I used to work for young guitar magazine for a few years, and i saw guthrie play like a 100 of differente guitar players... Vai, Satriani, Bumblefoot, Paul Gilbert, Yngwie, etc. But i'm as sure as hell that none of the guitar players i just named, can play like Guthrie Govan. He is the most humble and complete guitar player i've ever heard.
What many people forget when they see or hear Guthrie is that they're not really listening. They're just watching his fingers or trying to imagine how his fingers are executing the mind-boggling licks. They don't think about the ideas and the creativity going though his head and/or the feel and the passion he has in his heart. Guthrie is just so musical.
It is similar to the solos that Charlie Parker, Ornette Coleman, and the other jazz greats would come up with on their saxophones. What is going on in their minds? What a gift he gives every time he plays.
Best comment about Guthrie I’ve ever seen. Technique is such a small part of his playing. His note choice and phrasing are out of this world
Oh I can hear the key, chords, and modes... but what I'm thinking about it, "SHIT... why didn't I practice more when I had no responsibilities and could have practiced for 12 hours/day???"
@@KM-jp2wx Yep, that's the joy of Jazz.
The phrasing is guths music is actually insane man. I cant get over it. Beautiful stuff
From :22 on, it's all Guthrie (no more Jeff Beck style emulation), but here's what has stymied me since this video surfaced: he bends at 1:15 on the C# at the 9th fret, E string and bends to an E note, two octaves higher. I transcribe guitar music for a living, but I, personally, can't produce that E note for the life of me. My job, as a transcriber, is to give others a solution to produce sounds on a chosen instrument---I know that is what Guthrie's physically doing, but I've never been able to produce it.
It may be a matter of distortion, neck length/shape, or string tension, but I applaud Guthrie for using that technique for a melodic purpose within a strict, time-sensitive musical context. His command over the instrument shall reign supreme for decades. He took a chance and won.
You get it by bending that string down under the neck. Never seen anyone do that so beautifully in within a musical context.
It's unreal what he does in this short video. That bend and slide is amazing... wow.
...
I really think he is bending the string so far that it come off the neck. Looking at his fingers there, they look like they aren't on the fretboard anymore.
Everyone going WTF at that. lol
Perfect combination of technical ability and musical ability.
sacredgeometry He is literally the best ever.
I have heard a lot of guitar players, all the greats, even those who are not known by the public, but Guthrie is incomparable to any of them, regardless of genre. The guitar becomes a medium between his mind and the music that comes out. This is what God had in mind when He created musicians.
Es el.menos logrado de todas las emulaciones de estilos de guitarristas realizados por este gran guitarrista.
No matter how many times I watch this, I'm still amazed. His runs are ridiculous!
Guys filming this must be thinking "Man, I love my job."
Jajajaj ... Muy cierto, uno se sentirá dichoso
@@marcos_c_m How do you know that?
@@marcos_c_m Lol that's cool
@@marcos_c_m like the solos or just the backing tracks?
@@fartman7470 all solos are impro, so just backing tracks. He made the famous Remember when backing track
Heard some licks from Waves here. Guthrie's a true master of technique and melody!
Very close right,i heard it too
May well be the greatest talent..beyond talent, on a guitar, there has ever been. This is a once in a lifetime experience. It is impossible to conceive that someone could come along and be better..be as good perhaps, but better?
The way he controls that "out of the fretboard" bend at 1:16 is just humanly impossible. Guthrie is just another kind of player.
This is simply...my favorite guitar solo of all time!
Not to mention the genius in his arrangements.Shawn was an amazing artist that knew music through and through. And it showed in his music.Gone but will never be forgotton,,RIP Shawn. And long live Guthrie Govan.
See him pull the string off the neck at 1:16 to get that pitch? I've seen him do some freaky stuff on the guitar, but that literally made my jaw drop... he has no bounds!
He wrote a book called Creative Guitar: Cutting Edge Techniques. And when you read it you will not only realize that he is truly THE GUITARIST, but his knowledge of theory and music in general is absolutely astounding. And he casually interprets it to you in this book without compromising his intelligence( or yours for that matter ha). If you play guitar, you must get it. Trust me
I could listen to this improv for the rest of my life and never get bored of it!
Guthrie isn't somebody who plays super intense sad music. He plays for fun. In all of his songs and his work with other bands he aims to express sheer musical joy.
absolutely amazing. Guthrie is hands down one of the best guitar players out there.
He really is one of a kind. He is just an absolute master musician.
This is the best, make my smile and want to pick up my guitar and learn playing that good. Amazing. I can watch this all the time.
BTW. I've got this on mp3 on my phone as calling-ring. Sometimes I don't answer, just want to listen and enjoy music :)
From 0:52 to 1:12 i swear to god i've never seen anything that beatiful.I am like a crack addict come back to this video a few Times per week
You are right Mr. Mustaine
Amazing. I hunky Guthrie has the ability to hear melodies in his head and he can transfer them to the fretboard immediately.
5 years later, yep, still amazing.
0:42
What I wanna know is how he crammed a freakin' saxophone into his guitar.
To those people saying Guthrie is all just technique and no musicality, you must be incredibly jealous. How the hell can you possibly say this isnt incredibly good guitar playing in all areas. Opinion doesnt even matter when it comes to talent like this, you cant say his playing is rubbish as if its a general fact. The fact is he is one of the best guitarist's in the world.
I'm sick of people who can't read, it clearly says TO JEFF BECK STYLE TRACK, NOT GUTHRIE GOVAN PLAYING IN THE STYLE OF JEFF BECK, the track is jeff beck's style, herp derp. This guy is an overall winner between every single guitar player, mix of technic with soul and passion for what he does, he doesn't need to play blues to get people to understand what he's feeling, sometimes, is good to listen to a guitar player who can play outside a pentatonic box.
The only shredder we need on UA-cam.
this is possibly my favourite piece of instrumental electric guitar ever. Its just perfect in every way :)
Man, he's coming to my city! I can't believe! I live in a small city of Brazil, and we will receive Guthrie, this is an amazing thing.
he is simply unbelievable!
protabs Flynn Salisbury I've just figured it out. He pulls the high e string not just horizontally off the fretboard, but vertically down as well. If you can pull down close enough to the fretboard then the high e will rest on the pickup, which since he has 22 fret humbucker equipped guitar is around where the 24th fret would be. Pull the string down and your humbucker becomes a fret that you can bend on as you please!
Oh I see what you're saying. That's pretty nuts
+Ryan Bailey its a 24 fret guitar
edit... oh wait its not. I thought all moderns were specced at 24 fret. I guess you can have what you want if you pay.
sacredgeometry It's not a modern, it's a standard, and a very nice one at that!
Ryan Bailey Oh that will indeed be why. Thanks :)
not E string, thats B string.
Holy hell.
How does he do this stuff? It puts every other guy who's supposed to be an amazing shredder like Joe Satch and Steve Vai to shame, it's amazing.
I've seen all GG's vids but I keep coming back to this "sleeper" the fingering in this blows me away!... I need this track(and all GG tracks) to be 3 times as long!
yeah thats right, were all musicians here (mostly)we should be supporting ourselves and learning off each other, no matter if you have skill or don't. If you want skill bad enough, you will archive it and its important to leave good feedback for further inspiration!
Yes,its a pinched harmonic, pulled off the fretboard,Try it a few times you will see,its a very cool little trick, but when that string goes off the edge, the pitch jumps at least a 5th.Thats what gives it its shifting effect.
Holy crap...this is amazing.
That's what ye call playin. Guthrie's got the lot. Truely talented musician to the extreme and modest too. LUVIT!!!
guthrie is the reason i play guitar. showed me a thing or two a few years ago when he went to tone merchants. the guitar world is a better place with him in it.
Simply one of the best guitar player.
this dude this gutherir govan dude is so good at the guitar that is to ay if i lived another 1000 years i could never b as good, hats off to you ,yoyu are a one in a billion talent on guitar
He's not imitating them. He's playing over a backing track in the style of those guitar players but using his own licks and technique.
awesome.. this guy is not just awesome with his own style but can play in any guitarrist style too...
Just the best in the game. Period.
MAB is a humble nice guy I've met him a few times and im sure as said he'd be the first to compliment Guthrie on his playing, and hopefully i'll be meeting Guthrie next year as rumour has it he's doing a clinic where I live.
LOL Shirito! I thi nk any of us woukld be honoured to tune GG's guitar! Reminds me of The Edge out of U2..someone asked him in an interview how he thought U2 compared to The Beatles and he said he would have been happy to carry their suitcases. its cool how so many great musicians and performers are still able to keep their humility.
Guthrie is indeed an amzing player! He's in the same leaque as Steve Morse, Bireli Lagrene and John Scofield. Those 4 are the absolute top right now.
I agree,he is fluidity.Because when you pull a note off the fretboard it actually turns into 2 different notes not counting the bend itself..The octave jump and the root, making it sound like just one big bend is amazing yet Guth makes it look like childsplay, lol, love this guy...
I'm Brazil, congratulations very nice!!
Will do,thanx for the info. Its always good coming from you.peace guy.
I swear that wide stretch lick @ 1:03 is in part the ''hard lick'' from Michael Jackson's beat it!
Between 0.56 and 1.01 it feels like being in Nintendoworld eating ice cream with Zelda. Thank you Guthrie for sharing this moment!
his runs are absolutly insane like amazingly stupidly fucking insane the man is a technical beast
1:20-1:26...It reminds me of his song waves...Same lick ;)
Great jam...Guthrie is the best!
Amazing! I heard a guy hear saying his tone is horrible but I think it's really good for the music he plays.
That's one of the coolest posts I've ever read!
guthrie... u r the best!
the best fuckin' intro ! full of positive energy!
Yup, on the G3 tour, with his hero Jeff Beck!
Thats an excellent point. I admit I'm craving his unique notes. All the spammers are probably the same, but are jealous. I admit I'm slightly jealous, but more happy to find a guitarist who hits all the melodies on the head and plays everything the way that shakes the soul
Buy this man's album! Guth may not leave a footprint on guitar playing in the way Satch or Vai might (when you turn up late, all the seats at the Pantheon are taken), but it's a long time since either of them has produced an album as good as Erotic Cakes. In fact I can't think of an album by either Satch or Vai that's as consistent as E.C. Every track is killer. This is an album that the combined talents of Satch, Vai and Holdsworth would struggle to produce, it really is that good.
p.s. bare in mind he is bending the b (or maybe the g) string and bending it under the e string.
this video deserves much more than 5 stars , a few praising comments and a spot in my favorites... i just don't know what it is.
apart from every single note being Fooking awsome !!! 1:16 is sheer GENIUS !!!!
They are selling a product and giving him time to hear these track's well before will make the end product better giving him an idea of what he would like to lay down before the actual recording session.Thats just common sence,so I do believe there was alot more to it than Govan just walking in and jamming to trcks he had never heard before and having a finished product on a bunch of tracks in one day.Like I said they want the best product in the end, giving him time is the best way.
The most amazing player ever!
yes it does!! is the old Steve Vai trick, he did it on "Blues Powder" from Passion and Warfare, years ago...
Here's the latest comment.......this vdo still hits the perfect spot💜
Please put all these on musical platforms like Spotify and apple music
@Tonesnob72 He hits the A at the 10th fret of the B string but instead of bending it towards him, he bends it down towards the floor and off the fretboard. It's something Steve Vai does quite a bit.
God damn, those pinches at the beginning, so precise! That is a man who knows his instrument so damn well. I also don't think I've ever heard him play 2 things the same, he's just so bloody inventive...bastard, lol.
16 years and nothing has changed... GG is still the best.. There aren't many 16 year old videos where an average guitarist could still say "WOW.. He really did it?" Paganini non ripete
those harmonics at the start are awesome! he can just play anythin
lots of waves sounding things in there. badass....
Ohhh,I got ya,and totally agree.Govan could surely lay something amazing down to any piece of music.Specialy these tracks the way these are layed out having heard them or not. I havent seen anyone improv as well a Govan since Shawn Lane.
absolutely beautiful, even though it has very few to do with beck's style.
For all the people bashing that he is not playing one's style: Read the title again, the backing track has the style of one, but all the rest is guthrie's own style
Insanely good
Im glad someone agree's.Its not a 5th though, that was something else(my bad)but it is a 2octave jump when the pinched harmonic goes off the edge, the trick is to make it sound fluid, like one bend. But Govans fluidity makes it look easy. And hat tip to everyone making this a cool discussion,Gavan, and Govan fans rock. Its rare to have it like this, and thanks for the comment Killmaster, and replys from everyone else you guys are great.
lauriemonk in 1993 GG did a style analysis for Guitar Techniques magazine on Shawn Lane. There are files going round of his playing the examples - check his Discussion Board. As for Greg Howe, apparently 1st tim GH heard GG he gave him a standing ovation. He is also quoted as saying GG has raised the bar for guitarists
The title is (Guthrie Govan playing to Jeff Beck STYLE TRACK).Guthrie is playing,on a backing track, which is based on Jeff's style..
Of course he's not playing like Jeff..He doesn't even try.. That's what backing tracks do. Help you to improve your own style..
Ridiculous skills. This guy isn't a guitar player, he's a sorcerer.
if all he'd ever played in his life was the 11 secs between 1:09 and 1:20 he'd still be my favourite guitar player.
Your comment has my age minus 2 years
@@Istisaac ha! I don't remember leaving that comment at all! 13 years on however I still agree with the sentiment! :)
magnifique guitar-hero excellent very very good number one guitar
Love the waves reference
this guy is from another planet
Awesome!
It would be so nice to have people in town who were this good and could help you become great. Most the teachers/ players around me and many others just suck
True master of technique-bypasses feeling and soul completely: Amazing...
Ah yes... feeling and soul. The excuse hacks use when they can't play well.
***** Exactly!
+Simon Loveland true master of stupid comment on youtube, bypasses brain and thought, clearly an idiot
The tone of that is amazing. EARGASM
Incredible hes an absolute master
impeccable!!!
I think you're my hero. I had the exact same opinion about Guthrie. The man is obviously talented, he can mimic many different styles, and does indeed have a style of his own. While I don't actively dislike his style, it isn't something I find myself wanting to listen to on a regular basis either.
To clarify, that should not in any way take anything away from him. he's doing what he wants to do because he wants to do it - as music should be. Myself and Daim0th are simple doing the same thing.
Never seen/heard something like 1:16 - wow!
I was thinking the same
I do that all that time. It's more of a trick than anything. All you do is bend the string off the fret board, so it gets pushed to the side of the fret, instead of the top, and that's how that sound is achieved.
JD0x0 Cool, thanks for the info JD :)
+JD0x0 its not that what he did, but how he did it in terms of musical terms and how he blend it melodically with the rest of the phrase. Everyone can do it just like you said, but doing it musically like he did, not everyone can
JD0x0 , not quite. He is pulling the B string off the fretboard at the 10 th position (A) to a E two octaves above! In order to achieve this you have to pull the string( together with the high E string) completely out of the fretboard and behind the neck! Very difficult to do, and he even does it in the middle of a solo in a very musical way! Just insane!
that's a very sweet list
THANK YOU, I find it sad how every one but us finds it impossible to comprehend that.
This man can play all the notes, all the scales and most of the technics and styles in one song.
This is demonstration at 75%. A very good demonstration. Nothing more. I would be interested to see him playing a song with a real band.
He has a band....
man thats awesome news! three cheers for guthrie!
Guthrie is the best beast!!!
Now that is smooth....like a fine aged bourbun.....sweet
bravo.....cheers!
you're great man!!!
I dont want to say to much, becuase these discussions usually don't end that well. I like Guthrie, and Im here to learn good technique; because he is an absolute master. But I also understand why people dont like him (clubsandwedge ect...)Its hard to explain because I dont want to call him crap, becuase he isnt; but when Im looking for the "special" feel of music I look somewhere else. This is something beyond the "wow" factor, something more spiritual. Philosophy behind music is very important.
