I have about 50K miles across 2 bikes using K&N, so I'll be sticking with them. But honestly I think most of those filters would do the job just fine with regular maintenance.

When referring to particle sizes in regards to oil filters, it is important to realize exactly how small the particles being discussed really are. Then, we can discuss the filtration effects of the filters in question in regards to engine life. There is a misconception when it comes to oil filters, that the smaller the micron rating the better the filter. Some companies rate their filter as a “5 micron” filter, which means the filter will catch particles microns in size with at least 50% efficiency. Let’s put a 5 micron particle in perspective. 1 micron is .001mm (or .00003937 inch), so 5 micron is .005mm (.00019685 inch). The tolerances in your engine will be no smaller than 2.5 thousandths of an inch (.0025”). So, 2.5 thousands of an inch, which is equal to a 63.5 micron particle. A 5 micron particle is smaller than a human red blood cell, and too small to see with the naked eye. So how can a particle that size cause damage to your engine?
Next, let’s consider the purpose of an oil filter bypass valve. A bypass valve opens when the inlet side of the filter gets too restrictive. This can happen when the engine is cold and the viscosity of the oil is high (due to the weight of the oil), but this primarily happens when the filter media gets too restrictive or clogged. This is done to keep catastrophic engine failure from occurring; dirty oil is better than no oil. The lower the pressure relief rating, the sooner the valve allows unfiltered oil to enter your system. The last factor that contributes to the bypass opening is the amount (surface area) of the filter media used in the filter. A filter that has a high surface area is going to hold more contaminant and promote good oil flow for a longer period of time, so the bypass will take longer to open.
If the filter you use is 95% efficient at 5 microns it is going to remove more contaminants than a filter that is 3% efficient at 5 microns. The question is, how long will it take for those filters to load up with contaminant and enter bypass? The answer is simple, the more efficient filter will load up sooner, but at what expense? Oil flow is necessary to lubricate rotating parts, prevent engine failure, and help keep the engine cooler, plus again dirty oil flow is better than starving the engine of oil completely (the theory behind the filter bypass). Clean oil is best for long engine life, and a filter that can promote clean oil flow consistently for a longer period of time is a key component of any healthy engine.
When you are talking about filtration, whether it be oil or air, there is a balancing act that has to be performed to ensure your engine gets the protection it needs while giving your engine the most flow possible. Unfortunately, when the focus is an oil filter that is catching extremely small particles at a high percentage, the tradeoff is flow rate. This put the consumer in a “Catch-22” situation. Do you use a filter with the most efficient media at the smallest particle rating, and have the bypass open letting unfiltered oil through the system? Or do you have a filter that does not filter as small a particle size, but filters more of the oil for a longer period of time? K&N filters are designed to give you the balance of oil flow and filtration. Of course, we would like to say we have the most efficient filter at the smallest micron range, but the fact is we are not going to sacrifice oil flow or the quality of filtration by having a high efficiency filter that operates in bypass mode for 80% percent of its life. I know for me personally it’s a simple decision, the small particle filtration does not mean anything to me since we are talking about particles I can’t see, especially if there is a remote possibility of unfiltered oil touching my bearing surfaces causing premature wear and eventual engine failure.
When you are comparing filters, to make the most informed decision possible, look at the following things (with the least amount of emphasis on micron rating): Filtration efficiency, Filter surface area, bypass setting.
The KN-171 filter has a nominal micron rating of 25, meaning it will capture 25 micron particles with at least 50% efficiency. The filtration efficiency of the KN-171 at 5 microns is 3%. The KN-171 also has 165 sq.in. of filter area partially the reason it flows 25% better than the OE, paired with a bypass that opens at 14psi. The Harley Davidson filter 95.8% efficient at 5 micron and 98.6% at 25 micron, it also has 63 sq.in. of media and a bypass that opens at 10psi. This means the Harley filter will run in bypass mode for a significant portion of its installed life, whereas the K&N will allow oil to flow through the filter for a longer period of time. In my personal opinion, this makes the K&N filter the clear choice.
Here is a side by side to the amount of media inside of a K&N filter and your typical OEM filter (I don't think it is Harley's current one but look cool)

I personally don't care too much. I'm a guy who religiously changes oil at / before specified intervals.
My '19 RKS had a stock HD filter that was cranked on way too tightly (either by the motor company, dealer, or previous owner). The touring line has the filter in a small pocket in front of the motor with VERY limited access. Needless to say- I had a difficult time removing it after it crushed using the HD oil filter tool.
I swear by K&N oil filters. Having the integrated nut on the end of the cannister totally prevents the cannister from crushing.

Agree 100% this is why I try to fit the largest possible filter on all my power equipment. Today not only are they trying to sell the public with the lowest micron rating there selection is also shrinking literally, in choices and in physical size in order to accommodate many more vehicles with that specific filter this adds to the detriment, one size does not fit all, having a larger filter area is always better, with a sensible micron rating and the highest psi. bypass valve rating that is acceptable to your application. But I seem to be repeating myself over and over with the lack of emphasizes in these oil filter video's on the importance of the location of the bypass valve which should always be direct, oil should not have to pass over the dirty filter medium before re-entering the engine and in this video the only filter that offers that is the Wix. Being an old experienced gearhead It is unfortunate that through the years for the sake of keeping manufacturing cost down and staying competitive many companies are no longer producing them as they once did but don't worry there are one's that still do and are these are the ones I seek. In sum todays trend seems to be smaller filters, (buying the public) with the lowest micron ratings, and no direct bypass valve. Ridiculous. Hopefully this trend will change with people understanding on how often these bypass valves are being activated with all this at play. Look harder and shop wisely, sincerely, old gearhead, Paul Timpani

The K&N filter is an older, paper filter technology, this filter blocks particles on the surface. The H-D, Amsoil and Wix are using a multi layer media that traps particles within the layers similar to a HEPA filter. The multi layer approach has proven to trap more before clogging while providing better flow through.

I have run an EVO to nearly 100,000 before I rebuilt and a twin cam 88 to over 100,000 and it is still running great with engine never having been apart other than cam chest changing to gear drive cams @15,000 miles. I now have a TC 103 and an M8 107 and have always changed the oil @ 2500 mile intervals so bypass should not be an issue. It's a formula that is proven for me. The K&N looks great but I feel it is overengineered and offers more protection than I need so why spend the extra money when I've never had an oil or lubrication related failure. I have also only ran Amsoil or Redline oils.

Old filters since the Evo days have had a 8-11psi bypass.
I’m guessing Harley finally upped it to around 15-18 psi since the oil pumps from even the TCs put out a lot more psi which would cause the lower setting filters to go into bypass more often.

Harley increased capacity because they filter down so tight 5 microns. They know that their oil filters end up in complete bypass quickly ie. 2500-3000 miles. The Amsoil filter is a 20 micron filter and the K&N has a 25 micron filter. The amsoil and k&n won’t plug as quick so they filter more. Increasing the capacity on the Harley filter was to help prevent the oil filter from being plugged (restricted) so quickly so it doesn’t go into bypass and can filter oil longer. A 25% increase in filter media on a 5 micron filter won’t extend the filter life out to a 5000 mile oil change interval. It is better but, falls short. If you are going to use a filter that is that restrictive you should change it at 2500 miles in between your regular oil changes. With the amsoil or k&n you aren’t filtering as tight but your restriction is punched out to a longer time or miles window thus not going into bypass and still filtering oil all the way through your 5000 mile interval. Nothing wrong with the Harley filter, just know you need a filter change at 2500 in between the 5000 mile oil change. Maybe sooner.

regardless of how often you change your filter or how new it is the bypass valve will still get activated, such as when the oil is cold and doesn't flow easily or when your running your engine at higher RPM's, this happens more so with todays offerings of shrinking filter sizes, this is why having a direct bypass valve is crucial , sincerely, old gearhead, Paul Timpani

I'm glad you did this so I didn't have too, always wanted to know, now I do, after replacing thousands of filters on Harley's over 25 years in my shop, I will use the new longer Harley filter on my personnel TC bikes, the nut on the K&N looks cheap and tacky and filter is over priced, also I wouldn't recommend the Amsoil filter to anyone, and the Wix is for lawn mowers. thanks

Awesome video! I have a 2019 Iron and it calls for the twin cam filter. I went to Autozone and bought Lucas 20w50 synthetic motorcycle oil and filter. They didn’t have the K&N oil filter but crossed it to a Mobil M1-102A. 30 micron, anti drain back valve, 12-17 psi release valve. The only thing wasn’t at spec was the 5 micron which the Mobil had 30 micron. Would this filter be ok? Thanks for your expertise! Everything you did is informative but what we need in how well a filter filters. Construction is important.
There must be a way to check how they are rated for micron. Almost all of us changes the oil at the beginning or end of the season then store the bike here in the northeast. So fresh clean oil is not a problem. Riding about 5,000 to 6,000 miles an average season.
    Membrane can filter differently.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I would really like to test or be part of testing the actual filter capacity and efficiency. Maybe when the channel grows or if a situation arises I can get into a 3rd party testing facility. If any one has any ideas, toss them out there. I would be super interested.

Is the new twincam filter got a new prefix number allocated ?
Also I was watching a video by another engine tech and he was saying the issue with HD Filters is that the 5micons is too small and blocks prematurely and sends oil to bypass too soon in the mileage. Have you also found this. ?
Would it be better to have a 10 or 15micron to stop oil being pushed through bypass ?
    Enjoyed your video once again.

, I listened to what Kevin had to say also and it made me decide to change just my filter every 2,500 miles. Not only will that ensure the filter never goes into bypass, it'll also give the old oil a fresh shot by filling the new filter with new oil before installing.

I have a 96 EVO which always had stock oil filters and they are long just like the new M8 oil filter. Then it's either the new M8 filter or the K&N I will put on my 2017 107 ultra. I'm not a fan of reusable or cleanable filters. i've heard A human hair is about 75 microns across so if a filter is good down to 5 micron, I feel like there is zero chance of knowing (after cleaning a reusable filter ) if the dirt the filter had collected is cleaned out as I cant see it. So now H-D fits a larger filter in order to (try and) flow more oil.... why don't they just address their quality of manufacture ?
The oil pumps and pressure relief valves are where the problem is along with too fine a filter......... the filter clogs too easily and then the oil bypasses the filter medium - result is unfiltered oil circulating - use a Sportster oil filter and the bypass situation goes away. Sure the Sporty filter doesn't filter to 5 microns, but neither does the 5 micron when it's in bypass mode.......
