This was Volition's one chance to potentially rise up against Rockstar's recently lacking reputation, and what did they do? They shot themselves in the foot.

The weird thing is that, I don't even think it's millennial or gen Z. To quote Yahtzee, they gentrified gangster culture. They turned it into hustle culture but we use guns. Part of the insanity of old Saints is that they are unashamedly gangbangers, even after all is said and done. And speaking of that, I'd prefer that the series ended with SR4. Cos at that point, there was nowhere left to go. Certainly not in terms of stakes. And it felt like a celebration of the series, with shedloads of fanservice, using its premise to do shit that it wouldn't be able to in earlier games. My point is, Saints Row '22 is unnecessary. It feels more like Embracer or THQ Nordic or whoever owns the license saw money on the table and wanted to market the game to people like me (I'm technically Gen Z). Except it failed on all fronts. Like, this is a game I'm gonna see on plenty of Worst Of lists, without any caveats.
Yeah it turns out to be a skin deep lip service of various cultures. That's is kinda the issue with the franchise, being further and further from straight gangster culture into a pop culture melting pot. But at least 3/4/GoH is still have some meat on them, while the reboot just go "ha ha student loan let's kill these whacky archetypes" and not elaborate on it.

There is demand for a classic style Saints Row game. It was a good time for a reboot, it just needed good direction and sense of vision. Getting back to the basics with a fleshed out world, open ended story, well written characters and in depth customization. Put virtually any fan of the first three games in charge of determining the vision of SR 2022, and we wouldve almost certainly gotten a better title.
Saints Row Reboot is basically what Saints Row 2 was very critical of. I mean, you had a evil corporation with a evil CEO was basically trying to gentrify Stilwater

This game is ironically the same thing that Saints Row 2 was being critical of. You had a villain that consisted of a evil corporation that was trying to gentrify Stilwater and this game basically looks like the result of that gentrification process by Ultor
I would've loved a Remake of SR1 that added activities and mechanics from SR2 and TT (while maintaining SR1 mechanics) with updated graphics still faithfully following the 90-00s aesthetic, gleaming bling, and ill-fitting clothing. A time capsule of Wu-tang Clan, spinner rims, sagging pants and side ways pistols.
It just brings me a considerable amount of joy knowing that these cocky developers and pretty much everyone involved with this game can’t go online without seeing it being ripped to shreds. And still developers will continue to blatantly ignore fans. I don’t think there’s enough outrage/backlash, I don’t see why so many people are okay with these practices but whatever.

Saints row has always been my favorite gaming series of all time, 1st game in the series - 4th game, now seeing this it did an absolute 180 and completely tarnished what once was to me. This gave me real depression.
From my standpoint nothings changed since 2s release. Shit just kept gettin more cliche and cheesy. They strayed further from what a gangsta free roam should be with every drop. Now all of the sudden people don't like it cuz they finally see what it really is.

Maybe i don't understand what that "power fantasy" actually means in here but last time i checked millennials are the ones born between 1981-1996 and nothing in here is relatable to that age group, where is all the extremely edgy jokes on taboo things? where is the morally questionable stuff like Bum Fights? where is the gross stuff you saw in Jackass? or the soundtrack filled with songs like Smack My Bitch Up? That is stuff millennials can relate as we grew up with it.
I can't even forgive some of the 'buggy' mechanics in this game. When they did happen (rarely) in the previous games such as SR2 / SR3, it was often pretty funny. Make that aspect consistent, along with a brand new floppy story, annoying characters, and irritating writing, and you have a recipe for disaster... 😪

I still remember how special my first playthrough of SR 2 felt. I spend long seasons in between playing to keep it that way, and it does work, because I still get lost often.
and no police came, there was no gameplay in the process, no mechanics about it, apparently the whole thing was just a cutscene. then it made a hard cut to having a shootout with somebody, i already forgot who and i just watched the video. to be clear i never played any of the saint's row games. but i heard about them. but i'm not going to play this one is for certain.
I feel like they were tying to play it too safe on this game and didn’t try to revert back to how the first two games were. It could of been a whole lot better had they just combined the things from the first two into the reboot as far as the open world goes and make the NPC’s actually feel like they’re living with their own personalties, The amount of detail that the NPC’s do in SR2 is really cool to see. both games either way have their own unique features
Considering that games like MW2019 and Destroy All Humans have moments that are not in the "too safe" category, that does raise questions. Games like Detroit: Become Human and Watch Dogs 2 are other contenders to be noted, as well. Even Death Stranding.
It stinks Fornite every where. Also the technical issues, the awfull physics, The arquitecture is ok and even there is some good looking grafity art around the city but Santo Ileso is so lifeless, I was thinking: "Well maybe moders will be able to fix this mess" But the rabbit hole goes so deep that I really doub it, not sure if they can fix the terrible shooting, the terrible weapon desighn and texturing, the awfull driving and the repetitive contetn like the "Ventures" it seems Volition and Deep Silver´s only objective was to sink the franchise, they did it well if you ask me.
well, i don't think there's even a tangible reason why modders would even want to fix it. at least with games like cyberpunk 2077 you have something to work with, but even just the writing itself just kills that off completely 'cuz ain't no way anybody wants to sit through those janky-ass dialogues. i even doubt the devs care that much to even go out of their way to make good modding support. this game is probably just going to bomb and be forgotten about if i'm being honest.

The game plays like a game from 2006, SR4 killed the franchise as they couldn’t go anymore over the top or make a more brilliant game than that and instead fell back to being a terrible GTA Clone whilst somehow disappointing the people that liked the first 2 games over the games built around pure fun in 3 and 4
Well, for SR4 they could expand Saints Row conquest of America, similar as Drug Cartels, Mexican/Latin gangs in south border etc. Alien stuff and destroy of Earth was poor excuse.

Like with SR2, you needed to fill up your Respect Bar every single time before you can do another mission, the controls are weird (A side effect of being a game that released back before controls were effectively standardized to the same butons/triggers in all games now), and the missions just aren’t all that memorable and just it just felt like a GTA Clone Though this reboot truly is special in that somehow both the group that loves 1 and 2 as well as the group that loves 3 and 4 don’t like this game

Saints row the third was ok because the gameplay was good but they turned the old gangsters into movie stars plus they did Johnny Gatt dirty by killing him off in a plane and the Villians were awful and they added a Flying bike and a VTOL

Cyberpunk wasn’t unplayable at release. Can’t hear this BS no more. I put about 300 hours in with the release version on steam and had only one crash during that time and other than that only minor bugs. Most bugs were encountered in the last console gen abut just because their hardware is way too weak for this game. It just shouldn’t have released for the last console generation.

Greetings to all my homies from discord! On a more serious note, I think one “redeeming quality” of this game’s combat is how it encourages movement but that is unfortunately nullified by how most enemies are bullet sponges and take more than a few rounds of ammo to die.
@@Kechioma in all honesty, I didn’t even know those options existed. I just went with the default difficulty when it prompted me and continued my playthrough. The only time I used the options menu was to alter graphics and check if subtitles were on. Thanks for the heads up though, I’ll check those options when I can.
The game ain't awful but it sucks compared to two it became less unique and became more boring it probably would have helped if you could replay mission you know because what's the point of unlocking so much stuff and then you can't use in any missions for fun oh and the fact you had to pay for cheat codes that right there was disgusting

Customization is better in sr2, the map is better in sr2, the npcs are better in sr2, the side activities are better in sr2, the main caimpaign is better in sr2. The only thing that sr3 has that was better than sr2 is the gameplay, the mission design is better as well but there are so few missions compared to sr2. If you're not doing missions then you're problably bored running around steelport, the most bland and lifeless city ever seeign in a video game. There's nothing interesting going on making exploring the city feel like a chore. Also the upgrade syatem is broken. By the time you beat the game you'll bare have any of them in a good level because it takes a huge ass time to unlock and buy them. They should uave made the story longer so we could properly use them
I encourage everybody to rewatch the ronin cutscenes from saints row 2. Not the gameplay, just the cutscenes. The quality of the writing, delivery of the lines, hell the fight in Johnny's House or Aisha's funeral. The quality is jaw dropping.

It's weird, but as you were naming what was wrong with the game, I was picturing the same with GTA V. GTA has a mission that puts you in a biker bar with no weapons against enemies with cue sticks and broken bottles with no combat form of your own. GTA has many repetitious missions that become tedious after playing them a few times. Like the resupply missions and contract missions.
Previous entries were based around gangs and criminals that EXIST (stereotypical versions but still). I am an ex criminal. Lets just say im not in deep waters anymore, but i can still swim. I'm in this weird spot where I'm Gen Z but I've always related to millennials more and always had more millennial sensibilities, so I'm in a weird spot where even though I AM in the target demographic, it still feels really alien and distant. It's also a game that screams "How do you do, fellow kids?".
As a person who got introduced to the game series seeing clips of the intro and actually got to playing it only at part 2, it is really sad to see what it has been reduced to. Being heavily interested in gang culture and being a San Andreas mega fanboy, I wished I could play Saint's Row. Finally got my hands on 2 a few years later and loved it to death. Played 3. Loved it, even if I can confirm it went in a weird direction but hell I also loved 4 for what it was. I loved the B-movieness of it all and thought that it esentilaly retained that part from 2 to 4 even if the actual genre had a metamorphosis. 3 already had a massive shift in tone, but of course having never played 1, I wouldn't know how different 1 and 2 are. From what I've seen the tone shift is there too though, it's just it was less radical at the time.
It seems like a game that is meant to hold you’re hand through the entire game no matter what difficulty you’re on this game like a repeat of the avengers video game.
I’ve always loved and replayed SR1-4 multiple times for years so I’d consider myself a real fan. That being said after seeing all the gameplay/reviews I would NEVER actually buy this absolute failure of a game being connected to the franchise. You’d have to pay me to actually want to play the game. This is devastating to see where the series went.

The weird thing is that, I don't even think it's millennial or gen Z. To quote Yahtzee, they gentrified gangster culture. They turned it into hustle culture but we use guns. Part of the insanity of old Saints is that they are unashamedly gangbangers, even after all is said and done.
And speaking of that, I'd prefer that the series ended with SR4. Cos at that point, there was nowhere left to go. Certainly not in terms of stakes. And it felt like a celebration of the series, with shedloads of fanservice, using its premise to do shit that it wouldn't be able to in earlier games.
My point is, Saints Row '22 is unnecessary. It feels more like Embracer or THQ Nordic or whoever owns the license saw money on the table and wanted to market the game to people like me (I'm technically Gen Z). Except it failed on all fronts. Like, this is a game I'm gonna see on plenty of Worst Of lists, without any caveats.
Yeah it turns out to be a skin deep lip service of various cultures.
That's is kinda the issue with the franchise, being further and further from straight gangster culture into a pop culture melting pot.
But at least 3/4/GoH is still have some meat on them, while the reboot just go "ha ha student loan let's kill these whacky archetypes" and not elaborate on it.

There is demand for a classic style Saints Row game. It was a good time for a reboot, it just needed good direction and sense of vision. Getting back to the basics with a fleshed out world, open ended story, well written characters and in depth customization.
Put virtually any fan of the first three games in charge of determining the vision of SR 2022, and we wouldve almost certainly gotten a better title.

When they did happen (rarely) in the previous games such as SR2 / SR3, it was often pretty funny.
Make that aspect consistent, along with a brand new floppy story, annoying characters, and irritating writing, and you have a recipe for disaster... 😪

I feel like they were tying to play it too safe on this game and didn’t try to revert back to how the first two games were. It could of been a whole lot better had they just combined the things from the first two into the reboot as far as the open world goes and make the NPC’s actually feel like they’re living with their own personalties, The amount of detail that the NPC’s do in SR2 is really cool to see. both games either way have their own unique features
Considering that games like MW2019 and Destroy All Humans have moments that are not in the "too safe" category, that does raise questions.
Games like Detroit: Become Human and Watch Dogs 2 are other contenders to be noted, as well. Even Death Stranding.

Also the technical issues, the awfull physics, The arquitecture is ok and even there is some good looking grafity art around the city but Santo Ileso is so lifeless, I was thinking: "Well maybe moders will be able to fix this mess" But the rabbit hole goes so deep that I really doub it, not sure if they can fix the terrible shooting, the terrible weapon desighn and texturing, the awfull driving and the repetitive contetn like the "Ventures" it seems Volition and Deep Silver´s only objective was to sink the franchise, they did it well if you ask me.
well, i don't think there's even a tangible reason why modders would even want to fix it. at least with games like cyberpunk 2077 you have something to work with, but even just the writing itself just kills that off completely 'cuz ain't no way anybody wants to sit through those janky-ass dialogues. i even doubt the devs care that much to even go out of their way to make good modding support. this game is probably just going to bomb and be forgotten about if i'm being honest.

Like with SR2, you needed to fill up your Respect Bar every single time before you can do another mission, the controls are weird (A side effect of being a game that released back before controls were effectively standardized to the same butons/triggers in all games now), and the missions just aren’t all that memorable and just it just felt like a GTA Clone
Though this reboot truly is special in that somehow both the group that loves 1 and 2 as well as the group that loves 3 and 4 don’t like this game
The whole reboot is an example of the dev totally didn't do any research at all what makes Saints Row is Saints Row instead including 2010s trend for no reason.

Cyberpunk wasn’t unplayable at release. Can’t hear this BS no more. I put about 300 hours in with the release version on steam and had only one crash during that time and other than that only minor bugs. Most bugs were encountered in the last console gen abut just because their hardware is way too weak for this game. It just shouldn’t have released for the last console generation.

On a more serious note, I think one “redeeming quality” of this game’s combat is how it encourages movement but that is unfortunately nullified by how most enemies are bullet sponges and take more than a few rounds of ammo to die.
Did you touch the challenge options? The combat is overly spongey but you can literally set enemy health to 0 and make them drop ammo consistently.
@@Kechioma in all honesty, I didn’t even know those options existed. I just went with the default difficulty when it prompted me and continued my playthrough. The only time I used the options menu was to alter graphics and check if subtitles were on. Thanks for the heads up though, I’ll check those options when I can.

Customization is better in sr2, the map is better in sr2, the npcs are better in sr2, the side activities are better in sr2, the main caimpaign is better in sr2. The only thing that sr3 has that was better than sr2 is the gameplay, the mission design is better as well but there are so few missions compared to sr2.
If you're not doing missions then you're problably bored running around steelport, the most bland and lifeless city ever seeign in a video game. There's nothing interesting going on making exploring the city feel like a chore.
Also the upgrade syatem is broken. By the time you beat the game you'll bare have any of them in a good level because it takes a huge ass time to unlock and buy them. They should uave made the story longer so we could properly use them
I encourage everybody to rewatch the ronin cutscenes from saints row 2. Not the gameplay, just the cutscenes.

It's weird, but as you were naming what was wrong with the game, I was picturing the same with GTA V. GTA has a mission that puts you in a biker bar with no weapons against enemies with cue sticks and broken bottles with no combat form of your own. GTA has many repetitious missions that become tedious after playing them a few times. Like the resupply missions and contract missions.

You can't erase the over the Top Cheese and BadAssery that is Saints 3 and 4.

Previous entries were based around gangs and criminals that EXIST (stereotypical versions but still). I am an ex criminal. Lets just say im not in deep waters anymore, but i can still swim. it really bogs down most of the actual criticisms people have about it which most reviewers actually tackle successfully. It would be the GTA shitter that would do this though so whatever
I'm in this weird spot where I'm Gen Z but I've always related to millennials more and always had more millennial sensibilities, so I'm in a weird spot where even though I AM in the target demographic, it still feels really alien and distant. It's also a game that screams "How do you do, fellow kids?".
As a person who got introduced to the game series seeing clips of the intro and actually got to playing it only at part 2, it is really sad to see what it has been reduced to.
Being heavily interested in gang culture and being a San Andreas mega fanboy, I wished I could play Saint's Row. Finally got my hands on 2 a few years later and loved it to death. Played 3. Loved it, even if I can confirm it went in a weird direction but hell I also loved 4 for what it was. I loved the B-movieness of it all and thought that it esentilaly retained that part from 2 to 4 even if the actual genre had a metamorphosis.
3 already had a massive shift in tone, but of course having never played 1, I wouldn't know how different 1 and 2 are. From what I've seen the tone shift is there too though, it's just it was less radical at the time.

Two things that will have no true competitor: GTA and UA-cam
It seems like a game that is meant to hold you’re hand through the entire game no matter what difficulty you’re on this game like a repeat of the avengers video game.
I’ve always loved and replayed SR1-4 multiple times for years so I’d consider myself a real fan. That being said after seeing all the gameplay/reviews I would NEVER actually buy this absolute failure of a game being connected to the franchise.
You’d have to pay me to actually want to play the game. This is devastating to see where the series went.
SR4 feels more Saints Row than this. And that's a game about fecking alien invasion

This was Number One in UK for box sale on release. Pre-orders of course.. A week later and sales dropped off 80% and it's down to Number Six.. LMAO
From seeing the whole story I see why the Mexican dude tried killing the boss that boss is the most incompetent I've seen and I played every Saints Row
