs in early aviation..
So the fuselage is literally a ducted fan?!?! I think it's actually kinda cool looking in an extremely goofy way LMAO. Not every day I see an aircraft I've never heard of. Thanks for this Drone 👍
I've always loved the out of the box oddities both land and air. This is certainly in the top 5 aviation ones and why the Italians have no equal in aircraft design.
Been aware of this design for years now, I always wondered why it wasn't followed up with a twin-tube/motor airframe with center mounted fuslage/empennage fitted and suitable wings
5 years after the Wright Bros got it right. A glimpse into how fast aerial flight would develop. An F16 was recently tested in a dogfight piloted by AI.
Some say it inspired things to come, such as the first jet engine concept (Whittle). After all, a lot of countries showed interest, including USA’s NACA
@@stoopingfalcon891 Those must have been exciting times for discoveries. Sometimes I recall the story of the invention of the telephone (by Italian Meucci), but attributed to Bell, who literally stole it from him. It took a century for the American Congress to recognize the real inventor, probably because after all, Bell was not American. The funny thing is that it could be proven that someone was a descendant of Meucci, that could probably go after AT&T for trillions. Luckily, there is not know one. Imagine how Nikola Tesla is barely recognized compared to what he did for humanity. The list goes on and on...
Idk what Italy was smoking back then but when you look at their laughable pedal-car looking tanks as well as Mussolini you know it must have been pretty strong stuff
To be fair, frank whittle knew of this when he made the jet turbine engine and decided to make the blades in-line. Then later when he added a turbofan which still used propellers to push cold air through and around the JetBlue turbine making it more efficient and powerful. But my god did some wonky stuff come out of Italy and they weren’t afraid of or constrained by the aesthetics.

Russian's made some ridiculous, odd ball designs as well. You ever seen the Caspian Sea Monster or the WIG? Weird ass ground-effect vehicles.
His "Human Head" Anti-Rollover Bar was his greatest invention....
Gotta love the Venturi.

The tube is a giant wing. Theres an old paper plane design that uses the principle. Gets great airtime.
Those tiny ducted fans wont provide anything.
Learn something new everyday! 🎉
👍🙏👍
I like inventive solutions as the Convair piston engine airliners "augmentor tube" where the functions of exhausting and cooling engines are combined.
Yes.... beautifully efficient.
Always found this an interesting plane. Cool vid.
Glad you enjoyed it
I'm imagining a WW2 timeline where you're an allied soldier hunkered down in a trench, and this ridiculous thing flies by and drops a bomb on you.
It could also be the inspiration for the jet engine concept 😉
Stipa got the idea while eating cannelloni pasta noodles.
🙂
Back then anything was possible. Maybe. So every thing thought of was tried I think it's cool and flying towards you it kinda looks like a TBM
wow the first after burner
What might be interesting would be to apply this overall shape and design to a zeppelin.
Ironically he wasn't wrong. Today we call it a ducted fan and it's experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Especially in drones.
Someone needs to stuff a hi bypass turbofan in one of them.
Probably flew about twice and crashed a lot certainly not developed , reminded me of a similar American short plane also unsuccessful.
Could have done with vectored thrust, for turning.
It kinda has vector thrust with the elevators and rutter in the ducted flow.
That center of lift vs. control surface gives me shivers. I would not like that.
While I enjoyed the content and the presentation I unfortunately got rather annoyed with the stuttering of the Canned footage!!! 🤠📸

And that was the end of the human piloted airplanes 😏
Ai and drones is just miles ahead of human input.
Were in a new world. An ai directed one 😬
It's like a flying beer can.
🙂
What on Earth is a "deducted fan"? TFP
How does anyone know it won't work if nobody tries it? I would be willing to bet they learned a lot from that design.

@@Dronescapes Yeah. Such a simple concept as a ducted fan led to modern day jet fighters. That's a bit mind boggling in it's way.
Hard to prove they were connected, but it is certainly possible
@@Dronescapes I agree.

Extremely high whetted area.
As an italian i can say you have a good pronunciation, are you italian? You sound exactly like an italian when you say something italian.
The narrator is from Texas 😉

Stupid hubris to be comparing a hollow ducted fan to a machinery filled turbojet. Makes him look very petty over time.
What is all this feet, pounds and inches.🤔😡
Looks like a cross between a hairdryer and a midget submarine
🤔🙂
