Great vid. One of my favorite bush pots came from Walmart, it's a $6.99 grease pot. Has a pour spout and lid. Love this.

You're absolutely right. I always go through the sports (camping) section when I do go to walmart to see what's on clearance. I have several of those tarps also. Thanks for sharing.

Good information. There are many exceptional deals out there on quality gear that doesn't cost a fortune but there are also items that are worth spending a little more on as well. In general, I think some people get caught up in name brands and just having the latest and greatest gear. Nothing can ever be more valuable than knowledge and experience and the more of that we have, the less high dollar gear I think we will need. Thanks for the video! Take care.

Good selection of items. I have that Chinese made knife and it does a good job for the $7.95 I paid for it and the fire steel works well also. Thanks.

Great ideas! Given the present state of the economy, many people will have no choice but to go with inexpensive gear. Also, if it is lost, stolen or confiscated, it won't hurt so much. You don't need expensive gear to get by.

Nice video. A little perspective on knives. That tanto might not be the best, but, think about in comparison to the bronze, or very soft iron knives that the majority of humans used and survived with for 1,000's of years. A cheap factory made knife is still going to be more durable and have better edge retention that what most of our ancestors made do with for a very very long time. So, it's all relative.

Good video!!! You made a good point in regards to budgeting however; I'm a firm believer in "You get what you pay for." I wouldn't repeat the purchase on many of those items you shown for example the tarp. I am a disabled Veteran working on a tight budget myself, but what I do is buy a little at a time. I am currently saving up for the ESEE 6 which costs around 145.00. That is a alot of money for me at this time but it has an unconditional life-time warranty. Good video Marine, I hope you post more in the near future. Subscribed, thumbs up!!

The backpacker tarp is really a good item. I got two and sewed them together, to make a 10' x 7'. Had to remove the grommets an add my tie out loops. Use mine when I hammock camp.

Good video! I think that it is real easy to fall into the "gear" trap. Where we think that unless we have spent a bunch of money on something that it isn't any good. When it comes down to it most of what the majority of us do does not call for a $300.00 knife and a $300.00 pack filled with high end gear. You can do almost anything in the woods with cheaper alternatives if you shop around and use common sense.

Your vid hits the point i try to impress on people Ive talked to about building a survival bag. I tell them, I would rather see you have a cheap $40 System/kit in every vehical you own as to have a big $300 system/kit in the closet at home. Side Note when Im talking to those that think the whole survival thing is for crazies on tv, I call it a prepareness bag I get a lot better response/feedback.

  • @kan-zee

We are "up in age" here in N.Canada. 70 winters and more, so our survival is pretty much done. lol. Still we are conditioned to think/Act on the events of our lives. Power outages, Floods,Snow storms, Electrical storms, iIlness epidemics, accidents. We are at a time in our life cycles, where we don't prioritize our prepping for ourselves anymore, but instead prep for our great grandchildren and grandchildren. it has been a human tradition to help support our decendants, as long as there remains family/extended family. So our task as elderly , is not to roll up and die..but to live on, and help the next generations..this is our bug out scenario..lol Cheers ;-))

Good video and very good point. I've had expensive kit let me down and cheaper kit take a beating and do it's job just fine. I suppose it's just part of the learning process and in the end the kit that's most valuable to you is the stuff that works for you. Most of the time I enjoy this process of elimination and just try to learn from it.

    I have 3 Survival Kits.
#1 +- $100.00 (Keep it at work) (all came from Wal-Mart)
    #2 +- $400.00 (Truck/Quad)
    #3 +- $4000.00 (Keep it at home)
Have plans to make Lots more cheap ones to keep in random places.

***** Depending on where you live I believe a lot of the stuff this guy showed in his video are in every ones homes by default. I see dogwood trees so maybe this guy is from GA or TN. Anyways some people definitely do over do it with prepping.

***** When you are at you house after the SHTF, remember you most likely have water, electricity or sewage. So, your garden won't have water and your house will only be shelter. I live in the mountain west. We can get lost in the woods and not close at all to what most people would call a river. You do need to be supplied for at least a Hurricane Sandy or the Worst Winter Storm.

I had to log in and leave a 'thank you' for a great video. Thanks so much for the tips because looking at some of these things out there are costing big. I did get a titanium cook pot, but I got the Toaks for $30 and it's just as good as the high-end...and it works. I still have the aluminum kit I bought, for the 'just in case' moments. I also know what he means about the knives. I bought a more expensive knife by Gerber, and I'm not happy with it. The blade is 'too thick' and just won't hole a sharp edge. I've got a kitchen knife that does better for batoning. But I did use a state-wide store. But with everything I bought it's more for light-weight, but none of it costs a fortune. Bad economy, so we do what we can do. I'm hoping I can find a knife as shown; although I have a 'very sharp' Sog Machete, who whips that out all the time. :) Thanks guys.

There are a lot of People out there, who should hear, what you are saying... it doesn't has to cost much, to survive.
Here in Germany we don't get most of the Stuff that cheap (espiecially the Knife is just a Dream!), but also we can work on a Budget (I HAVE to)...
Most People say, they dont give theyr Life to cheap Equipment... I dont give my Life to a empty Head. ;-)
Thank for that Vid, u got a new Abo. Thumbs up. :-)

Thank you for this vid. So many times I have been out with other guys and we get on the,"gear", topic and instead of what we have and its functionality it gets turned into how much did it cost; like the price has every thing to do with how well the item works.

That mess kit isn't bad. I take it with me, whenever my unit goes to the field. I just cook up some stuff I brought from home off my portable stove, cause let's face it, field chow sucks.

The mess kit is stainless, that is cool, i have a couple around here tho the old style and aluminum, which is frowned upon these days. Tho i have an old boy scout mess kit and it is alot thicker and well used. One of the first kits i have used tho never was in scouts lol. The tarp looked like its said 5x7 on the front of the pouch, would work in a pinch. Nice finds Garth. The usa walmart has alot better selection then our canadian walmart. The ENO travel hammock from the states side walmart is one of the best buys you will get on a hammock. 24.95 and rated to hold more weight then most, up to 350lbs i believe. Tho you cant buy them in canada. Anyhow great video bro and thanks for sharing.

Incidentally, I'm a great fan of the Mora line of knives. Don't leave home without one. They match up very well with more expensive knives. I think it is a bit of a hoot to call a big clunker of a knife a "primary" knife when the darn thing isn't good for much of anything except battoning wood. A small saw and a Mora is a great combination. The Mora line is synonymous with quality.

I found a site called BangGood that is cheap. Stuff comes from China, but It's cheap and Being on a budget, It allows me to get what I need for my survival kit a little at a time. I am just building my first one up. Been 3 months now I have gotten a little at a time. I got that Knife BTW! LOL! I love it! Harber freight also sells cheap! I got my cooking stuff from a site called Listia. It's like ebay but free. My biggest thing is trying to find a back pack on the cheap.

I agree with everybody; most items don't need to cost a bundle to offer function in an emergency. But I do draw a line, a very thick line, when it comes to an axe, knife, or bucksaw; in that order. It is on these items, that I will spend most of my budget; because my life, and possibly the lives of others will depend on these items when the worst possible scenario happens unexpectedly. I'm one of those persons who will not settle on, "this isn't a bad knife, it's not that bad". As far as everything else though, function can be very cheap, if one is smart and thorough in their selection and choices. By the way....... where's Dave? Haven't seen him in a while; hope all is well with him, family, and friends.......

Thumbs up! Get the basics first. Even if it means cooking in a tin can from the kitchen. Using a dollar store shower curtain liner for a tarp, if that's all you can afford. Don't spend a $100+ on a knife if you don't already have a way to boil water to make it safe to drink. I'm afraid, so many get discouraged because they can't afford the high end equipment many promote.
Get job in getting the word out.

the mess kit is not worth the money, mostly you need deep pots out in the woods, not frying pans, so those boy scout style mess kits are ok for camping maybe but not for backpacking or cooking stew or boiling water.
