- If you have a Craftsman 2x20 Volt brushless lawnmower model number CMCMW220 or CMCMW220P2 and it does not work out of the box, after a few uses, or after being folded for storage this video details the location of the safety interlock and how to get the lawn mower to function. It is most likely NOT actually broken right out of the box, there is a poorly designed interlock on the right side of the mower that needs to be pulled into the correct position.
Recycled the old gas lawn mower after last season. Thought I'd try the battery mowers. This one was just perfect, until, out of the blue, it wasn't. 😞 Thank you very much for this video!! You saved me from trying to find a repair person. 🙂
This didn't work for me. The thing is still dead as a doornail. I pulled it up as much as I can. I can't pull it up anymore
I can’t even pull mine up
More it automatically lifts itself in the upright position and it does nothing. I can’t even adjust it because it automatically in the right position for me
Try calling the toll free Craftsman support number on the rear bagger's swing door lable near the left corner and request a warranty replacement mower.
Yeah nice to know about but still not working for me.
Fiddling with a safety lock beats the living hell out of messing with oil, spark plugs, screwing with the rip cord and your shoulder
Thanks! I knew I saw or touched that before but didn't remember to mess with it again
If I could like this 1000 times, I would. Thank you for putting this information out there. It helped me.
Thank you SO much for this video. We’ve had ours for a couple months, so unsure how this interlock got depressed, but that totally fixed the issue.
Mine still isn’t working after that 😭 this is the second one I’ve had too. Anything else it could be? The batteries are charged
Same here
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I purchased this mower and returned it because just like you said I used it once and after putting it away and bringing it back out a few weeks later it would not start. After a long struggle with Lowes I got an exchange and the same thing happened again, the thing would not start. Now that I know that switch sticks I'm thinking of returning this one as well.
Thank you so much for posting this. Very public-spirited of you. Unfortunately, my safety switch broke so severely even after popping it out, the cut-out remained in place and it won't work. I have to buy a new mower. But you saved me the cost and time of getting someone to repair this, since I now know it is permanently broken. Getting a new one this week--it certainly won't be a Craftsman! Again, much appreciated.
Just bought mine last weekend. I folded it up when I was done and went to use it today a week old and it wouldn't turn on. Thank god I found this video because I was going to take it back. My switch was stuck down. It does have a spring but when its pressed all the way down it gets stuck. I have to actually stick a little screwdriver under it and pop it back up.
Thank You, this is a life saver, I bought it recently, unboxed, charged the batteries for 1 hour, took it to the lawn, it never started, searched couple of Videos, but no one clearly mentioned about this crappy interlock thing. I packed it to return, now I might keep it. Nice useful video 👍
It hasn’t been a massive problem for me through using it. Once you get it set up and working it’s reliable. I’d just be cautious to always let people know about the quirks of the tool if you ever let someone borrow it or have a kid mow the lawn or whatever so they don’t think they “broke” it.
@@joshuav4965 Right, Thank you
Thank you for the video. it lead me to the issue I had. the lever that pushes in even when out the mower would still not start. If you open the handles fully then push the lever down then look at the spring behind the lever. If the spring in not totally compressed back towards the handles the mower will not start. I pushed the spring back towards the handle the spring locks in place once it is locked in place and the lever is out then the mower will start.
Thanks! I folded it up and was wondering why it somehow stoped working!!! Your a lifesaver!!!
Thank you very much for this!I seen many reviews people saying they stored it after using and wouldn't work again, this is why!!THANK YOU AGAIN very helpful!
this video is so needed for owners of this mower!! thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the information. I had replaced my lawnmower blade and when I went to start it. It was dead. I never noticed that switch cuz it blended in so well. It was 1 month out of warranty. So I thought it was a warranty gremlin. 😂 I’m good to go now. Thx you the man! 🤘🏽
Thank you You saved me a ton of time I was getting ready to start taking it apart
Just want to say I really appreciate you taking the time to share this. Really saved my bacon
We were having the same issue, but it wasn’t the safety lock out lever.
It was the button on the side of the handle that you push before pulling the lever down to start it. Seems on ours, you really have to push that button firmly and with even pressure before pulling the lever down to start it. Maybe the button has become a little worn. Might be worth a try for you all that this video didn’t work for.
Thanks brother u just saved me a trip to lowes
Man thank you I got it back working!
I Just Bought Mines On Memorial-Day, I Haven’t Used It Yet Due To The Rain…However, Thank You For This Information….🙌
You just kept mine out of a dumpster. Used it one time and stored it for the winter... read the whole stinking manual and didn’t come up with this. Much appreciated.
Thank you!!! You are amazing. Push the button and the pull the handle lever in.
Thank you so much for this!! I was getting pretty aggravated!!
It works for us. Thank you for this video which saved us a lot of time. My friend gave us this used lawnmower and we couldn’t figure out how to get it started. Thanks again.
Thanks for this because damn if I didn't head straight down in the garage to see if it was the problem, and it was!
When I hold down the side button and pull back the red lever I don’t get a click sound anymore and my mower refuses to start. Any advice on that ?
Thank you sooo much .I was fixing to go buy a new one .YOU WERE RIGHT.BLESS YOU
Oh my God. Glad it was a simple fix. Saved my day
I just bought mine month ago and today when I'm gonna use it won't turn on. I tried everything and it's still not working. Someone help me if can. Thanks

Can you fold the handle down flat while it's extended? I want to hand this from the handle on my garage wall to take up the least amount of space. One of the big benefits of this is that it's low profile unlike the others out there, but I don't want to fold it like you showed as it comes in the box; that's not ideal for hanging it.
This happened to me a when I brought it out from storage after the winter. Thank you for this info.
Mine didnt trigger until after a couple months of use. Was about to take it back till I came across your video. Thank you.
My safety is out but it’s still not working. There no tension in the metal handle and it’s not starting
Same with mine!

You are the man THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I knew that it had to be something simple!!! I’m so happy for your video, I really appreciate you sharing. May you always be blessed!!
I just got one of these. Haven’t used it yet. Thank you so much.
Thanks for ur video helps a lot
Thanks bought used great price because would not start you advise works starts right up.
You probably just saved me a bunch of money, I'll check tomorrow! Thanks! 🙏
Thank you for this video. Of all the videos I watched - this is the one I needed.
You're the man! Thx bro
Thank you so much you are a lifesaver. ❤
Great video thanks for sharing 👍
My safety spring is out and it's still not turning on any suggestions
Well done. Saved me hours of trouble shooting!
Amazing that Craftsman themselves sent me to this video. Sheesh.
Man you made my day thanks a lot
Used mine 3 times went to use a 4th and won't start , only problem is my latch is out and I can't even get that latch to lock down to cause that problem
Super helpful!
Thank you, you just saved me a lot of hair pulling 🙏😁
Man this helped a lot. Thanks
Thanks man. I never would have figured that out.
Thank you! Great video. Now our 2 year old machine works again!!!!
Looks like a simple small yard mower
Does anyone know the measurements for the discharge chute?
Spray paint the wheel retainer clips to slow the rust down, if you wash the mower off as you should the wheel retaining clips will rust and crumble fast and the wheels will come off.
3 of mine came off so I put half inch OD collars on mine and now it's good.
Thank you for making the video it was very helpful. They need to be better with their documentation. And actually they should make that a red switch so it is easily noticed.
Really saved my ass. Thanks
Doing the good work here 👏
Is there any vids on here on how to take the wheels off?
I said it saved me me but the mower stopped the second time I tried after adjusting level. Can’t get it started again. Interlock is up
Ive had mine in the shed for 4 months now and was unable to return to store so you saved my ass from the wife killing me
Thank you so much.
Feeding the algorithm thank you for the help
I hit a high patch of grass and it shut down and wouldnt start again. I gave it a rest, came back and smoke started coming from under the red cover....
Model CMCMWSP220 2x20V MAX* Self‑Propelled Lawn Mower. Any advice for this model not staying on? cuts off after 2 to 3 minutes?
Same problem here. Sometimes it will run for a few mins, sometimes it turn off after 1 second. What did you figure out with yours?
Thank you thank you thank you!
This video saved me from the wraith of my wife. Thank you!
Well that is why I am going to try now, was cutting yesterday and it stopped working, was hoping I didn't have to take it apart
What's the difference between the 220 vs 220P2?
P is code for the 5.0 battery, and 2 means it comes with 2 of them. Tools that end with B are bare tool only.
The blades fell off while I was mowing.....I put them back on, but now it won't spin the blades. Can you show me the parts around the blades? I may be missing a part? When I go to start it, it makes a small sound, but blades don't spin. The blades can be spun easily by hand, like there is a part missing. I need to see what holds the blades on.
Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that. I haven’t torn my lawn mower down to that level. I have removed the blade for sharpening as the instruction manual DOES mention but I’d assume your mower might be truly broken.
Just being curious I found this video after already fixing it! Same problem. Took the top and handle off to Ohm all the wires out until I found 2 little green wires😂
This didn't work on my unit. The interlock is on the up position and I still don't get power. The lawnmower sucks

Love you
Wish I could get one of the returned units
Your the Freaking truth man thank you saved us money today
Thank you. It was going to go curbside.
The safety interlock is all the way up and still don't work! On mine this interlock returns by itself and don't start. It's anything else to put it to work?

Mine still won't start and I don't know why
Same
Any news on this. Mine won’t start either

Can you use 9ah batteries?
You can use any size V20 batteries. Personally, I only use the 9.0’s because I want to be able to finish without having to recharge or do a battery swap.
yeah
what happens when i do that and it still doesn't work?

To do my lawn at home I would probably need 4 9ah bats
Thank you!!!! You made my day!
Im having a issue with it stopping once I start to mow then I have to let is sit then its dead ? Mower is Garbage and only had it one season

Did you get it fixed? I’m having a similar problem. The mower seems to be shutting itself down, even with full batteries. Sometimes after just 1 second.
Every time I see an electronic lawnmower I always want to engine swap it
First one I bought wouldn't start. Exchanged it. Second one wouldn't start. Took me an hour to figure out this was the problem. Has to be costing Craftsman tons of money on returns when all they need to do is put it in the manual or use a sticker by the safety switch.

Shuld get the 60 volt
Where is the mower's date code?
The date code is under the rear bagger's swing door.
Use 9 ah for bigger yard
Quit i/2 way through the first mowing. Daughter bought the thing. I would never buy a modern Craftsman product, I own Craftsman power tools that I bought in the 1970s, and with new brushes, they still run fine, I have 40-50-year-old C'man wrenches that are still great. New stuff is not the same. Too bad. It was once a quality product. By the way thanks for the tip. That is not this mower's problem. Going to disassemble the safety mechanism assembly and see what's up in there.
Thank you for your video, my wife found your video and "fixed" our new mower. again, thanks, well done.
Have you thought about using 9ah batteries 👀🤔
Did you use 9ah batteries. I’m curious. My doesn’t mow as well as I thought it would. I have grass that is cut and then pieces the mower misses and was wondering if 2 9ah batteries might get the blade spinning fast and might cut all the grass instead of leaving patches
@@mikevollmer3579 I have the old 60v it cuts ok but you can't let it get to out of hand
That was not the fix for mine, anyone else seen any fixes?

Sure wish this was what the problem was for me but this didn't work still just "clicks" when I try to start it......): Guess it goes back and I buy a gas one......
