I love that you leave stones with positive messages for people to find. What a beautiful gift. Thank you for sharing.
If you have bubbles, you can fill with vinyl spackle, like you would use for filling nail holes, or for dry wall. Dries fast, sands very easy and smooth. While your getting your cement, pick up a small tub at your LOWES or Home Depot. 😊 This was a very good tutorial!
If you have bubbles - you shouldnt;. Don't over mix and make sure its not to thick. I have yet to have any bubbles after making LOTS of them
Thank you for sharing. You can have a spray bottle with water with a little soap in it and spray your molds ahead of time to help with bubbles. Also, recommend that you invest in a large silicone bowl to mix your cement as very easy to clean up. 👍
Interesting, it never occurred to me I could make my own stones. I'm lucky enough to be driving distance from a particular beach that has loads of super smooth oval stones, so I just load up on those. You do outstanding work.

FYI, you can fill the holes with wood filler. Works great
Find your exact measure for each mold by pouring water into the mold then pour the water into a measuring cup. This is your liquid measurement for volume. Do the math according to the products directions to produce for less waste.
Great tutorial! I wish I'd seen it before I had figured out on my own how to use the Rapid Set Cement. I use an Oxo plastic bowl with a spout on it and do 4 cups of cement all at once. I glove up one hand and mix it by hand - squishing out the lumps. Then pour in 4 or 5 molds. I also spray the insides of the molds with a mixture of dish soap (a few drops) and water before pouring the cement. It seems to help with the bubbles (it's hard to tap the bubbles with my one ungloved hand!)

Loved your video, I just got my molds from HDC and had always seen Ultracal 30 as what was used, but this seems like such a better alternative. Patience is not one of my virtues and when I saw you use the Rapid Set Cement All all of a sudden I got so giddy! I watched this last night first actually, and went and got the Cement All today due to your video. Thank you for your share of the ratio. Again, seems way easier than having to do the 38:100 ratio of UC30. I plan on doing my first ever molds tomorrow with both the HDC molds and your recommendation for RSCA. Thus far, I've been buying Mexican Beach Pebbles, so I am really excited to get some bigger more uniform stones to work with. I have a serious rock addiction, not even attempting rehab. And I getting my fix faster....I'm all about it! Thanks!
Hi Lauren, You are so welcome! Rapid Set is such a time saver and the ultimate thrill for us impatient and addicted dotters. 😁 All of my stones are made with the RSCA and most are made with HDC molds. I will never suggest rehab, this is one addiction I’m full on supporting. Let me know how your stones come out, and if you have any questions. ✨
How is the surface to work on? I didn't like ultracal or another cement. I've been using an artist plaster that is soooo smooth that is really lovely to work on but not super available. There are home Depots everywhere. If the finish is smooth and not at all gritty that would be a good alternative. I do resin my work usually, but I tell people if it's not a natural stone then I recommend that it stay indoors. With a cement I wouldn't have to worry about it.

I used ultracal at first, but the cost was prohibitive. If you want smooth, you won't be sorry 😊👍✨

I fill in any pits with wall spakle (filler). It dries fast and smoothes over with a light sanding. Paint covers any color difference. Sanding the backs smooth is my favorite, but I've had recent fun with pouring resin in the well.

Looks like a number 2 mold from Happy Dotting company. My favorite as well! Thanks for the video, I usually use ultracal 30 but I’ll try this. I let the left over dry in the bottoM and pop it out for practice

I think you'll find this very easy to use and the results are great. I used UltraCal at first, and yeah, $$ and it was hard to find locally.
As for drying/painting time, it depends on the humidity and your environment. I make my stones way ahead, but I'd say at least 3 days. It'll turn very light in color. I recommend putting it on a paper towel. Check the paper towel for dampness and take note of the weight. Wet will be heavier than when it's dry.
About 3-4 days, give or take.

Bubbles = over mixing, mixture is to thick or both. I life mine about 2 inches form surface and let them drop to get air bubbles out also. 45 minutes and they can come out of mold

Thanks for the great tutorial. Now I feel much more comfortable with my first stones. I wondered about using other molds. Some of the other silicone molds have very negative reviews. I purchased my round stone from the Dot store on Amazon and didn't get that round thing to set the mold in. I wonder abut the stuff you sprayed on the inside of the Dot mold. Did you use that on the other molds too? On the natural stones I have i used some rubber stamps, which was lots of fun. Not real easy, best to use the acrylic paint than stamp ink. It does not move around the curve of the rock as much when using the paint. I am looking forward to this adventure. Thanks for making it easier.

You can use just about any type of mold with a sturdy base so it sets evenly. I don't spray anything in my molds. After using it, I wipe the dust away and rinse with clean water outdoors... never down the drain!
I've done a couple of stones with rubber stamps, not much in the way of dots on them, but I enjoyed doing them. There's 2 in this video, ua-cam.com/video/mjFsnv3m4Qc/v-deo.html both done with the same stamp.

I like that we can use other mediums to make rocks, I have tried Portland cement mixed with sand and I tried grout. They both work but I have to base coat all of these diy rocks because they are kind of powdery. Also you have to put extra coats of sealer on them. The diy rocks soak up the paint real fast. I sprayed a coat of sealer on one I painted and the painted areas gave me a gloss finish but the rock just sucked up the sealer where it wasn’t painted. Any advice you can give would be helpful
Hi LaVana, I'm sorry you are having such a difficult time with your paint absorbing into your rocks.
I only use the Rapid Set Cement All. I don't have to pre-seal, and a single base coat of a good acrylic ( DecoArt, Folk Art, etc.) work well with one coat. Thinner paint like Apple Barrel or Anita's usually require a couple of coats, but they are fine.
The more translucent specialty paints like some Folk Art Metallics and Pearls will most often require a solid base coat of a similar color first, with the desired color on top. I don't have any issues with any of these with the Rapid Set Cement All.
The powdery nature of the sand and/or grout is an issue because they naturally absorb. Definitely stay away from Plaster of Paris, it does have its uses, but it's too brittle for stones and will also absorb.

J'adore le ciment, c'est pas cher et j'ai des cailloux quand j'en ai besoin. Je passe habituellement quelques heures et j'en sors environ une douzaine de différentes tailles. Il se solidifie assez rapidement pour que lorsque j'ai fini de remplir tous mes moules, je puisse commencer à démouler le premier lot... environ 45-60 minutes. Bien sûr, ils doivent sécher plusieurs jours après.

Thanks for this. I live regionally and can't get Ultracal 30. I find the mix I am using isn't working out. I will definitely give this a try. I have started using MDF 3mm board shapes. At least my projects will be cheaped to mail.
I just found out that the Bastians quik set cement is cheap here at 20kg for $7.69 which is about a third of the cost of my first mixture thats not working. so I am happy with this.

Hi Karen, The colored stones had been base coated with regular acrylic paint, in preparation for a project. I wanted to show how smooth and beautifully the stones made with the Rapid set cement takes on paint. (That was my first video, and I guess I should have mentioned that, but I was so nervous, lol!!)

Yes, they're concrete and very durable!! I always mix the correct proportions, extra water could make them weak.
I dropped one that bounced off of an iron park bench, rolled down a rocky path to an ocean jetty, where it settled between some large boulders! 😃 Not a speck of damage.

I love what you're doing. I want to make succulent pots. Can you tell me what paint you use?
Hi Tammy, Thank you 💕 I love doing it!! As for the paint… I use all types. For regular acrylics, I use mostly DecoArt Americana or Delta Ceramcoat. I have a few Apple Barrel, but I don’t rely on them for very much. In Specialty paints, such as multi-surface, metallics, enamels, Glitter paint, etc. I love Folk Art!! They have the most beautiful metallics and Pearls and great coverage. I’ve also had some good luck with Michael’s multi-surface ‘craft smart’ brand.
Most multi surface paint can be baked after air curing, which makes them washable. Different brands have different instructions, so read the labels and follow exactly.
Aside from the multi surface or Patio paints, you’ll want to consider a drainage hole and seal your pots so the moisture doesn’t cause the paint to peel. Also, allow plenty of drying/curing time!! Many years ago, I painted some terracotta pots in basic acrylics and pre-sealed it inside and out with an acrylic varnish. I still have those pots, with plants and they look great, but they’re never outdoors.

Hi Maria, thank you for watching and for the nice compliment. Yes! You can use silicone cake molds, candy molds or anything silicone for that matter. I've also used plastic containers, cups, ice cube trays, etc., but they are usually destroyed after one use 😅
BUT, please understand that once you use the silicone mold, (or anything) for anything other than food, it's NO LONGER SAFE to use for food.
You can certainly make some interesting pieces! 😊✨
oops, one more thing..i read that coating the inside of the mold with a little wet cement first helps reduce bubbles on the sides or upper lip..will try that soon.
I was going to say that if I didn't see it in the replies. I would suggest putting about a tablespoon of concrete in and tipping it all around to get it to flow and cover the entire inner surface. The idea is similar to slip coating molds with clay projects.
I've seen it done for table tops poured into melamine molds where they pour a small amount and use a chip brush to paint the concrete into the corners and up the sides of the form. Then they pour a different batch of concrete using fiberglass reinforcing strands to strengthen the table. TMI but the idea of applying a small amount first is fairly well established.
Wow, so glad I stumbled upon this video, thank you so much!! I've noticed you mix one small batch at a time. When I was using UltraCal I would mix up a whole batch and be able to do several pours from it. Do you think this Cement All would get too thick if trying to pour quantities? Again, thanks!!

I don’t mix larger batches because I’m not strong enough, lol!
In the video, I did 1 cup because it was easier and it was my first real video.
I have done 2 cups and as long as you have your molds ready to pour, you could mix as much as you want/can at a time.
If I still have some mix ready, but not enough for a mold, I’ll either pour a shallow stone, or I’ll add proportionately enough mix and water to pour a full stone.
Try increasing to a double batch and see how it goes for you, then increase as much as you are comfortable with. If you have to, add just a DROP of water to loosen it up. Cement All is denser than ultraCal so it’s a little harder to mix, but it’s a lot cheaper and my stones are exactly the same as the UltraCal ones. 🥰✨

Hi Mariana, The rapid set cement stones will be a very light grayish/beige when completely dried. To get a pure white, or any color, you have to base coat it ✨
@@ArtbyRMalloy Great video! Love the way you painted the stones, beautiful! I make soap dishes and candle holders and started putting about 1 tablespoon of Titanium Dioxide in 1 cup of cemental and it does a great job of whitening them up. It does thicken up the cement though so you need to add a bit more water.
Thank you! I've never experimented with additives, so that's good to know! I do have some color pigment and pure mica powders. And since rapid set is easy to adjust, I'll have to try mixing some in! ✨✨

It depends, if you're in a dry zone, the water will evaporate quicker and your stones will be ready in a couple of days. I usually remove mine from the mold within an hour or two after pouring. They're quite dark, a lot of water is still inside, but you'll quickly see them lightening up. I find they dry and cure quicker because the mold holds the moisture in.
Within a few hours, you'll see them getting lighter in color as they dry. You can place them near a dehumidifier, a sunny window or outside if you're climate allows. But, give them at least a couple of days.
Tip: Place them on a paper towel and note the dampness. When the paper towel is dry, you'll know there's little to no moisture left, and you should be good to go. When in doubt, don't.
I always make several ahead, so they're well dried by the time I'm ready to use them.
I'm happy you're excited to get started, so while waiting, you can practice on an old dinner plate, or the white plastic ones from Dollar tree, or a piece of tile!

NICE!! I have several different molds, but I gravitate towards 2, sometimes a third. I still have the other stones made, but I have to replace the two I use most. My best advice to a you and all newcomers is Don't spend a lot of money on all sorts of tools and molds right off the bat. Seriously, I have so many sets of tools ($$), but I use the same few. Some of my favorites are from the Dollar Tree! 😃
I didn't start dotting until shortly before I retired, just before COVID. You have a head start! 😉
Most importantly, enjoy and don't stress. It's all about what makes you happy. ❤️

🤔... I've mixed color (mica as well as acrylic) into my cement with varying degrees of satisfaction. And, I've dusted my resin molds with mica and had great results, but it's not occured to me to try dusting molds for cement! I've always base coated everything prior to painting, but this could be very interesting. 💕
I have lots of mica, so I'll give it a go for sure!! 👍👏
About how many of the size rocks you showed in this video can you make with that box of cement your using?
Hi Michelle, I made several sizes of stones in the video, so I can’t give you a plausible answer. I can say I get several stone making sessions out of a 25 lb box, which is currently (08/2022) under $18 @ Home Depot. Each session produces approximately 10-12 stones of varying sizes.

I’ve been looking for days for the ratio of water to cement. THANK you! 🙂. I can’t find the rapid set cement where I’m at but have some quikrete cement mix. It seems like the same thing?

I think the ratios will be close if not the same. Quikrete may set up faster than rapid set, so I would start with a small batch and test with one mold to see how it reacts. Let me know how you make out!! Good luck!
@@ArtbyRMalloy I’m so glad I found you too. I tried it this afternoon and had to add almost double the water. I am going to keep experimenting though 🙂. I’m going to try another batch with plaster of Paris and the cement mix. Will let you know about that one later on

@@ArtbyRMalloy thanks for the warning. I tried first batch with half cement half plaster of Paris but it was hardening before I even poured half the first mold. I just did another and did 1 1/2 cups of cement with 1/4 cup plaster of Paris and 3/4 cup water. Thickened up pretty fast again but I was able to finish pouring before it got too thick. I’m having fun anyway 😁. By the time I do get my real mold I might have it down pat lol. (I’ve been using silicon pinch cups)
@@ArtbyRMalloy Quikrete and Cement All are not the same. Quikrete will have large chunks of aggregate (like rocks) in it. It is heavier and not naturally smooth in finish unless you vibrate and add more water. Concrete and cement aren't that same because of what is in them, just fyi. You can still get the job done but the technique will be different.
What type of paint did you use, it's so shiny and glitery
Hi Leonie, I use all brands of paints. I'm partial to FolkArt and DecoArt for the Pearl and Metallic ones. I also use Rust-Oleum Clear Gloss, Semi gloss or Matte spray sealer. Much easier than resin, which I've also used at times. Depends on the finished look you're going for.

Hi Judy, I give 2 coats of Rustoleum 2X Ultra Cover spray sealer. They have Semi-Gloss Clear, Matte or Gloss finish. Depending on the type of paint I use, Chalk - Semi-Gloss or Matte, or Gloss for a high shine. I personally prefer the Matte or Semi-Gloss… my husband wants everything Glossy.
You can also use a thin coat of epoxy resin. Follow the directions for your product, they are not all the same.
I have tested UV resin, however I suggest you test it yourself. UV resin is quick setting once exposed to UV lamp or Sunlight, so getting a good even coating, without drips can be tricky. It’s okay for flat surfaces, but I much prefer the Rustoleum.

That video was when I was just learning myself, and I was super happy to just have a good working process to offer, even if it was pretty awful! 😂 I'm much better now and probably should make another, more streamlined video... someday 😉😅 😘✨
Thanks for your video. I just got my stone molds and need to decide what cement/mortar mix to use. Have you used Rapid Set Mortar Mix for art stones? If so, what do you think are the pros and cons of each mix? I want to use one that is good for placing stones outside in flower beds and that maybe has a more greyish stone-like color when dry rather than white. Any advice for me please?

I have not tried mortar mix. Not for any reason other than the Rapid Set Cement is what I tried and works great for me 🙂 They are beautifully smooth out of the molds and being cement, they are perfect for outdoors. Mine aren’t white, they are more on the grayish side. I live in a 4 season state, and don’t worry about them holding up outside, BUT I will tell you to be diligent with sealing before putting out in the elements. I have a few that stay outside year round without issue. I use DupliColor clear spray, from the auto store (auto zone, pep boys…) for coasters and such that will take direct heat, like hot coffee cup. Otherwise, I generally use Rustoleum clear, and be sure to seal the bottom, too. I hope this helps ✨

Hi, For the Rapid Set Cement All, it's 4 parts cement to 1 part water. So, 1 cup cement to 1/4 cup water.

You could, but plaster is brittle and could easily break.
I just bought some molds and made 8 of them today. How long do I have to wait before I can paint them? One week?
Hi Monica, it depends on the size and thickness of the mold, what you are using to make the stone and humidity.
In normal conditions (weather, environment) I’d suggest about a week. However, if you live in a warm, dry climate, you might be okay with 3-5 days. Leave the very bottom unpainted as long as possible, so moisture can continue to evaporate before sealing. If you’re really pressed for time… ⚠️ you could try putting the unpainted stone in a warm oven, 200* for an hour or so to speed up drying. Be careful, allow to cool before removing, so you don’t burn yourself!! ⚠️

@@ArtbyRMalloy Technical note: Concrete cures, hardens, and strengthens by a chemical reaction with water. Drying it out prematurely halts the curing process. Technically once it sets, it should be kept under water for 7 days, but nobody does that - it's really inconvenient. In your case, keeping it in the mold would do much the same as putting it under water. Plus with your projects, getting the maximum strength for a decorative rock is overkill. But the point is, you might not want to force the concrete to dry faster than is natural.
As for painting, you can paint it immediately coming out of the mold while it is still damp. There's a style of painting on wet plaster called fresco. It has been used for thousands of years. If you do paint it right away, you would tend to seal the moisture in the project allowing it to come to full strength without curing it under water.

Not sure what I’m doing wrong. I’m mixing the correct ratio and when I try to demold the casting just crumbles like it’s made of compressed sand. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong
Can you tell me exactly what you are doing? Is it Rapid Set Cement, like I use? How much are you mixing at a time? Is it mixed well, to the consistency of soft ice cream or something similar?

I’m not sure what the problem is… 1 cup of cement added to 1/4 cup of water is right. Because it’s a Rapid Set, the consistency when pouring will depend on how long it sits before pouring it into the mold. As you can see in my video, it gets thick fairly quick. Also, don’t add anything to it, like plaster of paris or colorants. For curiosity sake, I’d also try curing some in a paper or plastic cup and see how that sets up overnight.
If you’re still not getting results, I’d suggest talking to someone where you bought the mix and see what they say.
Can I add mica powder to the cement?
I paint my stones, so I don't do much experimenting with alternative processes. However, I do know you can, but there's ratios of colorant to cement, that need to be adhered to in order to not compromise the integrity of the cement. I think it's somewhere in the limits of 10% colorant to 90% range, and probably need to adjust the water, too.
I'm sorry I'm not able to give you a definitive answer, but I don't want to steer you wrong.

Hi Myra. What do you mean silicone jar? I've never seen one. I would love to find a silicone bowl with pouring spout... but haven't seen that either. I want to start making my own stones next month. I live in an apt... so I need to find ways to make the least mess possible... lol!
@@mycreativeheart4159 I found a 2-cup silicone measuring cup at a specialty kitchen supply store. It would work perfectly for mixing small batches of concrete. It turns out that a flexible measuring cup is better for pouring out of than it is for measuring (flexible sides change the volume when you pick it up).
@@dchall8 thank you. I found a 2 cup silicon measuring cup too.... and thought the same when I held it... so I didn't buy it. I did find a video of using a large Ziploc bag to mix the cement in... and then cutting off a corner to "pipe" your cement into the molds. Much less mess and easy clean up. Much better working option for me in an apartment. Yes... it's less "eco-friendly" though. Thanks for your reply!❤️

A face mask should be worn any time you are using cement powder. That powder can enter your airway and harden.

💯 Yes, Proper safety equipment, such as face masks, gloves, fans, good ventilation, etc. is essential for your health when crafting.
There are many types of masks and filters, some are good for particles (like dust, cement powder, etc) while others are required for fumes and chemicals. Please investigate which is recommended for your needs.
I have a half face (fitted) mask, with replaceable canisters for resin, spray painting, etc. I use regular, fitted face masks when working with particle/solid types of materials such as cement, sanding, etc.

Hi Rosario, I'm sorry you aren't able to get it at your home Depot, but is it possible for them to order it? If not, ask them or your local hardware store what would be comparable.
UltraCal is a great alternative. For me it's expensive, but it may be less expensive in your area. Don't use Plaster of Paris, it'll work, but it's brittle and I don't recommend it.

I’m sorry, I don’t know either. I’m in the USA, I get it at Home Depot and I believe Walmart also sells it. Check with your local home improvement center professional, hopefully they can suggest an equivalent. ✨
