    Great video. Thanks for sharing.
    It's Martin Luther King day and my son and I just burned about twenty acres of timber today.
    One tip, have two methods of fire suppression for each person. The only time I had a fire get out on me was when my ATV spray pump went out. Had to call the fire department and they put it out with a combination of pump up sprayers and leaf blowers.
    This is one of my favorite channels. It combines university-level research with practical applications.

    I just had a thought that I think would be really neat if you guys were able to do it. It would be awesome to have you guys put on your website all the photos you got of bucks on the Proving grounds 2 each year going forward and have a list of all the improvements done each year moving forward. That way we would get a small glimpse of how the improvements in quality cover and forage improve the quality of the deer!

    I completely understand fire is a great tool. However, there’s a few times in there, where the flames were really big, I would have been completely freaking out! I’m hoping I can work with my local forestry folks and get some RX burns done on my property. Thanks for sharing!

    Absolutely have learned so much from your videos over the last 3 years. Thank you!! I have recently taken the online burn course here in Mo, and has scheduled the in person day course in Kirksville in March. Looking forward to it. In my limited experience of prescribe burns that I've done here at home, (1 acre or so) what seems to flourish is the poison ivy. I'm not seeing much of any native forbs that I see on your videos. Any suggestions. Thanks, Jack

    Thanks for the video, I was happy to see this as I do have a question around this. I'm in Kentucky, and on my property, there are a few stands of cedars. I've always thought that these were bedding areas for the deer (as I see deer coming from them in the mornings and heading towards them in the evenings, so I've tended to stay out of them and leave them as they are. I've now seen several videos here that seem to suggest that getting rid of all the cedars is a good thing. Any light you can shed on this?
    The other question I have is, I can get some help from the state for a burn, never done one and don't have many people that could help, would using a woodchipper and just sending the chips back on to the ground around where the cedars are viable?
    I know I can't chip the main trunks on big cedars, I'd most likely find something else to do with them.
    Thanks!

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Рік тому

      Deer will bed where they feel safe. If no one goes in the cedars - it's a sanctuary - then I'm sure deer bed there. However, cedars shade out all other plants if allows to mature and the bottom limbs prune. It's thick where you and I walk but a biological desert where a deer, turkey, and quail make a living. Feeling the cedars, allowing them to dry for two years, and then burning in place - not a pile - will return all those nutrients across the area and usually results in a great stand of native vegetation where the sun reaches the soil ands the sun's energy products quality food and cover -not a biological desert. We'll host a Field Event June 9-10 at our place and show all of this. Registration is limited to 100 folks so everyone can see and hear the demonstrations.

    How long does a tree have to lay on the ground after being cut before it is dry enough to burn well? Specifically pine trees and sweet gums that are a few years old and in the 10-15 foot tall height range.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Рік тому +1

      Tree trunks on the ground tend to hold moisture and rarely burn well.

    Hello Dr. Woods. Thank you for this video! I have property in SC but MUCH smaller-20 acres. I have relatively closed canopy from thick pines and collection of pine needles/straw on the forest floor. I am in process of getting sun in by drilling and killing with glyphosate and will be downing trees soon. I have no desire to harvest any of the pines for profit. I am, however, unable to burn so would like to know will clearing pines and opening up for sunlight result in good growth of native plants on forest floor without burning?? Thank you!

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Рік тому +1

      Exposing the soil will work but not as good as the use of fire. Maybe you can start with some very small fires with great fire breaks - like 10' by 10'.

    I’m in northern Arkansas and have just done a lot of hack and squirt on lots of big mature gum and some elm. These mature woods also have lots of white oak. I anticipate a lot more sunlight this spring. I’m hoping to burn as soon as weather allows.
    One question. Should I just let the existing seed / vegetation take over in these sunny areas in the woods or are there seed mixes that would be beneficial to scatter in some of the more open areas ?

    • @GrowingDeerTV

      Nice work! I'd give it a year or two and see what native species come up! Often there's no need to plant a crop. It's often good to plant at least a Hidey Hole plot to attract deer and make a bottleneck.

It's not surprising the fact that most people don't want to work for anything these days. They just want it given on their own terms. Best of luck on your endeavors of phase 2. God Bless.

    How many calls did you get from the neighbors what is the optimum optimum humidity for a burn and wind speed

    • @usernamehere6061
      @usernamehere6061 Рік тому +2

      Depends on the fuel. Native grass will burn with substantially higher humidity than timber will. Where you may get away with 45+ humidity in dry native grass you will need closer to 20 to get a good timber burn. This is good to know because if you are burning grass you can know with higher humidity you can rest easy knowing your fire will not escape into the woods and get away from you. Same with a recent rain... you can more safely burn "finer" fuels and anything in the timber will be unavailable to burn.
      As for wind, consistent winds are what you want. 5-8 is perfect... anything above 12-15 beware lol.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Рік тому +1

      No calls during this fire. Our neighbors are used to us burning. The weather conditions depends on the fuel load, size of unit to be burned, etc.

    I don’t have anyone to help so is there a group that can offer assistance in my state? Where would I start? I live in Tennessee.

    • @usernamehere6061
      @usernamehere6061 Рік тому +2

      Idk about TN. In Kentucky they have a prescribed fire council that works with the DNR to teach landowner courses on prescribed fire. It costs $75 to attend and you must pass a test at the end to be able to be a "crew member" on a DNR burn. Allows for great hands on experience and KY DNR is also pushing hard for co-ops and getting landowners equipment to share with neighbors to help one another burn.

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Рік тому +1

      There are more prescribed fire associations popping up throughout the USA. I'd ask the local NRCS office about assistance in your area.

    Could you not get any money for the cedar lumber??

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Рік тому +1

      Ryan - I wish there was a market. If the cedar is high quality and very easy to get to, I can sometimes sell it. Hauling off logs hauls off nutrients from the site. Fire releases the nutrients. So, if I can sell the cedar, I'm OK to return the nutrients to the soil.

    No way I could burn on my property in Northwest Wisconsin. I'm on the edge of big woods. One of the biggest fires in Wisconsin history traveled less than 2 miles from my place. What else would you suggest?

    • @GrowingDeerTV
      @GrowingDeerTV  Рік тому +1

      Jerry - When was that fire? Recently? There's not a good replacement for fire. Herbicide can be used but that's a lot more work and expense and doesn't remove the duff from the soil to stimulate new growth.
