    Bike Pump Buying Guide
Before we tell you what to look for when choosing a bike pump, we’ll give you a sneak peek at our 3 top picks:
    1. Topeak Joe Blow Sport - Our favorite pump overall
    2. Lezyne Steel Floor Drive - Our favorite presta valve pump
    3. Schwinn Air Center Plus - Best on a budget
We’ll go into WHY we love those pumps later but first, what actually matters when choosing a bike pump?
    1. Know your valve type
Bikes have either Schrader or Presta valves. Make sure your bike pump has a head that is compatible with your valve style. Most pumps are compatible with both, but some are easier to use with Presta valves than others.
    2. Know your wheel sizes
If you have 12″ kids bikes, some bike tire pumps are much easier to use than others. The smaller the head of the pump, the better it will work with those tiny 12″ wheels.
    3. Stability
Some floor bike pumps fall over quite easily, which can be really frustrating when you’re trying to attach the head to the tire valve. Bike pumps with 3 feet are more stable than pumps with just 2 feet. We also prefer when the feet are weighted to aid with stabilization
    4. Tube Length
Pumps with longer tubes give you more flexibility when attaching the head to the valve than pumps with shorter tubes. Longer tubes also allow you to attach the pump’s head to the valve while standing up.
    5. Ball and Bladder Needles
Most bike pumps come with needles for pumping up balls and inflatables. The best pumps also come with convenient storage areas so you won’t lose the needles
    6. Tire Pressure
Road bike tires are required to be pumped up to a much higher psi than standard tires. If you have a road bike, be sure to select a pump that can easily reach at least 120 psi (some we tested could not). Kids, mountain, and hybrid bikes rarely reach psi’s over 80. On any bike, the recommended psi for the tire can be found on the tire’s sidewall.
And now for details on our top 3 bike pump picks! Each one of these pumps are compatible with both presta valves and schrader valves.
Topeak Joe Blow Sport III - All Around Best Pick
The Topeak Joe Blow stands out from the crowd because it’s easy to use with a wide variety of bikes .
The head is unique because its locking lever is on the side of the head rather than on top, making it easier to maneuver in small places. Schrader valves attach on one side of the head and Presta on the other.
Lezyne Steel Floor Drive - Best Presta Valve Pump
The Lezyne Steel Floor Pump is the ultimate pump for families who regularly use Presta valves on their mountain or road bikes. With a screw-on head to protect Presta valve cores, a built-in Presta core remover (essential for running tubeless set-ups), as well as a pressure release button in the head to fine-tune psi, the Lezyne is impressive.
Schwinn Air Center Plus - Great budget buy when used at lower pressures
The Schwinn Air Center Plus is a good-quality, affordable buy for those on a budget. With a sturdy base, enclosed needle storage, and an accurate psi gauge, the Schwinn is a solid bike pump.

I own a Schwinn steel floor pump 20" with air gauge for 15 years. Never miss any step. The cord is kind of too short but it is an emergency tools anyway.

This was a great review. Only thing I would have added would be a test to see how easy a pump would be for a kid to use, maybe a ten year old or so.

How Come Schwinn is so cheap in hose? Is there a good reason for that? 😢😮😢😢

Schwinn produces lower quality products to offer a cheap price point that many families prefer. If you would like a higher quality product, you will need to pay more, but you should look at Topeak.

It’s a disappointment, these bicycle pumps are just not going to be good. If you blow your tube on your bike then you have a spare but have to rush to a compressor. On top of that you better have a presta valve adapter to use a gas station compressor. You also need a gauge. It’s kind of why are these pumps not so well off, they should be doing a hell of alot better job.

You are right in that pumps in general typically fail in when it comes to dialing in PSI. The average biker and family, however, just isn't going to spend over $100 on a pump that has a reliable PSI gauge. Considering most bikers are also not riding on high PSI road tires, blowing a tube is pretty rare. Not saying that it doesn't happen, but we pump tires up daily and have never had a tube blow on us.
