"The Qur'an left the matter somewhat open" and this is why liberal Muslims not only cannot ever refute groups like ISIS - they are forced to hold the door open for them. I absolutely love your analysis. Damn, you deserve so many more views - your videos are gold. (Poor Shabbir Aly I actually feel sorry for him seeing him desperately struggling like this, because he reminds me of so many Muslims I know that are basically decent people but forced to defend the indefensible.)

I did not have time to dig into it and perhaps i should've left the last video out, but it struck me as laughable that this is a defence at all. Even IF true and observed everywhere, it is at the discretion of the owner, terms set by the owner, not often recorded in history as the conclusion of each slave's life (and clearly ineffective), and doesn't account for how most slaves never earned money.
It's all at the owner's discretion. It's no better than saying "islam allows you to free a slave if you feel like it", except the owner is milking their value first
I definitely need to make it its own topic of a video

When I read the Quran, my impression was the following: the prohibitions against alcohol and pork are quite clear and stern, with exceptions for pork only allowed when one would otherwise starve. In contrast, there is no clear prohibition against slavery. I will grant that the book does say it is better to free slaves, but this is quite different from banning it outright. It appears that to god, eating pork is a bigger evil than making, buying, selling, or owning slaves.

Asalamu'alaykum I recommend to read this article about slavery. Yes the Quran does promote to free slaves but the Hadiths also give them human rights and say if you have enough money then you should free slaves. There are many reasons why slavery was not banned outright immediately. The first was economic reasons and the second was related to human rights in the context of Pre-Islamic Arabia.

The funny thing about these Muslim apologist is that they say concubinage is better than dating. While I do not agree with premarital sex, sex while dating occurs when both parties are of mutual agreement and equality where they found each other in a safe space (i.e. school, work, or a bar. I'm Muslim and this is yet another thing that puzzles me. When Dr. Shabbir says that Slavery was the norm and that it would not be possible to make society quit slavery cold turkey, so God had to bring down the Quran to reform slavery... why doesn't God just do away with Slavery. After all, God created humans. He can alter their mind, their behavior. @onelifeuseit The fact that slavery is allowed to exist in Islam, is glaring evidence that Islam and Qur'an CANNOT possibly be from a righteous God or creator of the universe, UNLESS you accept that this righteous God, Allah who is supposed to be the source of Islam and quran, is in fact, NOT so righteous or perfect as claimed, in which case, this not so perfect Allah who allows slavery, CANNOT possibly be God, because God by definition, is SUPPOSED to be all perfect, righteous, and BEYOND human flaws and immorality such as sex slavery, wife beating, concubinage, child marriage etc, all of which are allowed by Allah and exemplified by his perfect messenger for all time, muhammad.
This is why I eventually left islam because I realised that the presence of all these seriously immoral practices within islam, is clear indication that this religion is man made and not from a perfect God.
As a result, I could not in all conscience, follow and devote my life and soul to any entity (allah) ideology (islam), book (quran) and prophet (muhammad) that allowed and enabled the ongoing human atrocities and injustices of slavery, wife beating, concubinage, and child marriage.

The Quran didn’t appear to have enough space for topics like universal love and brotherhood, but the Quran devotes more verses to ensure that Muslim men know they can have women sex slaves 4 times than telling them to pray five times a day (zero). Pri-marital sex is forbiddin in Islam. Marriage is sacred. Sex is to be lawfully enjoyed between a husband and a wife. Yet when I was 17 and I first heard of sex slavery in Islam, my mind was unhinged. I rushed home from the masjid and told my dad, "Is true one can have sex with a woman not married to?!". As a teenager then, I couldn't fully grasp the gross human rights violation; but like any boy at that age infatuated by sex, I found this contradiction a complete slap in the face--a lie. You can't have a girlfriend and should feel guilty of desires, yet you can enjoiy your personal sex slave.

In reality, they don't really care about sex outside of marriage, not for men at least, they only care about ownership and control over women. Women are simply properties of men under Islam. Otherwise consensual sex between two mature people wouldn't be haram while literally buying, selling and raping girls and women over and over again wouldn't be perfectly halal. This is why religious people are often the most hypocritical ones.

I think this was a bad idea. First, I'm a big follower of Aladdin, and I did find most of his videos good ( satirical videos included). But, I think he was being too emotional here. It seems he was just pouring his anger with islam on Dr Shabir. The problem seems to be: why is Dr Shabir is still muslim and "defending" islam after knowing all the bad things in the religion. The fact is, muslims do not believe because of the negetif aspects, rather it's because of believe in islam that they have to accept the ugly things, sometimes with polishing.
Dr Shabir wasn't defending islamic slavery. His explanation is that, due to the society in which islam emerged, slavery was to be eradicated gradually, but unfortunately, muslims failed to do so.
Of course we can disagree with him. I believe that, an Omniscient, Omnibenevolent, Omnipotent Allah can do better ( also he/it could have made people believe in Islam without recourse to jihad on infidels).
However, I think Dr Shabir is of a rare kind. He is a mainstream muslim scholar that is struggling to bring islam to the 21st century ( risking being called a heretic by other mainstream scholars).
I believe that, the options do not only have to be either "leave islam" or "become an extremist like Daniel Haqiqadtou".
Finally, just like christianity, islam will not disappear anytime soon. The best for everyone is to have an islam that respect individual rights, including the freedom to believe and not to believe.

My disagreement here is, him verbally attacking Dr Shabir just because he still remains muslim(after knowing all the bad stuff in islam). Mr Hassan Radwan has in fact made videos critiquing some of Dr shabir's statements but, without the attacks.
It's important to note that, even well educated people like Dr shabir are not immune to the cognitive bias caused by religion, especially if the indoctrination started from childhood.
Also, he wasn't defending islamic slavery. He was just stating islamic historical facts, and his opinions as to why slavery wasn't abolished by the prophet straight away.
As I mentioned in my comment, I disagree with his beliefs but, I appreciate his efforts in promoting a tolerant and modern version of islam.
And while I accept that religion is a human construct, I do recognize that most people see it as their source of meaning, without which their lives may fall apart.
PS: To my knowledge, Dr shabir is no longer proselytising and he rarely participate in debates now. He seems to be just catering to his muslim community and online muslim audiences.
And even if he is to lose his faith one day, it will require an unimaginable courage for a famous scholar like him to come out publicly.

It is really miraculous that he keeps saying that we should now fallow our straight mind, nowdays values, but still believe in Ku'ran , which states that is perfect and for all times! All the progressiveness that he calls upon is the product of secularism and advancement in human rights. It is not Islam that made this progression happened but it shamelessly borrow its values, like we should forget that in many many issues it is total opposite of those rights.

I kind of respect that he acknowledges that is problematic. It's cognitive dissonance. Growing up muslim in a western country, we generally just see the good side of the religion. Non-fundamentalist Islam, practiced in a secular western society is benign and many are great members of society. At some point, we need to be honest with ourselves and admit that Islam is not the guide for society.

when you were ranting about how more people need to speak up, I was vigorously nodding my head. It is so important. I feel like one of the reasons it took me longer to really question Islam properly was because there was such a lack of ex-Muslims speaking out. I know a lot of them fear prosecution and so there’s nothing they can really do, and that’s yet another way Islam was designed to trap people into never being able to leave, but I wish those who were out to the world as ex-Muslims would speak up a bit more. It’s so lonely questioning your religion, and sometimes I feel like I’m going insane when I look at all the Muslims around me who don’t really question Islam (and if they do, it’s only aspects of the religion which they bend over backwards trying to find explanations for that will soothe their conscience) and are only, in fact, growing stronger in faith as they grow older.
Also, those people in the comments you were describing who are like: “Mashallah, you explained this so clearly” used to drive me crazy even when I was a Muslim looking for answers and would have taken any explanation offered to me even if it was the most absurd and convoluted thing I’d ever heard. After watching one of these videos, I would go to the comments for reassurance, not really expecting there to be anyone who actually agreed and whose discomfort was quelled, but even though I was actively seeking comments like this, I was still shocked to see them. It was a weird mix of relief, sadness and deep discomfort all at once. It really fucked with my mind because it made me feel like, if these Muslims can accept it than so can I. But I really didn’t want to. Even then. So I just ignored it.

Slavery was officially abolished in mauiritatia, as the last muslim majority country, in 1981 only, but the ban was not enforced, and many people continued to be held as slaves. It was criminalised in 2007. In recent years, the islamic state practised extensively slavery, based on the islamic tradition. The tradition in islam allows slavery, as slavery was widespread amongst faiths and civilisations across asia and europe before islam. The taking of slaves and slavery made up an important part of the narrative of the prophet and his life. Slaves constituted the most valuable part of the booty. Taking slaves was an important part in the motivations of the prophet's military campaigns. In particular, female slaves taken by the muslim warriors had to submit sexually to their new masters, and sex with them is specifically permitted, as well as the beating of disobedient slaves. However, the muslim tradition also makes the freeing of slaves a virtue to be rewarded by allah, but the idea and practice of freeing of salves did not lead to a general abolitionist movement, as the prophet himself had numerous slaves and was in fact supportive of the idea of (sex) slavery holding at least four concubines.

As we have already mentioned, their opposition started at killing the ambassador of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Al-Harith ibn Umair Al-Azdi, by Sharhabeel ibn Amr Al-Ghassani. The ambassador was then carrying a message from the Prophet to the ruler of Busra. We have also stated that the Prophet consequently dispatched a brigade under the command of Zaid bin Haritha, who had a fierce fight against the Byzantines at Mu’tah. Although Muslim forces could not have revenge on those haughty overproud tyrants, the confrontation itself had a great impression on the Arabs all over Arabia. Caesar, who could neither ignore the great benefit that the battle of Mu’tah had brought to Muslims, nor could he disregard the Arab tribes’ expectations of independence and their hopes of getting free from his influence and reign, nor he could ignore their alliance to the Muslims. Realizing all that, Caesar was aware of the progressive danger threatening his borders, especially the fronts of Syria which were neighboring Arab lands. So he concluded that demolition of the Muslims’ power had grown an urgent necessity. This decision of his should, in his opinion, be achieved before the Muslims become too powerful to conquer and raise troubles and unrest in the adjacent Arab territories. To meet these exigencies, Caesar mustered a huge army of the Byzantines and pro-Roman Ghassanite tribes to launch a decisive bloody battle against the Muslims."

Hi! I'm still a muslim, but I just wanted to say I appreciate you calling out muslim apologists on sugar coating things or not giving the full truth of matters. I think it is very detrimental for people's faith and trust in religious authorities, and I wish people would be more thoughtful and conscientious when conveying religious matters to the public without falling into the trap of pleasing the masses, because it comes at a price for thsoe who are intellectual honest and curious enough to look into matters on their own, like myself.
For example, I had come across a video of a sheikh, whom I trust and was quite instrumental in getting me to start practicing my religion (I wasn't religious for the majority of my life and went through a phase where I was very devout), and he was addressing the satanic verses incident in the life of the prophet, more specifically the truth of whether it actually occurred. The video was super short and he basically said the report of the incident was mawdu' (which is to say fabricated).
But recently, I have been researching the incident and what has been said, and I read Shahab Ahmed's academic publication on a detailed explanation and list, with explanation, of all the riwayahs detailing the incident, and it's widespread use in the first couple of centuries in sirah maghazi and tafsir works, entitled Before Orthodoxy: Satanic Verses in Early Islam. This book listed all of the riwayahs and very much demonstrated to me, that it's more complicated than a short video saying "it's mawdu" basically don't give it a second thought. I also learned that scholars have taken different views on whether the incident occurred over the centuries, and I just felt decieved to be honest, it wasn't a great feeling, and it reminded me of your videos and the frustration you express. It is something I have also been noticing in the dawah scene lately as well, and although it may be suitable for the layman or those who aren't intellectually curious, it does damage to those who are, which is a group of people we should be celebrating and encouraging not pushing away.
Anyways, long message, but thank you for sharing. Although I don't agree with everything you mention, given I am still a muslim, it is refreshing to see someone highlighting these issues, and I can totally relate to the frustration.
Your videos have also made me more empathetic to the ex-muslim population, and I personally, see how someone can disbelieve in Islam, based on what they read and learn. I am currently on a journey to learn more and more and have this insatiable urge to learn, but I don't see my belief in God ever wavering, but I can't predict the future ofcourse, but I am very much more open minded and less dogmatic, and am more inclined to wholesome honest investigation and reflection wherever that leads me.
    Thanks again!

@@IshaqIbrahim3 Mohammad had no problem with alcohol while he was still trying to get Christians and Jews to accept him. Alcohol is not forbidden in Christianity neither in Judaism, so there was an impetus for him to ban it, considering he said it was going to be in paradise. Why would allah ban on earth something promised to you in paradise?
These are from Sahih, so I will try to make them succinct.
      Narrated Anas:
The people mentioned the fire and the bell (as means proposed for announcing the time of prayer) and by such a suggestion they referred to the Jews and the Christians. But Bilal was ordered, "Pronounce the words of the Adhan (i.e. call for the prayer) twice and the Iqama once only."
      Sahih al-Bukhari 3457
      Ibn Umar narrated:
"When the Muslims arrived in AI-Madinah, they used to assemble for the Salat, and guess the time for it there was no one who called for it (the prayer). One day they discussed that and some of them said that they should use a bell like the bell the Christians use. Others said they should use a trumpet like the horn the Jews use. But Umar [bin Al-Khattab] said: 'Wouldn't it better if we had a man call for the prayer?'" He said: "So Allah's Messenger said: 'O Bilal! Stand up and call for the Salat.'"
      Jami` at-Tirmidhi 190
      Narrated Ibn `Umar:
(The Verse of) prohibiting alcoholic drinks was revealed when there were in Medina five kinds of (alcoholic) drinks none of which was produced from grapes.
      Sahih al-Bukhari 4616
      Narrated Jabir:
Some people drank alcoholic beverages in the morning (of the day) of the Uhud battle and on the same day they were killed as martyrs, and that was before wine was prohibited.
      Sahih al-Bukhari 4618
      And the contradiction
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:
“Whoever drinks wine in this world, he will not drink it in the Hereafter.”
      Sunan Ibn Majah 3374
So why would Allah put a river of wine in paradise then forbid you to drink it there if you drank it here? Does that make sense. But we see that wine was not forbidden in the beginning of islam, it came after the battle of Uhud. That shows it was not an issue for him at all until Uhud.
If the muslim does not understand, Jesus said as He raised the cup of wine "This is my blood which is shed for many".
Now you can see why mohammad would prohibit the drinking of wine as it is not only part of the Passover seder of the Jews, but used by Christians as well during Communion.
If he banned the bell and the wine, then he is not permitting the use because he is anti-Christian.

Over 28 Million Africans have been enslaved in the Muslim world during the past 14 centuries While much has been written concerning the Transatlantic slave trade, surprisingly little attention has been given to the Islamic slave trade across the Sahara, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
While the European involvement in the Transatlantic slave trade to the Americas lasted for just over three centuries, the Arab involvement in the slave trade has lasted fourteen centuries, and in some parts of the Muslim world is still continuing to this day. A comparison of the Muslim slave trade to the American slave trade reveals some interesting contrasts.
While two out of every three slaves shipped across the Atlantic were men, the proportions were reversed in the Muslim slave trade. Two women for every man were enslaved by the Muslims.
While the mortality rate for slaves being transported across the Atlantic was as high as 10%, the percentage of slaves dying in transit in the Transsahara and East African slave trade was between 80 and 90%! That means more than 100 million Africans were enslaved by Islamic forces and then these 100 million African slaves died when they were forced to move from Africa to the Middle East.
While almost all the slaves shipped across the Atlantic were for agricultural work, most of the slaves destined for the Muslim Middle East were for sexual exploitation as concubines, in harems, and for military service.
While many children were born to slaves in the Americas, and millions of their descendants are citizens in Brazil and the USA to this day, very few descendants of the slaves that ended up in the Middle East survive.
While most slaves who went to the Americas could marry and have families, most of the male slaves destined for the Middle East were castrated, and most of the children born to the women were killed at birth.

From what I've read, the polytheists were often just killed. If she converted she at least got to stay alive even if enslaved. Iirc as well, the polytheist slaves were treated even worse so it was less the pagans women weren't raped, it's that they were raped and treated as even lesser than the people of the book slaves. Be raped while being told you're dirty scum sort of thing. A Jewish or Christian slave had at least some rights.

Regarding the idea that slaves cannot be freed due to an absence of jobs, maybe the solution is to free the slaves and pay them for the work they were already doing! Unless Islamic slavery practice was to acquire slaves and have them relax and do whatever they wanted, the economy of the time DID have enough jobs. The wealthy and powerful did not want to pay real value of that work.

Mr Radwan, I hope you will see this message.
As a big follower of both you and Aladdin, I am a bit surprised by your first comment.
I personally don't see a reason for Aladdin to react this way towards Dr Shabir. First, he is not trying to defend the morality of islamic slavery, he is just stating some islamic history and giving his analysis on why slavery wasn't abolished. Of course we can disagree with his use of "trajectory hermeneutics" to explain certain controversial issues in islan. Like you, I believe that an omnipotent allah could have done better.
Also, Aladdin seems disturbed/angry that Dr Shabir is still muslim and keeps preaches islam despite knowing all the ugly stuff.
But the fact is, people don't believe in islam because of the ugly stuff. That's why, so many smart people are still muslim. To paraphrase you, due to "the emotional and psychological bias", it's hard to abandon islam.
And even if Dr Shabir is to lost his faith, not everyone has the courage to be public about it like you did. And for a popular mainstream islamic scholar, a decision to retired from the public will raise many questions.
So for me, despite the disagreements on theology, scholars like Dr shabir are not the problem, it is those preventing islam and muslims from evolving who are the problem.

@@ahmad6384 Dr. Shabir is defending r@pe. Under those fancy words and convoluted phrases, he is defending r@pe. Consent does not exist in the Quran. Apostate Aladin's reactions are absolutely appropriate. As long as people defend the Quran and advocate the quran, they are complicit with rape.

@@annegreengables6367 I'm not an academic, but with my little knowledge in history and sociology, I try to look at some of these things from the perspective of the premodern person. If I lived in that period, there is a high chance I would have been either a slave or a slave owner, or at least seen it as moral. And I can imagine a future when our descendants will consider us immoral and barbaric, for eating meat despite the fact that there are many communities in asia which have been vegetarian for centuries.
Again imo, Dr shabir is in no way defending the morality of slavery/sex slavery. He seems to believe in "trajectory hermeneutics". According to him, slavery was meant to be eradicated gradually, by restricting the ways in which slaves where acquired and encouraging the freeing of slaves. And due to the social context of 7th century Arabia, an immediate ban on slavery would have made it harder for the arabs to accept islam.
Of course I disagree with Dr shabir's interpretation. I would have agreed if we were to consider Muhammad merely as a leader and reformer of his time. But a prophet/messager of an omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent Allah could have done better.
However, I do respect Dr Shabir and recognise his effort in trying to reform islam.
We need more mainstream-islam scholars like him, to help transform islam, just like what happened to christianity.
I'm not expecting religion to disappear anytime soon.

      @annegreengables6367 2 роки тому

@@ahmad6384 I have read this theory that Muhammad was playing the long game to eliminate slavery and islam. An Egyptian professor Adam and prestigious Islamic University even published a paper to this effect. He lost his job, he was declared an apostate, his marriage was dissolved, he lost all parental rights. His actions in life illustrate exactly the opposite. Muhammad recruited men to his army by promising them sex slaves. Muhammad kept and raped his four sex slaves routinely. His companions did likewise without reprimand. Muhammad even chastised Aisha for setting a slave free. FYI, Apostate Prophet compiled a brilliant video about Muhammad and slavery. His citations and research are impeccable. Muhammad's actions speak louder than words. Even so, the Quran codifies and sanctions slavery. During his lifetime, Muhammad enslaved infidels, kept slaves and sold slaves. The Ottoman Empire sold infidels as slaves in the public marketplace until 1918. Saudi Arabia (birthplace to Islam) openly and legally practiced slavery until 1967. The only thing that ends slavery in Muslim majority countries is condemnation from the West.

How is this shame on all religions? I don’t know about hinduism and Buddhism, but Jesus never had slaves or encouraged owning slaves. Paul taught that within the church the masters and slaves were brothers and encouraged some of them to free their slaves. He also taught that slave traders, cannot inherit the kingdom of God. Jesus‘s kingdom was not of the world, so he didn’t really address a lot of human institutions. But it’s clear that it was not an institution established by God.

The fact that slavery is allowed to exist in Islam, is glaring evidence that Islam and Qur'an CANNOT possibly be from a righteous God or creator of the universe, UNLESS you accept that this righteous God, Allah who is supposed to be the source of Islam and quran, is in fact, NOT so righteous or perfect as claimed, in which case, this not so perfect Allah who allows slavery, CANNOT possibly be God, because God by definition, is SUPPOSED to be all perfect, righteous, and BEYOND human flaws and immorality such as sex slavery, wife beating, concubinage, child marriage etc, all of which are allowed by Allah and exemplified by his perfect messenger for all time, muhammad.
This is why I left islam. I could not in all conscience, follow and devote my life and soul to any entity (allah) ideology (islam), book (quran) and prophet (muhammad) that allowed and enabled the ongoing human atrocity and injustice of slavery, wife beating, concubinage, and child marriage.

I think that this kind of mental gymnastics videos wasn't really for clarifying to Muslims this topics, regardless if they're in western or Muslim majority countries, that kind of channels has the only purpose to watering down Islam doctrine into clueless non-Muslims who doesn't bother to research the real context and/or meaning of those kind of Islamic principles. Let's have an scenario: when a common western person have a concern regarding slavery, and more specifically sex slavery in Islam, a Muslim shows them those Shabir Ally videos as a hand-washing maneuver to address this topic. And then, some group of western people agrees that only Muslims "can" explain Islamic doctrines and no apostate and/or non-Muslim has the right to substitute the statements of any sheik, imam or, in Ally's context, "doctor" of Islamic Studies.
Meanwhile, if I, as a western woman shows your video to another western person to show how effortlessly you disprove ALL points of Shabir Ally explanations, I'm automatically an islamophobe for trusting you, not this "scholars" or "experts" of Islam, as if being a Muslim makes you an inerrant apologist, which is clearly a preposterous claim.

And when Islam came, Islam said stop slaves, but what Islam is trying to teach, your wife has to obey everything her husband need?A wife has no right to violate the will of her husband, just like a slave cannot violate the will of his master? Plus You said the Quran says, don't hurt women, take care of them, but why don't they think about their wife's feelings when her husband has 2-3 or 4 wives Islam tries to be a hero to women, but what I see, the same evil, just done in a subtle way, no one knows the suffering of a wife Because in Islam, wives are not allowed to talk about household matters to outsiders.Suffering is obedience. This is just a law designed from their own interpretation,(Since he said, the verse in the Al-Quran itself is not clear about slavery) So all wise men, these men are trying to interpret the Quran With many advantages for the men themselves! And try to show a good image of them in the society, hijab, obeying their husbands, giving limitations to women, beating, that's all with the intention of protecting women's dignity!Although originally more on persecution!r!
