I need to inform you on something. In Gordon the Big Engine, the punishment was that Gordon was not allowed to pull passanger trains anymore until he proved himself. That's why he did not pick Gordon over Henry in Paint Pots a d Queens at first
I’ve also gained some newfound appreciation for the Railway Series thanks to this video. I really begin to feel the realistic industry of the railway in there (which I as a railfan really adore). I also spotted new details in the characters expressions such as their mouths opening slightly and eye directions and I’ve also started to see more of the little imperfections in Awdry’s writing, showing that even he wasn’t exactly perfect.
To rundown every key word for the books (Part 1) 1. Three Railway Engines (Authentic) 2. Thomas the Tank Engine (Influential) 3. James the Red Engine (Sad) 4. Tank Engine Thomas Again (Light) 5. Troublesome Engines (Respectable) 6. Henry the Green Engine (Fun) 7. Toby the Tram Engine (Charming) 8. Gordon the Big Engine (Strong) 9. Edward the Blue Engine (Typical) 10. Four Little Engines (Diverse) 11. Percy the Small Engine (Personality) (Okay, you said 'Percy', but it encapsulates Percy's personality, so...) 12. The Eight Famous Engines (Beginning) 13. Duck and the Diesel Engine (Captivating) 14. The Little Old Engine (Whimsical) 15. The Twin Engines (Mixed) 16. Branch Line Engines (Amusing) 17. Gallant Old Engine (Spectacular) 18. Stepney the Bluebell Engine (Disorganised) 19. Mountain Engines (Thoughtful) 20. Very Old Engines (Heartfelt) 21. Main Line Engines (Fantastic) 22. Small Railway Engines (Decent) 23. Enterprising Engines (Gritty) 24. Oliver the Western Engine (Delightful) 25. Duke the Lost Engine (Masterpiece) 26. Tramway Engines (Fitting)
I think the stories were judged fairly here for the large part, though, first of all, I must clarify Edward and Toby playing more as constants outside their crucial stories was kind of the point Awdry was getting at with them. The other, less experienced, engines tend to exert themselves without being necessarily harmful, which makes it more telling when the two wise ones stand up to do the right thing when others are helpless or in trouble. - The point about expositions; Awdry needed to convey the greater messages of his work by setting things up in the detail he so admired. Regarding 'Skarloey Remembers', the point you kind of missed was that a reminiscing Skarloey was taking the opportunity to tell things Edward had very likely not gotten the chance to appreciate before when they were much busier. In addition, Edward chose to change the subject from Rheneas's absence rather than continue to dwell on it and worry Skarloey further. Gordon's namesake book - it was in part meant to show how Gordon grows to respect how hard his friends work during his disgrace period, hence it cuts away from focusing on him. - I will agree that The Twin Engines was not really set up as it should have been, and 'The Missing Coach''s confused plot left much to be desired. I say a similar thing about Stepney's book. Considering Rev. Awdry normally showcased history of real engines in his work, it is odd he passively ignored referencing the real history of Stepney's long working life. His direct basis avoided going for scrap essentially twice, as his class was already being replaced at the turn of the 20th century by larger tank engines, only for some light railways to require a good few of them to be kept over. That might have made for a fun piece of satire when the Diesel claimed he was superior to steam in the final story. - The point on female representation you give is similar to a point I raised before that Rev. Awdry was cautious about introducing engine characters to specifically appease female readers, given the general atmosphere was that the railway fans he appeased to were predominantly boys. In creating my master draft for my "Thomas & Friends"-themed project pitch, which I submitted to Mattel's CEO, amongst my other considerations, I gave thought on how to make it authentic to Awdry's vision whilst introducing female engines in a meaningful way. @@TheLazyFusspot_3428 neither. I’m talking about how Little Western (the story following Escape) just feels like the conclusion to Escape and why it’s weird that we have to read a whole other story for it 👍🏻
Why „Henry the green engine“ has 5 stories is a mystery. Also „Henry the green engine“ , „Edward the blue engine“ and „James the red engine“ are books where the adaptions are better than the original stories imo.
Whatever it is, make sure it's something that you really love talking about when it comes to TTTE or any other thing you want to speak about with your channel! For me personally, I enjoyed and still enjoy ranking videos which is why my first video was a ranking of every episode from S1 of Thomas. Thank you for watching!
i honestly really like your idea of making bill and ben female, because as you said it would more female representation to a series lacking female characters also great video man! really enjoyed it!
Personally enterprising engines is my favorite RWS book it has the best things like The entire story escape The entire story of super rescue Henry the chad The flying Scotsman Oliver and bear Gordon understanding that this brothers are dead
It took some time to realize you are reviewing books from your own railway and your old Mid Sodor railway. Cool.
IT'S HERE!! ALERT THE VILLAGERS!!! Oh this is just what I need to see today after a very rough time. Thank you so much my friend :)
It’s my pleasure, and thank you for the support! 👍🏻
Sorry you had a rough time 😔
It was a bit weird to me that you didn't mention that Alexander Reginald Payne was the one who first drew the book "Thomas the tank engine".

1:47:49 I just realised, Henry pulling that long train in Henry Gets It Wrong might have been a reference to Super Rescue!
Possibly!
This was a fun ranking video. I’m thinking of reviewing the Railway Series at some point.
Thank you!

Took about 3 months. Thank you for the support 👍🏻

Also, thank you for the support! 👍🏻

I still wish the crew had the budget to finish the model from Scotsman for the episode „Tender Engine“.

James the red engine was Dalbys first illustration, book 1 after Middleton and 2 were first by Reginald Paine then re done by Dalby.

Thank you for these fascinating observations! They helped me understand some of the stories better! 👍🏻
Talking about the topic of _Escape_ , are you referring to the closing line in the book story, or the conclusion in the TVS adaptation?
@@TheLazyFusspot_3428 neither. I’m talking about how Little Western (the story following Escape) just feels like the conclusion to Escape and why it’s weird that we have to read a whole other story for it 👍🏻
@@PeePeeSam That's why the TVS merged both Escape and LE.
