@@Liap Thank you for your quick reply. Really appreciate it. I'm new at gardening so I have much to learn. Do row covers allow enough sunlight for the lettuce to grow sufficiently during the day? Or do they block out too much sunlight and you only put the row covers on after the sunlight is done for the day?
Hello, I'd say twice a week will be the golden middle way. Lettuce plants have quite shallow root system and therefore require more frequent watering. You should always check if the soil is dry around 1inch deep and then water. The frequency of watering depends on the ambient temperature, water retention properties of the soil, size of the container and also size of the plant (the bigger the thirstier). I haven't grown Romaine Lettuce indoors yet, but I hope this helps a little bit 🙂
Yes, you can save the mulch, as long as you store it properly and it will not go bad. I usually dry it and store it in an open bag. Oxygen slows down the decomposition process Thank you very much for watching and good luck growing your own Romaine lettuce! 🥬
Doest this type of lettuce need stake support early in its growth period... My romaine heads droop over due to slender stalks in the pots...is it normal or should i do something about it...
Hello, no it doesn't need any support. When transplanting seedlings (assuming You are), put them in soil deeper, so the heart of the plant is jsut above the soil level. Also, how leggy are they?
Absolutely. Make sure the mixture results in light soil mix because seeds need oxygen to germinate. I think even just coco peat with vermicompost will work very well.
@@Liap thank you so much! As it is January and winter will be endling soon in India, I will be buying compost from market instead of making it from kitchen waste, will it be ok? I have two more questions, will really appreciate your input - - if I use a tray type container, like fish tray from fish market to grow the lettuce altogether; then what should be the distance of the seedlings when I repot them? - When you repotted the seedlings, does your soil mix only consist mixture of cocopeat and compost (just like for the seed) or soil along with it. I am confused because the note was showing as compost:peat/coir as (1:1) @1:54. If you are using soil or any other stuffs, can you please tell me the ratio?
@@akhtarraaz5500 If the compost is decent quality, it will be okay. I myself buy some compost as I am unable to make enough for all the plants I grow. - the distance between seedlings depends on how big you are going to transplant them. If you plan to transplant them very young (with only having seed leaves developed) then you can really overcrowd the space and get plenty of seedlings to transplant separately or directly to the ground. But if you want to grow them in the tray until harvest, then I'd say 20 centimeters is just about right. That's the space I left between these plants when I grew them in garden. It also depends on the variety, "little gem" is quite tiny and doesn't take much space at all. - yes, the soil mix was just compost and coconut coir/peat roughly 1:1 ratio. The weather was still pretty hot and I didn't want the soil to dry out too quickly. If the weather was cooler, I'd go with more compost than coir. I did not add any garden soil to the mixture. I like to reuse the soil mix for container gardening and when I added garden soil to it in the past, it seemed too compact to me 🙂
Hello, lettuce has shallow root system, so it's better to water it more frequently with less amounts. Depends on the growing conditions, but generaly every other or third day.
Hello, yes it can be grown in full sun, if the temperatures allow it. In cool weather they will grow best in full sun. If it's too hot, these are better grown in area with morning sun and midday shade. About 4-6 hours of sun, but they will still grow in less, but the heads won't be as tight.
Hello, this particular variety is very early and can be grown in smaller containers (7liter / 2gal). But You will have to water them more often. With larger varieties yes. If You want to grow lettuce in very small space, I suggest You grow some leaf lettuce variety instead of head one.
Hello, I live in middle Europe. I sew these at the very end of July when it's pretty hot here (23°C average day temperature) and kept them away from midday and afternoon sun. They were transplanted at the end of August and matured during September (18°C average day temperature). I also sew next round later in the garden, around 3-4 weeks later for October harvest. Hope this helps 🙂
You are not alone, I fight them every year 😀 I was advised to use coffee grounds around the plants, you should give it a try too. Though, what has worked the best for me is going out at night, when slugs are most active and pick them. Hope this helps 👍 Good luck!
@@itsme_lakay You do it once and most slugs will be gone for quite some time. They like to hide nearby where they feed, so it will last weeks even months for new ones to come. Don't worry, they won't bite you 😉
