When flipping laptops, I tend to clean out the fans/vents and repaste the cpu if possible. It may cost a bit more time and effort but it ensures that the buyer gets good performance out of the laptop, especially if the laptop has been used for 2 years or more.

Agreed, and I'm not sure where you are from, but here in the US, even Walmart is now selling electronics tool kits with most everything you need in a tiny package for $10 USD under the Hyper Tough brand, and I got one as a Christmas gift in my stocking from my girlfriend as I was going to buy an iFixit kit, and no need now because this kit does it at 1/4 the cost.

@@CommodoreFan64 You get what you pay for. I'm sure you get most of the tools an iFixit kit has, but they'd be far worse in quality, and when working with sensitive electronics I wouldn't want to risk using cheap tools. The iFixit kit would pay itself off in no time.

In the past I sold a few laptops in Germany. What I learned: Also clean them from the inside! In the ad I listed the fact, that there is new coolingpaste and no dust at all. Customers like it clean and also if you sound professional. Telling them, that you also did a cleaning from the inside, could lead to more certainty for your customers. At least that's my experience in Germany.
Loved that video. Good luck selling. Kind regards from Germany.

Finally, a Tech YES City budget laptop flipping video. I've been flipping laptops in Zimbabwe for about 2 years now (Desktop flipping market is horrible due to the 18 hour daily power-cuts, poor tech knowledge of most buyers and outrageous hardware pricing+duty for a generally bad economy) and these Haswell Latitudes are super popular for their battery life, portability and durability, much like ThinkPads. I generally found that SSDs are a massive selling point (if the buyer knows what an SSD is), as are i7, great battery life, aesthetics and the budget price. Great video, as always. For 70 AUD, that was a cracking deal, especially for our market. Good on ya, mate!

It must be possible Brian, although it is a bit different to flipping PC's. I did it for a few years before starting with PC's. There is a bigger market for budget laptops than for PC's because every family owns a laptop. I buy used laptops from companies (e.g. a bulk of HP Elitebook 1040 with i5 and 180GB M.2 SSDs), do all basic checks, open them and clean them with compressed air and restore an image which has all drivers pre-installed.
The profit margin is big (100%+) and the amount of work doable because most of these business laptops have just a few screws to remove the botton.
Most laptops I sell are much newer than the one shown in the video, however I still get a few from private customers. In that case I replace the thermal paste as well and check also the CMOS battery which is often below 2,7V in these old laptops.
I like the idea that you present "Used IT", most of these old laptops are still fast and require only minor repairs and/or a HDD -> SSD swap.

I have been flipping older laptops to cater towards retro gaming and collections for a while now, so here are my tips over yours:
    1. clean the insides and advertise that the insides are well loved and it runs nice and quiet.
    2. when you buy laptops over 5 years old, I strongly recommend you stay away from the lower end models (anything under $1200) as they might just break down in your hands (I personally would only get business class, workstation and gaming laptops because of their ease of servisability, even tho I doubt one can get much profits off the later two)

Laptops can be ok for flipping depending on the situation. I take anything I can get my hands on even Dead Laptops because I part them out. After doing that for a while I have enough spare RAM to usually upgrade a Laptop to Max RAM & than I toss an SSD in it with a fresh install of Windows. I also take the Laptops apart totally clean them inside & out, Lube the Fans, change the Thermal Paste & Pads & slap it back together. Although taking Laptops apart is tedious lol, I like the person getting it to know it will last for Years to come.

I used to do this when I had a cheap supply and even paid off a car because of it but these days mainly just for fun and collecting. Do it long enough and one will realize just how better made some of the older laptops are where they are serviceable and if something died it didn't mean needing to rework or replacing the board ect. These days all what most laptops are just dinky ultra thing toys with rare and costly exceptions, the good ones turn up to the thick heavy tanks that can take a beating for years without breaking down. For those on a budget wanting a cheap laptop that can do esports titles without being crap then look at Dell Precisions from the second to fourth gen plus they are much more serviceable on a budget than anything after.

I just bought one of these - they are amazing value. The built quality is a big strong point - you should stress that in the sales ad. As a former Dell Technical Support Professionel I know that regarding laptops built quality is just as important as specs. I bought mine from www.refurb.eu - their business model is based on a grading system ranging from A-C, maybe you could look into that if you are deciding to go into the laptop market.
Great video as always - thanks!
(Ps. many Dell E7240´s have a minor fan noise issue, mine had this aswell. Disabling turbo boost in the BIOS and installing the newest wireless driver sorted the issue for me - but look it up, there are varying solutions on the interwebs.)

I used to fix laptop's about 7years ago. Its definitely more of a challenge when it comes to replacing motherboards and other hardware hidden inside. I also used to get alot of MacBook AIR's in the shop. I sent everyone back out with a dual boot Windows setup. Not one has ever came back. And making $300 for each was certainly paying the bills.
On the question of the day. I'd recommend getting the 4th Gen. i5. Run it for about a month and if it doesn't put out the performance your looking for, just upgrade it to 4th Gen. i7. I did that with a i7 i5 3570 and made the jump a month later to the 3770K and Z77 Extreme4. That with an RX480 8GB is a great 1080p high-ultra settings gaming rig. It also has PCIe 3.0 as well as USB 3.0 on board. A Bluetooth chip and WiFi card brought that PC backcto life for a good allrounder. Its still running strong today. My pops is never far away from the PC i gave him. He totally loves it.

    Hey Bryan,
I would be wary on this particular model. If you can get working versions of them they are ok. But if you need to add parts like SSD or Ram then those parts are a little more expensive.
The SSD is not your standard m2 connection and the Ram uses a low power variant 1.35.
Earlier and later Latitudes have more standard parts.

its funny that i snagged a toshiba portege a30-a for $30 usd last sunday from the flea market. what heppened is that i just asked a guy that sells laptops if he has any laptops with problems for sale, so he pulls out the toshiba and begins to tell me that its not accepting any ram that he puts in it, except 1 2gb stick, so i take it apart at home and realize that he was trying to make an ecc ram work in a non ecc motherboard. so yeah i have spare parts and add 4gb of non ecc ram and it works perfectly!

I sell computers for a living but laptops have always been difficult for me. I just don't know enough about them to know what a reasonable price for them would be, and a lot of them have completely dead batteries or no chargers. I just don't feel comfortable selling someone something that could realistically break at any second and I'd have no idea how to fix it. At least with the PCs I sell I can help people out if they have issues with them.

I got a "broken" Dell E6540 workstation for free some time ago, without a charger. I took it for parts, as it had an i7 Haswell quad-core in it. Turned out the only thing broken in it was the memory and the missing boot drive. Put in an SSD I got in a lot for €15, bought a second had charger for it for €30 and put in 8GB RAM I could get for €15. Made a nice quick €200 profit on it ^^. It's a shame though notebooks like don't go for much here. Wonder how much you can get for that E7420 you got, I'd say no more than about 300 AUD but I don't know how the Aussie market is also

From my own experience some customers compare used gaming laptops with consoles. They want a "gaming laptop" but they don't really know why they want a laptop to do that gaming. Consoles win the price/performance game there due to the knowledge discrepancy. I was selling a Lenovo 6th gen i7 laptop with a 960M and had a really hard time getting more than 350$ (roughly translated) since most people who were interested just wanted to know if they could game on their couch with it.

@@MrBearyMcBearface well I'm talking about gaming laptops in particular.
The ryzen 7 3rd gen in laptop is not much faster than the ryzen 5 3rd gen. Both are quad core, and not much cheaper than the Intel equivalent. While on the other side, the i7 8th gen or 9th gen (basically the same) have 2 extra cores (6 cores instead of 4 on both the ryzen 5 and 7) and is much more powerful than the i5 in laptops.
That is why I say ryzen is not good in laptops, at least at the moment. Even the lowered powered ryzen 4th gen laptop chips (the ones with "U" in the name) have more cores making them definitely a viable choice for powerful laptops, and great for the latest games.
My i7 8750h laptop is great at gaming, with the only downside being it's too powerful for almost any laptop to handle, you will most likely encounter power or thermal throttling when the CPU is stressed. My laptop has both and my laptop is considered to be one that runs cool. Because Ryzen is now 7nm this could change the game in 4th gen Ryzen. But we need to wait and see.

In my experience selling things like laptops, the market you're shooting for is students. And that can be older students who need the laptop personally, and even young families who have young kids that need to do homework and don't want to go to the library to type and print. I've even sold laptops to young moms whose kids are now in elementary school and they are also going back to finish their college degree. So many people these days don't have actual computers and just phones and tablets, so they need something to get real work done with.
And I've been using an i5 4460 the last few years and recently put in an RX 580 and the i5 is the bottleneck for sure. Before my gtx 780 often was, but the RX 580 can use more CPU to really fly. And when looking for upgrades I've learned 4th gen i7 are way overpriced. My long-term plan to upgrade has been to buy a second 4th gen cheap office system with an i7, swap the CPU and flip it. But even that has proved difficult.
