One thing that Tim gets slightly wrong here, The USAF still wanted to get rid of the A-10 before, during, and after The first gulf war. A lot of kills given to the A-10 were later credited to F-15/16’s after review. The only thing keeping the A-10 alive is Congress absolutely refusing to let the Air Force look for a new aircraft the same way they refuse to allow the navy to finally retire all battleships.

Yep, though I want to add one thing. During the Gulf War, armor kills were literally prohibited from being attributed to anything that wasn't an A-10 because it was very important that it didn't look like the waste of money it was. Instead, it ended up getting grounded because it was being shot too often. It was outperformed by every jet that could carry missiles or bombs, with the real superstar being the F-111.

A small thing, the belt types on the A-10 currently although look the same, they are not. The AP-I shell on the ground belt has the same 102mm max pen but has significantly better angle penetration than the API-T shell. And dealing with Russian MBTs the extra angle pen is really useful in my opinion

I don’t think thats the case tho, does it have better angle pen on the ground belts on the stat card? If not, its just because the ground belts do better cuz it has more ap rounds per brrrrt

@@rawandmohammed5642 it does, both the ground belt and stealth belt have significantly better angle penetration, check the stat card to see just by how much but if my memory serves me correctly its around a 20-30% improvement.
_Air RB in a nutshell:_
-If you’re the only A-10 on your team, it’s gonna be a fun game…
-If at least half of your team composition is just American Freedom, you and your team will be slaughtered…
Air RB right now is splitting the US up most games to try to deal with the spam, so at least it won’t affect win rates
I noticed the same thing. When I fly the A-10 out, and half my team is A-10s, we just get slaughtered. If there are only 1 or 2, it ends up being a pretty normal match.
Same as always is with Ju 288s.

I've found that if I side climb and go way tf up there, it gives the battle time to start, and I can see clearly where the enemy is, then I can dive in, fire 2 9Ls and hope for the best.
Or, if my side is empty (jet games seem to be like little kids playing soccer, mostly all in one spot til its over) I can just clean up and and all ground targets
The A10 was outperformed by the F111 in the Gulf War, in the A10s role, yet the F111 was decommissioned. The A10 actually had the lowest kill per sortie of any U.S. tactical aircraft of the Gulf War. I do like the A10 because it's a symbol of badass, but I wouldn't pick the A10 for my team over other jets which perform better in the same role.
That and the A10 had shit situational awareness resulting in many friendly fire incidents, pilots were literally having to eyeball their targets or use binoculars..... in fucking 1991. Meanwhile the F111 performed great with its proper modern precision weapons and guided bombs with proper situational awareness for the crew.
The F111 if I understand the info was decommissioned due to the high maintenance time required in between sorties
Pro tip, raise your flaps when you touch down. It puts some more weight on your brakes and shortens your landing run
Heard this tip back in 2016 and never stopped using it since, very helpful to shorten your stopping distance by about 50-80 meters or so
Is it still worth it? Did some tests in the Super Mystere and as far as I can tell the extra drag from keeping them open (at least at first) helps more,landing repeatedly at 300 kmh I had the shortest distances 7 times out of 10 with landing flaps down.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was plane dependant, flaps with way more lift than drag are probably better to retract
@@xiphosura413 if you get that into it, there’s probably a specific speed at which you should raise flaps to minimize landing run
@@hybrid_grizzly Very true, speed would have a big effect. I wonder if there is a general rule of thumb, like "if you can see you got huge flaps, keep em out, raise smaller ones at around 200 kph" or something like that.

Funny thing is the 105 losses were almost directly caused by the idiotic ROEs dictated by McNamara and Johnson. It was a good plane for what it was designed to do. And even filled roles further than its original purpose. Thuds and their pilots are so overlooked on by history it's sort of sad..

Jihad against the A10 horde with my A5C has been extremely fun, especially with the GLA soundtrack from C&C in the background.
Actually A-10 didnt performed well during gulf war, suffering the higher rate of loss per mission of USA strike aircraft, it was also not able to use its gun due to heavy damaged following gun passe, and at the end its anti tank/ attaque role were mainly realised by A-6/F-111F ton only name a few
It was really effective against Warrior IFVs

A-10 in Air RB = fun
The early A model should not have CCIP. The pilots had to manually adjust an aiming reticle for gun, rockets and bombs.

So far i've destroyed over 20 of them with the Tunguska and many more with the G91 R4, both in ground rb.
Pretty easy kills.
P.s. if you want an SL printing cas premium get the British Wyvern.
In air rb you outpace nearly everything and can quite often destroy several bases.
In ground rb you'll kill whatever you want, i use it at 7.0 with the avre and it performs fine there even though it is a 4.0 airplane.
Untill it faces radar spaa though.

the A-10 is handily the most satisfying vehicle I've ever used in the near 6 years of playing wt. I'm biased but compared to the M1 Abrams when it first dropped, it's a completely different feel when destroying targets. Of course, I've had games where I get sent to hanger pretty quick, but as I've experienced, you can play 3 hours getting wrecked, to have that one game where you annihilate 3 or more targets with just your BRRRRRRRRT, let alone w.e ordinance you're carrying, leaving you having to clean your room from the nut you just BRRRT'd. As an addition to my 9.7 lineup, I'm constantly getting 8+ kills per game with the majority due to the A-10(2-4 at prolly a 75% rate) in-ground RB, while in my 11.0, it feels like a proper knife fight against AA, but oh lord if you get that one game where no one is watching the skies, its an SL gold mine. And from the 20 or so hours I've put on the A-10, I find a much better success than in the A7(prolly cause I fucking suck with planes but still). I really feel like it's playing just as I expected it too, gets eaten 75% of the time, but is allowed to loiter or drop maves, can have some serious kill streaks.
My two cents.

Yup since it's coming out, especially the premium version I've seen A10s in AB just floating around barely popping counter measures getting picked apart by nearly everything (subsonic, Supersonic, Props Lmao). I always target the A10s first since they seem to be the easiest ones.
after the missile changes oh boy, the a10 is dominating air rb, easily getting 2-3 kills every match, and the only times I dont are when my team obliterates the enemy before i get to the fight, or a decent amount of the time people will for whatever reason commit to headon's with a10's.

Whenever I go in for gun runs on ground rb there’s always 3 AAAs sitting in some tree line that blindside me with a missile I can’t even see coming from my back even when I pop chaff and flares constantly or get shot out of the sky by an mg. Is this just a reality of planes in rbs or is it related to the sheer volume of slow A-10s flying now?
While there is certainly more SPAA presence than usual, this is simply the reality in Ground RB. You’re gonna want to use standoff weapons against SPAA before going in close.
Also set up periodic countermeasures; you have so many you won’t run out
Its both. SPAA are very strong most of the time in the current game modes/meta, and a lot more people seem to be taking them out earlier in anticipation of warthog dinner.

I usually use the ADATS(british one) and most of the time i use the radar as a Early warning for planes, in the case of the A 10, i almost never go for a lock, because of the insane number of Chaffs, so yeah, the AAs are a bit mega overkill for the plane when its manually guided
It's the reality of the A-10.
All the SPAA has to "git gud" against helicopters that are far more maneuverable and can shoot in a different direction from where they're travelling. Or the AAA has to deal with much faster jets in high subsonic range. The A-10 is in a difficult middle ground of being neither that maneuverable nor that fast.
You may hear a lot of hype for the A-10, it's from "reformers" who kinda lost their minds over the cost of modern combat jets and kinda went to the other extreme absolutely falling in love with technologically simple low performance aircraft, the A-10 being the closest to their ideal. But the A-10 was a bad idea.
Interesting that you and Ash came to basically opposite conclusions about the Late: he says it's an able dogfighter in Air and SAM bait in Ground. I wonder if that's just sample size showing or if there are metagame differences between servers.
Haven't seen anyone else's takes on it, but its only natural different reviews will come to different conclusions sometimes. Its all subjective.
I think its also due to different cas playstyles, i would say the a10 has completely different cas strengths and weaknesses compared to every single other aircraft at that br. Though I do agree the a10 late is simply amazing in rb, easily getting 2-3 kills at minimum. In ground I tried to play it like I do russian jet cas, where you climb to 6-7000m and dive to avoid aa, where as in the a10 late i fly as low as possible, unless I have mavericks, then I just stay at about 2km-3km of altitude and around 6km from the battlefield and target the aa before getting close for useful cas.
The saddest part about the 9ls in game is they function like a semi aspect 9g instead of the 40g off rail monster irl. It doesn't even achieve the 30g posted, and fails to hit slow targets.
Great. Gaijin should stop selling god tier missiles to premium kiddies and make them use the thick of the shit that anyone who actually has to grind with tech tree planes learns how to use

I have been seeing people not use this vehicles long distance munitions and get so close that spaa has no problem chewing it. Why do people refuse to take responsibility even when there are no consequences, maybe bettering themselves. This is a game and comparing in game performance to real world is not a good idea. Some time it feels like people forget they are playing a game.
oh, no, they didnt forget else, they wouldn't feed the enemy team points. As for it's stand-off weapons, it really can use them because it needs to climb very high and move very fast, which it just can't do, and even if it could, it'd get blapped by any plane that wanted to blap it.
Because War Thunder prides itself somewhat on it's "realistic" adaptations of vehicle combat, albeit at the bare minimum. They are the only game that fills the "simcade" category here, so players often try to make the game as realistic as possible despite the fruitless endeavor

Fun fact: the A10s engines where actually developed into the CF34 (a civilian version with minimal changes) and now power most regional jets of the CRJ and E-Jet lineage and was even proposed as a replacement for the B52s engines
ok I am a year late but just got the A10... (yeah it took that long to grind it ) Lets put it this way in the first 3 days I got 20 air kills. and over 50 ground kills. with over 10 tons of base bombings. To say its effective is an under statement. To put it in perspective it took 2 weeks to have the same results in the Viggen at same br
Your history tidbit on the a10 is...kinda innacurate. The a10 contributed to enough freindly fire incidents to have the british single it out and ask for it to be withdrawn. It also killed the absolute fewest tanks out of literally every coalition aircraft involved in any theatre in the middle east.
It was only built to kill the cheyenne and was expected to die in the first few weeks of an opening defense of the fulda gap.
Yeah, A-10 is possibly the most overrated ‘modern’ aircraft. Also lol’d at the “no plans to replace” it because the Air Force has been trying to retire the outdated thing for years but congress keeps denying the request because of the misleading mythical status it has attained.

@@jiggy6486 Yep. A-10 is insanely inefficient at its job; in a conventional conflict where the enemy has AA you'd be better off using F-15s, F-16s and apaches etc for taking out tanks/positions.
In a low intensity conflict where AA is a non-issue, which is the only place where the A-10 can work somewhat safely, you're better off using a COIN aircraft like a Super Tucano.
It wasn't built to kill the Cheyenne. The USAF and Army chiefs of staff buried the hatchet. The government analyzed the Cheyenne, Harrier and A-10 and decided that they were all different enough and there was no redundancy.
The Cheyenne was killed by its troubled development and possibly Lyndon B. Johnson's links to Bell.

The issue with the Aim-9l is the low launch speed associated with the plane. If this was mounted on a harrier the plane would be totally broken.
The never ending popcorn contest of US air force head sheds wanting to retire their born for it CAS air platform, while others who know what they are talking about - try to keep it flying.

Weird to see how we've gone from 102mm of pen on the main gun. Yet now we are around 76mm or so.
ye the A10 is completely useless now. Russia of course gets the Su25 which is better in any way possible. Love the bias towards a certain nation that is completely failing a war right now.
They could have done a better job with the looks of the Gun firing. The smoke and the muzzle flash doesn't look too realistic. atleast imho. I was a bit disappointed.
The difference in ATGMs might seen small, but from playtesting both of these it has a massive impact. The TV guided missile just straight up doesn't function properly the majority of the time, and is a massive frustration, to the point where you'd get more usage out of the rockets. Conversely, the IR missile functions perfectly as it should. I think Gaijin should change the A10 early to have the same IR missile, as for Air battles it doesn't particularly make much of a difference (as the GAU is so overwhelming when striking ground targets already), and for ground battles it would actually make the ATGMs functional.
It's kinda funny that the original Thunderbolt, the P-47, is actually faster than the A-10!
I play dcs all the time with the a10a, i just wish it got the ecm pods it could carry, hopefully the late gets it a little later after we start seeing things like electronic warfare being implemented in game

I don't get why people think this plane is ugly. I mean, it looks like exactly what it is, a brick with wings that's meant to obliterate tanks. I put it on the same level as the IL-2, thick but still very pretty in their own way. It's definitely one of my favorite jets in the world for reputation alone, not to mention that sound which can't be measured, compared, or beaten.
Ugly isn't the right word; "not aero" makes more sense.

But the thing that I'm wondering: Is the A-10A Late gonna get the GBU-8 aswell?? It had it on the devserver and it makes a lot of sense to get it since it is literally the ''later'' variant.
Also the GBU-8/15 modification on the F-4E Phantom II says it's possible to carry the GBU-8 or GBU-15 yet we can only carry the GBU-15 LMAO
The buzz on the discord is that the GBU-8 will NOT be coming to the A-10aLate
F-105 did not fly any CAS in the vietnam war, the high loss rates come from them being forced to do deep strikes in north vietnam, aka the most heavily defended airspace of the 60s and 70s
however all CAS was performed in south vietnam, where the largest caliber of AAA was 23mm towed guns. but mostly small arms and medium machine guns.
and really no, the A-10 at that BR is actually one of the worse CAS aircraft
I rather take my A-4 or A-7 than this thing, simply because with the Low speed and rate of climb you are unlikely to get into a good firing position and avoid radar detection with altitude
I'm not happy about this addition into War Thunder.. this plane just destroyed meta of 9.7 BR in Air RB, I still can't understand how they could place this plane to BR where most of the planes doesn't get any countermeasures, and A-10 has almost 500 of them... Also, it's a BR where planes get only basic IR missiles, not strongest sidewinders. Placing plane down to this battle rating just because lower speed isn't a way, and it really let me down...

The little history lesson was completely wrong in almost every aspect. First of all the A10 performed very poorly in the Gulf War and had quite a few losses. Secondly there are plans to replace it with the F35

A10s kills were overestimated by a large margin. The actual best anti tank planes were the F15E and F111.
The A10 was ineffective compared to pretty much every other plane due to having better technology.
I kinda want a-10 to be good but at the same time i dont want for it to be skilless machine like harrier and yak-3something
It will only be good if it's one a-10 protected by an entire team of 11.0 American fighters.

U fargot that AGM 65D have thermals. Huge advantage if ur blind as me... + literally got 20k rp on first air rb with early one.
I bought the prem one for sim. Tought it would be a good thing for grinding... But damn i suffer. I wanted the dumb bombs for taking out bases... the TV dont work so good for me. It feels realy strange in VR and takes upp the whole screen. Cant controll it in cockpit. And i need to use them to take out the AI first, cous any ground units and bombtargets have a group of anti air who apperently cant miss. So i figuerd, lets go dumbombs, and high as f-ck. The issue is then, i cant se the bombing recticle if i dont dive extremly close. 90 degree strait to the ground. If im lucky ill se it. But often i dont... So, any tips on how to bomb with this thing? Cant find any youtuber mention this issue with the bombsight on the A-10.
im thinking on buying it. should i buy this or su-25k?? i am a beginner btw and the farthest I've gotten in my planes is buying the b-25j

Still would have preferred the f-111 it would be overall more practical and feel less like a toy then the a-10 as well as being much less likely to destroy the matchmaking while giving other tech trees some swing wing jets in theory similar to the mig-27
In short if you're playing console, give up with tv guided munitions... Use the god gun and dumb bombs
