And I couldn't agree more about Hamburg being so clean and the cost of living being so great, and about it having a lot of the hip artsy energy of New York but in a smaller more manageable city. I'm surprised it's not more well-known as a city internationally! Everyone talks about Berlin and Frankfurt etc but Hamburg is so awesome!
That's what I love about Hamburg, not many tourists. I'm American and lived in Munich as an au pair, but didn't like it that much. I much prefer Hamburg or Berlin which is so big, I can avoid tourists pretty easily, haha.
20 years ago no one was moving to Berlin, and Hamburg was one of the most expensive cities in Germany, except for München. The rent was double in Hamburg compared to Berlin, the cost of living exploded since all the Hamburgers and Munich people started to move here, and bought the houses to make them unpayable for Berliners. 😄 So thank you, Hamburg and Munich people, for making Berlin too crowded and expensive? 🫠
For a long time I struggled with understanding taxes. Bottom line is: taxes pay for public services. Lower taxes mean less or lower quality of public services. And since Germany is not the US, lower public services may effect the pre-school system, education system, public transportation, health care, social security, unemployment benefits, waste disposal, workers rights, retirement provisions, public parks, nature reservations, road conditions, public safety, ... everything. Taxes (supposed to) even out social differences. So, after a long time of struggling, I do not see taxes as a burden, but a benefit. Lowering taxes by 3% would benefit me individually by having to pay maybe 150$ less a year, but would have me to have to pay so much more for all the things I need. Strength is in numbers. What, if you don't have children, so why pay for education , you say ? Better pre-school means higher chances of higher education later on, means higher chances of better jobs, means higher chances of higher wages, means more taxes later on, means higher payments to your retirement funds or anything else publicly funded. Took me a while to understand: lower taxes are bad for society. And unless your in the everyone-for-himself states of America, a society is what defines humanity.
Glad to hear that you guys like my hometown Hamburg that much. Didn’t know that costs of living are much higher which scares me a bit because my daughter just headed off to Comox Valley for her Highschool year. I guess I need to increase her monthly payments 😊 We Germans love those little spoons for breakfast because if you go go with your fatty butter knife into to a marmalade jar it would “infect” the content. A day later you would witness a lovely blooming mould in your jar (yummy! 😂).

Compare the cost of child care, the prices of schooling and education, and think about "Elternzeit / Elterngeld" (parental leave and money) and healthcare for the family. Just as a sidenote, that is actually paid by the "high taxes".
Also, I think you chose one of the nicest cities in Germany. Many foreigners want to go to Berlin and I as a German don't get it: I would never want to live in Berlin. Munich is also very nice, but unfortunately much too expensive. The problem with carnival is: people are more approchable there, but they probably don't remember becoming friends with you afterwards 😂

Hi, You're talking about "regular 9-5". It's probably because I'm German, but I've never understood this when I assume 8 hours of work. In the USA/Canada, do You not count the breaks or do You just not take them? I don't know the laws there, either. It would be great if someone could explain that. So, in Germany, it's more like 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. or something similar, in any case still with a lunch break of one hour (30 minutes is the legal minimum for 6+ hours of work). I have to say health system is like in Canada in Germany! Self employed just have to get it back from tax at the end of the year (man kann es von der Steuer absetzen). But most people are employed by big companies and they get it payed each month. Even homeless people are insured at the aok. You should talk to a Steuerberater and safe some money.🎉🎉🎉

A hint to creat those umlauted vowels for you: English has umlaut sounds, usually i before r is almost ever a sound similar to ö. And if you once have this, the other umlauts will occur with time. Trust me.
Taxes are high here. But, the peace of mind you have with what your taxes provide is worth it. You should move to Aachen. Ha! It's a beautiful and very historic city of around 250,00. So, much, much smaller than Hamburg, NY, etc., but it's got all one expects from a larger city. An own opera house. Many interesting sights, restaurants, parks, etc. Also, there are two large universities in Aachen including RWTH (like a German MIT) and Fachhochschule Aachen. The universities, plus Aachen's location (exactly at the point where the Belgian, Netherlands, and German borders intersect) make Aachen a centre for tech industry. With our location we're only three hours from Amsterdam, four from Paris, three from Frankfurt, one from Cologne. Lots of great day-trip opportunities. In comparison with Hamburg, Munich, Berlin, etc. the cost of living in Aachen is much lower. Especially housing. I love it here. But, I've been here longer than either of you have been on this planet. 🙂
All the native English speakers that like Germany seem to be able to speak German fluently. Maybe not perfectly but good enough for everyday life. And they watch German TV and (more important) listen to German news. Ursache und Wirkung?
Please, please, you returnees to Europe, from where your ancestors once set out... Get rid of this bad American habit of leaving the tea bag in the cup until the end. That's not how it's supposed to be and only spoils the taste in the end. You should take part in an East Frisian tea ceremony. 9 to 5 is an 8 hour work day with one or more breaks totalling 1 hour so 9 hours at the office in total.
