My week has been made! No, my whole month! A video from Ronald and Mads, two of my most favorite people anywhere! You can’t imagine how much you lift my spirits. I’m an old, disabled shut-in who life left behind. People like you make it bearable! Much much love to both of you! PS. I live in Texas. Last winter when my housemates cranked the heat way up because God forbid was below 60° outside, I closed my bedroom door and my vent and opened my window all night. It was great until we got a few nights in a row of 30 to 40°. Then I finally had enough and shut my window. But I still left my vent closed.
Where I was brought up noone knew anything about anybody,so when I moved to a small seaside town I was really shocked because everybody wanted to know everything. And everything you do gets across town within hours,you cant be rude about anyone because a lot of them are related to each other. It took me years to stop feeling harrassed by the questioning,perfect strangers saying"you dont work in the supermarket now do you" or"I heard about your illness I'm sorry"or"I heard you want a cat. Have you asked Diane?" "Hi,Penny". And you say hi and dont have a clue who it is. But if you want something you just tell a few people and sooner or later someone you never heard of will offer a solution. I have had car lifts off people I never met and never saw again.

Number 3 .. in Australia it's very typical for people to answer a question with 'yeah, nah', same thing, totally oblique way way of answering any direct question. I love it.
My grandmother used to address little silences with, "Na ja" which seems to translate to "Anyway, oh well"
yeah but in Australia I find that yeah nah means no, and nah yeah means yes.
here in Norway, we also say "ja, nei" and "nei, ja" just as in Australia, but who knows what we mean by it, I don't think even the person uttering the words know sometimes.
@Nabium Here, people sometimes end sentences with "yeah" when they don't fully complete a thought. I *think* it means they're assuming you (the listener) knows how the story ends.

Hmm. What is taboo in my nation? ( USA) To be honest, it depends on where in the US you are. The states and even areas within the same state vary so much.
We must be Norwegian. I've worked with the same people for a decade and I couldn't tell you which ones got married, are married, are single, or got divorced in that time. I've never heard of anyone talking about their parents, partners, or kids. I've never been invited to anyone's home. I've seen pictures of their new cars or boats or had them tell me what they did on vacation. No one even has photos on their desks.
We have our own wonky social customs. When someone asks how are you the answer is always good or people think you are strange.
So what do you possibly talk about then??

Absolutely love you guys and never miss a video. My sister was an exchange student to Norway in the 60s, she went back as an elementary school teacher for a year, and has visited 2 or 3 other times. To say she enjoyed her time in Norway is an understatement. I "introduced" your videos to her and she in turn has brought your videos to the attention of several friends. I am sorry I never went to visit her while she was in Norway.
My Norwegian friends are all very down to earth, intelligent, and nice people all around. It's on my bucket list to visit them in Norway next summer.

It’s always a good idea to learn the language of the country you’re visiting or living in. It shows respect for the culture and people around you. Norwegian is a unique language with some interesting features, such as the use of “innpust” (breathing in) to indicate yes or no. If your girlfriend says “ja” (yes) on an innpust, it means she’s serious and you should expect an explanation soon.
I know the rudimentary language.

I'm allergic to night air, so have to have climate control to sleep w/o getting sick. Headed to Arizona, HOT, so will have to have some adjustment in the hotel room!---I'm a Hospice nurse, just retired Sunday. Dying & death is something I dealt with on multiple levels over 52 1/2 years, so I know about helping patients/loved ones, staff/caregivers deal with saying Good-bye. Never easy.---Religion, coming from a small town in North Dakota, everyone knew what church you went to, so never needed to ask! And the subject never came up when I lived in big city Albuquerque!

There are lots of similarities between Norway and the UK it seems. It’s mostly middle class people, especially the English, who tend to keep their curtains open a lot. Not as much as Norwegians though. No naked people on view. If someone did that regularly they could get themselves arrested. We also don’t discuss how much we earn. We don’t get money for cans, but we do have recycling collections and bins. We don’t talk about death either, no no no. Backpacks are very popular here too.
Bang on - I don’t miss net curtains but isn’t there another option than just being on full public display? I’ve actually heard people gossip about how so and so at number 49 has had their curtains shut all afternoon, as if it’s something scandalous.
UK taboos, money of course but death is a great one and I’d go further and say anything related to bodily functions or the health of… intimate areas. How many people die because they don’t go to the doctor with an “embarrassing” symptom? Politics to some degree, we do a weird dance around it until we know if other people agree and then we will talk about it.

Thank you Ronald and Mads! We just returned from Norway and found your videos very entertaining, and they prepared us for Norwegian culture. We even took your suggested cable car tour, and my husband tried canned reindeer meatballs which he loved. Our favorite part of the trip was getting to know the locals. We went to a locals bar, and many people struck up conversations with us because they had never seen us before. I enjoyed talking about the differences in our cultures, and social services. I appreciated how direct Norwegians are. Thank you again. I really enjoyed and appreciated your country. I felt so safe there. It's rare as a woman in the USA to be able to hike alone, or go to a concert without having your bag searched. I felt so free in Norway.
Its not rare for a woman to hike solo in USA. My wife hiked every US state alone. She’s72 and still does it , camping very often.

I was cracking up laughing from the very start!
The "nay nay da da" part reminded me of the classic Steam song "Na Na Hey Hey", the song the Chicago White Sox baseball team plays (and all the Sox fans sing) when they win the game.
I live in "helt" Texas and they're pretty strange down here. Apartments have window blinds, although they really should have thermal blackout curtains to keep the light and heat out. They build them way too close together not to have some kind of window covering.
I don't talk about religion, politics, income, or anything else I don't want to discuss with people I don't know well here because there are so many extremists and they all have guns (except me).
You throw your backpack in the car here, and you carry them around everywhere so you have all your stuff with you.

I like curtains and have blackout curtains in my bedroom. I like as dark as possible when I sleep, sounds don't usually bother me as much as light. City lights at night are touch for me.
Employers here in the states don't like it when employees talk about wages, they don't wanna pay people more. It's a big problem.

In Oregon U.S. we are recycling obsessed. We recycle all glass, metal cans and paper. Supposedly plastics, but I am dubious about that. My actual trash is about a third of what I was doing when I didn't live in Oregon. I have a separate larger recycle can that I roll out for pickup, and separate tubs for glass. After spending 20+ years here. When I travel to locations without Oregon recycling it is uncomfortable to throw something like a bottle or can into the trash.

I live in Oregon too. I can confirm that we recycle just like in Norway. In Portland it's not like other parts of the USA. It's more like Helsinki with less vowels and worse hockey. Any person from Scandinavia, Baltic countries or Germany would feel at home.

From the US...Your taboos are pretty much the same as ours. Discussing religion or politics is something you shouldn't do, especially if there are people who don't know you that well, around. There are more interesting things to talk about, anyway. Also, I made myself a maatpake the other day for lunch. Not bad at all!

Recycling! Here in America, we get Five cents, or 1/20th of a dollar. I actually live in a town named Norway! When I first moved to my apartment I did not have curtains for the longest time and I never knew about this..
Norway has the best recycling system in the world. As evidenced by the fact that we recycle 92% of all bottles and cans, the highest number of any country.
Love these videos! Recycling is huge here in North America. My family and I personally, always rinse our cans out as well.
After having lived in Norway for 33 years the language is not a problem, having written essays which were perfectly acceptable at university in Trondheim. (NTNU) I don't have curtains, either. Very difficult making friends here, this seems to be a well known phenomenon.
I agree with you that asking about salary is taboo. Here, asking about marital status/ what you pay for rent/your house can be seen as too intrusive, even though these items are available online. Asking a rancher/farmer how many head of cattle/sheep he owns is the same to them as asking how much money they earn. Draperies are needed here for privacy/security, particularly since long range cameras and drones with caneras are everywhere. If someone asks too many personal questions, they can be viewed as too nosey, or stalkers.
Your habit of open air all winter is admirable, but not done much, anymore. Your children must be taught from an early age to stay away from open windows... Religion and politics are best avoided, and many Americans would not be very forthcoming about being trans/gay, etc. , due to hate crimes. Glad to see you two again, complete with Mads' comments!
And don't ask a Sami how many reindeer he has.

Talking about religion is taboo in Denmark as well. And bragging is considered very off putting - today I even heard some people talking about not wanting to wear new shoes to work as is was too bragging (I personally thought that was taking Jantloven too far)

When working with intrusive busy bodies, it becomes difficult to send them the message to cease and desist. An alternative is to simply shut them out, whenever possible.

I think there are a lot of people here who sleep with open windows but it is not so cold as where you live.

A real taboo in the Netherlands is asking a person how much money he makes, but is also not right to brag about your possessions.
Love this channel. Discovered it when I was preparing to marry my Nowegian boyfriend and move to Stavanger (from London). But, alas, he cheated with a Swede, so that ended. Now with your help, I just day dream that this could have been my home😅. Needless to say he regrets his decision now.
Hi Ronald, nice to see you posting again, love your videos. I watched one yesterday where you were discussing trolls, and peste kommar, etc. you were asking about some of our countries legends and myths. Ii live in Canada, eh. Here we have the european things like vampires, werewolves, and so on, but some of our indigenous (native) people have their versions of scary things, one is known as the 'wendigo', also has other spellings. They are supposedly emancipated beings with severe cannibalistic tendancies, sometimes they are depicted as having deer horns, but not according to the natives, they describe them as being like a skeleton with skin, eyes, etc. They hunger for human flesh, and are never satisfied.We have some Navajo in Canada, (more in the USA), they beieve insomething called the skinwalker, the are evil Navajo wiches (male oe female), that can transform into various animals, most commonly wolves, and can do whatever they want to you. Hope you find this interesting, I have 75% Swedish ancestry, both of my dad's parents were from Smaland (in Sweden) , and my mom's grandparents were from the north of Sweden, I've been to Sweden and am a bit familiar with tomten.

I'm from SMS club! :))) I really missed that yahoo messenger club :P In Romania we tend also to not talk freely bout our faith, but we identify ourselves with the type of religion we have.
I love it--so interesting to learn and so hilarious in presentation.! In my part of the US it is also taboo to ask how much anyone earns. It's also not great to ask how much someone paid for their house or car or similar items. It's rude to ask about marital/partner status, even if someone is wearing a wedding ring. Also rude to ask about someone's religion, but I don't think it's quite as taboo as in Norway. And last one off the top of my head is don't ask detailed questions about someone's health. I'm sure there are more.
