Not sure what those fish are, but to me they don’t look like yellowtail.. hard to see but the tail doesn’t look like it’s forked. Also, the swimming motion is more “s” like than a yellowtail.. in my humble opinion. Loved reading your article though. Would love to catch a so cal yellow from the beach!
You don’t think you just haven’t gotten enough bites to be confident while using it? Ik a lot of guys who use surface irons as their go to in rough conditions
@@IEatMyCatch lol.. I just think it doesn't work nearly as well as many other lures, regardless.. and for darn certain it's not a very versatile lure either..
I saw so much over at mission bay jetty honestly don’t know if it is a yellow tail or mullet. But for these past few weeks if you walk all the way down point medanos jetty you could literally see huge schools of them roaming around the whole jetty chasing down the minnows
looks like a rat yellow. too thick to be a dorado and mullet wouldn't chase a iron like that

We’ll never know anyways😂
But thanks! Very much appreciate the kind words. I think it’s doable and we know it happens.
@@surffishinginsocal agreed! Would be cool to figure out a fairly consistent pattern of targeting them
The shape of the tail looks like a dorado.
Could have been🤷♂️
Smelt are cool...
🤷♂️ my guess is either YT or mullet. Can’t be sure though
There are lots of big mullet in the surf… possibly, I heard they have caught yellowtail from the PB (crystal) pier
hahaha.. surface iron sucks.. honestly.. lol

@@IEatMyCatch from the boats when they are chummed up is one thing... when the water if full of bait it's a whole different gig..

Fishing is weird as life. What doesn't works for you it works for others.
