The high bypass turbofan jet engine, the type of jet engines flying today was handed to the British Government by Frank Whittle and they pissed it away! Wow!
It’s frustrating to see the short sightedness of the powers that be in England when it comes the potential of the jet engine, just like the American powers that be when approached by the Wright Brothers and their airplane.

Imagine had the Meteor been ready in 1940, would the Battle of Britain even have happened? Perhaps, I suspect Germany would have managed to push a competitor out earlier as well.
AN inventor, not THE inventor. The turbojet engine was "invented" independently about five times. After all, it's not a huge leap from a steam turbine or a turbo-supercharger to a turbojet engine. Mostly just metallurgy and fuel control. Most of the credit for the original idea belongs to Hero of Alexandria.
Sounds easy.
They were determined not to get Whittle. Fortunately they failed.
Germans didn't get credit?
They get credit for the first operational jet plane. Why do you think they deserve more credit than that?
The German design is what modern engines are all based on…
