      Since I am watching this 3 or 4 years later.
      I’ve so called advantage of hindsight.
      Mark Gray is a great player and sounds like a good guy. His commentary is without fault.
      But, (!) any one who has heard Earl S. by now, is probably thinking like I am.
      Wouldn’t this have been a good match for an Earl commentary.
      I am going to go so far as to suggest if Earl did go back and take this match on, even
      Mark would watch and
      Listen, and say
      “Yes,that’s how it is done “
      So ,(imo) Billiard Network , No one else
      can really “cut the mustard “ .
      I don’t know where you could find them,
      but you need a lot of
      Earls to keep me watching.
      There is Scott Frost,
      and there’s Jeremy Jones. But JJ has changed some,I guess to concede to the establishment.
      And I already see Scott modifying his style also. Come on Scott, stick with what got you here. I never figured you to cave.
      JJ, well I guess I’m not
      surprised.
      So we’ve got Earl and
      Scott as the best of the best.
      How do you copy that?
      adios

      I hope your weekend was just as great, thanks for asking! If that draw shot amazes you, I'd suggest searching for incredible shots on UA-cam.

    After watching the first game in which the commentator said it was the third game of the match, the commentating IS good as Elex Washington says below except more could be said on how and why shots were made and the speed, english, shape and angles used to make the shots AFTER the player shoots them. This helps those trying to play better pool. What most commentators do is predict the shots BEFORE players shoot and they do this as most of their commentary. A little prediction is ok, but when it's about all you hear it becomes like a game to see how well predictions were made taking away the attention from the game itself.

    I wish this guy would stop saying that Jayson is the best, or 1 of the best, in the world. I highly disagree. He's a great player but there are guys out there that will outmatch him the majority of the time.
    I will say that he hasn't been as much of a baby, like he used to be, when things don't go his way. He and Earl playing straight pool is a prime example. It didn't take a genius to know what Earl was playing, especially if you play a lot of 14.1. Jayson just slams and rolls balls all over the table. Classy.
    I've just never been a Jayson Shaw fan. He's his own biggest fan. I hate to say it about most players, actually it's just him. But I like to see him lose. Especially if he cries about something. He seems to be maturing and growing up a bit though. Maybe he'll stop being such a douche. We can hope!

    • @billiardnetwork
      @billiardnetwork  3 роки тому

      Strong opinion. In the end, Chuck, I guess you have to judge players by their results.

    • @chuckg4229
      @chuckg4229 3 роки тому

      @@billiardnetwork yes it's a strong opinion and I do think Jayson has matured since the few times I've seen him "lose it" on video, or in person.
      I don't really judge anyone. I only give my opinion about certain people or players when so much is said, over and over, that I disagree with. It's not judgmental, it's only my opinion.
      With this opinion also seems to explain why men's pocket billiards has been seen in a negative light for so long. When I say "men's" I say that because the women's "tour" lasted longer and was more successful while it was an actual tour. The men self destructed.
      I believe the men, and women as well, could have a very successful tour again if promoted and shown in a positive light and had more supporters. Too many people think of pool as a "seedy" kind of game. And when players act like Jayson has, on a big stage, it only supports that opinion. And the same goes for Earl but he has more love and appreciation for the game than anyone ever has.
      Tempers will always flare, players will always say things and act unprofessional, but there are still a lot of ways to make pool a more positive and professional game that would have a better impact on potential supporters and/or sponsors. Just my opinion. And I still say that Jayson is not the best, or in the top few, players in the world as the commentators kept saying. The Chinese players have a great chance to take over with the way they train and the "pool school" they attend. It's amazing to see how serious they take it.
      There are only a few American players that have that much love and dedication to the game and take it that serious and have that much respect for it. It's a wonderful game and I believe it could be very popular among non players one day. There are a lot of games and/or sports with a lot of fans who don't play that particular game or sport.
      Other than that, I still stick to what I said in the earlier post. I wasn't going to reply at all but I am one of those people who have deep respect, and a certain love, for the game of pocket billiards. And I do believe that it could be mainstream again with some work and dedication from the right people and organizations. Thanks for the reply, I'll probably bow out for now. I believe I've made my point and addressed your reply. Have a great day and hit em straight!!!

    Non-compliant or illegal breaks came from the soft breaking of Skyler Woodward. Small minds made a very poor effort to stop soft breaking with this 3 balls going past the head string rule. The problem with this rule is many times hard breaking doesn't cause 3 balls to go past the head string and the player loses the table by no fault of his or her own. With small minds it becomes a real dilemma because the way to do it without this unfairness is right in front of them, but they can't see it. It's done already with the speed gun which proves a soft break directly. However, I don't know if they could figure out how to use a speed gun.

    Sorry to say but Mark Gray is not good at commentating this match. He could learn a lot from Earl.
    Why is he not good:
    1. He mostly tells what viewers already see. It is like showing a picture of a tree and then tell, you now see a tree.
    2. Commentating should add additional information.Telling the score all the time which all can see is not. Telling a ball is missed is something viewers can see. Earl tells about all different ways to play a ball, BEFORE the shot is done. Or explain why a player does certain things.
    3. Do talk about the on hindsight obvious things all the time.
    Seems to me the commentator has not prepared him self. A good commentator would give lots of additional information e.g. about the players, the playing location, the event, the other players they have beaten already etc etc etc.
    This is just meant as some positive feedback to give some thoughts on how to improve.

      I mean Earl's commentary is really great and verbose. But I don't agree that a commentator is bad if they don't tell you exactly what spin a player is using on every shot. That would make it more like a teaching video than a commentary which is good too but not necessary. This guy Mark tells you what's going on in key safety situations, for me that's good enough. I guess it would be good if he verbally acknowledged when a shot is really difficult and what the player needs to do in those situations and also tell you when the player has made a big positional mistake.
      A big part of commentary is just to keep you focused and have someone to share the experience with. I think the biggest sign of a quality commentator is whether they make you feel excited or inspired by the game and create a good atmosphere. Like in snooker when John Virgo exclaims "Where's the cue ball going?!!". It's electric! The signs of a really bad commenator is if they a) seem bored by the game or tired b) lose focus all the time and start rambling about the weather etc and miss key moments completely. The Supreme Pool series commentator does both of those and is a pretty terrible commentator.

    • @chuckg4229
      @chuckg4229 3 роки тому

      Earl tells you what you're going to see for the next 2 or 3 shots at times. He has to have one of the highest pool I.Q.'s out there. He usually calls em spot on.
      And he's still a dangerous player when he's not in his own head too much. I really believe that if he just went back to basics, without all of the tape, gloves and all of the stuff he wears sometimes, that he would be back to being a lot closer to the player he used to be. Definitely one of my favorites.
      And it bugs me when they say Jayson is the best, or one of the best, players in the game. I just don't see it. Although he's an excellent player, there are a ton of matches out there where I'd bet against him. I'm just glad he's started to mature. He was a huge baby and a whiner for a long time. Not to be confused with Earl's passion l, respect and dedication to the game.
      Some people say Earl whines. But it's just his passion for the game. There isn't a player, alive or dead, that has the passion and love for the game that he has.
