I love that this movie has an antagonist for everyone. Goldi as the sympathetic antagonist. Jack as the pure evil antagonist. The Wolf as the force-of-nature antagonist.
@ursidae97 yeah but she's only really an antagonist for her first 5 minutes of screen time. Afterwards, she reluctantly helps Puss and Perito and they slowly form a team together
It also shows that Perrito is not just in this movie for comedy and to just get on Puss, and everyone else’s nerves which I’m honestly glad that wasn’t the only purpose for this character. You see Perrito as a comic relief at times, but he also knows when to slow himself down, and feel sympathetic for others that have anxiety problems and are emotionally scared. And he understood Puss’s pain with no word, his face and his doggie whimper says it all. I was all like “Aww!” 🥺 Such a nice and lovable side character.🥹
I stopped myself from crying but at the end I absolutely bawled from remembering the three scenes with Perrito and Goldilocks being told that her family was 'just right'.
it honestly kinda pisses me off lol: dreamworks, homies, you gotta work on your marketing game. i wanna support you every time you make something this incredible, but i also dont wanna just pay for every movie you put out because good God above have you put out some stinkers in the past. TELL ME which movies you actually gave a shit about and id be so much more likely to happily skip into a theater with my friends and watch them!
I love how they resolved Puss and Softpaw's relationship issues. No unnecessarily dragged out drama, no added ridiculous misunderstanding to make the current problems even worse. It was mentioned in one scene and several scenes later they talked it out. They just talked it out.
Technically the drama was brought back, but it was natural and really well done. They talked it out, but then Kitty felt betrayed when he saw them, and still ran off alone with the wish, (and it was pretty much betrayal, just not malicious). Especially after she already suggested they could share the wish (which could have just meant she'd let him have it, as long as they stick together) But yeah, it was really refreshing to see the protagonists just talk it out
That's what The Last Wish does better than most other movies, the 3rd act conflict and misunderstandings barely happened and the characters just talked it out if there was a misunderstanding.
I really like how it was just a simple story about her learning to put trust in puss and her freinds again, that was all she really needed, and they didn't artificially extend it or not give it proper development, it was just a simple lesson that the movie gave time to play out and it worked
I belive that things like this is what made it possible for the movie to have so many ,,villains" and stories playing at the same time. They never wasted time trying to make problems worst for extra drama.
It's even better because he was trying to pull it out of the magical nanny bag in a similar manner to how someone would attempt to pull it out of the rock, having trouble with it at first and finally pulled it out only to reveal it was still stuck in the rock it came with XD
I guess nobody noticed, but i just love how Puss and Kitty don't fight about their trust issues. Kitty is open to forgive Puss, and actually LISTENS to him when needed. No useless cliche misunderstandings
This is why this movie makes real people, not just characters moved by the plot to make nonsensical decisions, you can see it with the mother of Goldilocks when she discovered her actual wish, in other films like Alvin and the Chipmunks it could end with a stupid discussion with the bear mother asking Goldilocks to leave, but instead, she just helped her to make her wish come true with no resentment, something that a real mother (no matter how conflicting your relationship with her could be) does unconditionally, accompany you till the end of your way.
And the one time there is a missunderstanding, it's not just some dumb situation that could have been perfectly avoided if the character took the time to explain it. The whole thing was too bizarre to believe, and Puss was just too distraught to be able to explain it in detail, or realize how his words could've been missinterpreted. "When you said you were being followed by death, I thought you were just being dramatic." xD (Might not be exact quote as I watched it in Spanish)
@@mightbeagiant yeah... just when puss goes to the wishing star in his panic, it almost feels like we are going that route but thankfully it doesnt (in part of the frenetic nature of the whole fight scene of jack and the bear family arriving.... and death too at the end doesn't give them a moment to get to the "misunderstanding")
I'm sad he didn't mention the part where the dog sits on puss's lap and acts like a therapy dog while puss is panicking and can't get out of his head. that scene was really good, also I just like seeing how scared puss was, it makes it feel so real, since he's so fearless but this is the one thing he's truly terrified of.
This movie is actually RESPECTFUL to its audience and doesnt treat the audience like they're stupid. They dont do the whole "tell dont show" thing that have plagued a lot of animated movies over the last decade. The scene with Puss running into the forest having a panic attack and Perrito getting a chance to be the therapy dog he wanted to be was SUCH a good moment. The character acting was phenomenal, and they did such a good job showcasing what panic attacks like that can do to people and the process of calming down from one. What makes it so good though is that they don't spoonfeed you any of that information. Perrito doesn't go "wow, I get to be the therapy dog now!" It's simply just implied and forces the viewer to think more for themselves. Makes the plot way more memorable as a result since it "forces" the viewer to callback in their memory to that moment. It's absolutely criminal that this movie isn't doing better numbers in the box office.
I think it's more that the movie treated that scene with respect by never cutting away and taking the reaction very seriously. We never get a flashback to Perrito saying something nor do we hear Puss' thoughts or some kind of flashback. We only get to see Perrito him seeing and hearing Puss visibly have a panic attack and Perrito never tries to make Puss laugh or snap out of it, the tone is consistently serious and Perrito instead does the right thing and provides comfort and presence which is just perfect.
A cool thing about the movie is that Death actually stopped chasing Puss when he went to Mama Luna. It's not like Death couldn't find him. HE'S DEATH. He is everywhere all at once. But once he realized Puss decided to settle and accepted his mortality, he stopped. He decided to let Puss live out his life in Peace. Puss spent days or maybe even weeks at Mama Luna's house. And Death never came. It's only when Puss decided to try get the wish that Death realized his mistake. Puss hasn't changed and wanted to cheat him again. He almost immidieatly returns to the chase and finds Puss VERY quickly. He thinks at this point that Puss will never change. He will end this no matter what. In his last scene he asks Puss if he knows that they'll meet again, to make sure Puss has changed. Once Puss agrees, Death knows he can let that cat of the hook.
The way I saw it, Death wasn't actually chasing Puss. It was the other way around. Puss was courting death with his daredevil heists and heroics. When Puss was temporarily retired in the sanctuary he was no longer risking his life, so Death in that period was now a fair ways off, no longer right around the corner.
There's also probably some degree of... Death wanted Puss to suffer, he wanted to punish him for his hubris and disrespect. Humbling him and then killing him himself would've achieved that, but letting him rot and wither away in obscurity, dying slowly from boredom, too scared of his own mortality to leave his safety behind? That would've been just as satisfying a way to bring down the arrogant little legend.
The fun thing is that everyone kinda got their wish despite not making one. - Goldie wanted a family, and she learned she already had one. - Kitty wanted someone she could trust, and she met one. - Puss wanted his lives back, and he got one that was worth eight more. - Wolf wanted to see an arrogant, death-defying prick die. And he did. Purrito didn't really have a wish, but one could argue that attaining comradery was a wish he didn't know he wanted. Jack didn't really get his wish (unless you consider magic coarsing through his body and killing him), but that makes sense since he's, as Jimminy puts it, an irredeemable monster. This movie is a fucking masterpiece.
@@DimT670 And funnily enough, he took pretty much all of the magic he owned with him on the trip. And considering he had some of the most powerful artifacts in folklore like Excalibur and the Phoenix
Even more amazing when you realized the life that flashed before his eyes were just his last one. When he heads up to answer Death, his hat uncovers Kitty and Perrito behind.
Shit i just realized Look at goldilock's wish and the path that was given to her on its own. She wanted to wish for an actual family, so the map told her to stop and think because what she wants might already be in front of her, and then showed her their house. IN FACT, every time she tried to get out the path made her walk in circles, it was not the bear following the wrong trail. From the very beginning, HER path implied finding out the family she already had first to be able to get a wish. In the same manner, softpaws has the path of sorrows because she only wanted someone she could trust, puss in boots had the cave of loneliness because he was supposed to realize that he didnt need to be alone. It makes me wonder what Big Jack Horner's map and path would have looked like.
There was so much characterization and set ups in each path that the level of detail is staggering. Even Perrito's "joke path" is about him just wanting friendship and basically just coming up with ways for him, Puss and Kitty to bond with each other.
Just a correction, kitty got the path of loneliness because she couldn’t trust anyone and it would be her confronting her fear of being alone while puss got the cave of lost souls (his past lives)
“You’re not gonna shoot a puppy, are you Jack?” “Yeah, in the face, why?” I love Jack Horner, it’s been a while since we’ve had a character who’s just indulgently evil.
In addition to the paint brush animation, I was super impressed with how easily it combined with the texture details. The fact that Puss's eyes were large, cartoony green while his fur is hyperdetailed and life-like fit together surprisingly perfectly
He looks so much better in this movie than his previous versions! I watched an "Evolution of Puss In Boots" video that showed every one of his appearances in Shrek and spin-off content, and his eyes look so odd and different compared to now.
Fun fact: you'll notice the only main character that didn't get a wanted poster (or in Perrito's case an unwanted poster) was death. Because, you can't capture or kill death
Also foreshadows that he isn’t a bounty hunter. Bounty hunters usually have hiring posters or calling cards. But he isn’t a bounty hunter at all. He is death himself.
@@thegaminghydra592 ... I JUST NOW REALIZED THAT!!!!! I legit thought it was Puss having PTSD and seeing visions of him but with that confirmation that he is not some hallucination brought up by trauma and that he is legit there, that is an amazing little detail you dont notice unless you saw it multiple times
Puss in the forest having a full panic attack only to be calmed by one of the previously established side characters really hit me hard. That level of story telling in a movie like this is unheard of. This movie never treats its audience like children, despite being seemingly marketed for them. Very mature story telling with little to no hand holding.
BROOO! i cried at that part, he's full on scared and Perrito was trying to calm him down JUST LIKE THE FIRST TIME THEY MET WHERE HE WANTED TO BE AN EMOTIONAL SUPPORT DOG, AND HE ACTUALLY ACHIEVED IT, BY CALMING HIS FRIEND DOWN oh my god its so lovely, brings to fucking tears
@@amiiboguy7288 i think it's because they are so unexpected and since the writers can't go full bold on the mature side of the story because of the children, they are forced to come up with clever ways to implement it without it being adult only and this movie definitely did it with it's subtle scenes
I feel this movie is more geared towards adults because only they can really know the themes that are happening, such as living your life to the fullest and not wasting it.
took my kids to see this in theaters based on this review alone. This movie is phenomenal. It has no business being as good as it is but I’m thankful for it.
One thing I noticed about the movie that not a lot of people talk about is the relationship between Goldie and her mom, the mom cares immensely about Goldie and only wants the best for her even when she knows about her wish, their relationship displays a deep mother-daughter bond that seems genuine and real.
yes omg that scene where mama bear is clearly struggling not to show her heartbreak while agreeing to helping goldie with the wish was just :( she clearly loved her so much that she was willing to set aside her feelings just for her
It's depressing to think that the last movie review uploaded on the channel before the accident was for a film about valuing your life and the people around you to the fullest. Life is temporary and can be taken away from us at anytime, sometimes entirely out of our control. We may not be able to control certain outcomes in the future, but we can atleast use our time to be with friends and family as much as we can till then. If you're reading this James, I may not have any experience with losing friends and family, but I can emphasize with the thought of how painful it would be to lose someone you love. I hope you're able to pull through this event, even if you don't upload anymore; and I wish Chris and Patrick made the best out of their life.
now that i know i give my deepest sorrows to james i wish he and his family all the best for the rest of their lives may Chris and Patrick rest in peace
@@Yuni-is-Schrodingers-Fox He, his best friend, and his brother got into a car crash, James is the sole survivor but is in vertical condition as of this February.
Obviously his movie is visually gorgeous but i think the biggest praise i can offer it is that i never cringed or groaned at a single joke. None of the comedy relies on contemporary references, there’s no lines that i felt were stupid. It was all just really solid comedy, and Perrito and Jack were a goddamn goldmine of comedy.
Contemporary references can be pretty good when done right tho. Like with all jokes and humor, it’s all in the execution. When done right it can be really great, contemporary or not
Literally the only thing I could think of is the number of 'too ___' -> 'too ___' -> 'just right' lines, but I'm sure it isn't as much as I feel it is and it does make sense since it's only the bear family that says them.
meh. wasn't too big of a fan of most of perrito's comedic lines personally - imo they just leaned way too far into tumblr-esque hyper energy with a dash of random XD thrown in.
the only one that even sort of pushed me in that direction was one of the characters said something about the unicorn horn's being "savage" but, well, despite it's overuse in cringe culture that word DOES have an actual meaning, and indiscriminate instantaneous death would probably qualify well enough.
I think word-of-mouth from people like Schaff has done a lot for this movie. Like the first weekend it was out it didn't do that well because we all figured it would be another mediocre cash grab, but it's quality has spoken for itself and is convincing people who otherwise would've skipped this movie to go see it. I know I would've likely skipped it, and now I've seen it TWICE
@@dr_doritotf2305 No, he survived, but his friend and brother contributed to the content a lot, he literally said he watched the movie with one of them in the video.
The lone wolf Villian/protagonist in stories always has relation to death from red riding hood to werewolves; losing life, losing humanity, and isolation/hunger all wrapped into one character/essence it makes a lot of sense to go fairytales?wolf while knowing that it was a puppy at one point/in a group/and could have been like a pet/dog under different circumstances/situations
As someone with a very intense fear of death, sitting in that theatre and realising that Puss was having a literal panic attack thinking he was going to die hit a nerve I did not expect walking into that movie...
god you're right it hit so hard i literally started crying... I panic so much of death and have anxiety myself so seeing a character i GREW up with deal with it as well... just wow. Amazing movie.
I'm actually glad that I have accepted death this early in life. I assure you that you'll start appreciating the moment the more you start accept your inevitable fate.
I used to be scared of death but while studying religions, what stuck out to me most is while most religions tell you to do a bunch of stuff to get into heaven, Christianity actually teaches that someone actually did all the stuff so you can get to heaven and all we need is to have faith in him.
@@t-army4196 I actually liked the first one and thought it was underrated AF. But this movie surpassed it BY FAR. Like EXTREMELY BY FAR. Everything is better this movie.
Yeaa I feel the same, something deep down is telling me this is better than shrek 2 but I always thing it's just on the same level of great brilliance with shrek 2
I disagree about the retirement home part, I just really enjoyed puss acting like a normal cat hehe But also it’s fitting narratively, since that whole part is about him giving up his adventures and the excitement and settling for tedium and normalcy. The fact that that scene made some people a little bored meant we were feeling the same way puss was feeling during that time
Yes! I particularly love how they used the repetition in it: it's boring because they're repeating the same actions, and they're repeating the same actions because Puss now has a mind numbingly boring routine, one that will keep him safe from Death, sure, but one that's certainly not really living
The dog is impressive. He is an incredibly annoying character that is not at all annoying. He is supposed to be obnoxious but you can understand and respect it so there is no irritation. It’s genius
Hope to see his very earnest portrayal of an overbearing but supportive friend energy bounce off of Donkey, considering that's where Donkey started before becoming way over the top
The messages in the movie about dealing with mortality, not running from past trauma, and learning to value family, was really really something that I needed when I saw it last night. My dad died recently, and I've been facing down the barrel of trauma from other things that have happened at this time of the year in previous years. And it's been so overwhelming. This movie really helped me find some comfort with it all. And I am not disappointed at all by it.

dreamworks really said "we're gonna give you a sympathetic villain, an irredeemable villain, and a terrifyingly efficient antagonist" (i consider Death as only an antagonist because he was just doing his job + he had a very valid reason to try and take Puss' last life early)
Honestly, my favourite part was Death. It's such a breath of fresh air to have a villain be an actual threat to the heroes, to have the villain traumatize and scar the heroes just by showing up, rather than have the heroes mock and prank them for the sake of comedy. It legit spooked me every time Death showed up, calmly whistling his tune as he stalked Puss.
It is quite a nice variety to have these types of villains indeed. Unfortunately, that is what Disney is allergic to after I watched this film, they had all their evil villains from their classic era yet today they are afraid to bring them back once in a while if you've noticed their rehashes of them are either misunderstood or anti-hero, lots of their own movies today never even have villains, antagonists yes but not straight on villains or just having it be characters that are red herrings and merely had poor communication type antagonists. That is what I loved most about this movie and Dreamworks in general, they are a bit more realistic and show in the real world there is evil and evil does not care about ppl and thrives on the suffering of others and disregards lives which is what they displayed nicely in Jack Thorne embracing all his villainy while having Goldilocks be his foil to a more anti-villain type. I like when movies go all out with those types of villains because having just one of anything all the time is just boring which is why Disney sucks in the department of writing real villains and making the same "misunderstood character or poor communication in the main characters". I hate to say this but even a twist villain from them would not be bad at this point so as long as they have them go all out :/
This was something I really liked about Grimmel in HTTYD 3. Say what you want about how lackluster his motivations are, but the fact that he scared a whole village into packing up and leaving out of fear for their lives was really nice.
Not that I was glad Puss had a panic attack, but you could literally feel his anxiousness and fear as Death edged closer and closer to him. I loved the addition of Puss’ heart rate and ringing in the ears
this is one of dreamworks’ most mature movies. this movie has mild curses, really dark themes, a bit of blood, emotional moments, etc. this is the most unique movie they have made in a long time and it fits into my personal top 5 best dreamworks movies. i cannot wait for the future of this studio they have really outdone themselves this time. 👏
@@pocketmarcy6990 God to hear Puss in Boots just candidly say "what the fuck?!" after almost being burned by a phoenix would be cinema. Also how they would devise what shit perrito actually said to the bears.
pretty much another example of something for kids being more mature than adult animation. The scene where the dog helped Puss to calm down, just wow, never thought to see something like this in an animated movie again.
One detail I love about this movie is how when Death says that he was there when Puss lost a life, he isn’t lying. At 5:48, when Puss was fighting the giant which ultimately lead to one of his deaths, you can SEE Death in the top left corner behind the crowd.
Things Puss and Spiververse have in common 1: Animating characters on 2's with background on 1's for effect 2: A villain who's size and shape is that of two full-size refrigerators strapped together under an expensive suit.
"Into the Spider-verse" is the single best thing to happen to 3d animated films since Toy Story. Seriously, these new films trying to capture that hand-drawn aesthetic have been remarkably beautiful and much better than the "realistic as possible" march since the beginning.
AND upping their game in the story department too! Like they're putting so much more ambition into their work, not just the animation but across the whole board! It is so insanely refreshing to see, especially for projects that'd otherwise be very minor like a spinoff series sequel like this!

I felt similar about how long Puss stayed in "retirement", but I think it was important because it emphasized how humbled and absolutely terrified he was after his encounter with Death. His character went in the complete opposite direction, and this was after he didn't even take the doctor seriously after it was revealed he had died and was on his last life. It shook him to his core, and it turned this cat who recklessly wasted 8 lives and was in no way ready to change, into one suddenly ok with living a life of boringness and mediocrity after just one scene.

This movie portrayed the three types of antagonists so perfectly A broken/confused antagonist- Goldilocks You actually understand her motives, and it becomes satisfying to see her arc close in this movie, finally accepting her bear family as her real one. She's the only antagonist with an arc in this movie, and it was executed rather greatly. A mustache twirling villain- Jack Horner He's literally evil for the sake of evil, and it's always fun to watch when done right An antihero- Death He isn't good, but not evil either, sure he toys with puss' fear, but it's more out of cockiness than anything really, and despite being overconfident, he actually makes things fair for puss, pushing him to at least die fighting instead of being a pus.., and he actually has a personality, outside of being the grim reaper of this movie, regretting taunting and toying with puss whilst trying to kill him.
I drew a comparison to Ratatouille here. Jack Horner is like Skinner, the more traditional bad guy. Death is like Ego, the imposing threat who steps back at the end.
5:48 you can see Death watching Puss fighting the giant at the back of the crowd in the dark alley way. Looks like it really is true that he's there in Puss's every death.

Its funny how Dreamworks has been making a comeback with The Bad Guys and this movie. Bringing new colour and life to animation, while making some decently great for people to watch. Unlike what Disney and Pixar have been doing by making some extremely generic films that were forgotten pretty quickly
DreamWorks has improved a lot in their animation ever since The Bad Guys. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish getting that same treatment was seriously needed for everyone. As far as anything, this is a good sign for DreamWorks of their future movies.
The next DreamWorks movie is Meet The Gillmans releasing next summer and looks to be the biggest project the studio has ever done in it's history due to it's super ultra secret status at the company, literally there's no official word from DreamWorks to this day and it comes out in 6/7 MONTHS!!!!!!!!
@@trepson4258 That is correct. There was an interview with the manager of Universal Pictures International Italy and he mentioned that Gilmans is coming in the summer. Can't wait for it! I'm so excited about it!
What i love about Dreamworks more than Disney is that each movie has a unique different art style. Majority of them are 3D animation, but you can clearly tell the difference between them, where in modern Disney majority of characters look the same.
i disagree. Improvement is different from different. I would absolutely not rate the HTTYD films any lower just because they go for realism. DW always excelled at animation.
I don't know if this is rude or not. But I really like the fact that Patrick at least had this beautiful movie to watch with his brother before he died. I still cannot believe that such a tragedy happened to you and to the people you love James.
I never understood how everyone unanimously said “it’s so good you have to watch it” word for word, until I left the theatre and instantly said that to someone I knew hadn’t seen it. It’s like a spell.
I understand now. I just typed this 2 my friend since yesterday they asked me 2 tell them about the movie after i watch it today. I love telling spoilers (when ppl are ok with it) but this time i refuse 2 explain a SINGLE thing
The wolf is phenomenal as a character. I love how he's not even a character but just death in nature and only looks for the people who are not taking life seriously.
In the first half of the movie, I was starting to think they'd given Puss too much plot armor, because they established early on how dangerous the wolf was, and yet it seemed like Puss could always get away from him without being chased down, even though he always seemed one step ahead of Puss. But when it turned out he was death, and he was angry at Puss for not taking him seriously and being so cavalier with his own life, it all made sense. He doesn't chase after Puss and try to kill him if he runs away, because running away means that Puss IS afraid of death. It's also why when Puss is disarmed, he doesn't simply kill him, he tells him to pick his sword back up. He doesn't want to kill Puss without Puss being the one to put himself in danger because of his own ego and hubris.
So I’m going to blame this on the fact by chance I watched a series of vids on how to beat the traps in Saw, but now I’m both intrigued and horrified at the similarity. Granted, Death is verified on fairy tale Twitter for the job, graduated murder academy with full As, and not a grim reaper wannabe like John Kramer

I believe what makes this movie great, is that is geared towards audiences of almost all ages. Kids can find something to enjoy, and adults can enjoy it while also understanding the deeper meaning.
I really appreciated how the conflict between the bears and Goldi pans out when they find out her wish is for a “real” family. It would’ve been so easy to have them go “well fine if you want to live life without us then you can get this wish without us” and then she has to get to the star alone and then they show up to save her when she’s in trouble, which is what makes her realize they _are_ her real family…but no. They decide to keep helping her because they love her and it’s what would make her happy, which is SO much more heart-wrenching, and it makes her decision to abandon her opportunity to make the wish to save Baby feel that much more genuine and earned. I do wish a note of emphasis on Baby’s digs at her for being an adopted orphan and not a bear was included to help make her feelings of not belonging with them that little bit more empathetic, but I can live without that because her decision to stay with them still feels more organic the way they did it than it would’ve otherwise- it’s a realization she comes to in a moment of abandoning her own selfishness rather than in a moment of her being saved in spite of that selfishness.
I love the representation of puss's first ever experience with fear and how it sends him into a panic attack. I also really like how they accurately portrayed how a therapy dog helps it's owner.
Seeing characters actually dying in this movie in my opinion really served the story. It really made the threat of death real. You can see how witnessing others people dying in an instant affects Puss, and it makes Death scarier
I appreciated that. I actually got worried when Baby bear almost got sucked into the Force field because they established early on that characters could actually die at any second
Honestly, I loved how they built up Goldilocks’s conflict with her family. It’s subtly built up with her trying to communicate with her family, but failing as they don’t listen to her at times, culminating in the scene where Goldilocks confessed that she wants a real human family, emphasizing how she feels disconnected because of her being human and them being bears. And the Three Bears understands this, choosing to put their own wants to the side for her. I love how this movie isn’t just mature from a subject matter level, but on a storytelling level, giving us clues on what Goldi truly wants rather than constantly shoving it into our face. EDIT: Holy crap, I didn't think this would get a lotta likes! Thanks guys.
Shrek 3……or the non canon one…..also did this. And I also love how they didn’t put Jack Horner in the trailer……..it’s as if they wanted it to be a surprise……
Another thing I like about this movie, is how during the cave of lost souls moment, instead of puss agreeing with his past lives and going after the treasure by himself, he actually grows as a character and decides against it, but is seen as betraying his friends due to death chasing him
Another cool thing I loved about the climax of their family argument, where after Goldi confesses that she didn’t expect to stay with the bears forever, the scene showcases their disparity. Goldi’s back is shined upon by the light of the wishing star, separated and looking down upon the bears and the bears are below, looking up on her
Bonus points: There were suggestions in the movie regarding statements such as 'To find your wish adjust your view, what you seek may be right in front of you' (scene where Goldilocks and the Three Bears reach the projection of their cabin in the Nostalgic Pines). In our pursuit for one thing, we neglect what we already have, and maybe, just maybe, we didn't even need the search all along. - Indecisiveness due to mortality? Puss learned to use his last life to the max. - A person to trust? Kitty found it, with Puss' will finally being consolidated. - Family? Goldilocks had it, feeling great chemistry with the bears and now off to greener greens with a slightly more legitimate business. I loved it, man. Despite somewhat seeing how things would end, revisiting it was just right... hahhhh.
I just watched this video yesterday and it came in a shock when I opened twitter and saw the news about the car crash. I will be praying for you, and I am extremely sorry for your loss. Get well fast, please.
It's so good, like genuinely I have never seen a movie that made me feel so many emotions at once. Excited, happy, terrified, tense, and sad. First time I've cried in theatres.
I hard disagree with your point about Goldi's plot only being revealed and resolved in the very end of the movie. My cousin and I went to see it in theaters and we actually both realized what Goldi's wish was gonna be when we saw her version of the map (although I did watch a dubbed version so it might be more obvious in my language than in the original). From then on out, every scene with her and the bear family was a stab because of how much they clearly loved her, and the resolution of that conflict made us both cry. Such wonderful, subtle writing - which is crazy considering this is a kid's film.
I agree with you there and would like to point out how Goldie repeatedly makes expressions that convey a sense of guilt whenever the family and/or the wish get brought up and she has to think about what she intends to wish for.
I think it's just a matter of not expecting Goldi to really *have* a subplot, like the first time I watched the movie I missed these clues and found their plotline kind of a drag. But on rewatch knowing what they were doing with her encouraged me to actually pay attention during their scenes and I was way more invested in that part of the movies plot
yea like it was so obvious from the jump. I felt bad for my friend I was sitting next to because the moment she hesitated to her mom the first time about telling her secret wish, I guessed it on the money. but I loved their story line even if it was predictable.
At first when I saw the ads for it, I was genuinely put off because of how unfunny the trailer was. I was seriously thinking that it was just gonna be another dumb baby movie. But no. Not at all. The way this movie nearly moved me to tears. I also love how they keep it real with the audience, not making it too childish to the point the adult audience can't really enjoy it. I love some of the crude humor and the actually violent fighting scenes. I cannot even begin to explain how much I loved the death character. Seeing Puss be this sort of crime fighting vigilante badass actually being genuinely afraid felt so real. This was his last life, and all his anxiety was starting to catch up to him. That's just so real. When his heart was racing and he barely could move because he was so frightened, like he was having a panic attack, it just really puts you in the moment. I can't explain how much I love it when people deep dive into masculine, badass warriors and show how deeply they are truly hurting or just afraid on the inside and finally have to experience vulnerability, to the point they want to run away from it all instead of fight. Fear is a conflicting thing, but it's real. The way Puss' hair stands on its ends, and how you can hear his heart pounding rhythmically in the back, it was truly great. I love seeing people being struck with serious fear and anxiety, it's always very interesting. They made death so menacing here, with those dark blood red eyes, and tall stature. It almost makes you feel like you are Puss. And in the end, he's just a cat that's getting older. And he's on his last life, it's all so thrilling. I just adored this movie sm.
reminds me of when hunger games first came out. everyone would do the mockingjay whistle in the hallways at my school to see who would respond with their own
My mother hates animation for Hollywood's fault, but she liked Spiderman into the spiderverse and most important, she liked Shrek, so I was sure this movie was for her, and I was right because every single time the death appeared she said "Oh No" and it's not usual that she says that for a villain's appear in an animated movie.
someone said that if this had been a disney movie they 100% would've made perrito a twist villain and it made me appreciate this film 10x more than i already did
Considering the first film already had a twist villain (the flashback with Humpty in a catsuit was so funny, shame that Death didn't have a similar gag) Perrito being one would be a huge disappointment.
The Last Wish is just incredible. I just love the character of Death. He doesn't HATE Puss, he hates how he wasted his lives. He's not a bad guy, just an anti-hero
he was definitely the bad guy lol (you better not bring up that "oH hE wAs JuSt DoInG hIs JoB" argument I keep seeing), and he definitely HATED puss. he practically even admits it in the final scene: the only reason he let puss go is because the cat he hated so much just wasn't there any more.
@@firewall5189 i'd disagree. Death hated being cheated and mocked constantly by the legend who laughed in the face of death. So when Puss became humbled and accepting of his mortality, why would he be mad. He even says they will meet again so why rush it, Death has eternity
No, Death is a villain, not an anti-hero. Here are the reasons why: Attempted murder Psychological abuse Stalking Destruction of property Animal cruelty Assault
@@user-jk6iu6lf6b he did all that because (if you read my comment) he hated how Puss wasted his lives and how Puss in Boots 'laughs in the face of Death'. He wants to show Puss that wasting his 8 lives was a bad decision and to not be so ignorant
Clone Wars Season 3 video is going to be sad :( I wonder if James will continue the retrospective, if he doesn’t, I respect that, since it was intended to be his and Patrick’s thing
So fucking true, every time after his first bout with Puss completly flips the mood from whatever is happening to "OH *SHIT*" without fail. Absolute masterclass on making not just a good villain, its a masterclass on making an absolute MANACE of a character.
I love the scores they gave death. Our body instinctively syncs our heart rate to the music we listen to- so the irregular drum beats really force us to feel the panic Puss feels. It illustrates a panic attack so well- not just what it looks like, but how it feels. The score during the final fight is also amazing at portraying fear turning into bravery
Seriously, this was one of the best animated films ive ever seen--multiple character arcs handled beautifully (Goldilocks' family being inspired by Perrito's optimism) and the final scene where Puss fought against Death made me realize that he didn't *want* to kill Puss, he just wanted him to *value the last life he has!* Which is a lot better than just having a villain that simply wants to get rid of the protagonist, imo.
[SPOILER] I really loved when Death looks him in the eyes, and Puss glares back, and he knows that Puss has grown as a person and isn't the same cat he was at the start. And after that he doesn't even want to kill him anymore It was an awesome moment
Oh he definitely wants to kill Puss. But not the changed Puss. At first I thought he wants him to value the last life too but he said it himself, he wants to kill someone who got way to their head and thinks they are immortal. Like he does this to have some thrill in his life (heh) but now the hunt is not fun anymore.
It was very deep and great character development, like he said he’d come back eventually but finally sees that Puss values his last life enough to live it better
I love the twist that it wasn't the "big bad wolf" character you find in so many fairytales. The three little pigs, little red riding hood, the seven goats, the boy who cried wolf. This wolf character isnt _that_ wolf. It's someone so much worse. So much more powerful. It is Death himself. This is basically Far Far Aways' version of Hades. So Puss was practically battling an actual God. And that for me makes Death so much scarier and so much more intimidating and one of the best crafted character in animation movie history.
This movie really blew me away, I was even tearing up at a few points. I legit might go watch it again, I'm really excited to see where the Shrek franchise goes from here.
Remember Dreamworks is all over the place in terms of quality seriously how did they go from making Prince of Egypt a masterpiece of an animated movie to Boss Baby and Troll, How did they make Shark Tale and Shrek on the same year despite the level of quality, Honestly I hope this means a good sign for Dreamworks
@@justsomeguywholovesberserk6375 ok but this year they made 2 surprisingly excellent movies and no bad movies so it could mean something, even if it didnt that wouldnt mean that they fell hard because dreamqorks is known for their mixed catalogue of movies and how different in tone they are
We’re going back in time, to December 2022 to make sure that puss in boots 2 the last wish makes enough money for dreamworks to continue making similar movies Edit: btw, where would you place this movie in your dreamworks ranking?
THATS RIGHT we’re going back in time to december 2022 to make sure that puss in boots 2 the last wish makes enough money for dreamworks to continue making similar movies
The part where perico calmed boots down by laying his head on boot’s stomach made me tear up, it was so cute and as someone who personally deals with panic attacks it felt personal
just saw this movie... cried as well. I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks so i understand. Today i was having my own mental health issues and seeing them show it REALISTICALLY and SERIOUSLY hit hard. This movie doesn't dumb down anything or censor but have it be literal PTSD. Thats why i love this movie and probably the best movie ive seen for a long time (cough disney). I'm so glad i went to watch it since i grew up on this. Still crying just because im so glad this movie didn't fail its potential, but exceeded it
it's similar to frame shots in anime from the 90's like Berserk 1997 shots of Guts's enraged face or the shots of the eclipse it is used for stylistic style and it is done to perfection
it makes it feel like an animated comic book. that's what makes it perfect for spider-verse, but it's surprisingly perfect for this film too. I can imagine a puss in boots comic book with intense fight scenes like these!
Something I noticed after you mentioned how the dog is super trusting, it made me realize that the dog has the counter positive traits to puss and kitty’s negative traits/character flaws which makes me like the dog more.
Watching this now adds a whole new perspective to the whole death theme. Im so sorry for your loss and I hope you are surrounded by love and caring right now. We’ll always be here for you whenever you need us.
It’s actually a really haunting thought to consider this would’ve been one of the last movies James and Patrick watched together. I pray that God may help James cope with the core lessons of this movie, and that Patrick and Chris are in a better place 😔🙏
Probably the biggest thing that makes Death Wolf such a good villain is because they don't make any jokes, in a par or a sub-par movie they probably would have made some tedious joke where puss is throwing balls of paper at him he flinches a little before continuing and repeat that for a tedious sub-par joke that ruins the tense moment if done poorly although I'd argue there are no bad ideas just bad execution. Anyway they didn't make any jokes with Death Wolf to my memory which definitely helps Reinforce the grim tone of his scenes, honestly I loved the movie
Wellll he does angrily rant to himself in Spanish after the climax, but that is pretty funny and it's after the serious drama part is over so it works.
@@archdruidbookwalter951 I think it works because of how sparing the jokes are and they are not made to make Death look pathetic, the first few visual comedic moments are there to make fun puss and make Death look stronger, and the ones in the final fight are not unnecessarily drawn out
There are some good and funny scenes like him acting like a fan in his first scene, him mocking his past lives, him ranting in the end were all hilarious
Spoilers for the movie: I like how the villain from the sequel are improved version of what the villain from the first puss and boots movies were. Jack and Jill were evil just to be evil with no tragic backstory making them that way, the goose was a force of nature with it literally being an animal with one goal where it couldn’t be stopped, and humpty was sort of a sympathetic character with his grudge against puss being because humpty in his eyes was betrayed by the one person he cared about. The villains from the sequel each fit in these three categories. Jack Horner being the evil just to be evil villain but he’s more comedic then Jack and Jill, big bad wolf being the force nature villain since he is literal death but the twist is he also holds a grudge against puss, and goldi being the sympathetic antagonist with her goal being that she wants a family.
Please please please do your best in the coming days. I cannot imagine the pain you've going through, but I know you have people you love who are still with you, so keep fighting... I'm sorry you've had to deal with this pain.
Having watched this today, I can agree: IT IS AS GOOD AS EVERYONE SAYS IT IS! Seriously don't be afraid to go watch this because "kids movie." Not only is that a poor reason, but I kinda forgot that DreamWorks isn't Disney after not seeing one of their movies for so long, and WOW they don't hold back. There's swearing, blood, genuine terror, abuse, and yet it all still manages to be wholesome and family friendly. The last time I saw a movie with such dark topics that also managed to be super family friendly was The Incredibles, and comparing ANYTHING to that movie is the highest of praise. Seriously, go watch it.
My dog died recently, she was so happy and positive all the time and she helped me get better through my depression last year. I bawled my eyes out when Perrito helped Puss calm down and how he stayed so positive through all, his dialogue about life really broke me. I hope this film has an impact on adoption, sometimes people pass adopting dogs they deem “ugly” when they can literally change your life for the better, I would give anything to have my dog lay on my lap just once more.

Dude I felt the same way about Perrito. After watching the trailer and first few mins of the film I thought he was going to be an annoying character; but nope he was so endearing and cute making him definitely my favorite part of the movie. Like the moment were he puts his head on Puss's lap to calm him down, that genuinely made me shed a tear. First because it reminded me of my dog since he does that when he sees me tired, and second because without any dialogue managed to develop the relationship between two main characters. Loved the movie, best film DreamWorks has produced in a good while.
I went to see it yesterday, with zero expectations, I didn't even see the trailer I just went because a friend invite me and I was pleasantly surprised It was actually pretty good, I haven't seen any sherk films since the third one left a bad taste on my mouth but I'm happy that they are getting back on the right track
Please dear internet stranger, I highly, highly recommend you to watch Shrek 4. I also did exactly the same as you, after watching Shrek 3 I was so disappointed in the saga that I didn't give Shrek 4 a chance in all these years, and it took 12 years for me to just see it last week. This was because I wanted to see the Shrek saga again (Plus Puss in Boots) and this time in its entirety, before seeing The Last Wish, and boy, did I really regret not seeing Shrek 4 sooner. It's not better than Shrek 2, but it's very close, especially because it takes seriously the moments that require seriousness and reflection, I loved that. I also discovered a very nice song that appeared in the movie and even appears in the credits, it's called Darling I Do 😊
@@valentinaespinoza8526 another fellow internet stranger here, I already knew that Shrek 4 was a masterpiece but I didnt notice the song you mention, and its an absolute banger so thank you and thank the crab man for this opportunity
Shrek 4 is better than the other 2 sequels, and by some measures, even the first movie itself. You can't let that be the only one you haven't seen. It would be a tragedy.
it was super touching to see panic attacks represented in this movie as someone who has struggled with them in the past. it made me feel so seen and it warmed my heart to see these struggles represented in a popular character.
I was honestly surprised to see Puss have a panic attack and/or in general even see one in a family animated movie. However, that's why I love the film. It handled and represented anxiety (and his panic attack) so well. That scene honestly with Puss's panic attack made my eyes water.
As someone who has severe anxiety and depression, I don't get why people make such a big deal over seeing things "represented" on screen. It doesn't make me feel any better or "seen." Like, not seeing someone else go through it in no way invalidates me or anyone else.
6:17 I'd say the cat home section was decent as well Because it serves two purposes 1. Introducing Perrito as the new ally 2. Showing how Puss simply can't go for this life, as it's too different and in a way a coward way of living for him
I love that this movie has an antagonist for everyone.
Goldi as the sympathetic antagonist.
Jack as the pure evil antagonist.
The Wolf as the force-of-nature antagonist.
this is such a great way of looking at it
Kitty is the femme fatale antagonist, if you wanna stretch the definition
@ursidae97 yeah but she's only really an antagonist for her first 5 minutes of screen time. Afterwards, she reluctantly helps Puss and Perito and they slowly form a team together

The scene where Perrito lays on Puss when he’s having a panic attack was so touching.
I know 🥺
I couldn't have the strength nor pride to handle the tears :,(
This movie handles anxiety so damn well. It's shocking how this is a movie for the whole family
I was all like “Aww!” 🥺
Such a nice and lovable side character.🥹
I stopped myself from crying but at the end I absolutely bawled from remembering the three scenes with Perrito and Goldilocks being told that her family was 'just right'.
I love when you expect a lazy cash-grab but end up with a genuinely great movie.

The Lego Movie
I love how they resolved Puss and Softpaw's relationship issues. No unnecessarily dragged out drama, no added ridiculous misunderstanding to make the current problems even worse. It was mentioned in one scene and several scenes later they talked it out.
They just talked it out.
Technically the drama was brought back, but it was natural and really well done. They talked it out, but then Kitty felt betrayed when he saw them, and still ran off alone with the wish, (and it was pretty much betrayal, just not malicious). Especially after she already suggested they could share the wish (which could have just meant she'd let him have it, as long as they stick together)
But yeah, it was really refreshing to see the protagonists just talk it out
That's what The Last Wish does better than most other movies, the 3rd act conflict and misunderstandings barely happened and the characters just talked it out if there was a misunderstanding.
I really like how it was just a simple story about her learning to put trust in puss and her freinds again, that was all she really needed, and they didn't artificially extend it or not give it proper development, it was just a simple lesson that the movie gave time to play out and it worked
And it was fairly reasonable drama that furthered the characters
I belive that things like this is what made it possible for the movie to have so many ,,villains" and stories playing at the same time. They never wasted time trying to make problems worst for extra drama.
My favorite joke:
"Excalibur!! Yeah I couldn't get this rock off it but it's still pretty cool right?" I died on that part 😂
It's even better because he was trying to pull it out of the magical nanny bag in a similar manner to how someone would attempt to pull it out of the rock, having trouble with it at first and finally pulled it out only to reveal it was still stuck in the rock it came with XD
The weapon is actually fucking scary
My favorite one is similar: "Yeah, in the face; why?"
Ohoho, so that’s what they do
@Mikeyboi1225 yeah, people get that wrong all the time.
I cannot describe to you how genuinely scared I got hearing a person slowly whistling in the AMC theater bathroom after the movie ended
Same
Same.
Even worse if your at a gas station a hour after the movie ended
It made me think of Shadow the hooded fella from FF6 with his lil pupper & made me a teensy less scared
BRO I WHISTLED IT TO LIKE A 6 YEAR OLD AND NO RESPONSE!!!
I kind of rolled my eyes and was like, here comes the contrived third act conflict, but it never came and I was pleasantly surprised
And the one time there is a missunderstanding, it's not just some dumb situation that could have been perfectly avoided if the character took the time to explain it. The whole thing was too bizarre to believe, and Puss was just too distraught to be able to explain it in detail, or realize how his words could've been missinterpreted.
"When you said you were being followed by death, I thought you were just being dramatic." xD

How to make your comic relief a strong character:
This is why I liked Perrito better than Donkey. Similar concept, better execution.
And not in just a subject matter way, but in a presenting way. I love how this movie tackles masculinity.
As of now it’s 134 million in the box office. It’s passed it’s budget by 44 million.
right? it deserves to surpase avatar 2 lol
Man why can’t you make reviews, I love how you worded this
@@mr.azizsshitposts I'm Polish.
@@bogonzomdI think less satisfying, but acceptable for Death. He did enjoy the hunt Puss gave him
The fun thing is that everyone kinda got their wish despite not making one.

My slight issue was that Kitty could totally trust Perrito, so she did have someone she could trust.
I loved when Death asked Puss if all his lives flashed before his lives and he says just one
Before his eyes*
“What’s the matter? Lives flashing before your eyes?”
“No. Just one.”
Even more amazing when you realized the life that flashed before his eyes were just his last one. When he heads up to answer Death, his hat uncovers Kitty and Perrito behind.
Shit i just realized
Look at goldilock's wish and the path that was given to her on its own.
It makes me wonder what Big Jack Horner's map and path would have looked like.
interesting
Probably just obstacles to straight up kill him
There was so much characterization and set ups in each path that the level of detail is staggering. Even Perrito's "joke path" is about him just wanting friendship and basically just coming up with ways for him, Puss and Kitty to bond with each other.
Jack's path would probably just try to kill him in ironic ways since he wasn't in a character-development mood
Just a correction, kitty got the path of loneliness because she couldn’t trust anyone and it would be her confronting her fear of being alone while puss got the cave of lost souls (his past lives)

Puss in the forest having a full panic attack only to be calmed by one of the previously established side characters really hit me hard. Contemporary references can be pretty good when done right tho. Like with all jokes and humor, it’s all in the execution. When done right it can be really great, contemporary or not

"Shhh don't tell"
Death is not the villain. He is an antagonist. The villain is Jack Horner.

@@coomslayer6996theyre in the same universe
This movie felt like a passion project, something the animators WANTED to make
*_(Mild spoilers for the movie)_* I really like how kitty's mask being off or on shows how she feels towards everyone around her. Putting it back on right before reaching the wishing star and, from what I remember, taking it off when (after*) Puss was fighting death was a nice touch.
Definitely. There were a lot of small details like that. It was clear to me that the people who worked on this project had a lot of passion for it (or at least a lot of them did.)
You’re the first comment I’ve found to call out Kitty’s mask - I’m glad you noticed! I worked on this movie and liked that touch too when it was added. *also, Kitty takes her mask off after Puss’ fight with Death 😉

Editorial is really a fascinating part of the animation process where everything from different departments comes together. From cutting together the first storyboards to dropping in the final lighting shots, and even doing quality checks on the prints made for theatrical release, we really get to see and take part in the story developing overtime. It was an honor to help bring Joel and Januel’s vision to the screen, who despite a pandemic and other challenges the production faced managed to keep their crew going and remained two of the nicest people on the planet to work with!
I'm hoping it gets an academy award
It better. Not some dumb stuff like Lightyear or Strange World, Academy. Puss in Boots forever!

It will either go to Pinocchio or, because it's Pixar, to Lightyear. But yeah, best animated movie of the year
The wolf actually makes you feel genuine fear it was directed so well. And I was surprised when they actually showed blood. This movie is awesome and it's not just geared toward kids but adults and the people who grew up with the Shrek franchise who are now older.
The last time Dreamworks used blood was Road To El Dorado back in early 2000s. This Puss In Boots sequel make me want to see more of dark fantasy Kids film.

And it also served a dark comedy purpose watching jack horner casually killing all his minions and watching them die
@@usernamepersonperson4376 "C´mon, you walked into that one!"
I appreciated that. I actually got worried when Baby bear almost got sucked into the Force field because they established early on that characters could actually die at any second
@@usernamepersonperson4376 i mean, you know what they say

Despite somewhat seeing how things would end, revisiting it was just right... hahhhh.

*My brother and I
@@cristhianmlr you're not that guy.
Agree, even with the English version
became crystal clear what her wish (and thus conflict) was going to be the moment the house showed up imo lol

@@nightcoremetal2518 Why would people want that dumb gag for an Amazing and terrifying character such as Death

Absolutely
Every time he shows up I get chills
At the movies I went to, about 2 kids cried and had to be taken out of the theater bc of how scary he was LOL
[SPOILER]
I really loved when Death looks him in the eyes, and Puss glares back, and he knows that Puss has grown as a person and isn't the same cat he was at the start. And after that he doesn't even want to kill him anymore
It was an awesome moment
Oh he definitely wants to kill Puss. But not the changed Puss. At first I thought he wants him to value the last life too but he said it himself, he wants to kill someone who got way to their head and thinks they are immortal.
Like he does this to have some thrill in his life (heh) but now the hunt is not fun anymore.
@@weedweeb9211 It feels Death wants to kill gods, not mortals. Haha.

@@LukiKruki mortals who believe themselves to be gods, more like
I love the twist that it wasn't the "big bad wolf" character you find in so many fairytales.
Even worse, Puss wasn't fighting a god, he was fighting a concept.
