Fucking love the stylistic change. Another TDP would have been an easy cop out. I will never fault a band for doing something different....especially when they kill it.
As an avid shoegaze listener, the fact that the vocals are buried in the mix doesnt bother me at all lol
These new singles are sooooooooo different that i feel bad for the people expecting dark pool 2, but i can't help but love this new sound, only complaint is the vocals are too low on the mix
I think these mixes are horrible and it’s the only reason I don’t like it. The songs are cool, and there’s obvious talent in this band.
@@mvvnlit3983 I don't think the mix is as bad as like, that last Loathe song, but i can see it feeling off in the first listen, i'm used to the mix by now though
Whenever I read those arguements I cant help but feel a little put off. Why is everyone that dislikes the new direction automatically assumed to want The Dark Pool 2, with the bad conotation that wanting TDP 2 is bad or lame or autistic (not my words). I dont event want TDP 2, I would want a evolvment of that, a new direction thats not 180° different. I think I could handle a music change by 90°, if that makes sense, but with this, its too much for me. But its probably my fault cause I hold TDP to such high standards ..
@@linker94 I agree, I don’t understand why wanting a continuation of an incredible album is crazy? Like TDP was absolutely loved and was exciting to most people who heard it, why wouldn’t people want an even BETTER version of that?
@@linker94 Don't worry, in my case i genuinelly feel bad for the people that wanted an evolution of the previous sound, cause i like the new one a lot.
The stupid ones are the people generalizing whichever side of the argument as stupid, it's just a difference in music taste and expectations.
In my case i love both TDP and the new singles, they are unique enough for me to like them independently despite the low volume vocals, also the deftones influences are a huge plus for me.
Thornhill is a mixture of Deftones and Muse and im all for it

Totally love Arkangel and Hollywood. So different, so fresh sounding, just insane.
This is my opinion I like Arkangel better than Hollywood sorry that's just my opinion.
I personally love when a band moves away from the sound they had on their first album. Experemental (idk how to spell that) Metal is one of my favorite types of music.
The Dark Pool was a masterpiece (I felt that anyway). It's hard to not want another album just like it. These new singles are a different dish with similar spices, we get the small tastes of melody but the core music itself is very different. For what it is, it's still brilliant music.

I personally think the mix makes it sound unique and fits with the new direction rather than a typical metalcore production. I wish his voice could soar a little more though. This album is about to split a fanbase however.

I’m not personally a huge fan of these singles, mostly because it’s such an out of nowhere change from The Dark Pool.
BUT
If the band members themselves enjoy the direction, then I respect that and I’ll still continue to support them.
The way I see it is the TDP sound is complete and I don't really see anything new that can come out of that sound and im fine with that. It will always be a masterpiece and a showcase of Thornhill's uniqueness and creativity. I would love to hear more of the TDP sound but I just don't think a TDP 2 would be as interesting or as wanted as a lot of people think, I personally do not like when bands continue doing one specific sound just because "it works" that material gets repetitive quick and especially in the state of metal we are in right now where a trend is started and almost every band jumps on it and abuse that style till everybody gets bored. Remember when Nu Metalcore became popular with bands like Alpha Wolf, Dealer, etc. A lot of bands jumped on that Nu Metalcore craze a few years ago and in my opinion its a dry part of Metalcore, I think the only band that keeps that unique and interesting is Alpha Wolf themselves and LANDMVRKS. Anyway I think i got my point across these are just my ramblings I'm high so don't mind me.
Well thornhill is going as a four piece now their Rhythm Guitarist Matt had announced he stepped down from the band from performing and touring he's now full time manager with thornhill.
This is my favorite band, and I’m so happy they’re not just doing a sequel to the dark pool, while it’s my favorite album, there needs to be something new, despite audio quality andys complaining that the mix is different
Me too I love thornhill I just got into them late this year and I had a chance to see them live with moodring so good.
Honestly their last songs have been absolute fire. Their new style is amazing.

I like the direction, I just want to HEAR Jacob, it really feels like his contribution to the sound of this record is being buried under its distortion. Arkangel is incredible, I just want to be able to enjoy it without having to pull up Genius.
I agree. The effects are just too much on his vocals and to me, it ruins the gentleness and beauty of his voice. I feel like this effect works well with his highs cuz it just compresses it so much and makes it sound like a screeching guitar at some parts. Such a shame.
I personally think that removing the distortion from his voice would fundamentally change the vibe of the songs for the worse. I do agree that it's a bummer that the vocals are drowned out as much, but it fits the style a lot imo.
@@Blaarkable I think the effects could have been dialed down a bit in this song. Like in Casanova, I think his voice sounds fine with the effects.

Nah it’s a shoegaze/grunge thing look at Deafheaven they have parts where the vocals get smothered and it’s intentional. It’s a creative thing and I kinda like when bands don’t always focus on the vocals 24/7 just because the singer is opening his mouth doesn’t mean that’s the most important part of the song. It’s about the composition.
Although this is completely different from what people expected, I can’t help but notice that this is a good thing. It’s completely different and it’s what makes thornhill unique from other bands.
The thing is that this different direction is everything _but_ unique. It's Deftones X Muse. The songs are good in itself, but nothing special to me.
I totally agree with you : these songs are SEXY AS F*CK. I would like to hear a bit more Jacob's incredible voice but I really enjoy this new style
I loved Casanova, it took me a couple of listens to really appreciate how Fucking good Arkangel was, I liked Hollywood

I'm captivated. I'm glad they're doing this, I don't want Dark Pool pt.2, all bands need to switch shit up at some point.
I find it so strange that people dismiss their new direction and sound, personally I really Love it! YES Dark Pool was pretty much flawless but it's not night and day really, a lot of the elements from the EPs and DP is still very much there. The more "Royal Blood"-ish vocals he's going for now really works for me aswell! Love Thornhill

I wish more bands would use side projects like ADM to keep two great but different genres going.
I also wish they cleaned up the vocals JUST for a few key heavy breakdowns.
Also, very legit comparison with Deftones mixed with Muse, I'm a Huge Deftones fan aswell so that's definitely a great thing

This is one of the best changes to this scene i've ever heard. Dark pool was great, and i'm kind of glad we wont here another "dark pool 2" it can stay special. But now we get to witness another special album by these boys. So excited for it, this band bangs so hard.
I don't know why but the new album gives me some 2000's vibes.

while not a huge fan of casanova and arkangel, i absolutely love hollywood and I´m hyped for the album now because well... It´s gonna be a vibe for sure, just hope it will be one with more diversity.

The dark pools was such a refreshing change in the scene, it quickly became my favorite album. Its been hard for me personally to get into these singles due to the drastic change, but regardless, they are still all good songs.
i played this 20 times since it came out its my soty probably but i understand why the core community dont like this style but i love it(except casanova its 7/10)

wasn´t really into it at first, cause of the massive overproduction, but it sounds so dope live. His raw screams are incredible
first time hearing this i was being a hater so fast, but more and more i'm listening this new album now i get that why they change to be more familiar mature mainstream. maybe for me the metalcore is like literally dead pool/dead end. it was like no more room for divergent style and production innovations, and they was basically being ausy, which is being weird and strange in a good way.
I liked parts of it, mostly towards the end 😆. A lot sounds so dampened like the guitar solo and the vocals, didn't dig that so much. The first part could totally fit in my indie rock playlist rather than my core one. Not very familiair thornhill yet, will check them out.

Can't imagine listening a whole LP with vocals like that. Yeah, production and technique are on point and stuff like that. But if it will be a full album in this style, I don't think that I'll like that, it's too viscous for me. Don't hate these three singles, but don't love them either. Or maybe I just fell in love with the dark pool sound too much. Hoping for more diversity on the album

I’m not really mad at the new direction they’re going in because instrumentally these 3 singles have been really good. I just can’t stand the vocalist moaning into the mic all the time (or at least he doesn’t do this vocal style as good as other bands who use it imo) and the vocals are caked in effects in this track which makes it even harder to listen to. I think it would’ve been better if they just kept the fx for only the intro and then made it his normal voice for the rest of the song, but this is just my opinion

I will say, have people heard Jacob's vocals in TDP? It's always been quite a bit drowned out (albeit a little moreso here), the main difference in the vocals is the moodier/sensual delivery. I honestly get confused with fans saying the vocals are so muffled now, they have been?
There are some obvious changes in sound, and I don't blame people for not liking them (I am loving them), but it just confuses me because this band legit got me into shoegaze and people are saying thornhill wasn't shoegazy on TDP?
@@QuantumLimp for me it's just that on the DP I could make out what Jacob was saying and on this track I can't really.But I actually like this sound very much.
@@benedekistvan2655 that's definitely fair, I normally didn't care for being able to hear the lyrics that well in the first place (I have a seemingly harder time than most, anyways) so maybe that's some aspect I'm missing in some of the backlash

I actually really like the instrumental a lot compared to the previous ones but I can't stand the vocal production. I hope this isn't the direction the whole album is going because I couldn't listen to a whole album with vocal effects like that and from what I've heard it's the main thing that people dislike about their new stuff.

it's completely stylistic, it's meant to have that "larger than life" feel, it's setting up for a BIG section at the end of the album for sure

The modern day metal Radiohead. Personally, all of the singles have grown on me and I enjoy them. Will be an interesting album to say the least.
Man, as much as I want to get into these singles... I just can't. The Dark Pool is one of my favorite albums and I feel like it did a good job at standing out in comparison to other bands in the genre at the time. I even have a tattoo of a song lyric!
This switch up just doesn't hit the same for me. It feels very boring in comparison. Happy to see them getting more recognition though, they're definitely a talented group.

This wasn't my favorite song from heroine the music video is cool but I don't revisit it I prefer arkangel I like the heavier side of thornhill anyways if you were wondering who the girl is in the car with Jacob that's Miranda tibit she's an Australian actress and she's dating Jacob they met on the set of Hollywood.

I got into them through these singles and really enjoy the experimentation aspect with these more than I enjoy The Dark Pool
I found out thornhill from dark Pool, I usually skipped alot of these bands with the djenty architects sound. Sounded boring, but these new songs are awesome sounding.

Didn’t get into thornhill to hear this kind of muse on steroids sound, they had a distinct proggy sound and themes, I was expecting an evolution, this doesn’t float my boat, it’s ok not great. Shame because I really liked them

It’s comfortably the strongest single so far but I still can’t stand this vocal production, it’s genuinely grating to me. As a result, even though I enjoyed it to an extent, I don’t see myself returning to the song anytime soon.
The two strongest parts of this band for me were the atmosphere and the vocals and both are lacking in this new project, which is a shame because I like the source of these influences (I.e., Deftones and Muse) but certain choices cut this bands strengths out from under them.
