This is satisfying seeing you do something I couldn't. I hated the timer on this, I felt like mercenaries should have been a spinoff game where you take your time, but there was an invisible timer just for the random survivors. I would have dropped all my allowance on that.

The main reason why he uses the japanese version of the game is because the characters take considerably less damage from attacks in this version. Aka all enemies are weaker.

about 10% chance i think, it can crit for just like they said, equal to 1shot of magnum bullet or equivalent to headshot :)

It was in the original version on the PS1, so it was definitely always in the PC version. It's really difficult to pull off with perfect timing though. The player in this video is basically god tier.

I'd hazard a guess that they're "hidden" spots that reward you either with time or just by raising the chance you'll get a higher letter-ranking at the end. Some games do have hidden stats/mechanics that affect a wide variety of things.
For instance, Resident Evil 4 has its difficulty adjusted; based on your performance. It can change how often items drop from dead enemies, how many decapitations kill enemies versus how many spawn a parasite, what enemies are despawned from a room, if you get a game over too many times.
Resident Evil 5 also has partner points for your AI partner. The unmarked points determine how quickly your partner comes to your aid. You can raise these points by rescuing them faster, as well as healing them and complimenting them immediately after they help you. You can lower these points if you take forever to help them.
