Interesting! Having been born in the Dutch part of the Low Saxon area and spent my childhood there, I didn't know this song. I have an interest in Old Saxon myself and was wondering if there would be any reason why 'hwat thu hetan bist' would not be used here? The construction 'hetan wisan' for 'to be called' appears in the Heliand and I think I have also seen it in Middle Dutch ('(ge)heten zijn'). I can't really place 'hēttis', with double t. That one reminds me of 'hettian' (with short e though), but that obviously wouldn't apply here (hatjan, pursue).

In Middle Saxon, Ik hette is attested so that is where *hēttis is from. Old Saxon has plenty of archaicisms that go back to the time of Gothic.

@learningoldgermaniclanguages As a present tense, really? It looks similar to Dutch 'heette', which I have always assumed to be a later development, turning the reduplicating 'hiet' of the past tense into a weak form with the - de / - te ending added to the present stem 'heet', giving 'hetede', then syncopated to 'heette'.

I looked it up and it seems to be in the past tense, if I am understanding these German sources correctly, but given the archaicisms that Old Saxon has, it would not be a stretch to have a reconstructed passive present as you have in Old English, Old Norse and Gothic. If I am writing in Old Saxon, it would be a very early form of it.
Since you're talking about Dutch, it would make more sense to look at Old Dutch rather than Old Saxon for one-to-one comparisons and Old Saxon for the Saxon dialects in the Netherlands today.

@@learningoldgermaniclanguages Probably, but Dutch happens to be an easy source for quick reference for me. And in my experience, although Dutch doesn't directly descend from Old Saxon, it does have a large overlap with Low Saxon and is both lexically and morphologically sufficiently close to Old Saxon to be a valuable help in predicting Old Saxon forms from time to time.
As to early Old Saxon, I saw that other video and wondered if it would have had an older 'blot' rather than the Latin / Christian loanword 'offar'', maybe.
The thing is, there is not a single human being in the entire world who speaks Old Saxon as their native language nowadays, and it is very easy to have mistakes slip in when trying to use it actively, simply because it is a pioneer's work by people exploring linguistic terrain that is to a large degree uncharted. There is no familiarity, as we have all had very little exposure to this dead or dormant language. A lot of what you try to do has to be puzzled together. I see some words in these verses that make me wonder if I got something wrong, or maybe not, and I ask about it, trying to assess the degree of my own knowledge or lack thereof, and learn. But I want to emphasize that any serious effort by anyone of us to write, speak or sing in Old Saxon is praiseworthy in itself, and inspiring, and the net positive effect is far greater than the occasional error that may be made during the process. Keep up the good work. 👍

I know the modern Lower German version, it is about 90% similar to this version here, related to the words.
Ich kenne die moderne plattdeutsche Version, sie ist zu ungefähr 90% ähnlich zu dieser Version hier, bezogen auf die Wörter.
