TODAY... I went to (try) to buy some Romaine Lettuce... at Albertson's Store... usually they have a big beautiful bunch ... TODAY... it was Very Little for $2.00 each... I thought oh heck "NO"... This year I'm growing my own...
Steel containers are readily available at stores like Home Depot. You just have to drill holes in the bottom for drainage. Behrens is the brand I like: www.amazon.com/dp/B000AS3OVY?linkCode=ssc&tag=onamznicolebu-20&creativeASIN=B000AS3OVY&asc_item-id=amzn1.ideas.230I7160RRHXM&ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ons_mixed_d_asin&th=1
I wanted to grow these in my unheated garage under grow lights until spring. What is the lowest temperature these will actually grow in ? (not exactly sure yet what the temp is in my garage, I just bought some remote/wireless thermometers.
When you cut leaves or the whole head how do you keep it from wilting so fast. Is my plant just not healthy and hearty enough to stay refrigerated for a day or so. I've tried washing and keeping in paper towels or cutting not washing but still storing in paper towels wilted either way. I found also sometimes cutting and getting to the table that day still wilted. I love salad and want to grow my own.
My romaine saplings are growing with the leaves sitting on top of a 4” - 6” stem. Do I need to replant so the stem is buried, or let them continue with the leaves on that tall stem?
Hi Nicole, great video. Thanks alot. Here in Jamaica our temperatures are 75 and up... summers are high 80s/low 90s... would these lettuce thrive if I kept them in a shaded area rather than in bright or direct sunlight/heat? Thank you.
direct sunlight is best but just make sure your watering them so they don’t dry out also don’t water them in the morning bc that makes them burn up during the hot day. water at night! hope this helped
Based on research I've done, you'll want to keep them shaded some and also give them sun. Like she said in the beginning, too much direct heat or hot temps and its likely to bolt or reflower seeds and the lettuce won't taste its best like that.
I have romaine growing indoor in a hydroponic set up. They are growing very tall and are floppy. Can I replant them in a container like yours, and they will continue to grow?
Thank you for your response, if compose not available is Neptune’s fish and seaweed a good fertilizer ? We will be purchasing your books, IDK if this type of info is available in any of them
so you saying once i start cutting it if I cut around it leaves will grow again from the same plant I cut??? I do not need to throw away from the one I cut and replant another. ??
I have been trying to grow my own romaine lettuce, and while it is growing beautifully, it is so bitter it's inedible... do you have any advice on how to fix that?
Hmm, bitterness is usually from the plant trying to go to seed. Once the leaves are bitter, they're probably past their prime. In the future, try growing it when it's cooler outside. Most places are probably too warm now for lettuce
On-line there are comments that you can regrow the bottom portion of Romaine. after harvesting the entire leaf portion of plant. I have never been successful. What do you say> Thank you!
Some of my favorite seed companies are Baker Creek, Botanical Interests, Johnny's, Southern Exposure, and High Mowing. Here's a link to one source: www.botanicalinterests.com/product/Parris-Island-Cos-Romaine-Lettuce-Seeds
I have guinea pigs. Romain is their favorite. They can really put it away. Maybe I can save a few bucks by growing the lettuce
Exactly why I'm here too!
That’s why I got interested. My son’s parakeets love romaine (so do we)!
more than a few

This video was awesome way better than the first one I found from 9 years ago haha
Super informational! Thanks! I've started growing lettuce this year, and yes, it's so easy. I needed to know when to harvest it. Thank you!
I love eating romaine lettuce. Great
I was wondering about the cut-and-come-again method of harvesting. Thanks for the video!
I bought a few lil ones for cheap like four weeks ago and omg they are huge now! I’m gonna harvest them now!!! Thank you!
That's great!, I'm going to start but wanted to know if you need to replant a new seedling after you cut out the romaine head?
Very informative, thank you so much! Answered so many questions I had
Such incredible information. I love the loose leaf method and have found it gives so much more. FANTASTIC!!! Thank you.
AWESOME information
TY for shearing. I was wondering if I can just pluck off a few leaves for a salad.

Can you do this indoors? Needing a substantial supply for my finches. Help??
Yes, it grows well indoors. Look at hydroponic growing.

Thank you. I need to cut mine in the morning. I sure have NOT been cutting anything because I didn't know when. You're awesome.
🤣spoke my mind!
I Love this! Thank You!
Love the plant tub. If I were searching, what exactly would I call this? & which material would be best for not getting tarnished?

What do you do with the ones that are starting to bolt like that? Can you cut down that stalk and it would regrow?
Only one way to find out I guess haha
Once they start bolting they will taste bitter so the plant is a loss.
Wow, that is amazing so if I cut it off at the stem. It will regrow every year or once.
It will regrow.
And how far apart should the seeds be planted?
Thank you🙂
wow 🤩 where do you get your seeds
Can I grow Romain in my house in winter seasons alberta. Thank you

Mine seem more leggy. Like vining more on the ground. Is that bolting?
How often do you water it?

Where do you live where any vegetables are sitting on the grocery store shelf for 2 weeks?
why is it every time I wrote at my Romaine lettuce, and then I put it in soil, the middle part of the lettuce starts to become mushy and moldy?
What is the best organic pesticide prevention for romaine ?
Interplant with lots of other plants like chives, calendula, onions, etc.
I tried to grow it this year but it looked nothing like this. I now know why. Better luck next year
What type of fertilizer do you recommend?
Compost is always great
Thank you for your response, if compose not available is Neptune’s fish and seaweed a good fertilizer ? We will be purchasing your books, IDK if this type of info is available in any of them
awesome !!!! Thank you :) you look awesome !!!! Thin healthy super tanned !!! Good job :)
The way you touch the lettuce say so much! You even break it.
so you saying once i start cutting it if I cut around it leaves will grow again from the same plant I cut??? I do not need to throw away from the one I cut and replant another. ??
Yes, just cut the lower leaves and leaves the main stalk growing. I have been harvesting off the same romaine plants for over ,3 months.
You're so cute! Thank you for helpful!

I do it. But some yellow flowers appeared. Is it right?
That means the romaine is going to seed b/c it's probably too warm
@@Gardenary is it waste ? Now what can I do?
How to grow garlic
Mine keeps getting stunted. I start them inside then put them out side after 2 weeks or 1-2 in’s tall and they die the next day

I actually have a video on it!
ua-cam.com/video/T9kOFsPdXoA/v-deo.html
Only harvest the lowest outer leaves. Do not cut the stalk. I have been harvesting from the same plant for 3 months.
Why does it never grow back the same? I can grow it easily, but the leaves are bitter.
That can happen. Bitterness usually means the plant is stressed and going to seed.
Harvest when the leaves are smaller.
What's name of that long silver tub behind you?
Its a feeder tub. For horses. You can find them at Tractor Supply.
Where can i buy romain seeds
Some of my favorite seed companies are Baker Creek, Botanical Interests, Johnny's, Southern Exposure, and High Mowing. Here's a link to one source: www.botanicalinterests.com/product/Parris-Island-Cos-Romaine-Lettuce-Seeds
Why does my romain grow so tall ?
Fo sho.
Plant from seeds or from grafts? Unbelievable you talk about growing a plant without the method of propagation
Having you & romaine lettuce in shade against all that sunshine background makes you very hard to see, video very dark. Otherwise, great video.
Not a how to video at all
Get a good workout in girl!
Can you harvest and eat from a plant that’s bolted?
You can try at the beginning. The flavor of the leaves will change. Romaine becomes bitter, so you may no longer want to eat it.
Thank you!
