In response to all comments directed towards Muslims and immigration: Firstly, this is not a political channel. The fact of the matter is Sweden is an extremely safe country. My experience here has been very positive in many aspects, regardless of what people may read or hear about Sweden in the news. Secondly, it is true that Sweden has taken on an astounding number of immigrants, especially when the overall size of the country is taken into account. There is no doubt this poses challenges, some of which have had an effect me personally. (Even with a Master’s degree and a job offer I had to wait over 4 months for a work permit) With that being said I have worked with students from many war torn countries: Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia just to name a few. They are some of the nicest and most well mannered students I have ever had the privilege of teaching. And after hearing their stories, hardships, and things they’ve had to go through in their home countries I have to applaud Sweden for making the effort to give these people a better life when no other country would offer a helping hand. Whether or not we agree with how Sweden has handled the immigration situation (again this isn’t a political channel and I’m not inclined to comment on this) I think we can all appreciate the fact that at the end of the day they’re trying to offer the chance at a better life to those in need.
The funny thing is that we are already taking care of this problem. Immigration has been slowed down since last year and we are looking to help the INTEGRATION for these immigrant communities now instead. Sweden isnt on fire people, get real.
The majority of stories saying how terrible things are in Sweden originate in the USA. I live in the UK, but work takes me to the USA and I often go to Sweden on holiday. I don't feel safe or comfortable in the USA. Sweden's biggest slum, Malmö, is a veritable paradise compared to San Francisco, Boston, Chicago or New York. I have never felt unsafe in Sweden. The worst things I have witnessed there are garden variety scams that you see everywhere in Europe and that has more to do with Balkan crime rings than the refugee crisis.
Scrooge McGruel you need to study up. You dont seem to understand the problem associated with the rape statistics such as simply defining rape in sweden and it happening in mostly in controled areas of organized crime.
Spankerdig1 youre so dumb it hurts. You cant even be Swedish yet you write like you know more about it than people who live here. Its called ORGANIZED CRIME and UNREPRESENTATIVE STATISTICS. Go read a book.
Or Iceland! I'm from Iceland but I've lived in Sweden for about half a year now and Sweden is WAY cheaper than Iceland when it comes to just about everything.
Both Sweden and Norway sucks compared to Denmark. Denmark is the best country to live in and have fun (events,restaurants,nightlife...), Norway is good for hiking and the forest (they have the best nature in Scandinavia - it is battling with Finland, but Finns do not have fjords). And Sweden, well it's in between Norway and Denmark geographically but also in terms of mentality: They're not as open as Danes, but not as closed as Norwegians.. In terms of events, you can have fun, but its nothing like DK... Oh and the clothing: they copy a lot the Danish Copenhagen style... The trend in DK becomes the next trend in Sweden after 7-9 months. PS: I'm Swedish and for NO reasons would I ever want to move back to Sweden. Denmark is a better version of Sweden in many many ways - politically too.
In larger cities in sweden people don’t say hello to strangers. But if you would come up here to the north (Norrbotten) you would notice the difference. :)
I would agree that it true in the US as well. Though here in the North (Minneapolis, Minnesota) we're still pretty friendly though not as much as before 911.
You have to remember he doing a UA-cam video and a lot of Americans that are jogging in the States would not be waving to the public. In the States people have different habits and a way of life. What some people think is cool others will think maybe that's not a good idea. The States in ways of living are devided.
As a person from Sweden I can confirm that these things are accurate. xD And about that about the English, we start learning English when we're about 7 or so in school and continue for a little more than 10 years (depends on someone's personal choices when you get to choose your own classes after you're 16) and plus, I'm just going to be honest and say that we're generally on the Internet a lot. xD A LOT of TV shows and series, are in English, and you can't forget the youtubers, so that boosts the learning. (The English is kind of taking over though, it's gotten to the point where we have quite a handful of words that are borrowed from the English language, plus some people Swedish-fy some English words)
I've noticed that a lot of swedes use English words throughout the conversation. This is kind of nice for me though when I can't think of a word in swedish haha
Stefan Thyron Yeah, and the tendency to use English words in conversations is getting more and more common. There are some cases where there isn’t a 100% accurate Swedish definition, like for the word awkward, or words like "cringy" where there is literally no definition in Swedish.
Sam The Sham I don't see where I'm "lying"? I didn't say anything about CSN or buying books or anything like that, just about the amount of years you get to study English in "grundskolan". It does depend on where in Sweden you live but the difference shouldn't be that many years. And "pinsam" and "skämmig" aren't really the definitions of awkward to me personally, since you can be in an awkward situation where you're with someone you barley know and neither of you are talking, but are trying to find something to talk about. That's awkward, not embarrassing. I'd rather say that "stelt" is a better translation, but I think that the English word awkward has more definitions that can be used in different situations but within the same category, and that there's no Swedish word to cover them all. And I know that there are Swedish words for fancy, I never said there wasn't for that word.
I’m not Swedish I am English but i LOVE Sweden 🇸🇪Jag älskar sverige!! Edit: OMG Thank you so much! This is the most likes I’ve ever got love you all! ❤️❤️❤️
Don't come Sweden is lost,we have a leftis as PM that have destroyed the finest country in the world. Sweden is not safe anymore, those Leftis and Liberal have destroyed the country😒
hhhh keep in mind the depression and long dark winter , you one million people on anti depressive medicine , rasicm is in every level in society, education, job and even social relationsships
When you said you wave at random people I died laughing!! That's not how it's done here bro haha! I guess we're more reserved in Sweden though, NOT cold, just reserved.... or just cold.
that really also matters on where in sweden u are in stockholm no one cares but in like a smaller town everyon can basicly wave at ppl or say hello when walking by
I wave at random people for fun, it makes them spend all day questioning who it was if they knew me. I also honk the horn and wave especially to good looking girls that are out with their boyfriend/ husband...that is humor!
Seeing all these comments made by ignorant non-swedes makes me lose faith in humanity. A lot of you just sit and get fed with right-wing propaganda and it is quite sad actually. I myself live in a suburb of Stockholm, near Brandbergen which is often described by ignorant people as a "no-go zone". This couldn`t be further from the truth. Sure, we have crime in Sweden. However, if you would compare it to a country such as the United States for example, you would quickly see that the amount of crimes here are far less than the ones over in your "beautiful proud nation". There is infact not a single no-go zone in Sweden. I am a teenager with a very swedish appearance. I dont ever get beat up or threatened, barely any of my friends do either. And when they do, it`s often by other swedes. Just some stats for perspective. Chicago, a city of 2.7 million residents had 762 murders in the years of 2016. The whole of Sweden, which has a population of 9.9 million people had 106 murders in the entire country in the same year. I dont know a single girl friend of mine who has ever talked about being groped or raped by a REFUGEE. Only by people born in Sweden. And when it comes to social benefits. Sorry to break your bubble, but we have a far superior system in place. Sure, our hospitals tend to get a bit overcrowded at times. But atleast we get FREE healthcare which often saves lives, compared to your system where people either die because they cant afford treatment or they have massive debts that might even be impossible to pay back in their lifetime...
It's just americans who talk this nonsense. Guess someone on fox news made some stupid remark sometime. Same shit is said about netherlands. Just ignore them and let them drown in their own misery lol.
Hello, I live in the US, and your comments are very astute. We have a mass shooting here nearly every week and yes, Chicago is one of the worst, along with Detroit and Washington DC in terms of crime. I pay large amounts of money for health insurance that barely covers anything so that when the hospital bill arrives it's ridiculously huge. Hospital bills in my country have bankrupted people and/or forced them into homelessness. Prescription medication prices are so high they're laughable. University education is extremely expensive and our government considers a very small income to disqualify you from grants, and then if your parents didn't save at least $40,000 usd for you to go to college, good luck getting a good job. I know all of this comes out of taxes in Sweden, but at least if I broke my arm I could go to the hospital and not have to worry about potentially losing my car or my house to pay for it. I could've gone to a university and become anything I wanted. You are right on point and I wish my country would adopt some of the ways Sweden and other scandanavian countries do things. Please don't listen to negative responses here, you're so correct. Our elections don't even work, ffs. Jag älskar Sweden, I hope I get to visit some day!
@@Eu-cj8vt wasn't talking about race, just crime rate statistics. Also, according to Wikipedia, Chicago is majority white: "The racial makeup of the city in 2010 was 45.3% white (31.7% non-Hispanic white), 32% black, 5% Asian, and 3% from two or more races. The ethnic makeup of the population is 28% Hispanic and 72% belong to non Hispanic background.[3"
One thing that should be mentioned when talking and comparing the prices in Sweden vs america is that, in Sweden, ALL prices are including tax (moms), where as in america the prices are exluding tax. This means that the price on the pricetag in Sweden is the price you actually pay where as in america it's the amount on the pricetag + tax. This could very well be the reason why it seems that Sweden is more expencive. ☺
Yeah but the issue is right-wingers are obsessed with the idea of Sweden because they have spread conspiracies about it being some hell-hole dystopoia and they badly need it to be true, yet if you interview actual people that live in Sweden for the most part they are happy and healthy and living good normal lives.
Matt Kluvass We wouldn't mind foreigners commenting if they actually educated themselves on the situation first. All we get are trolls who've never been anywhere near here, who don't know anything about our society or history, acting like self-proclaimed experts because some right wing fake news site like Fox or Breitbart ran a propaganda piece against us in order to further their own domestic political agendas. It's gets old real quick. Have you been here? Have you studied Sweden or Swedish culture? Do you follow our political debates? Do you understand Swedish laws? If no, then why would you think anyone cares about what you have to say? Why would anyone listen to you speak on a subject about which you are ignorant?
Feels Bro You know this? How? Because you read it somewhere on the internet? Are you really that stupid that you believe everything you read on the internet?
I spent a number of years living in the Netherlands, and honestly, every thing you listed sounds more like "5 shocking things about living in Northern Europe (except for Germany sometimes)."
Fun to see a 'first impression' perspective done in such a upbeat way (even the criticisms, well done.) With the exchange rate my first beer in Stockholm cost me $9 (the dollar was at 5.5) and shocked me (along with the cost of exchanging money and youth hostels - both in comparison to the rest of Europe). You could argue that the cost of a beer hasn't gone up in 25 years LOL
I've been to the US one time in my life and I was chocked by the crazy high tip that you guys give at the restaurant...it's like paying for another meal almost. I understand that it's a reason behind that but I was still shocked and it was much more expensive to go out and eat in the US than here in Sweden :)
Its more expensive to go out and eat, sure. But you dont have to add tax and you dont have to leave a tip either. So in the end its not that different.
As long as you're eating/drinking out, things are more expensive, especially in big cities. A pizza costs a buck or less in the smaller cities. And since i've never been in Stockholm, I just hear it's more than a buck there. And i've also heard the quality of Sweden's cheap grocery products are the equivalent of America's expensive/high quality grocery products, so there's that.
80-90 crowns for a beer? Dude, you need to come down here to Malmö. You'd be hard pressed to find a place that would charge you more than 50. By the way, that part of "staying in their own place" was very accurate. I visited the USA in 2006 and one thing I noticed, that was different from Sweden, was that my presence was immediately recognized and the store-clerk would greet me in a cheerful voice. Not so in Sweden. You need to adress them for help. That might seem rude to some, but for us it's natural not to impose on other people's "own place" and we will not enter - not even verbally - unless invited (I hope my metaphores aren't getting to complicated).
When I was younger growing up in Sweden, the store clerks used to come up and ask if I needed any help. It felt artificial and intrusive and almost as if they just wanted to make sure I wasn't shoplifting. They've stopped doing that now, I guess the friendly approach was too much for Swedes, and the store clerks who of course were also Swedes were equally as uncomfortable about it. :)
If done 10-15 years ago it would have been accurate, but now it's like ignoring a giant elephant in the room. These days you don't want to walk alone at night through certain areas of the towns. It still is not that much worse than in most other countries but Sweden used to be exceptionally safe back in the days and now it's an ongoing change towards the worse. Swedes under the age of 25 might be too young to be aware of this change but for those of us older than 35 it is very much apparent. I feel sorry for the kids these days because the childhood during the 80-90's was way better. Today's youth do not know what they are missing.
Dan Fors Couldn't agree more! I tried living here for 3 years and I find it absolutely impossible. Of course the Swedes warm up to this guy much more because he's from the US and Swedes realy love America. I come from the Czech Republic and Swedes looks so much down upon us Czechs. I've even got asked if we have Internet. We have free schools and student support as well and apart from Sweden, we have realy good, accessible and FREE health care. The maternity leave is 3 times longer. And we've had wireless credit cards for 6 years now where as in Sweden they introduced it recently and only a handful of places accept it. The guy in the video said that he's been living in Sweden for 5 months so of course he's still excited. I was too in the beginning but after a year I realized how many misleading information is out there about this country. And honestly...judging people by how they dress is realy superficial so yeah, he'll fit in well with the rest of the arrogant Swedes.
The viewpoint is that crimes have come up, but statistics do not really agree. " www.expressen.se/gt/ledare/csaba-perlenberg/grat-inte-for-otryggheten-goteborg/ Starts with SD complaining and of course the supporters (mostly motivated by fear and ignorance). They gain political traction which in the end makes S and M ape after too. The result is that doomsday prophecies are just about everything that is heard and parties have to talk tough on crime just like politicians in USA have to appear "tough" on defense. It makes everything dumber. www.expressen.se/kronikorer/alex-schulman/jag-ryser-in-i-margen-av-moderaterna/ www.aftonbladet.se/a/jPBRrq
1.)SWEDEN has one of the highest ISIS recruitment rates per Capita in Europe, according to this BBC report. ua-cam.com/video/0_7puwX_Pw4/v-deo.html 2.)Many migrants come from countries where the schools teach them to be RACIST against Jewish people FORMALLY: (Palestine, Syria, Iran, etc.). ua-cam.com/video/4mWX8VB18nI/v-deo.html DENIAL about Islamic Nationalism is not quite the same as Holocaust Denial, but it is denial nontheless.
The “saying hi to your neighbors” part depends on where in Sweden you live. In the smaller cities and towns it’s almost an obligation to always say hi to your neighbors when you see them (at least where I live). In the bigger cities however it can be very different, and I’ve even noticed myself when I’m visiting bigger cities that the people are more “cold”.
It's not that we are not friendly to random people but I think it's a bit "fake" and the that is a bit the way most Americans are, fake smiles and fake kindness. we can still be polite without the "fakeness" ( not talking about the clerk giving a smile at the customer etc. ) I lived in US for about three yrs and visiting on a regular basis. However there are good things and bad things in all countries.
Yeah the Americans over-do their emotions, but Swedes definitely under-do them (just saying Hi and How are you? is enough but no). Swedes are cold but that concerns mainly the youngsters: They're quite insecure and have not been enough educated on greeting people.
James, sad to hear about your experience if you mean Swedes are something about asses...I got my fare share of Brits since my days back in the 80's when the legion was swarmed by UK, I guess the saying "what comes around goes around" could be the cause? Threat people like shit and trust me Swedes can treat people like shit back. Just because we're not "loud" and take space I can assure we can be rude if treated bad, but there are exemptions to rules in everything and that goes for Swedes as well, there are plenty of a-holes here as well and especially the newer "internet" generation, they never learned what consequences are the worst that can happen on Internet is that you get blocker, banned etc. But hey, have a safe trip and glad you get back to your happy place ;)
Yea I know about it since I had an American fiance and we both lived in US and in Sweden, however with fake I do not really mean fake but more like not a genuine smile. We Swedes in general do not smile at things we do not have reason to smile at, we seem to be a bit uptight etc. But for example, I was raised by my grandpa and he always said, "don't talk if you don't have anything to say...people talk to much" with that he meant not to not talk but do not waste time and air yapping. I think we are a bit the same in many other ways, I do not waste "love" on strangers but then I give those I hold dear so much more instead. So more as put effort into what counts and do not waste time and effort that you good give to something that might deserve it, sort of. That maybe came out a bit harsh but something in those lines.
Andy Woohoo German here. I can't really compare it to other places that much but even in my own country I kind of feel out of place. I smile or greet people on the street in my village all the time(not like all people when I'm out, just in my neighbourhood) and rarely do they smile or greet back. And I don't consider it being fake myself, although I know some people do this stuff to look nice when they're really not so much. I just think it's polite and on the rare occasions people do smile or greet back, you can see that they are happy about it. Sometimes I wonder if all the influence from watching a lot of TV shows and such has taught me certain things or what it is.
I really love your videos Stefan! My plan is to move to Sweden. I feel the Swedish way of living fits more to my personality. All the times I get off from work I spent in Sweden. My homecountry is Belgium but the time I spent in Sweden and the more info I get about living in Sweden... it always makes me feel homesick to Gothenburg. No country is perfect but this country feels to me like home. #LiveLagom
Alexandre Cassis many of us don't know what's best for the country. Accepting refugees is not the best! Bust sadly many here are too stupid to realize that it's destructive to have open borders
Your pinned comment was very nice and I couldn't agree more. Like you're saying, Sweden's comparatively a very safe country. It breaks my heart that the picture people actually have of Sweden is that what foreign news channels (with a hostile attitude towards immigrants) show. I'm very proud to live in a country that sees to the fellow human in need in immigrants, and not as a number in an economic system. Though (*getting a little political*) I'm sincerely concerned about the big support to the well-known hostile party in Sweden...
Well no, I think you've missed the point. And what does "cards" mean? My point is that you can't possibly know who's responsible for anything. Hence the importance of impartialness and humility. Also, I think condescension, that you're expressing here, has a big role in the hostile environment that internet is a lot of times.
Du har helt missat poängen. Poängen är inte att Sverige nu är otryggt. Sverige är väldigt tryggt jämfört med andra nationer. Poängen är att det blir otryggare och vad man kan göra åt det.
American media would have us believe that every country in the world that is not the U.S. is dangerous. Statistics I pulled from Google articles just now: Gun deaths in Sweden have quadrupled from 2012 to 2018. There were 37 gun related deaths in Sweden in 2018 (whole country) Gun deaths are down in Los Angeles for a five year low or 256 gun deaths in 2018 (just in Los Angeles)
@@taitjones6310 Well gundeaths in sweden can't really be compared to the US, For one everyone can't own a gun in sweden,We do not have it in our constitution that every swedish person is allowed to bare arms. So ofcourse there are less gundeaths in sweden, the important thing is that they have increased, It shows a pattern. That's what statistics are for.
@@awesomejimthethird Yes, gun deaths can be compared from one country to any other. What else would you compare them to ? Apples? Tomato sauce?? It's a reflection of the stability of a country's culture. And for starters its "bear arms", not "bare arms". And no it isn't legal anymore. That is a misconception from people who don't live in the US. One, you have to register to own a weapon, and anyone with a felony conviction in their life is not allowed to own one. Secondly, the majority of gun deaths are from people with unregistered weapons. Which means they are all purchased on the black market and it is thriving. The reason that you can compare US to Sweden (and should) is that a market for anything pops up where there is a demand for any product. Economic instability breeds crime and crime demands weaponry. The reason we have more gun deaths here is because there is more inequality, and hence more crime, and therefore a demand for weapons. The "Right to bear arms" is not written into our constitution for the purposes of hunting, shooting for sport, or even self defense. The Right to Bear Arms was written in so that the citizens would always have more weaponry than the Government and would be able to rebel and overthrow the Government when it became corrupted and no longer served the people. Our military oath includes a lines "sworn to protect the constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic", the "domestic" part of that was originally meant to refer to corruption within the state, although in modern times the meaning has been twisted so that now people take "domestic threats" to mean anyone who opposes our corrupt state.
English as a subject in school starts in 3rd grade at age 9 here since the late 60s. In the 7th grade students can chose a third language of their choosing usually German, French or Spanish. The subtitles on TV are of course helpful but I don't think learning languages are the reason we do it this way. English has been a subject in school here since 1850s (I googled). Before TV there where movies with subtitles. Compare this to eastern Europe and there's no English - period. In 1939 we changed the official second language in school to English (from German). So I'm just assuming it would have been very awkward to have Swedish actors do voiceovers in Swedish. Everyone can read and we don't miss out on Humphrey Bogarts original voice - a win win. 👍
The info I could find said English is obligatory from 3rd grade and in some areas they start even earlier. I never checked on the 3rd language so I don't know if that is now obligatory from 6th grade or if that too is a local thing.
Oh! That´s really interesting! I thought the whole country had English from 1st grade today. But maybe it still is very local. Where I live (Piteå, Norrbotten) the schools begin with english in 1st grade (at age 7). Even I, who started school way back in 1991, had English in first grade. The third language begin in 6th grade here.
Ok I just went with the info I could find. Maybe it was outdated. I just wanted to make a point that subtitles and English sound of course is helpful but that other factors are at play too.
My biggest surprise the first time I visited Sweden was the fact that English is widely and well spoken there. Everyone speaks English there. Additionally, many Swedes are multi-lingual. I was able to converse with a Swede in Spanish.
i live in sweden and if you order a beer that’s 80 krowns you must be going to one hell of a expensive bar do they have like rom and caviar in the beer
elliot sjoblom It blows but that's pretty normal for a beer from a "standard" brewery, especially if you live in the bigger cities. I've paid 119 crows for a craft beer (15 usd ..) in Gothenburg, not intentionally though hehe..
Nice video , you'll soon learn to walk around swedish finances xD a beer and food is only expensive if you don't know the places ... All in all , hope you enjoy Sweden 👊
Nice to hear as I am a Swede. What I find I miss whenever I go abroad for a while is the seasons. I love that they are so diverse (at least in the middle of Sweden). I agree we can be percieved as somewhat cold when walking down the street. But it depends where in Sweden you live to. Hope you enjoy your stay however long you decide to be here. :)
I enjoyed this so freaking much because I get to hear the opposite culture shock. I moved from Sweden to the US and you hit the nail on the head. Now, I'm from outside of Umeå in the north where there are a lot of small towns and a lot more people willing to interact with a stranger than in bigger cities or the south. Here in Minnesota I feel like there are traces of that, but yet again I'm in small town life kinda. We have had lovely strangers stop their day to help and it felt so home! The nature is super similar too, but.. I still had a major culture shock. Biggest one, beside measurements, is tipping. It's been 5 years and it still intimidates me. Another is the pride. I used to fear being proud of my country because then you will be called a racist, but over here I could be proud finally and it was liberating and definitely improved my confidence. I no longer had to be afraid of speaking my mind, to stand out, and I wouldn't as easily make a scene. I didn't have to be lagom, though I did land back on it after unleashing pent up self expression. The wildlife was a culture shock.. I miss hedgehogs and Swedish squirrels, I do love opossums, eagles, turkeys and hummingbirds. I miss clothes in my tiny size that looks grownup! And yes the prices, I struggled to not overspend because everything felt so very cheap. I struggled so hard during the withdrawal of Swedish coca cola flavor, the candy and the chocolate. I most definitely miss using my language verbally.
The comments here makes me sad... we have ALOT of immgrants, some are my best friends and they are great! Some are loud and more intense but they aren't raised in the same standards. Seeing all the ignorant people yelling about all the bad stuff someone told them just makes me feel bad. If they think Sweden is in such a bad state even though it's one of the best places to live shows how bad they are being treated by their own goverments. Ignorance is terrible!
ClassicAdden you are being lied too. Police are hidding crime rate figures from the general public. Same thing happening in the UK. 1000 of girls were groomed by Pakistani men and the police and bbc hid the truth for as long as possible. Same thing happening in Sweden and many other wealthy European countries. Time to take the red pill. It is time to wake up. If you need the truth, let me know.
I know the truth, i just don't rant about it online. I will defend my country when people go out of line because it's the right thing to do. Immigration is a problem, but people are getting told that there is basically a war going on and people are getting shot in the street. Sweden is one of the safest places in the world and people shouldn't be lied too. I'm a police officer so i know the numbers. I just try to be a good person by any means.
Then I can only hope that the media tells the truth in your country. In my country (Netherlands) maybe not so great media coverage. But anyway you are right, your video is not meant to be about immigration. So good video overall.
Jagerya okay then. My name is Odette. I live in uppland and I'm 11 years old. My main interest are anime and video games. My all time favorite food is sushi and all time favorite movie is wolf children. I have ancestors from Austria, Germany and Cameroon.
Yes, swedes can be quite but that's often in a big city an not as much in smaller towns. I live in sweden but out in a smaller area called Älvdalen and here when a person say hi to you is like "OMG a human!". Maybe not so intense but anyways
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO COLLEGE/UNIVERISTY ain't free here. We the taxpayer pay all the bills. If you have a job and pay taxes you know it's not free.
It is free to all and not just a few rich people. Also, I have not heard of any rich people scamming the system to get their kids into a fancy school like the U.S.
Yes and the Swedes love it or they would vote it out. The rich are not getting away by using some tax loophole. Amazon this year will pay no U.S. Federal Income tax.
When we were in New York, the prices was terrible, and we said: ”The prices is so much better in Sweden”. And in Sweden they don’t suggest 20% tip when you are on a restaurant haha😉😉 But the U.S. is incredible tho!👍🏼🇺🇸
Probably, but in general Sweden is a more expensive country than many other parts of the world. I lived in Shanghai for a year, which is one of the most expensive parts of China. A restaurant meal at a descent restaurant went between 20-50kr, a kilo rice at Walmart was about 3-5kr. I lived like a queen for a year on CSN. Rent on my appartment was sadly 5000SEK/month, but I am from Gothenburg and it's hard ti find cheaper apartments for that size. It was almost 70 square metres, for myself. No roommates.
Sweden have a lot of taxes on everything, making it more expensive than some of the other countries in the world. I emigrated, and where I live you get 20 bottles (33 cl) of water for like 10 SEK. I get a pac of noodles for 2 SEK, and a pack of smokes for 8 SEK. I still get the same money in my pocket as I got in Sweden after taxes, as a teacher it’s not a very low salary. I enjoy my new home, very much.
People should specify that "FREE", means a productive third party paid for the goods/services one has received. Say like " taxpayer approved" or "agency subsidized".
In every single country there are ”bad” and ”good” people and i don’t think we should judge a whole country just by the one person you have met or heard of, the same with al countries, not just Sweden.
So you have no idea what the term actually means or from where it came, but still use it as a sledgehammer for some ideological nonsense with even less coherency? Got ya. Fyi, the term Stockholm Syndrome is when a hostage/captive is converted to the beliefs of their captor or starts showing empathy and sympathy for their cause/person. The term was coined after a hostage situation during a bank robbery in the 70's, not the 700's. I.e. It has nothing to do with love, and it has nothing to do with vikings, ancient history, rape, evolution, nor is it something only applicable to women. Good job, otherwise. 8/10 for effort.
hiTo1337 Oh I didn’t know that... Thanks for educating me I looked it and you’re right about the history. Still it does sound rather applicable in the definition Stockholm syndrome consists of "strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other."[2]
The expression comes from a bank robbery and victim situation in 1973 at Norrmalmstorg. Apparently there will be a movie about next year called "Stockholm" with Ethan Hawke as Clark Olofsson. Although most of the film will be shot in Canada. www.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/stockholm/norrmalmstorgsdramat-skildras-i-internationell-storfilm
the reason why we're living at home for a longer time than years back is because there's a lack of apartments in Sweden, as well as jobs. when my parents were young, it was a different story. they could just go out and take a job and take an apartment.
Actually you pay it yourself. When you get a better job you pay it back to the government trough tax. Who then help others get going with their life who then also have higher incomes and are able to pay it back again in their taxes. It costs exactly the same, it just takes a lot of useless stress and worries away. And yes it is a system that the citizens want this way. If they didn't it wouldn't exist would it...
@@bethlarson7144 only 1 mistake? Pretty good for someone for who english is his 4th language isn't it? How many languages do you speak? And yes, that is exactly how it works. That is how a society secures a highly educated and competitive position in the world economy. You have to do better then just "bullshit"! We learned this from the americans after the war.. Back when it was still a sane and sensible country..
I live in a small town in Sweden and the people are very friendly here. The bigger cities are a little less friendlier, but if you keep waving on your runs, I'm sure they'll come around. The reason Swedes speak English well is that they learn it in school starting at the age of 8. Some students learn it sooner than that. English is a required language. You forgot about the health system. That's amazing as well. It cost 300sek ($35) for a visit! The rest is about right. Enjoy Sweden!
@@majapersson5343 no, your English is good! I'm Swedish too and my english sucked when I was your age lol, just keep reading, watch movies and speak a lot and you will be fluent in no time 👍
I think that you might want to clarify that you talk about Stockholm. People are not as well dressed and prices are not as high in the rest of the country. Always interesting to get foreigners’ perspective!

Hi im actually from sweden myself and i think the food is much better here them in the us. And there is no time i said hi to an old lady only because there so sweet.
Speaking only for myself as an Swedish-American ... my parents (1) paid high attention to the way we were dressed. (2) to this day, once I establish a friendship, people tell me that at first they thought I was standoffish and hard to get to know. I’m still rather reserved until I feel I can trust you (and it takes a looong time for that to happen). (3) my Marmor, which means Grandmother, would instantly correct our grammar infraction with the admonishment ... “you are born in America and can’t speak proper English? Shame on you! And then instantly correct us ... and she didn’t care who witnessed the correction. 🙄. I’m so proud to be a Swedish American that I fly the Swedish flag outside my house every day. It just was instilled into us from toddler on. 🇸🇪
In Stockholm, people are quite cold and do not respond when trying to talk to them. Stockholm is only a small part of Sweden. Out in the countryside or in small towns, you are much more open and outgoing. Try to go to Norrbotten when you have a holiday. It is a beautiful part of Sweden. MVH Sven Öman in Vidsel.
You get 400$ that you don’t need to pay back. Then u can accept to loan 400$ with no interest. 800$ for a student is good and you can keep half of it. If you also work weekends, you can earn an extra 1000$ easily because you get paid much more weekends
Mathias Hackzell, there is no fee to get in to collage, and you get paid about $300/month as long as you fulfill your studies. You can have a loan of another $300 or $600/month if you want, but this part you have to pay back, as much as you can, based on your income. This money is meant to be spent while you study, for rent, food and beer. It's an important part of the program that anyone can become whatever they like, you don't need to have rich parents paying your education to become a well paid smart person.
I'm trying to learn Svenska so I can try to get a job in Sweden and move there. I've loved Sweden for so long and just want to be there. So, I love these videos. They help me prepare so much.
Arvid Lundkvist i disagree. But understand you, you're swedish. I'm dutch. And netherlands is best ever now and forever. You know what we don't have in Netherlands? 100+ cars being burned down. But i know elections is coming soon for you guys. So vote sensibly and wisely. Again, good luck.
Good to know as I'm an American who's 19 Percent Scandinavian and that is from Swedish ancestry, now I know why I'm so particular about my appearance and my grooming.
LittleLulubee it is free for the student as the student doesnt pay taxes and the self-sufficiancy comes after you get the education as you get a decent job and dont have a student debt that will take 4 life times to pay. You can argue that you indirectly pay that back through taxes funding other students education once you get a job and I'd agree... But thats not really what he ment and I think you know that too Its actually a good system if you as a student don't miss manage it... Way more preferable than having to live with your parents untill youre 30 cuz you cant afford school AND a home.
What is the point of even going to school in Sweden? The taxes are so high any extra pay you get from being educated will just be taken by the government. Just became a bus driver or something that doesn't require an education. You will have the same standard of living as someone with a degree.
In Sweden we pay significantly more taxes than in the US so what is your point? Almost every country in the world pay taxes but there are big differences with how MUCH taxes they pay
Ginga- That IS my point. Most Americans don't want to pay 60% of their income in taxes like the Swedish people. We're not jealous of that system at all. We'd rather pay a way smaller amount in taxes, and CHOOSE how to spend our money. Not have the big brother government make those decisions for us.

You don´t need to be sarcastic at all. Yeah you have heard, and I understand you have never been in Malmoe :-D I have family and friends in Malmoe and I visit malmoe often, and it is a very nice and safe place to go The most dangerous things for ordinary people is the goose (birds) in the parks. Otherwise it is very calm and nice and beautiful to go strolling at "Ribban" , picnic in the parks, and eating out in "Lilla Torg" I love Malmoe
You live in Stockholm. Most people there dress smartly even for grocery shopping. Also, prices in the centre of Stockholm is very high. About studies, half of the money is a loan, the other half is a benefit. That is to live on, rent and such. The studies don't cost anything if you're Swedish. I think you are right about the English, it's just the childrens programs that are dubbed instead of subbed.
In response to all comments directed towards Muslims and immigration:
Firstly, this is not a political channel.
(Even with a Master’s degree and a job offer I had to wait over 4 months for a work permit)
With that being said I have worked with students from many war torn countries: Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia just to name a few.
Remember that when anonymous, the ugly racist trolls show up...

That's very true, or like 'fancy' I heard is another one.
Stefan Thyron Yeah, I’ve heard that one too. I’ve also heard some people say "guys" while addressing a group of people, not necessarily only males.

Thank you.
Noah White lol at you talking about chicago, chicago is in majority pecent black, does it ring a bell for you?
@@Eu-cj8vt wasn't talking about race, just crime rate statistics. Also, according to Wikipedia, Chicago is majority white: "The racial makeup of the city in 2010 was 45.3% white (31.7% non-Hispanic white), 32% black, 5% Asian, and 3% from two or more races. The ethnic makeup of the population is 28% Hispanic and 72% belong to non Hispanic background.[3"
I also was surprised that my friends from Sweden spoke perfect English !!!
No, it actually IS more expensive in Sweden. :P
I love how other people that are not even from sweden have more opinions on our politics than we do
So we can't comment about Swedens politics if we don't live in Sweden?
Can I comment on art if I am not an artist?
That's a big arrogant, isn't it?

I spent a number of years living in the Netherlands, and honestly, every thing you listed sounds more like "5 shocking things about living in Northern Europe (except for Germany sometimes)."
Fun to see a 'first impression' perspective done in such a upbeat way (even the criticisms, well done.) With the exchange rate my first beer in Stockholm cost me $9 (the dollar was at 5.5) and shocked me (along with the cost of exchanging money and youth hostels - both in comparison to the rest of Europe). You could argue that the cost of a beer hasn't gone up in 25 years LOL

I just came back from holiday in Stockholm and calculated the costs. They are indeed comparable, if not more expensive in the US!

Holy shit!? More expensive wwll thats not true
Grabben It’s two dollars more, it’s a lot to cheap Americans. Besides, nothing wrong with being a homosexual.
That's really cool you can relate! I definitely need to come to Mamö with those prices haha
I have been to Malmö before. I saw the twisted tower, but did not buy any beer.
Well most Swedes look good... BUT YOU HAVENT MET THE EPATÖNTAR/EPARAGGARE YET!
They are well groomed to. /dalkulla
Hahahaha så sant!!
It’s so fun to watch what other people think about Sweden, it makes me proud of my home land! Fantastic video!
Thanks so much :)
I clicked expecting propaganda and ended up watching a very wholesome and accurate video about Sweden. Nice.
Dan Fors lugn nu Dan. All brottsstatistik i Sverige har gått ner sedan 70 talet, du är bara bitter.
The viewpoint is that crimes have come up, but statistics do not really agree.

Starts with SD complaining and of course the supporters (mostly motivated by fear and ignorance). They gain political traction which in the end makes S and M ape after too. The result is that doomsday prophecies are just about everything that is heard and parties have to talk tough on crime just like politicians in USA have to appear "tough" on defense. It makes everything dumber.

DENIAL about Islamic Nationalism is not quite the same as Holocaust Denial, but it is denial nontheless.
Nice video. I saw in the beginning that you used footage from my beautiful town, NORRKÖPING!!!😍😍
Norrköping is beautiful!! :D

It's not that we are not friendly to random people but I think it's a
bit "fake" and the that is a bit the way most Americans are, fake smiles
and fake kindness. we can still be polite without the "fakeness" ( not
talking about the clerk giving a smile at the customer etc. )
I lived in US for about three yrs and visiting on a regular basis.
That's known as "Minnesota nice"....
#LiveLagom
Welcome to Gothenburg, girl! We'll give You a show of hands, and, a tour in the archipelago, as well! Our treat! :D

As someone living in Sweden, no they are not. E.g. you have to pay back the majority of your student loan.
That't true!
Alexandre Cassis many of us don't know what's best for the country. Accepting refugees is not the best! Bust sadly many here are too stupid to realize that it's destructive to have open borders
Very nice video and tips about Sweden. ...in Italy most of the young people needs be supported by parents till 35 years 😂
Your pinned comment was very nice and I couldn't agree more.
Statistics I pulled from Google articles just now:
Gun deaths in Sweden have quadrupled from 2012 to 2018. There were 37 gun related deaths in Sweden in 2018 (whole country)
Gun deaths are down in Los Angeles for a five year low or 256 gun deaths in 2018 (just in Los Angeles)

Dudikowski we have it at second grade and third language at 6 grade in my town.
They have English from 1st grade and a third language from 6th grade in my town, Djurås
Ok I just went with the info I could find. Maybe it was outdated. I just wanted to make a point that subtitles and English sound of course is helpful but that other factors are at play too.
But I love looking like trash😭. Sweatpants and leggings are life.
Diffrence is in Sweden we look good in sweatpants 😎😜
You can come and stay in one of our university town. When your population is 50% students pyjama pants in the grocery store at 1 pm is a-okay! ;)
@@QueenMegaera LOL! I'm applying for master's in Sweden so this sounds very good. haha
My biggest surprise the first time I visited Sweden was the fact that English is widely and well spoken there. Everyone speaks English there. Additionally, many Swedes are multi-lingual. I was able to converse with a Swede in Spanish.
Thank you Stefan for this great video! I'm a swed and being so proud hearing this. Keep it up in the future here in Sweden.
i live in sweden and if you order a beer that’s 80 krowns you must be going to one hell of a expensive bar do they have like rom and caviar in the beer
elliot sjoblom It blows but that's pretty normal for a beer from a "standard" brewery, especially if you live in the bigger cities. I've paid 119 crows for a craft beer (15 usd ..) in Gothenburg, not intentionally though hehe..
I live in Stockholm and there are plenty of 29 kr/beer joints around here. Lower your standards and you'll be getting worse hangovers in no time!
It's really intresting to hear your opinion about swedes and Sweden! Welcome to the part of the world we are living in, rock on🤘
Nice video , you'll soon learn to walk around swedish finances xD a beer and food is only expensive if you don't know the places ...
Its mostly idiot with no indepth knowledge, mostly fueled by extreme right wing social media broadcast. Just ignore them

Yes, swedes can be quite but that's often in a big city an not as much in smaller towns. I live in sweden but out in a smaller area called Älvdalen and here when a person say hi to you is like "OMG a human!". Maybe not so intense but anyways
Stefan, a big difference is the health care system too, we do not need an insurance for that since it is free more or less.

Harry McNicholas what do you mean it s free? - where those money came from? from the air ?, they grow in trees ?- they came from the huge taxation !

Stockholm is just expansive. If you were to move to a different city it might be cheaper
"Like a coffe and a piece of cake is like 20€ on Iceland." Its cheap here in sweden it will be 25+€
Sweden have a lot of taxes on everything, making it more expensive than some of the other countries in the world.
Are you sure he lives in Stockholm...? I have no idea, but the footage in the beginning of the video is from Norrköping...
jörgen wiklund I was just comparing because Stockholm is very expensive
People should specify that "FREE", means a productive third party paid for the goods/services one has received.
Say like " taxpayer approved"
or "agency subsidized".
so its free...
It’s so interesting to here someone else’s opinion about your home country. 👍🏼✨
In every single country there are ”bad” and ”good” people and i don’t think we should judge a whole country just by the one person you have met or heard of, the same with al countries, not just Sweden.
Well... Welcome to Sweden then!
:-)
:-)
It's so fun to look at your swedish videos when I'm from sweden!!
I now know why they call it Stockholm Syndrome
Morgan Hayward it’s actually when u fall in love with your kidnapper and it’s called Stockholm syndrome bc it first happened here in Stockholm.
8/10 for effort.
hiTo1337
Oh I didn’t know that...
Thanks for educating me
I looked it and you’re right about the history. Still it does sound rather applicable in the definition
Stockholm syndrome consists of "strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other."[2]

ua-cam.com/video/-7ldT3YL2Kw/v-deo.html
The expression comes from a bank robbery and victim situation in 1973 at Norrmalmstorg. Apparently there will be a movie about next year called "Stockholm" with Ethan Hawke as Clark Olofsson. Although most of the film will be shot in Canada.

I wish I enjoyed it as much as you. It's probably the most boring city I've ever been to.
You wont like it unless you are a muslim !
@ Don't talk shite, ya fanny.
the reason why we're living at home for a longer time than years back is because there's a lack of apartments in Sweden, as well as jobs. when my parents were young, it was a different story. they could just go out and take a job and take an apartment.
2:54 its not the government that pays, its the ppl working in sweden that pays
Right! Nothing is free. Some people just don't understand that concept when it come to public services.

We learned this from the americans after the war.. Back when it was still a sane and sensible country..
Learning Swedish is the most important if you gonna move to Sweden!
Yes
I live in a small town in Sweden and the people are very friendly here. The bigger cities are a little less friendlier, but if you keep waving on your runs, I'm sure they'll come around. The reason Swedes speak English well is that they learn it in school starting at the age of 8. Some students learn it sooner than that. English is a required language. You forgot about the health system. That's amazing as well. It cost 300sek ($35) for a visit! The rest is about right. Enjoy Sweden!

I’m not really that surprised since I live in Sweden xD
In Stockholm, people are quite cold and do not respond when trying to talk to them. Stockholm is only a small part of Sweden. Out in the countryside or in small towns, you are much more open and outgoing. Try to go to Norrbotten when you have a holiday. It is a beautiful part of Sweden.
MVH Sven Öman in Vidsel.
College is not free in Sweden... You take a loan, its good terms, but its taxpayers money that make it that way... So not free at all.
Mathias Hackzell its free for the students
Mathias Hackzell you dont have to take a loan

College in Sweden isn't free, lol. They pay for it through their taxes. And living off the government teat isn't independence or self-sufficiency 😆
But thats not really what he ment and I think you know that too
Its actually a good system if you as a student don't miss manage it...
Novusod Believe it or not, some people do their job because it fullfils them.
I think you should visit Malmo I heard it’s a very nice and safe place to go. (Sarcasm)
They love Malmø so much 'that they all move to Copenhagen !
Yes lot's of Swedes work in swedistan and drive home over the bridge every day to their apartment in Copenhagen' where there is law and order' and no 'forced' political correctness .
Michele Maldonado which western country have they destroyed?
Western countries have literally destroyed Muslim countries.
Michele Maldonado you are such an ignorant idiot
You live in Stockholm. Most people there dress smartly even for grocery shopping. Also, prices in the centre of Stockholm is very high. About studies, half of the money is a loan, the other half is a benefit. That is to live on, rent and such. The studies don't cost anything if you're Swedish. I think you are right about the English, it's just the childrens programs that are dubbed instead of subbed.
