Jen - You need nipple shields/covers, cotton ones like cotton pads, to soak up the milk that will come out at any time. It is to protect your clothes and yourself from embarrassment. You will need sanitary pads (heavy flow or overnight type) when you are home. The hospital will have them for you when you are there after delivery. That's all I can think of right now. Can't wait for the baby to arrive!

Don't forget nipple cream either. My flat mate said using adult diapers was really helpful for her after pregnancy. Not just for the after birth but for any leaks as well. Also some aloe vera for when it starts to burn after birth, there's an Australian brand that's really good, but basically you want to find something that's safe for your vagina. You can put a small amount in the adult diaper before you it on just to help cool the area

use baby nappies during the night to soak the milk too don't slip around as much. so much easier and I still do this with my 1yo haha

My mom used heavy menstrual pads, cut them in half and stuck them in her bra. Much cheaper and more absorbent than the nipple cover/ bra-liner things

Hi jenn! Nurse here. Always remember your in control of your birthing experience. If you don't like your nurse and she is not advocating for you enough, remember you can always "fire" her from your care. I'm sure it feels awkward as a patient, but the right people will understand. I hope you have such a special experience giving birth

Yes! And you can say no repeatedly like... I didn't want to be hooked up to a catheter (restricting movement) and my husband/mom knew this. We fought tooth and nail to prevent me from being hooked up and while that was a personal choice it's things like that you should discuss and have clear before going into labor so you have a team (your partner) advocating for you because they know exactly what you want down to exact procedures. There should be leeway for whatever happens + discussion around safety of course, but always have your wishes clear because in the heat of the moment you're going to be too tired / zoned out to fight with a nurse and your partner will have to make decisions for you that jive with what you want or could decide yourself.

Pads!!!! You’re missing postpartum pads from your hospital bag, Jenn! You’re going to have the heaviest period of your life after birth and no normal period pad will keep that blood from getting all over everything. I’ve heard adult diapers are a great, more comfortable alternative should you want something more full coverage. Whatever is most comfortable for you is what you should get! Also don’t forget clothes and diapers for your baby boy! And formula if there’s breastfeeding complications or you don’t wish to breastfeed

Hospital underpants and pads are the best. Steal ALL of them! Take the peri bottle, the heat packs, the cold packs home - you will need them all! I brought a pacifier too because many baby friendly hospitals do not provide them.

Hi! L&D/postpartum nurse here. We recommend avoiding the use of lotions or oils on newborn baby. These products actually inhibit the natural production of our skin oils, similar to how we feel the need to reapply lip balm over and over again- lip balms took the place for our body to naturally moisturize itself. Good thought, though! I hope this was helpful and makes sense.

my advice: don’t pack for the spa, pack for one of those mud runs, haha! you’re going to be doing really hard work! and then try to leave the hospital as soon as you’re able to. during the pandemic we’ve been allowing new moms to leave the next day provided that the baby is cleared by pediatrics.
    finally: pushing is pooping.

Hi Jenn! Postpartum nurse here! I don’t personally have kids, but these are things I hear my patients say they wished they had brought or are so thankful they did: more baby clothes than you think you need (babies can spit up often), at least a couple changes of clothes for you and Ben just in case your labor is long or you have to stay longer after delivery (minimum is 24 hours typically), any type of pad underwear (I think the brand Always has a few styles), sleep sacks (so much easier than trying to swaddle with a blanket), breastfeeding pillow, your and Ben’s pillows (the hospital’s pillows aren’t the comfiest), your and Ben’s favorite snacks, general entertainment for Ben (you seem to got some things for you already!), and a car seat for the baby (definitely make sure the base is already secured into the car when you go to the hospital). You can bring diapers and wipes for the baby if you have a specific kind you want to use, but the hospital will have plenty where that came from. You’ll get lots of freebies to go home with! I’m so excited for you guys!!

Jenn's journey with her pregnancy and postpartum is amazing. If I wanted to have kids, she'd be the perfect example. Throughout this whole experience, she's kept her individuality. She knows it's a role she's playing to help another human but she's not defining herself as that role

It's almost like she treats her kid like a dog ( I'm a loving dog parent/overall dog lover and I would never use the word dog as an insult to someone). I mean this in the sense that when you have a dog, it's your responsibility to take care of them/ give them the best lifestyle you can. Loving them comes with the relationship. But that doesn't mean that all you are is a dog parent.

Face cleansing wipes (bending over sink and shower might be hard at first!), Hakka manual breast pump (I WISH I had it to help express the first few days, I bought it a month after giving birth), frida spray bottle for down there, earth mama perineal spray for down there. I thought bamboobies pads were worth it because if you have any trouble nursing like I did, your chest can get so sore and their pads are so soft and gentle. I’m so excited for you..My beautiful half Caucasian half Korean son is almost three now, it has been fun to enjoy your pregnancy and relive a bit of my own too! You are going to have such a wonderful birth! I work on L&D and postpartum- our first-time mamas that birth vaginally stay about 48-hrs postpartum, c-sections are around 72-hrs. My biggest tip is to keep an open mind, expect the unexpected, and do what you want and need to be comfortable. Also, brings lots of yummy snacks, you will need it to keep your energy going. You will do amazing! CONGRATULATIONS, Jenn and Ben! 😘🥳

Oh, almost forgot: for baby, 1-2 outfits is all he’ll need. Maybe a pair of infant mittens, too. Those nails, though tiny, are really sharp. And most importantly, ensure car seat and carrier are all ready to go.
Ben (Dad), it is totes okay if you have to look away at some points. A lot of our dads have to sit down and pretend the epidural is not happening. Enjoy those skin-to-skin moments, you two! They are the absolute the best! 💜💜💜

Personally, I brought my own pajamas but never used them.
    What we did use:
    - slippers
    - shampoo/conditioner/body wash
    - towel
    - toothbrush/toothpaste (hospital toiletries kinda suck)
    - nursing bra! The clip down makes everything easier
    - hair ties/clip
    - skincare routine
    - going home outfit
    - snacks for husband (granola bars, sandwich crackers)
    - baby blanket/hat (for pictures)
    - baby going home outfit
Everything else we used from the hospital.
When you go home though, you’ll need pads/diapers (I used diapers), honestly…just get the frida mom kit or whatever is equivalent. I needed all of it (peri bottle, ice pads, perineal foam, lidocaine) Especially the peri bottle!

I had my son last year June (he's 1 yr old now) For the baby you should get a swaddle blanket or some type of blanket to take them home in even if it's summer also a baby outfit with hat. diapers and stuff like that you don't necessarily need because the hospital will provide that but also for yourself or your postpartum care I would recommend getting tucks hemorrhoid pads they're very helpful for healing afterwards and they don't normally provide that at the hospital as well as a upside down peri bottle to Cleanse yourself when you use the restroom because you can't wipe for about six weeks because of having natural childbirth but the peri bottle they normally give you is harder to use than an upside down peri bottle

As a mom of 2, some essentials either for hospital or newborn stage: Aden blankets are great to have though we ditched swaddle blankets for the swaddleme zip up pod. They are snug and fuss proof! Going home outfit for baby (we just packed comfy pjs, literally babies live in pjs for the 1st few months…at lease mine did), leave space for alllll the free baby/postpartum goodies you’ll take from the hospital (ask for all the diapers, pads, Vaseline for those initial poops and his private parts if you’re circumcising 😛) granny panties etc haha) dry shampoo in case you can’t shower. For my first, I literally did not shower till I got home and it felt like gods gift to have a moment to shower and I sobbed like crazy. Hormones will be nuts so pack all the grace and patience you can give yourself!!! You’ve got this!

Again huge congrats to you and Ben~
I had my baby boy on this February.
Other things to pack into your hospital bag:
    1. Postpartum items
    2. 2 onesie go home outfit( you may want to pack smaller new born size and 0-3 months outfit. Just in case.)
    3. Swaddle
    4. Beanie hat for baby
    5. Mittens and socks ( can pack those onesie that have both forgot what it calls)
    6. Burp cloth ( just in case esp during car ride back home. )
FYI: I found Vaseline baby protecting jelly works best for baby nappy rash ( just my opinion)
All the best Jenn and will keep you and baby boy in prayers for smooth delivery. Also Ben too

Prep the refrigerator for two weeks with easy to grab and warmed up snacks, meals and most of all fluids for both you and Ben. Best advice ever let Ben help whenever he can. You have to take care of yourself and heal too. You know when you are close to healing properly is when you can reverse the car. Crazy but boy oh boy, I thought I was good and nope pressed on the breaks quickly, and took my butt back inside to heal some more.
Ben it is okay to feel alittle helpless but remember you are observing and protecting your family.
Remember to communicate with one another. This is new even for the baby so give each other a break. Nobody is grading you. If something feels weird please seek help - postpartum can happen to both mom and dad.
Enjoy each other - time flies🥳

Jenn, cutest mama to be! Just had my third child. Bring an extra bag to take home hospital freebies (baby diapers, baby blankets, pads, squeeze bottles & cooling pads for down there, etc). Packing your own snacks in case you have a long labor. Don’t necessarily need this for your hospital bag, but totally recommend getting adult diapers to wear at home. Game changer when it comes to the postpartum bleeding. So excited for your little guy!

Things to consider for hospital bag: heavy flow pads you like (hospital usually provides generic ones), underwear that is comfortable/supportive but you don't mind ruining, nipple pads (takes a couple days for milk to come in so you may not need these yet), cooling gel nipple pads (very soothing for sore nipples), slippers, breastfeeding pillow (really helps with positioning tiny newborns).. Most hospitals are well stocked though, so don't worry about bringing everything. And if possible, don't bring stuff you would be really upset to lose (jewelry, keepsakes, etc.) - it's a hazy/busy time and easy to misplace things. Also don't forget stuff for Dad! E.g. toothbrush, change of clothes, etc. And for the baby, would recommend bringing a couple of size options for clothing (newborn and 1-3mo). For you at home, would also recommend Tucks (witch hazel wipes) and a sitz bath to help soothe you down there. With my first, it took a while to get into a rhythm/routine with breastfeeding and I found a tracking app or simple timer helpful to remind me how long it had been, which side to start feeding from, etc.

Get velcro swaddles! They ususally can't unwrap and often you can change their nappies without fully unwrapping them so no need to disturb their sleep.

Again, congrats Jen!!! Idk if you already have, but I always like to encourage my fellow mamas to look up what to expect your body might go through postpartum and what care you have to do after given birth. I feel like it’s not talked about enough. Whatever supplies the hospital gives you, like ice packs, super large pads, witch hazel pads, dermaplast…don’t be afraid to ask for more!!! My favorite “hack” was buying adult diapers, the always discreet brand was a huge help- so that I didn’t have to deal with the mesh underwear the hospital gives you.

I had a baby boy this January too! Can’t be any more excited for you. :) for the little one, I recommend taking two sizes of outfits because he can be smaller or bigger than expected! I was a minimalist when I packed my hospital bag, but that was one thing I made sure to do. The hospital will have everything else. Make your nurse your best friend and he/she will hook you up with lots of goodies to take home (I’m a nurse and this is true lol)

I'd recommend some snacks etc if you can eat and also drinks!
also prep the things for your puerperium! make it as comfy as possible and have everything you need in reach! ☀️

So excited for you! Not sure if you heard about this, but I think you would really enjoy using a “moms one line a day” journal! It has space for one line a day for five years to write about your little one. It’s fast and simply journaling and I really wished I started with my son since his birth! I think you could really appreciate it especially since time literally flies when your baby is growing! 😊

I’ve heard a powerstrip is very handy in the hospital so you have more outlets available and an ipad for when you are just to tired to read but also need entertainment and pre-download some series so youre not worrying about the wifi! A soft blanket/pillow for ben and yourself if you want to be extra comfy. Bath slippers for showering and normal slippers or thick socks if your hospital doesnt supply them! Some poeple really get cold feet in hospitals after birth. Granola bars for you/ben for easy and quick food acces! Wishing you so much luck and joy💕

The hospital will provide a lot of the postpartum care items so I wouldn’t take up space with those in the hospital bag, but take as many as you can before you leave and make sure you have stuff at home! (peri bottle, witch hazel, depends, cooling pads). I would say add some nipple pads, a mini fan, and hair ties! for the baby- 2 outfits to be safe, burp cloths, a hat, socks, and mittens. the hospital will provide other things you may need so take advantage!

You are so lucky with all the family ,friends and partner besides you for support. Everything will be much easier. Watching this as I nurse my third baby! They’re not glamorous, but have adult diapers on hand! Super helpful if your water breaks before labor and for postpartum. Also, a peri bottle is helpful for when you go to the bathroom after giving birth. The hospital will usually give you one but the Frida Mom one has an angled nozzle that works much better. Best of luck to you! Just remember that your body was made to do this!

I took a bigger bathrobe, it was cold in the hospital so I’m glad I had that to keep me warm especially when I walked around my delivery room. Though the hospital provided the thick pads and witch hazel pads I brought a couple more. I took hicut underwear to contain the thick pads lol for baby I took a welcome to the world outfit. In his diaper bag I had an extra set of cloths, diapers and wipes (hospital provided these as well), a clean and sanitized milk bottle, little readymade formula for the drive home. 2 receiving blankets and a bigger blanket. What helped me meditate during my contractions was imagining running on the dirt trail back at home, hearing my shoes hit the sand and my rhythmic breathing, the visualization of me passing the trees, the canyon and even the dogs running with me towards the sunset.

Literally the only thing we needed for our baby (aside from outfit/swaddle for birth announcement picture) was baby nail clippers. Our son was born with such long nails and the ONLY thing the hospital didn’t provide was nail clippers. The baby nail scissors are actually the easiest thing to use. Also don’t forget nail file. Other than that the hospital provided all diapers, wipes, hat, blankets, even onesies and pacifiers.
