    I’ve owned one of these since they came out and only sold mine last week! I like the crunch and OD settings. It made a nice amp for my family room to play with without pedals. It’s fun, but not a gigging amp. Fun amp though. Not a bad price point either!

    great video. The AV is not a hybrid. An hybrid amp is an amp that has either a tube preamp OR a tube power amp. The AV has BOTH, but at the end of the chain there is an additional solid state amp that only provides the power, no coloring. It's as if you miked an all tube amp like a Marshall DSL 1, and then you amplified the whole thing with a PA....that would not make the little Marshall a hybrid. The AV has a very small tube power amp, it would only provide about 1 watt without the additional power amp at the end of the chain. Exactly like, say, the Marshall 1 watt tube amps. Examples of hybrids are the Marshall Valvestate 100 w, the Fender Roc Pro. They only have a tube preamp. The old Peavey Classic has a tube power amp, but a solid state preamp. But the AV has both a tube preamp, and a tube power amp too, although the latter is very small. In so doing Vox can provide an all tube amp at a reduced cost, so it makes the amp more affordable. Otherwise the 30 w power amp at the end of the chain, if a tube one, would require a much more expensive design, because now you'd need at least four EL84 tubes, and a much more expensive power transformer and output transformer. A 1 watt output transformer costs way less than a 30 watts one. But with the Vox design it's impossible to tell the difference, so it all works very well. But anyways, the AV isn't a hybrid, it's a tube amp ( tube preamp + tube power amp) with an added solid state at the end of the chain, that is completely transparent (called a class D amp)

    It seems a lot of people are compering this amp to different kind of amps, with bigger speaker or way more expensive than this one.

    The comment about the lack of protection in front of the speaker is a very practical reminder. This adds "human" touch onto this demo video.

    I have the AV15. Love it!I get super sweet tones out of it, never cranked it though. So yes probably best suited to home use. The high gain settings are way too gainy for me. You can change the speed of delay and chorus by holding down the respective buttons while turning the knob btw... I actually find these amps very bassy cause of the speaker enclosure so backing off the bass gives em a lot more clarity. I'm a fan :) PS you should give your les paul the wrap over string treatment, totally changes the feel ;)

    I’ve had great luck with the ToneLabs and Valvetronix amps. It’s the only brand “modeling” amp I ever owned that did believable low and mid gain break up tube amp sounds, which is the area most of my guitar tones live. I didn’t find the higher gain sounds on these units to be as satisfying...oddly other manufacturers such as Line 6 seem to have done a better job with that...but then they didn’t have believable low/mid gain break up.
    I’ve not owned one of these AV series, but I’ve been curious about the AV 60 since it was introduced. Seems a decent and versatile amp for the money. I hope to see you review it soon.

      Just got my AV30 today and hooked it up to the original blue desktop tonelab I've had for many years, sheer heaven, I will be eliminating appx 10 amps, preamps and heads 😉 cleans are crystal and sound and feel better than all 4 of my tube amps, distorted channels on the amp depends on the guitar but sound great with any guitar through the tonelab, if your a vox man get this amp, hook it up to your tonelab and hopefully you'll find time to sleep, my favorite amp ever and I've had hundreds, combined with the tonelab it's incredible, hard to believe pure tube sound and feel can come from 2-12ax7's

    Kinda disappointing that it doesn't do the mid heavy AC 30 kinda thing that I associate with vox. As a wannabe jazz player, mid heavy cleans are kinda my thing. I'm leaning towards a vox av20x for a practice amp....mostlybecause of the Dumble clean model. Great video. Thanks for giving us your unbiased opinion of this amp.

    I have had the av30 for about a year and I love it. For gigging, it's always mic'ed anyways. I never use high gain though... But I think the cleans sound great. Takes pedals really well. This is with strats exclusively though... I don't use the effects

    I have an AV60 and the 12" speaker gives it way more punch to go with the extra watts. I use Clean 1 and OD 2 channels mostly. I agree the reverb is not great and usually have a TC HOF in the effects loop. I never worried about the speaker being almost flush with the front panel, but I have a padded cover for it when I play out. LEFTY cheers Shane! My PRS SE sounds killer on the OD2 channel.

    The 15-watter is on my short list of tiny, lightweight living room amps... I'm disappointed to hear that you weren't overly thrilled with the sound in the room; you got some great tones mic'd up. Which would you rather spend your hard earned cash on - the 8" 15-watt version of this, the Marshall DSL1CR, or the Blackstar HT1R combo (if you've tried it)?

      Get a Fender Super Champ x2! 15 watts hybrid tube/SS with digi effects. Cheap and only 22lbs with a line out for the PA if more volume is needed. This amp is good for home use and small gigs, with 15 watts it’s loud indeed! A bunch of amp settings too. I’ve had the Blackstar, a Mustang and a micro terror and the fender x2 rocks in comparison.

      @Jesús St James it does well with Effects Pedals but has built in Modulation, Reverb and Delay and I’ve found I don’t need them stand alone cause they’re built in and sound Great. It will take Overdrive and Distortion Pedals also but again there are so many of them built in I don’t use them, and they also sound Great although I do use a Boost Pedal just to stand out during a Solo. I’ve never had this problem but some say they can’t get a Clean sound from it. As I said I’ve NEVER had this problem so my guess is they’re running the Clean Gain higher than the Master Output which on any Amp will cause it to break up. I truly Love the 60w version. When tested them out before purchase the 60w had more Clean Head Room that’s why I got it over the 30w. Hope this helps. Have a Good Day man!

    It sounded okay I guess from what I just heard in the video. I've had a few Vox amps over the years the only one I really like is the ac30. But it's loud and heavy not too many places I could use it. And then there was a Vox Pathfinder 10 or 15 with Reverb that was pretty good but they stopped making it.

    It doesnt sound bad .. but if its only got a oddly voiced 10" speaker in it ... moving to a heavier larger one might change how the amp sounds. Again one thing I notice with alot of these companies is they miss the mark by not making head versions of these amps. You'd think it would be easier for them & cost less especially in the solid state ones.

    Hard to make a decision but I normally go with the worst sounding demo it's probably the honest one. Some big shots did a demo of this and had it sounding like the best amp in the world. I guess they did some tricks. I look for demos with the guy in his bedroom with low production. You get a better sense of what it really sounds like. I better make it clear Shane I like your demos. The reason I don't watch Andertons is their post production on the audio over-sells the reality of their reviews. The same thing happened with the Mustang GT-200. That was a clear case of post production trying to make that junk sound better than it did.

      I agree, I don't think the Peavey will be able to keep up with the Blackstar ID 60 TVP, and the ID 260 TVP would crush it for sure, the main reason being there is no need for any pedals with these, sounds great and are pretty darn loud.

    BTW Shane, I don't think all of the vox's have speaker jacks - pretty sure the AVT's don't have them. Vox make some really good sounding tube, hybrids or solid state amp. But damn they make some pretty ugly looking amps! I also have to question who designs the layouts of these - I mean all the controls are on top except for the power switch - the most useful control. And lets put a foot switch connector on top, instead of on the back with other misc connections to not clutter the front panel. I didn't mind the clean tones on it though.

    It does have great tone but its a ten inch driver so the the bottom end is a little airy ...not as full. I think with gain being set right an closed back cab for more directed bass to emulate 12 inch driver is what they were trying for ...the price point is realy good on these right now but im a " if it isnt broke dont fix it " guy stick with your peavey's...but if i had. A couple hundred bucks to blow i would by one swap out 10".... an put a 12 " in... there ....as usual nice playing shane ...good guitar choices with the amp Tom Petty played Dano guitar like yours in recording american girl album but on ac15...then used Richenbacher...on his tour

      I think the answer to my question is that, if they put a 12" speaker, few people would see any reason to get the 60W model. 30WRMS with a 12" is good enough for most scenarios, so why bother with more watts? Now they give you a reason to set your sights on the 60W model. Personally I refuse to fall for this ruse.

      GI D that's a good answer and seems like the right answer. If that's true what does that say. that they're counting on us to be suckers. How about the katana artist when did they design that. Before they launch the original. They're all marketing scammers.

    Im convinced a lot has to do with name brand recognition. I have both the AV60 & peavey delta blues, I can almost get the same clean sound from the vox that the peavey has. P.S. The 2nd crunch channel is meant to get the same vibe as the top boost in a classic ac30, if you read the manual, switch to it, turn down the gain & it will be comparable to the ac30 vs peavey delta blues video of yours.
    Edit:
    Yeah the reverb is pretty lame on it though & the high gain voicings are pretty much mediocre at best

    Hey Shane I really enjoyed this demo and your channel in general! I was wondering if you have ever played on an Epiphone Firefly DSP 30 amp and if so what you think of it. I recently picked one up and it's my first solid state amp, which made me nervous but the clean tone is great. Thanks for all the great content!

    Is it vacuum tube output ... eg 2 x EL34 pentodes ?

  • @formercakid

    If your not getting the the best out of the amp you don't have it set right. The switches on the amp are crucial to getting the optimum tone. If there not set right the amp will sound bad per the selection you are using.

      Problem with reviewers, is they just don’t spend enough time with a product. I have amps and pedals I came back to months and years later and got much better tones than I initially did. Some gear has to grow on you over time as you learn it’s eccentricities

    Watching the 1080p50 stream - something sounds off, not sure what. 48KHz audio playing back at 44.1KHz perhaps? Enjoyed the video review anyway.

      I watched the stream back for a few minutes before and it was fine. Weird! I had a husky voice going on but its as I was hearing it. I don't stream in 50p either just in 25. Not sure what you're watching it on but that's weird. :-)

    @intheblues If you were looking for a solid state amp for practice, do you think this guy or a Boss Katana is a better option to go with. I know the Katana has more features, but based on tone and feel, which one would you pick?

  • @hoosierdaddy2308

    Sounds great.
    You always do great reviews. Always good. I would lime to see you do a review of the quilter Mono block pedal size amp if you've not done so. SS amp, made in the US, supposed to feel just like a tube amp.
    I had a larger older model hybrid from Vox. It sounded great like this one, but would suddenly just die. I had the foot controller and amp. I hated that because it sounded great. It had more effects.

    I was hoping this amp would sound better - I was thinking of getting one, but now I'm definitely thinking twice as it didn't sound as nice as my Vox VT20+ 😞. As Thunderkiss 65 is one song I can actually play, and it sounded less than amazing through the AV30, I don't think this is the right amp for me 😂

  • @BlackChanal
    @BlackChanal 5 років тому +2

    Okay so its not me and this amp just sounds bad on everything that isnt clean
    I always wondered if its me, i have this amp for 2 years now and wondered if its my strings, my pickups, my cable, my amp setting or what not, its simply the amp lol.
    Needless to say i only play metal, so this amp wasnt the best, but i never had much clue about the technique behind the music, i just wanted to play

    • @jefffree6990
      @jefffree6990 4 роки тому

      yes - sounds muffled for sure, or "scooped" as he put it ... maybe its just the speaker, which is in a sealed cab.... have you tried an external speaker?

  • @VintageSG
    @VintageSG 6 років тому +1

    The speaker on these amps is front mounted, so yes, you can feel the gasket ring. Seems an odd design decision.
    There's shenanigans with the power ratings too. Head over to the Vox website and have a look. The AV30 is listed as a maximum 30W RMS, the AV60 as maximum 60W RMS, with 27 and 36 Watts power consumption respectively.
    Is it 30W maximum?, 30W RMS?, 30W figure pulled out of the air?.
    How is it being measured, and by what creative twist is a 27 Watt power consumption amp capable of 30 Watts RMS, let alone a 36 Watt consuming amp being a 60 Watt RMS amp.
    Shenanigans!.
    Nice looking amps though, I'll grant them that.

    @DMSProduktions 6 років тому +5

    Ok, MY 2c!
    Not a BAD amp, I've heard worse hybrid/modelling amps before.
    But having a 1x1 valves in/out stage you'd THINK it would sparkle a bit more.
    NEITHER of those clean channels were classic VOX chime/jangle, which is WHAT 1 would expect from a Vox amp! (A clean Vox is hard to beat really!)
    The OD's were ok and the higher gains were passable, OD1 was particularly good as it was more 'Marshallesque' shall we say, whereas the 2 crunches were more youre typical, ratty sounding Vox crunch! The metals were flubby!
    Now, as to how this could sound better, 1, do you know WHAT speaker it is packing? And I would suggest you do a pt.2 and run it thru a better external speaker! It may make a lot of difference.
    2. The other suggestion, is I saw the closeup of the valves, it's got Rubys in it. NOT a top grade valve. I dare say this amp, would perform BETTER , with a better grade of valves like JJ's or Sovteks, and a LOW gain grade, say 12AT7 or 12AU7. As they have less gain, they will clip better and possibly produce better overtones and harmonics!
    BUT, like anything like this, it's built to a budget!
    Good demo Shane!

    It ain’t no AC 30, I’m sure VOX is not trying to put it in the same category as there flagship amp
    But is seems to be a budget model of the Valvetronics line. Your Marshall is far better

    Great review on yet another meh amp that others praised like it was the Second Coming...thanks for your unbiased and straight to the point reviews! Seems that every time I think I might be convinced to make the leap to a modelling amp, I keep coming to the same conclusion: Kemper is way too expensive, and (so far) pretty much everything else falls short. Still gotta check out the Boss Katana Artist...high hopes!

      @@youtubewatcher3467 Yes, it will. It takes distortion/overdrive pedals very well. My main amp is an AC30; and the AV30, while not as toneful and touch-sensitive, is still a very good amp for the price. Unfortunately, it has been discontinued. ☹️😔

    Tried this amp at my local music store, and for the life of me could not dial in a decent tone besides a dirty blues tone that was just ok, other than that i couldn't get this amp to do anything other than dirty to muddy blues
