Here we go again guns kill people ALL by themselves now trucks ? Don't blame the drivers of said trucks! That means make semi trucks smaller too!! How about everyone pay attention to what and who is around you!!
The automotive industry has always been low hanging fruit. Instead of holding people accountable for paying attention, not being high , drunk etc. it’s easier to blame the trucks on the road. How far do you cast the web ? Amazon trucks ? School buses ? R.V.s ? Semi trucks ? The hood on any of those vehicles are even bigger than a pick up. People are the problem , as they always have been.
You can thank the CAFE standards for making vehicles larger and larger. There is an absolute correlation of size vs year. They will continue to get larger until we remove those standards. That is why you will never see a small 70s and 80s pickup truck again. Look at the maverick that is so large in comparison to those small trucks of yesterday.
Let’s just say they come out with some new law where it requires auto manufacturers to make these trucks pedestrian safe. What happens to aftermarket companies that make lift kits? Would they be outlawed? I drive a lot early morning and what I see in my area area people on bikes and clothes all in dark colors with no reflectors crossing the street and it is scary.
everyone wants to blame someone else. look in the USA, everyone wants to sue someone, as a canadian my kids even picking up on the foolishness of it in the usa... think if they get in an accident they can just sue. not the case
@@gsguy9359 well I didn’t say I support gun control but Canada doesn’t have an average of almost one school shooting a day. The sad thing is sometimes you need to protect people from problems they don’t even know they have. I am not a big law advocate.
I installed a $129.00 blue tooth front facing camera on my 2024 Nissan Frontier front license plate and I can see what's in front of me, it's also easier to park with the front facing camera. A camera will solve this problem and all trucks should have them!
If you walk into the road you are equally responsible to check conditions, I know myself if I get hit by a vehicle I’m going to lose , who cares who’s right or wrong if you’re killed or disabled!
When i was in kindergarten, we had a class called "safety town". We learned basic road laws on big wheels and were taught to look both ways before going in the street.
It has to do with energy dissipation over distances. Getting hit by a car means your body has to accelerate to the speed of the car. If your head can have an extra fraction of a second to do that, it goes a long way to the survivability of the accident. If you’re getting hit by a truck with a 5 1/2’ grill and you’re 5 1/2’ tall, your head doesn’t have a chance to accelerate over a distance. Grill, skull, brain. I hope truck designers find a way to solve this without making pickups look like Saabs.
You did forget about how quiet new vehicle are inside and outside the cab. Some are so quiet I basically don't realize they are there until there basically right on top of you
Distractive dash tablets in modern cars. Impaired walking; non reflective hoodies/clothing, earbuds, cellphones. Less over the hood visibility on modern trucks.
We moved into our typical suburban home 24 years ago. This neighborhood was developed in the early ‘90’s. On our street, there were no streetlights for about 3 blocks. The city did not require the developer to put any in. In order to street lights put in, you had to get consensus of everyone along the street to add them. And, then, the 4 houses surrounding the proposed light location had to pay for them. One of my pet peeves is the number of people that still walk in the street when there are 3 ft sidewalks on each side. Common sense has left the building!
Maybe pedestrians should be fined for using their cell phones while walking, especially crossing streets. If it is illegal for drivers to use them when they drive because it is distracting the same should apply to the pedestrians too because ultimately they become part of the traffic when the start crossing a street.
My friend's 2005 Silverado and my 2005 Titan had significantly larger and taller hoods. My 2023 Titan is much harder to see over and to park. Even with the added sensors it's still undesirable. Especially off road.
Truthfully all of this regulation is pointless if the user puts anything on the front of their truck. I investigated a crash where a work truck struck a ford explorer waiting at red light about 50mph. Killed 2 out of 3 occupants in the explorer. The truck involved was a a 2500 or 3500 ram with a push bar on the front. The airbags in the truck didn’t even go off.
It’s good your thoughts on this issue and your comments and I appreciate that ….a couple of my observations as a driver for many years and spending many hours every day on the road ! a couple points that maybe weren’t highlighted, one is that in general we have a higher population density, another major factor is the overall lack of security and stability in peoples lives is declining fairly rapidly !!!thereby leaving many people more careless about their own actions , so safety gets put on the back burner , people may also tend to mix reality with video games ! but the point you make are certainly very good points. Thank you very much.
A few years ago some young guy in a f250 size truck was driving home but was seen by bystanders as driving erratically down a back country road. He swung wide on a turn and struck a small bus carrying several elderly people from a local church at a high rate of speed. Everyone in the bus died and of course the guy driving the truck survived with minimal injuries. Investigation revealed he was "tired".
My daughter is 13 now; one of the things we do together is ride bikes. We have almost been hit at least three different times. We don't have headphones in, skip stop signs or any of that crap, and it's in the middle of the day. We're just crossing at crosswalks where we have waited for the signal and people blow through the light. I'm not saying that truck design or anything like that is going to solve this problem. If anything I think it's people Fing around on their phones. If I'm driving, I'm not texting or yakking on my phone. I'm in charge of a 6000+ lb chunk of steel on the move.
Trucks are not only getting bigger, but to add to that problem people are adding various lift kits to their trucks which now raise the trucks even more. It makes sense if you are off roading but the sad reality is most trucks out by where I live are just mall crawlers
I understand stand some of your sentiments. However, the same was said about seatbelts, airbags, front collision alerts and the list goes on and on. The height of trucks is an issue. They have gotten higher and higher to accommodate progressive rear springs and also lift kits. And I am a truck owner who’s been driving pickups for over 40 years. So let’s figure out smart ways to have trucks and make them safer at the same time. Unfortunately, all the safety features above wouldn’t have happened without government regulations.
We probably also need to post warnings that the exhaust pipes are hot and can cause serious burns…what ever happened to looking both ways before you cross the street?
It would be an interesting exercise to look back at NHTSA regulations that have gone into effect over the last 10 years and determine the cost that has been added to vehicles as a result.
The studies never perform a full back ground check on the cause of the accident, such as person was looking at their phone not paying attention, person was not looking running across the street to catch a bus, etc. Their conclusion someone was hit by truck it was the trucks fault. In my area their are considering putting traffic lights in sidewalks so people can see the traffic lights while looking down at their phones. Someone get hurt for not paying attention it is not your fault is was someone else, lobby the government to pass legislation to protect inattentive people.
You cannot remediate all risks or in the is case, deaths. Almost a third of the cost of new vehicles is due to complying with “safety” measures. The problem is that the government believes they should remediate all risks, which is impossible. And, any effort towards that goal simply makes the product less affordable for a greater number of consumers. The irony here is that this effort forces the public to hold onto older vehicles longer or purchasing vehicles with far fewer safety features, including some that are actually beneficial relative to cost. You can always count on the government to sway a fly with a MOAB, when a tack hammer would suffice.
Its both drivers and people. Drivers staring at their phones while driving not paying attention to driving. And people walking into the road because pedestrians now have the right of way. My mom taught me to stay out of the street and be careful when you have to cross the street.
Trucks are so damn big because of how the emissions laws work. It is impossible to make a small truck that complies, but the way the rules are written, bigger pickup trucks get looser regulation.
I propose a 20 million dollar tax payer funded grant so I can study this issue. I’ll wrap it up in a few years and let you know that things didn’t go the way we expected and the results are inconclusive. I’ll then get another grant to study why my first study didn’t work, but I also include a study about snakes on treadmills. I’ll then parlay that into a study about snakes on trampolines…. Time to put that deposit on the new swimming pool.
So lemme get this straight, CAFE standards force auto makers to build larger trucks to stay in business and remain profitable and then when the larger trucks come with increased risk, the solution is more regulation and government interference? How about eliminate CAFE standards and let automakers make trucks the size people want and they will naturally decrease in size and height.
For a example this past Monday night about 8 pm Here in North Carolina I was traveling on I-40 and seen a guy wearing black cloths pushing a bicycle in the Middle of three lane interstate. I was in my Prius doing 65 MPH If I had not seen him on this foggy night It would not have mattered if I was driving a Truck or my Prius the outcome would have been the same. I'm saying this to say it's more about people than the trucks. On a different topic They need to look into these's new headlights on cars and trucks . It's true! I noticed in these new trucks you can barely see over the hood. Maybe the seats let up a little, idonno it's a customers truck and I don't mess with the seat. Bad design, and most people are not 6'4"! The hoods and fenders are more flat and from the driver's seat your line of sight is way out there. You can't see directly in front of you like the older trucks. No problems with my 2007 2-wheel drive GM truck. Trucks are getting big as well as wheels and tires are getting bigger! Adding those stupid aftermarket leveling kits makes it worse. What about thise Ford $5000 tail lights with a computer module inside. It's gettig ridiculous. And when these expensive trucks get older, won't be any parts!
NTSB and EPA are mostly responsible for the rising cost of vehicles . Life is inches and seconds between life and death. Some people dont make it to old age and we cant save everyone from themselves through regulations.
What if we made people with built in safety features problem solved! One of the biggest problems is that white line on the road it's just as important as the yellow. Some would argue it's more important. I currently don't have a big truck on the road in fact I walk, ride a bicycle and drive a compact car currently and I'm against them forcing them to make these trucks smaller, lighter and weaker. Humans have become the most over look part of the equation. I'm not against safety features but, there needs to be a balance. Also many of these so called safety features are way more dangerous than people realize.
Stay out of the damn street! Don’t let you kids play in traffic and stay off the damn road.
The factors are greater than size of pickups. Way more distracted drivers and pedestrians today for one. And hey what about EVs and how much more they weigh than there gas siblings.
Vehicles are getting just as distracting as smartphones. You need all the safety technology to counter the hugh touchscreens that take your eyes off the road. If youi could define the state of the world today, it's being connected. 24/7. It ain't going away.
How about people look both ways before they cross the street like we where taught as kids , I’ve had so many people just walk out in front of me just cause they got their heads up you know what
There are more cars and suv out on the road but most kill are trucks??? Assault rifle are dangerous and should be banned but most killing is committed using handgun?
That issue does suck. If there is an increase of accidents because of design. But there isn’t a week that goes by to where I myself have to do more defensive driving now a days. Lost count of people walking on a sidewalk. Music ear buds in AND AND on there phones while stepping onto the street and don’t even look before crossing. Another high risk issue because people just walk onto the road or run. Don’t look and can’t hear a vehicle coming. So how many of those issue happen and inflates these accidents. But bottom line is… Driver is responsible regardless. Again once a week I see this. Not over exaggerating. Drives me nuts
Maybe pedestrians need to start paying attention, stop walking around completely distracted and oblivious to the very obvious dangers around them on the streets. Staring at their phones. Headphones on. Depending on others for their safety. Pretty stupid stuff. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Stop walking in front of my lifted F-250 if you don’t want to get hit by it! Put your phone down and watch the pedestrian stop/go lights and you’ll be a lot safer.
Its just like the hole gun thing trucks and guns dont kill anyone people kill people if you no how to drive and you not a bum ass every thing will be ok
Trucks are too tall and even then people still want to raise up trucks even taller for no reason especially in a major city like Dallas. Yes people also are walking around roads with no understanding of side walks like the do not exist. I also feel people need to pay attention and stay off their phones. I still think trucks are too tall.
evs or not little and sometimes double the weight of their counter parts??????? seems if people were paying attention and not staring at phones while walking ? so many things factor in yet consequences aren't shared and finger pointing and opions are just more assumptions to a problem that can be fuzzy purposely!!!!!!!!!!!
I think trucks are becoming too fast. Especially with EV trucks. No need to go 0-60 in 5 seconds in a 7000 pound truck. If you wanna go fast you buy a sports car/motorcycle.
It’s the only way they sell. That’s why the manufacturers are so concerned on the 0-60 of an any EV. It’s the first thing they talk about then range and etc.
Shit. First it was guns running around murdering people, but now our trucks? What ever shall we do?! My truck beeps at me if someone is close to the front while moving. I think that kind of technology will do way more than redesigning the front of the vehicle.
Tell people to put down the dam phone
Pedestrians acting unintelligently are a big part of the issue. Stop walking and staring at your phone people.
You also could add acting unintelligently in general is the big part of the issue. Stop staring at your phone while driving.

Maybe pedestrians need to start paying attention, stop walking around completely distracted and oblivious to the very obvious dangers around them on the streets. Staring at their phones. Headphones on. Depending on others for their safety. Pretty stupid stuff. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.
0:58 easy for you to say😂
I still think trucks are too tall.
add the distractions from ev computer screens.
evs or not little and sometimes double the weight of their counter parts??????? seems if people were paying attention and not staring at phones while walking ? so many things factor in yet consequences aren't shared and finger pointing and opions are just more assumptions to a problem that can be fuzzy purposely!!!!!!!!!!!
Common sense look both ways when you cross a street they teach that in kindergarten 😂
It's not the pickup It's the person behind the wheel. Always has been.
Breaking news: Freight train swerved to avoid pedestrian practicing yoga on the railroad.
Trump will put a stop to all this nonsense
Hopefully with trump this doesn't pass
Just another thinly veiled attack on trucks.
I drive a semi for living every single day. I see people driving and playing on their phones and not paying attention.
Lack of Side walk is the biggest threat . Crazy that these new Development , sidewalk are not a priority and the infrastructure of roads are horrible
