I tested my roommates to see if they could taste the difference different bottles of water from free tap water to $7 bottles.

It really is the styrofoam though. We did this the same way and realized we could only taste the cups and used solo cups instead and it worked out much better.
styrofoam is an issue it ruins it, glasses are the best control medium

The scientific way to win this is to check the Ph of the water on the bottles and then try to keep it for as long as possible at the back of your tongue because it's the part which is best at detecting acidity which is measured in, well Ph. So the water samples with a higher Ph are naturally going to taste slightly more acid.
Edit: all those thing about "slightly more acidic water is better/worse for your health etc." is complete bullshit. Your body's so incredibly good at regulating acidity you don't have to worry about this kind of stuff and also imagine: "I, the human body can survive high falls, viruses and I'm so good at adapting that I can live almost anywhere but drinking slightly more acidic water is going to kill me." Of course not! In fact you can die if your body has 0.2 Ph less than necessary but you can ingest a variety of things going from highly acidic lemon to not acidic water and be just fine! what is a 0.1/0.2 difference in Ph levels in water are not going to make ANY difference. More acidic water is gonna do nothing since we can easily ingest things that are 2 times more acidic and be just fine; and less acidic water is gonna do even less harm since the fluids we use to digest nutrients have some of the lowest Ph levels known to science.

Have you had Dasani? I don't care about what brand of water I'm drinking unless it's Dasani, in which case I just refuse to drink anything if there's nothing else. I have no idea how they managed to make a flavor of water that is outdone several times over by normal tap water, but they did.
I think being in the different containers really changes the taste. The reason why some people might think that arrowhead is "Shit" is because the plastic bottle could shed some plastic into the water giving a plastic taste.
Ludwig is one of the few people in the world who host a competition with prize money and not only not pay the participants but come out with an extra $110 in the end. Truly a legendary businessman.

there is some merit to the bottle difference as plastics do at a very small rate emit particles so it may not be the water that they dislike but the gas contained in the air trappe din the bottle. you can feel the plastic difference between dasani and arrowhead. but also there is a sort of addiction with dasani as they have a small level of sodium that makes you more thirsty for it when you drink it. so theres an attachment there as well ( most of the "higher quality" waters do this)

When you buy purified water, and it says "Added Minerals for Taste" it's no longer purified. Plus most bottled water is just tap water from somewhere else

Its just that the cold water is numbing and when things are cold your ability to taste it decreases say it taste more like nothing. It is true that cold water can hold more oxygen but, I would guess that there would not be sufficient time unless your aerating your water for the oxygen in the water to increase substantially.
