Mozza once dropped a couple of quid in my guitar case when I was busking. I said ‘Thank you!’, he said ‘See ya!’. Makes me smile to this day. I bought some Rich Tea biscuits with his kind donation and whilst I haven’t busked in many years, whenever I have a cuppa I tend to remember that moment.

It's rare that you have a band with a guitarist as exceptional as Marr who plays utterly without ego. You can count on one hand how many (brief) solos there are in Smiths records, he never sounds like he's constrained by this and fighting to break out. Brilliant player and brilliant musician.

He joked about his perception in media etc and never preached or anything so he still puts on an amazing show and people shouldn't be put off by his politics or anything and still catch him while he's still here.

Incredible song. What I love about Mozza's delivery of the line " life is very long when you're lonely" is that it sounds like elation more than sadness. Like he is smiling inside and thinking to himself " I am totally fine with that."

On the way home we talked about how some of our fav hard rockers are no longer or can’t tour anymore, Whitesnake, Van Halen. So you have to keep going so this 48 year old can get his fix of glorious showmanship, musicianship, humorous rock n roll fanfare. Can you tell me any other bands that can deliver this package? Cheers to you and the band
A few nights ago, I was walking past the bathroom where my 13 y/o daughter was taking a shower. I heard an unexpected sound so I placed my ear on the door. I was at the Brixton Academy (the best venue) in October '86 to see them play this. Bloody marvellous and thank you Justin for shining a light on this song. Great Channel - you've got me listening to Five Leaves Left, The Bends and this in the space of a few days - I haven't enjoyed music so much in years.
I have massive trouble "separating the art from the artist" on almost every occasion. Morrissey is one of the few instances where I couldn't hate his art if I tried. Love your channel, Justin!
I saw them on The Queen is Dead tour at Nottingham Royal Concert Hall in 1986, what a gig! They opened with this song with Mike Joyce's drum intro kicking it all off. Craig Gannon was brought in on rhythm guitar for this tour too. My favourite band ever and lovely to know you like it too Justin! Love your reviews, thank you!!
I'm 6 years older than you, Justin (I graduated from high school the year The Smiths broke up), and at the time I was not really a fan of The Smiths (or any of the other British, post-punk and indie bands of the 80s) but as I've grown old, I find I have a much greater appreciation for the entire era. So I thoroughly enjoyed your analysis. I also appreciate your ability to separate the art from the artist (something that people don't seem to be able to do anymore). We need more of that.
Maybe their most underrated or overlooked songs. It's absolutely brilliant. And the "Life is very long when you're lonely" line, it's one of those transcendent lines he's so great at. Arguably, their best.
I like to think that Morrissey is happiest when he's yodelling. It doesn't happen much but there's evidence of it from the closing minute on The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (which also sounds lovely).
This is the best episode yet. Justin's observations are truly insightful (and amusing), and they indicate a genuine fan. Sometimes the greatness of The Smiths is simply taken as read, so it's nice to have a critique that foregrounds what makes them timeless by utilising less obvious examples.
I love your enthusiasm when talking about the smiths. It rivals mine when I talk about Love and Rockets or The The. I also love the smiths. (honourable mention to Marr/Johnson collab on the the's Dusk)

In my list of top bands of my life. The Smiths were vital to my high school experience and are still a huge part of my musical life. Absolutely love them
You do realise that in order for one culture to displace another, the original culture has to be somehow removed. Immigrants moving to a place does not remove the 'native culture' but people leaving a place does.
I’ve never sat down to listen to morrissey or the smiths but this guy really does have that “thing” and something else. Real musicians without any fakeness edited into the track. It’s a dying art being true musicians and the darkness is one of the very last of true musicians. In my opinion at least. Great channel Justin, great Taylor tribute also well done mate. Xxxxx
Morrissey and the Smiths are as important and relevant to British music as The Beatles. Saw him live last week, there is also a lot of footage on youtube. Completely amazing, his voice was beautiful. Both old and new material was sung. One of the best gigs I have ever had the privilege to see.
Thank you for doing The Smiths. I was listening to them yesterday and wanted to ask you to critique ‘how soon is now’ but I’m shy ☺️…and shyness can stop you! Love your channel btw ❤️
You are very clever to prepare all these videos before you went on tour Justin. Looking forward to seeing the Darkness play in a few hours in Canberra Australia. Just cracked my first warm up beer!! See you soon big nuts!! 😂
And I will help you fight too. I have this album on vinyl and it's one of my favorites of all time. By the way, I'm looking for The Darkness albums on vinyl but I do have the first three on CD. Thank you for giving me a bit of joy in my life. Much appreciated and love from Georgia in the United States.
Cracked up at the Minder reference to Stock Aiken and Waterman. Back in early 2000s he and (I beleive) Sinita were at a restaurant table next to me...he was drunk, loud and laughing his head off...it made the night
Thank you Justin. I’m a huge Smiths fan but like you adore Mozza’s solo stuff. Would “Let Me Kiss You” be worth a video? I bloody love the lyrical turn in that song! Love & hugs xx
I’ve always struggled being able to separate the art from the artist. Even times when I can, usually at some point while I’m listening to certain artist’s music, whatever it is that I don’t like about them pops up in my head. Sometimes I can ignore it, sometimes I can’t. And when I can’t, it just kills whatever good vibes I was feeling.
Ive loved morrissey regardless and imagined his words were twisted a lot but i heard the libertines drummer tell a story about him recently which makes me think differently about him
I'm the same. If I find out the artist is problematic it taints their work even if i try to look past it. There's been a few over the years and things are never quite the same.
Glad someone mentioned this. I love the Smiths so much, but I do struggle to separate the music from the racist crap Morrissey has come out with. Very disappointing. Especially because so many of his lyrics arguably speak to and for minorities and maligned people.
This whole album is incredible, but I say that about every The Smiths album 😂 Morrissey's lyrics are absolutely genius in my opinion, and I know you love a good double entendre! But I agree with you as well that his voice is uniquely beautiful. The "whoa" effect with Morrissey is funny, as he throws these in quite often in his songs, and often I think he sings just to hear himself sing... But I want to hear him sing, too, so I'll happily eat it up! And he's still got it! If you have a chance to see him live, do it! His voice is just heavenly, and his range is still unbelievable. Marr's guitar is unrivaled as well. He truly is such a talent. And like we hear in The Queen Is Dead, his playing evokes a mood. It isn't just notes, it is a complete sound, feeling that enwraps your mind. He also seems like such a humble dude!! Although selfishly, I wish Morrissey and Marr weren't over, their combined talents created something special and unparalleled, and the albums they did make are perfect.
Justin, I love your analysis and the songs you love. I wouldn't have guessed you loved the Smiths, Gunther and Verve, but you defy all expectations. Champion 🏆
Big fan of The Darkness and your channel. Had tickets to the show in Cleveland that had to be rescheduled for your throat surgery. Was in attendance at The Nautica for the make up gig. One of the best nights of my life. The last show my younger brother and I saw together before he died. Anyway, please continue to analyze The Smiths. One of the most important bands full stop. 👍
The Smiths are legend. I agree with JH. No matter if Morrissey is a difficult person to work with, what they created was astonishing and remains timeless for me. Johnny Marr is one of the best and the rhythm section was highly underrated. RIP Andy Rourke!
Love the Smiths they are amazing this slbum is so good everyone should listen to it at least once.Morrissey is so fantastic he is surely a music genious love him ❤
Smashing vid yet again Justin massive fan of you, the Darkness and your channel. Just saw you live at the Enmore in Sydney 2 days ago and still buzzing. Seen you 3 times now but first with Rufus and man he is a machine you guys were brilliant. Quick question(gear nerd question) if I may I noticed you guys had speaker cabs and no amps on stage so can I ask what are you guys running and what amp simulators are you using? Marshall plexi’s for your brother and EVH for you? You sounded huge whatever you were using. Also your comment on Polyphia’s knitwear had me and my band mates in stitches. Love your work Justin keep ‘em coming🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
The Headmaster Ritual has some of my favourite ever lyrics. His lyricism is unparalleled in originality. And he's a colourful character. I don't think he's actually that bad. At least, not as bad as people make him out to be.
He's really not once you realize most of what he's been criticized for has been the way he speaks about and the content of his politics. So many highly respected and celebrated musicians have done things seen as 'evil' in the eyes of society, but Morrissey rarely ever does anything. At least not nearly as much as he speaks.
They were a band for the time. Sadly, they weren't punk enough for me so I came in late to the game of loving the Smiths. Now, they are firmly entrenched in my love of 80's post.
I love The Smiths and I love your channel. You are very intelligent, you speak of what matters and you are making videos consistently. You are great! I love Morrissey too btw lol And Dead or Alive were great too!
@@carrieanne5415 Lol.. That's brilliant. I thought you mightve been confused by the reference but nope, and thank you (or your folks I guess.. 😂) for reminding me of that great song listened to it loads since yesterday.
The album 'The Queen is Dead' sold no more than 700 000 copies but still it was their biggest seller. Incredibly underrated, the Smiths were simply too good.
Just such a great breakdown. Honestly, the entire album of "The Queen Is Dead" is one of the greatest albums of all time. Just so brilliant, every song.
What an awesome band. The Smiths came in right behind U2 with a similar busy/heavy rhythm section that seems to evoke a sense of imbalance, uncertainty and danger. They made some exciting and wonderful music.
An absolute monster of a track to open the album. Only bettered by Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others to close it out. For me, that song remains Johnny Marr's best work, those multi-layered guitar tracks, sublime.
Saw him live a few weeks back, still sounds great and I fooking love him too! Definitely a genius and a great song. Had hoped he'd do it live but maybe going a little soft 🤣
Only had a passing respect for the smiths back in the 80s,but been digging Morrissey's solo stuff last cpl of years,so much went to see him few weeks ago.Was brilliant!
Great vid as per, Justin. I must have been 13/14 when I discovered The Smiths. Changed my life for the better. Some 22 years later and I was lucky enough to see the great man live last Friday in Stockton. Still sounding absolutely amazing and appearing to be really enjoying his music. An unforgettable night.
God, I adored The Smiths - the perfect combination of Morrissey and Marr - something to rescue us from the cack, as Morrissey said, “Hang the DJ, as the music that they constantly play, has nothing to do with my life” omg that resonated. Morrissey was God and we were his love children …..
I'm a big fan of The Smiths, Morrissey's solo career and Johnny Marr's solo music. I saw the Smiths live on their US tour back in around 1986 in Washington D.C.
Marr & Morrissey .... one of the greatest ever writing teams. Going to try and get some whoa whoa on my next album. I managed to get ‘risible ‘ into one of my songs.
So happy you’ve done this video Justin and the Morrissey one recently, I can’t even put into words how much Moz and the Smiths mean to me. I saw him live at the Palladium last week and I have to say he has never sounded better 👌
Stumbled on justins podcast and think they are briliant , entertaining educational with comedy and great comedy timing thrown in … well done ive subscribed . Best thing for me on youtube at min
The Smiths had such an underrated rhythm section. Marr is incredible as he is but the boys in the back were driving things as in this song, Marr could establish incredible interplay with bass player on "The Night Has Opened My Eyes", and bass player stays properly in back on Marr's guitar workout on "Barbarism Starts at Home." Great titles all across here but obviously great and very literary lyrics, too.
The Smith's will always be my favorite band ever. I don't care what their beliefs are politically or whom they pray or don't pray to because it's about the music to me. I actually lived in a time when others could coexist with each other and respect was a given. Fast forward to 2012 and man of mam how times have changed. I miss the better times even if life was still harder because we didn't have the internet like today or a phone in our hands. It was awesome. I loved going to band practice and then to the library. Times were and will always be better in the 80's and some of the 90's.
Yo Justin I also love Morrissey and by bizarre coincidence I played "I Could Be So Good For You" by Dennis Waterman at an open mic last week. I don't even know why cos I've never played the song before or since. I I'm thinking "That's Livin' Alright" is also a fairly solid tune and I'm considering doing that next week. :) Cool video man thanks for the uploads.

@jack_in_the_green Who are the indigenous in "England" then? Should they be protected from Scottish immigration, or French?
He's already critiqued How Soon Is Now! Was a few weeks ago...
@@neilg7804 I’m slowly working my way back through the vids as I not long since discovered Justin’s channel. I shall go find and check it out :)
This is by far my favourite song of The Smiths. Lyrics are the best, and the instrumentation is the best. One of their few real rocking songs.
Great track! Johnny is brilliant as usual and Andy's bass is used to great effect. Mike's drums are finally elevated from a background role.
What a beautiful voice you have Justin....!!!!!
I agree. He should start a band, could probably go far.
@@Spaxcore 🤣
My favourite band..... The first ever gig i went to was Derby assembly rooms early 1980s, outstanding live performance.
Glad you enjoyed the show Joe, I'll be able to answer questions when I'm back!
In 1989 I visited Italy with my family & I bought 2 tapes there for my walkman - louder than bombs & anthrax state of euphoria. I loved them both.
Was truly wonderful watching you play with young Wolfgang at Taylor’s tribute. Really super.
The best opening track of an album one can ask for.
I hung onto every word you said
This was so brilliant
Astute & entertaining
Thank you so much
The Headmaster Ritual has some of my favourite ever lyrics. His lyricism is unparalleled in originality. And he's a colourful character. I don't think he's actually that bad. At least, not as bad as people make him out to be.
He uses his voice as an instrument amazingly in that song too
Thom Yorke does a great cover
He's really not once you realize most of what he's been criticized for has been the way he speaks about and the content of his politics. So many highly respected and celebrated musicians have done things seen as 'evil' in the eyes of society, but Morrissey rarely ever does anything. At least not nearly as much as he speaks.
Went to see morrisey at Brighton centre on Friday
Great show he’s voice was spot on
Saw Morrissey in Concert in Brighton just a few days ago, he was awesome.
Was he still wearing a For Britain badge?
Please consider covering Suede. Their new album is fantastic and their catalog is criminally underappreciated.
They were a band for the time. Sadly, they weren't punk enough for me so I came in late to the game of loving the Smiths. Now, they are firmly entrenched in my love of 80's post.
Love the Smiths...so fortunate I was able to see them twice in California during their brief existence.
I love The Smiths and I love your channel. You are very intelligent, you speak of what matters and you are making videos consistently. You are great! I love Morrissey too btw lol And Dead or Alive were great too!
"heyyy Carrie Anne what's your game now can anybody play" 🎶
@@damotheman4196 My parents heard that song 2 weeks after I was born riding down the road. I love that song! lol
@@carrieanne5415 Lol.. That's brilliant. I thought you mightve been confused by the reference but nope, and thank you (or your folks I guess.. 😂) for reminding me of that great song listened to it loads since yesterday.
@@damotheman4196 I looked it up and gave it a listen too lol Have a great day and thank you for the reminder! xx
Indeed Justin, there IS magic in those Smiths albums
Had hoped he'd do it live but maybe going a little soft 🤣
he aint going soft phil.............🤣i saw him in glasgow................never sounded better................or harder 🤣
My favourite band ever, this song just blew my mind when I first heard it - "Life is very long, when you're lonely"
Only had a passing respect for the smiths back in the 80s,but been digging Morrissey's solo stuff last cpl of years,so much went to see him few weeks ago.Was brilliant!
Johnny Marr is an absolute genius
ALAW
"says nothing to me about my life"
The Guardian and billy bragg disowned him for his far right stance. They tore into him and destroyed their smiths collection... such drama...
Just reminded me of 'Irish Blood, English Heart'. Nice one!
So happy you’ve done this video Justin and the Morrissey one recently, I can’t even put into words how much Moz and the Smiths mean to me. I saw him live at the Palladium last week and I have to say he has never sounded better 👌
Was he still wearing a For Britain badge?
Stumbled on justins podcast and think they are briliant , entertaining educational with comedy and great comedy timing thrown in … well done ive subscribed . Best thing for me on youtube at min
The Queen Is Dead album is bangers from start to finish.
Grew up on the smiths, in the 80s. Still love them, and Morrissey!
I have always loved this song. Thank you for doing a video on it and paying homage to one of the greatest bands ever.
I'm thinking "That's Livin' Alright" is also a fairly solid tune and I'm considering doing that next week. :)
Cool video man thanks for the uploads.
I saw Johnny Marr last month, he opened for the Killers. He is still amazing. So much talent.
