I would take that old starter and see if you have any local starter alternator rebuild shops that could rebuild it. Might be a good item since it was so hard to find to have for later or resell
I flip boats, motors, cars and motorcycles. The number one rule is don't spend any money on the refurb unless you absolutely have to. My opinion is that few people would expect electric start on a cheap old motor like this one. I would have not replaced the starter, saving the $150 on the replacement and the $10 or so on the switch. This would have increased your profit by $160 to $525; an increase of nearly 50%.
While I don’t always do great, it keeps my mind and hands occupied. Love my two strokes and will always stay busy with them. Glad to see I’m not alone in my addiction
You find insane deals, I scour for 9.9 4 strokes short shafts with electric start for hours, can never find anything under $600. Anyway, awesome content keep em comin!
I bet you could have rebuilt the old starter for $25 or so. It's really easy if you can find the parts. Maybe hang onto the old one and rebuild in case you need one in the future.
Cool engine. I just buy last week a 15h a Mercury 2 stroke from 1997 for 250€ with the original spark plugs putted in! To much dust on the outside, but the inside was very clean and greased. Take it home and everything it's working has it should. The rubbers are like new and after cleaning the outside dust looks like a motor with months! The guy that sold it have it announced for months for 700€ but he doesn't know how to put "fueraborda" in Spanish and put "fora vorda" and never show listed on any search. I offer him 250€ and the guy accepted. 😀 Now I have a new outboard for a long long time.
Great video! BTW the motor is actually made by Yamaha but just rebranded. Later in the 80s there were also alot of rebranded Mercurys sold as Mariners but this and a few others from Yamaha as well.
Hell, I got a solid Johnson 40 for $50. Pull start + electric start, control box and steering hookups included. Some suburbanites bought an older aluminum fishing boat and already bought brand new Yamahas so they priced it to sell
Since its for business ship older starter for rebuild. It’ll be as good as new then sell it for 100-120. And that’s essentially an old yamaha not merc in anyway. Mariner is a fork of yamaha hence why they’re good old engine

I would have changed the impeller too, might be working right now but is brittle and has a bent memory and will fail on the new owner soon and he will either seize it up or bust the bolts trying to replace it and end up coming back and being a pain. I get my motors for free because they are clogged with salt but have found a way to clean them out without taking them apart.
@@BoatBusters I remove the thermostat and check to see if it is pumping water, generally is. Use vinegar and dawn and run it for a few minutes, let sit for a day, run it again and try blowing air into the pee hole, let it sit again, keep starting it and blowing air until you can hear bubbling inside. You will start to get the vinegar to run out but the flacking off of the salt will clog the hole. Use wire to open it up and keep running it until warm for probably two weeks. The soaking and warming up will slowly clean it out. The secret is patience. After you take out the motor and dump the barrel you will be surprised at all the salt at the bottom.
