MASSIVE Callus on This Rose Plant Air Layer | Could it be the Rooting Hormone?

  • So this one didn't turn out like I wanted it to but I got some massive callus on this rose plant air layer. Pretty interesting stuff if you ask me. The only thing I'm wondering is if it was caused by the rooting hormone.

    Growing tips/buds produce some auxin [IAA], so unlike cuttings you really don't need too much external auxin [IBA or NAA] on an air layers; with the possible exception of those set during the dormant season as there are no growing tips.
    The IAA tends to inhibit the growth of lower buds as it moves to the roots which is why removing the tip allows side buds to grow. Cytokinins are produced by root tips and move up stimulating bud growth/counteracting the IAA inhibition.
    In this way the plant can self regulate to increase canopy growth when roots are healthy, or stimulate root growth when the tops are healthy and undamaged; depending on the auxin:cytokinin balance. (An intermediate balance with the right total concentration promotes callus tissues in vitro, but that is a matter of more concern to micopropagation in a lab.)

    Hi Mike, I have done quite a bit of layering and have had mixed success, I never use hormone on roses, roses produce their own hormone and typically do well without commercial hormone added, and (like you) I score the bark, but don't girdle the plant by removing it all. Anyhow great video and I like watching your ideas, keep it up! All the best and Good propagation Wayne

    i have been playing with my plants and some plants in the woods.. found a cool horse chestnut tree growing out in the woods that i am trying to air layer off, but it has not gotten roots yet... going to insolate it over the winter and check back with it in spring. my rodey has about 8-9 low branches that i have ground layering some are rooted in some are newly grounded this year. i also have 3 crimson dwarf azalea cuttings in my house in glasses of water one is well on its way, almost 2 inch roots the other 2 are a bit behind still alive but not much root.. I have a lot of different maple seeds that i am going to refrigerate over the winter (wet) of course... from small leaved uprights to big leaved ( october glory) giant red maple seeds also picked up some full moon and other great maple seeds. I put some of all kinds in my little green house in soil as some what of a controlled test...and last i have about 1000 Korean fur seeds to try to grow, not sure how but trying a few tricks.. fire, scrapping and refrigeration wish me luck....

    Blueberries are one of the few things I miss about Pennsylvania swamps. We would filled two 3 gallon buckets each in no time, then go swimming and fishing. The old bear would tip-toe in to help himself, but they were his berries, no? Down here at home, no matter what we get, wear gloves and use tongs! :) The 'pears will survive, but the pigs may not. Got much of the garden caged and am getting a ton of tomatoes on, at last. No kumquats because the quail got mad and ate them all, then got your friends, the javelinas to ravage the thornless prickly pears. Haw', nieto! Keep up the good work!

    Probably the hormone. I saw another video where a guy did an experiment propagating pothos with and without the hormone. The roots that grew from the hormone were more numerous and thicker than the water ones, but over time the water roots proved healthier. Once planted, the plain water ones continued to be healthier.
    I'm going to avoid root hormone as much as possible now based on these two videos.

    They don't sell the pods alone, only in kits, but I don't want the extra stuff as I have plenty of fillings and rooting hormone. I just want bulk pods with some extra foam bits in a shipping box.
    (I also think they could have cut their startup injection mold tooling costs by changing/removing the molded text, all those crannies need hand polishing. @@MikeKincaid79 anytime I had seen something like this on a plant it was some sort of nematode that caused it. And I'm not going to pretend to know names in Latin. All of the fancy stuff but I've got a knack for gardening that I got from my great grandma and passed down and I don't even have to know the names of things I can just kind of tell what kind of soil they want that kind of thing. I guess a natural? I'm going to be moving way up high on a mountain so I'm going to learn new things about plants I guess. Pretty woodsy though and I'm in a state that I didn't think had Poison Ivy's Oaks but we have one of them and I guess it really doesn't matter which one it does the same thing right! It turned the most gorgeous red on one leave the big one. The mountains already getting snow I think so we're going to have to move to the place after the thaw but I'm excited. There were so many thistles though they were at least 15 feet high and they were so matted together that you couldn't get through them you had to go around them and they're right where I want to Garden I wanted to bring goats and so bad. But it wasn't our property yet. It's a rare when I want to go in a place and scrub it with a brush and mops and all that LOL. 20 acres of oh my God! Including a hill that I'm going to try to make into a stair Garden which fruit trees towards the bottom so that I can pick them from the top easy sitting on one of the ledges. It's going to depend on how steep it is I don't want to take out too many trees I didn't come there to clear the land. There is gorgeous little plants that people had thrown around and some plants that I really wish I could identify but can't find anywhere. Anyway anything I've seen that looks like that had a nematode when I took it into some place and it was some sort of root knot. I don't know enough about this to speak on it. I just know that I had some roses that somebody gave me and they were getting roots on them and then it came out and they were gone I should have probably put them in dirt sooner but they were just tiny little roots. I put them in with pieces of willow tree and they rooted like crazy and it seemed to help. I've been awake all night thinking about my house I'm a little bit wired. Thank you! I have four floors in this big mass of house that has no electricity it's got to have solar panels luckily I've got wood stoves cuz he took the cook stove and lest and left three giant vehicles on a place that is literally like a goat Trail it's very hard to turn Corners you can't have trailers or anyting they don't make the corners. Once you get up there it's great getting up there's different. It definitely makes it pucker a little bit my jaw hurt and my neck and my back and everything by the time we got up there but then I relaxed. And then my toe went right in the big pile of bear stuff that was pretty new and he'd been eating all the apples on the most beautiful apple tree not a hint of disease and it's been alone for quite a while I guess there's nothing up there to disease it but I did find a cottonwood bent over that had that rust on it lumps of rust. So hopefully the snow will keep it where it's at and then when I get up there I'm going to have to cut it and burn it right away! And hope that that gets any of that out of there I don't want that on my fruit tree it was a most beautiful apples in the most beautiful leaves I've seen in years and it's an older tree that farm was a couple hundred years old and they built the house in the 70s out of the wood from the farm or stories of oh my God! and we found the 4th floor through a secret door which is really exciting that used to grow plants under lights but they weren't roses LOL not my thing so I'll just be starting my garden plants down there or maybe not at all there I don't know where I'll be starting on but I don't have a green house yet so probably there my garden will be tremendously big for me at my age and my health. But I bet to my house gets about 80% better when I get there and it's mine and there's nobody to bug me. Thank you for letting me vent. UA-cam is the only place I get to do this I have no family left so this is it. I need some polytunnels like you have but I'm really afraid of what the Bears are going to do to them and I want to plant berries everywhere but what are the Bears going to do to them. There's no law up there so I can build anything I want and I can put up electrical thing so I don't want to hurt them but if there's little zappers everywhere they'll get the idea it's not a fun place to play Maybe? sorry this was really long over lumps on a rose cutting

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  Рік тому +1

      It's just a large clump of tissue where there was a wound on the plant. It's a disorganized clumping of cells as the plant tries to heal itself and eventually for roots.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +2

      You will get an exact clone of the parent plant when you take cuttings. Grafting roses just puts that specific rose genetic on top of a stronger, more disease resistant root stock. Many will grow well on their own roots though.

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому +1

      I plan to do hydrangea next spring. They root much easier early on in the spring/summer. For hydrangea, I will probably just score the stem and then put the pods on. That video will have to wait until next year though....................................................Unless............................I bring one of the hydrangea indoor and grow it through the winter. Mike does air layering work during winter? Can I do it now and let it sit over winter into spring? Rhododendron, butterfly bush

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 роки тому

      Yes, it does but I don't have as much experience with winter air layering so I'm learning with you. I'm getting a late start but am considering doing some rhododendrons right now. I have a feeling that nothing would really happen until next spring though. The downside to air layering in the fall is that the cold weather won't allow for much root growth, if any at all. My thought is that it would very slowly build callus through the winter and prepare itself to burst out with root growth come spring but that's just a theory.

      These pods are somewhat transparent so you can see the roots with your eyes, the camera has a tough time picking them up. I've been in contact with Ben, the creator of these, and he said he is definitely going to make a bigger one but it will take some time cause he's a one man show in his barn with 1 mold. He'll have to fork over the money to create a bigger mold. Looking forward to it.
