    I bought and built one in December 20. I had no issues whatsoever with the electronics, but then I was VERY careful when laying in the wires for the LEDs. I think it's incredibly good value for money and will be buying more of their products. Not because they're cheap, but because they're interesting,

    I bought this train and I thing it is a great model with moving valve gear, though the instructions don't show how to set this properly
    I changed the motorisation and gearing. I have also moved a flange wheel on wheel set back so it corners better, and used a bluebrix speed controller. Really great set

    Nice, I ordered (on Amazon for 90€, 120$ is too much) and built mine 2 months ago. I was lucky to see the QJs still in real action in 2008, and this is a quite accurate model. It is great to see Chinese companies embrace their heritage and resources and come up with great own creations.
    I liked the build very much, there are only very slight flaws which can be overcome (needless to say: run it on r120 curves, not r40 Lego!). But overall it is the most complete widely commercially available Lego-compatible steam locomotive up-to-date. Also, Mould King parts are excellent in quality, among the best I know.
    Btw. This is NOT a bootleg product. Lego's patent on bricks seized decades ago, any company can produce and sell them. Only companies directly copying sets are bootleggers, everyone else is a legitimate business and hopefully finally healthy competition to the insanely-priced, lazy monopolist Lego.

    • @orangecayman520

    • @ronik24
      @ronik24 4 роки тому +4

      @@orangecayman520 Yes, and this loco definitely is worth it. It is a massive, complete build with many technic components and regular bricks with more than 1500 pieces. As mentioned, the brick quality is excellent, some of the best I have come across. The model is 60 cm long. And it is very well constructed, building it is fun. The construction is completely full of parts, not an empty shell like Lego locomotives. Together with all the features and all electronic components this would be at least a 250€ Lego set. This is simply the most complex Lego railroad model widely available commercially to date.

    Glad you reviewed this. I bought a JieStar Building Blocks Set MOC BR01 Steam Train Locomotive Bricks Model Kids Toys 59004 for under $AUD 85 ($US 54.50 approx) and was initially impressed. However, as I got further into the build I found many quality issues. There was no base plate for the loco, just built up tiles. Result was that it bent like a banana. Solved by Lego reinforcements.
    Eventually, I got the base assembled and kind of working. Then I tried to assemble the body. Oh dear! So many connections used a single stud and a one or two stud tile, that I eventually gave up trying. Each time I tried to lift the model to add parts something fell off, or an entire assembly broke.
    My analysis is that you need “superglue” to assemble this beast. 4 attempts and I’ve shelved the train, and all thoughts of a cheap unpowered model to which I could add Lego power functions, have evaporated. However, perhaps I can use so parts to build a genuine 80-90% Lego steam train.
    In summary, avoid JieStar and try real Lego. Even used is better. There’s a reason Lego bricks and models are expensive. Research, development and quality control; all of which seem missing from Chinese “Rego” products. 😢

      They have good models also, that seem to use better bricks somehow. The GE ES44AC union pacific yellow diesel lock of Jiestar is very nice. Brick quality is better than that of the BR01, almost equal to Lego and the model is a nice build. The electrics are simple but problem free. The loc is quite hollow, but the scale bigger though and given the size it reduces the weight. This one costed me about 35 euros from China and was a massive hit. I bought the BR01 just for 22 euros also straight from China. I had two wrong parts included and thus two missing. Not much of a problem to overcome. Brick quality was good, but not comparable with that of the Union Pacific. I had some curved plates, but nothing a simple hair dryer couldn't handle in straightening it out. Though the model is nice to look at, it is only for that purpose. I don't know why they even bothered to add gears, since the way it is set up it can't take any bend. One big plus over lego: the color are consistent in their hue.

    • @ianhollis51
      @ianhollis51 Місяць тому

      @@Ohne_Silikone Thanks for reply. It never dawned on me to use a hair dryer to unwrap the bent plates. However, since it it isn’t going to be a good runner, I’ll look at the Union Pacific. It really is a pity that Lego seem to have abandoned steam engines on their working sets. I’m not a diesel or electric fan; I love steam. 👍🚂

      @ToledoRails be advised, the model tends to lock up around the Cylinders when the engine runs, as the bootleg pieces have more edges, so I would replace the pistons on it, also, I'm not a very experienced builder, so mine was very fragile, so watch out for that as well.

    I have no issues with running the locomotive. The wiring took some tries as they don't tell you where to tug the wires as you are building. Other than that the mechanism ran smoothly after I took it off the rail and fiddled around the bars.
    I wonder if I can scan the stickers and reprint it on a clear decal sheet.

    Mine works great! Seriously download the app for this thing (scan the page in the instruction booklet or message mould king) and you will have full use of the variable speed option. Also if you wanna make it a good runner you need to bevel the four wheels inboard of the drive wheels on the inside edge with a dremel. This prevents them from rubbing on the drive wheels. I remove the ladders when in use because they have a tendency to hit the hitch and cause derailments off of corners. You will want to lube the moving parts to get the most out of it as well. I used a product called krown t-40. A moly based graphite would also work well but may be messy. Right now I'm running 7 cars on mine and can run more very easily. Battery life seems to be maxed at about an hour of nonstop use. The only real gripe I have is how the front guide axle is held on, which is easily fixable. This review is wrong on so many levels. This is my first Lego style train and I couldn't be happier. 4.7 out of 5

      Yes
      1) Use a speed controller from BlueBrix or lego
      2) Change the gearing to lower the speed
      3) Change the position of the front flange gear 1 axle back to sit goes round corners more smoothly
      4) Change the 7 axle for the valve gear for 2x4 axles as the valve gear is not meant to be synced which means it get forced by using a single axle
      5) Make sure you set up the connecting rods and valve gear correctly, the instructions do not give the detail, but the Lego Emerald night will help. Start with the valve gear in neutral (aligned with the centre), then offset to give the required effect.
      It is worth the changes, it is an excellent model - a little fragile as it is full of detail with moving valve gear . It is a good price on Ali-express and I got mine for £62.

The real Lego straight tracks are ridiculously expensive so I have bought many on Aliexpress for around 35 cent each. I had never bought the Horizon Express so now I bought 2x on Aliexpress and powered by 2x Buwizz (I already owned). Of course the curved tracks are too curved so I have been sawing and glueing them to get a low gradient curves. So now I got a mega 180 curve with a diameter of around 2,5 meter and one of around 1,80m. I have sloped the curved tracks so the Horizon Express and go on Buwizz fast mode 9V on maximum and keep in the track! Haha. @@ToledoRails I've also bought this QJ Steam loc and I think it's fantastic. My stickers were correct on transparent sticker sheet. Are you sure your stickers are wrong? When I first wanted to take the sticker off it came off with the white under sheet. But the cut is not very good so I bit difficult to get the transparent sticker off. Please check the stickers!
      I did not even install the included battery because I used a Buwizz battery that is the exact same size. Before I installed the lights I put some 2K glue on the led and first tried it out on a simple battery box and that worked.
      I didn't like the way they connected the wheels from left and right side with the 9 axle for those side silver thin beams. So I installed 2x 5 axle with stopper and offset the wheels 6-12 o'clock. So now the resistance is more evenly divided. I also oiled almost every moving part and now it actually sounds smooth. Together with the Buwizz I can accelerate slowly instead of the on/off. The wheels are pretty far apart so it does not like bends but I have modified most of my tracks to be low gradient curves. So now it drives smoothly through my living room. Funny thing was I ordered the locomotive and separate wagons but they did not have the locomotive in stock. So I ordered it from a seller with shipping from the Czech Republic and it arrived in 3 days! I probably still need to wait a couple weeks for the wagons to be delivered from China. This set would be 3x the price if from real Lego.

    Dude, that Mohawk from brickmania is $2,500! That's more then twice the price of a fully functional HO model of such a locomotive, with all the bells and whistles. That is insanely expensive.

      Funny you mention that @Midwest Railfan. I used a speed build of the set on UA-cam slowed to -0.25 and then painstakingly replicated it in Mecabricks, whom only has 100 percent legit Lego parts. It's unfinished, but I only have to build the tender

      1) Change the front flange axle to axle 2 to improve corning
      2) Change the 7 axle pivot for the valve gear to 2x4 axles to prevent problems strain on this, you can see problem in this video
      3) Correctly set up the 90 degree offset on connecting rods and and valve gear
      3) Use a speed controller and/or change the internal gearing - very easy - to lower the speed.

    Most importantly, what is the quality and compatibility like? Since lego pieces can get very pricy a more affordable alternative isn't a bad idea if the quality is as good as legos.

    • @VarietyGamerChannel
      @VarietyGamerChannel 3 роки тому

      It's less about quality of the blocks and more about the design. Quality and fit is fine. The molds are basically made with the same precision machinery as genuine lego parts-lego also having manufacturies in china. It's the design of this particular locomotive that fails on a few fronts, but that can be fixed/customized.

      It going to be tricky because this QJ uses two 1/2 x17 long lift arm for the wheel linkage which LEGO doesn’t make. I will say it was a very interesting build though.

    The LEDs are nifty Indeed. With my sons BR18 two wires came undone in the wire connection, but as theLEDs function anyway, I don't believe they had a purpose anyway. I don’t have had any issues with mould kings power boxes. Even if the leds died, at a bit over 70 euros nowadays it is still a steal. Mould King is on the good track. I think your strong overal evaluation at 6:30 is just based on your sample of 1? and thus ridiculous in its severity. You seem to be biased that way, all the more because you are looking past Legos increasing quality issues at ever more ridiculous pricing. Besides lego itself was a nock off, before if adjusted some aspects of their bricks, pattented it and then claimed the whole market as a monopoly.
