I used to work for young guitar magazine for a few years, and i saw guthrie play like a 100 of differente guitar players... Vai, Satriani, Bumblefoot, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie, etc. But i'm as sure as hell that none of the guitar players i just named, can play like Guthrie Govan. He is the most humble and complete guitar player i've ever heard.

What many people forget when they see or hear Guthrie is that they're not really listening. They're just watching his fingers or trying to imagine how his fingers are executing the mind-boggling licks. They don't think about the ideas and the creativity going though his head and/or the feel and the passion he has in his heart. Guthrie is just so musical.

It is similar to the solos that Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman, and the other jazz greats would come up with on their saxophones. What is going on in their minds? What a gift he gives every time he plays.

From :22 on, it's all Guthrie (no more Jeff Beck style emulation), but here's what has stymied me since this video surfaced: he bends at 1:15 on the C# at the 9th fret, E string and bends to an E note, two octaves higher. I transcribe guitar music for a living, but I, personally, can't produce that E note for the life of me. My job, as a transcriber, is to give others a solution to produce sounds on a chosen instrument---I know that is what Guthrie's physically doing, but I've never been able to produce it.
It may be a matter of distortion, neck length/shape, or string tension, but I applaud Guthrie for using that technique for a melodic purpose within a strict, time-sensitive musical context. His command over the instrument shall reign supreme for decades. He took a chance and won.

I have heard a lot of guitar players, all the greats, even those who are not known by the public, but Guthrie is incomparable to any of them, regardless of genre. The guitar becomes a medium between his mind and the music that comes out. This is what God had in mind when He created musicians.

This guy is an overall winner between every single guitar player, mix of technic with soul and passion for what he does, he doesn't need to play blues to get people to understand what he's feeling, sometimes, is good to listen to a guitar player who can play outside a pentatonic box.

protabs Flynn Salisbury I've just figured it out. He pulls the high e string not just horizontally off the fretboard, but vertically down as well. If you can pull down close enough to the fretboard then the high e will rest on the pickup, which since he has 22 fret humbucker equipped guitar is around where the 24th fret would be. Pull the string down and your humbucker becomes a fret that you can bend on as you please!

Buy this man's album! Guth may not leave a footprint on guitar playing in the way Satch or Vai might (when you turn up late, all the seats at the Pantheon are taken), but it's a long time since either of them has produced an album as good as Erotic Cakes. In fact I can't think of an album by either Satch or Vai that's as consistent as E.C. Every track is killer. This is an album that the combined talents of Satch, Vai and Holdsworth would struggle to produce, it really is that good.

While I don't actively dislike his style, it isn't something I find myself wanting to listen to on a regular basis either.
To clarify, that should not in any way take anything away from him. he's doing what he wants to do because he wants to do it - as music should be. Myself and Daim0th are simple doing the same thing.

I do that all that time. It's more of a trick than anything. All you do is bend the string off the fret board, so it gets pushed to the side of the fret, instead of the top, and that's how that sound is achieved.

+JD0x0 its not that what he did, but how he did it in terms of musical terms and how he blend it melodically with the rest of the phrase. Everyone can do it just like you said, but doing it musically like he did, not everyone can

JD0x0 , not quite. He is pulling the B string off the fretboard at the 10 th position (A) to a E two octaves above! In order to achieve this you have to pull the string( together with the high E string) completely out of the fretboard and behind the neck! Very difficult to do, and he even does it in the middle of a solo in a very musical way! Just insane!

THANK YOU, I find it sad how every one but us finds it impossible to comprehend that.

This man can play all the notes, all the scales and most of the technics and styles in one song.
This is demonstration at 75%. A very good demonstration. Nothing more. I would be interested to see him playing a song with a real band.

I dont want to say to much, becuase these discussions usually don't end that well. I like Guthrie, and Im here to learn good technique; because he is an absolute master. But I also understand why people dont like him (clubsandwedge ect...)Its hard to explain because I dont want to call him crap, becuase he isnt; but when Im looking for the "special" feel of music I look somewhere else. This is something beyond the "wow" factor, something more spiritual. Philosophy behind music is very important.
