I really enjoyed watching this. I appreciate that there is someone very genuine in this field. Thank you for making fashion more than just what is revealed to the eye
Very talented and hard working woman, but I would love to hear an interview from a successful woman in the fashion industry who didn't come from money and family connections. The fashion industry from the poor and working class perspective is a closed door. To see a different financial class represented in this industry would be extremely refreshing.
@@NicLolTorres I like your optimism and would love some examples if you have any to share? I'm always searching for those kinds of perspectives. In my research I haven't seen that very often. For example, in the past 2 years of Vogue US covers, they have hired the same set of photographers on repeat. All but one were light skin individuals, majority was male and majority coming from upper middle class to upper class families. For the female photographers that were hired, almost every shoot was done by Annie Leibovitz (5/7 covers). I have yet to delve into the numbers for the creative directors or other team members, but the overall pattern of industry leaders has told a different story. Of course there are plenty of creatives that didn't come from this background and usually the work is quite a bit more exciting in my opinion, but industry leaders are not actively hiring them for these high profile jobs.
@@charitycardiasmenos2689 I would definitely love to have more examples too. The Fashion industry is very classist on its own and I can attest to this because I am a Fashion Designer myself. The only example I could give you would be a few students and seamstresses. Those are the two types of low-income people that most likely make it into fashion.
We all do. If you look at almost anyone in fashion, entertainment or politics, and you think they got there by themselves, its because youre not looking in the right place.
this is why we have been told the importance of linkedin, im studying business as a first year student and they really emphasised the importance of networking etc.
Thank you because many, many talented fashion degreed people never get a break. They spend years in "internships only to land a job in NYC for a designer paying $35,000 a year." The kids from wealthy parents subsidized their living, hand them connections. They are not more talented or dedicated they just had the road paved for them. There is also a lot of snobbery in fashion. So if you don't come form the right places or gone to the right schools, it's much, much harder.
I feeeeel her on that shoe talk. I can talk about a pair of pants for literally an hour but I’m still trying to find my people in this world who can do the same
Kate is a lot of fun ...I’ve worked with her in several design houses while she was to style for fashion week . Her quirky personality and eclectic taste make her so much fun to converse with and I can remember how enamoured she would even get by talking about chickens
This was lovely. Listening to her speak about clothes and fashion in general, really made me appreciate fashion more. If you see it as art, or as a feeling you want to convey, or show who you are - I totally understand. Maybe you are passionate about home design, or book club, or cooking. Doing those things makes you feel something special that possibly nothing else makes you feel. This has really opened my eyes to how I present myself to the world. Maybe I'm not showing the best me, even if Im trying to be the best me inside - I should reflect that more in my appearance, because I know when I look my best, I always feel better.
So in other words, she got that position with Anna Wintour because of her connections... GREAT. Don't get me wrong, she is talented, but at the same time, her connections play a big part in how far she's gotten.
Cecil that’s how you do it, you work your way up.... Anna literally spoke about training young women so that they are able to successfully work in the industry and do it on their own. Don’t mean to be rude, I just want to u see where I’m coming from.
None of us expect to have a thriving career and operate in a vacuum. You MUST get out there and meet new people outside of your normal social circle. That's how connections are made and unexpected opportunities present themselves.
I think it’s amazing what she’s achieved I think we all should focus on her positive abilities that got her there. Anyone can be placed anywhere it’s up to them whether it works.
I still have fond memories of these fashion videos she did for Dillard's a million years ago. The way she talks about clothes is practically ASMR to me.
Honestly I'm not sure how relevant this is to someone without the obvious friends/family connections this woman had. While it's impressive in so far as she has a passion and followed that passion, she had a lot of perks/help others not born with her privilege would have. Don't take me wrong, good for her, but also not really seeing her story as your overcome adversity to achieve your dreams story that this video seems to be trying to slant towards . But hey, maybe I just read too much into it?
You can know a lot of people and have access to a lot of places, but if you don't have work ethics and talent, those connections won't make it for you. Only she knows how much hard work she invested to build from those connections.
I don't think her they meant to her as struggling but I think they wanted to point out that her family didn't see wanted she wanted to with her life as something series and somewhat disapproved of it.
lol I think this was more of a serendipity thing, like "right place, right time". Had she not had those connections we probably wouldn't know who she was
Thoughtfully done and beautifully told interview. Beautifully shot. Great for people who want more insight into fashion and solid professional advice for anyone.
I hope you do too! Do it for me. I was a secretary and still am . I would have loved to work at a fashion magazine but I didn’t think I could possibly do that. I was always too afraid of failure. At 53 I now know you must try over and over again . So my dear try, try and try again. Work hard and believe in yourself. I wish you all the luck.
As always, these jobs go to the wealthy. She went to her Vogue job interview straight from internship in Tom Ford pants, I mean - come on, let's not fool anyone;)
i 1000% agree with this because this type of "jumping hurdles" is something I've done many, many times. That is why it's who you know. Networking should be your top priority.
yeah, she was 20 years old and she could afford these so its difficult to comprehend where it came from but rich parents. no hate she's lovely; but life has been kind and generous to her
just giving a thought, idk how rich she was and what connections she had etc. but if someone is really dedicated to fashion etc. i could see them buying a few staple interview clothing items that make an impression, instead of having 20 pairs of jeans. people who dont own luxury designer items and arent rich still tend to own soo much clothing, some people just decide to invest in one item instead of 10 cheaper ones. i personally could have afforded to those items when i was 20, and i come from single parent household where my mom raises two of my sisters with not such a high income. but i worked my own money. just bc i have money at a young age, it doesnt mean my parents gave it to me :)
It’s because Connections DO matter, it may not be fair but it is reality. If you had a business and your two options were the daughter of your long time friend or some college student who you’ve never met, you would be more likely to choose your friend’s daughter too.
Powerful women in fashion! I loove when she said, “I’m gonna sit with two women who have degrees from ivy league schools and we’re gonna talk about shoes for 35 minutes- seriously.” YES! Fashion is not flippant. Women who dedicate their lives to creating art for people to walk around in are amazing!
I love her. I asked to dresses myself at 3 and developed an insatiable love for fashion through my grandmother and magazines. I would live to be able to discuss a Tom Ford shoe with an educated woman for 15 minutes!
This is such an informative video. A couple of thoughts. I shall never take no for an answer. Great piece of advice. It's interesting how she said that she couldn't be a stylist in LA. I have found that in my travels, there are certain city's where I just feel at ease with the fashions and overall vibe.
I am glad she talks how much she appreciated being there. Because it's the same excitment for the job I had in my beginnings. Getting an assistant or trainee who's really into the field is quite difficult. It's sad to see that so many young people just want to have a selfie-esque job. But REALLY learning and appreciating the chance to BE THERE and watching and learning not so much.
I loved this video, and I love Kate Young! It was nice to hear about the fashion industry and the start of one of the leading celebrity and fashion stylists.
I think Kate Young comes across as intelligent, extremely talented and passionate about her work. I love her choices. It would also have been good to have seen other celebrities who are not beautiful, tall and young being put into outfits that are game changers for their careers which I think would be more challenging but would show off Kate’s talent even more.
Okay so... real world translation: A middle/high class, white, woman gets a job through her friends' parents connection at the biggest fashion magazine in the world. Her east coast parents were unpleased by her measly position as a postgrad intern at Lynn Franks in London, so they had her fast passed to Anna Wintour's office at once. Initially she was pretty bummed to be leaving her fun and comfortable job in London (we all know how that is). But, she would soon make history in NYC as an iconic stylist and inspiration to many. Thank you Hollywood Reporter, for showcasing white privilege in the fashion industry. You have made it crystal clear.
Great interview. I felt the same way about my experience with AW. I never felt disrespected or looked down upon. I was given an incredible opportunity to please. And I still have that thank you note to prove it.
This is validation for what I want to pursue. This very interview shines light on fashion in its true form. Fashion is a learned culture that must be respected. It far surpasses a simple love for wearing clothes. Fashion embodies personal identity, color theory, global material sourcing, and a visual narrative. I study literature because I know fashion media is not dead.
So in order to be a successful actor it isn't about talent but how you dress? Thank god we don;t require surgeons to be fashion plates to be successful.
She's a class act all the way. So poised and eloquent and such a genuine love for fashion.

Great. Now, where is the 2 hour version, please?

This was incredible, 2 hour version please

Look up Anna Wintour, she told Kate that.

Same. I have such passion for material, construct, etc… but I was told it was vapid and unnecessary obsession.
Candid, cool and a class act. I’ve always admired her as a stylist. Thanks for the peak into her brain!

This is so good ~ more of this pls

Wow, this is so beautiful.
This is so amazing. I feel like I have hope. Like people will stop looking at me weird when I say things like Fausto Puglisi
My first Vogue was 1979 and Brooke Shields was on the cover and inside she had a red bikini. I loved fashion from them on
Great video. She reminds me of Meredith Baxter Birney from family ties.
We could use a lot more integrity like this in fashion to survive the mega brand craze.
She is incredible!
queen of styling
this is inspiring
I wish this was 5 hours long!
I loved this.
My whole family is great friends with her family!
Isn't she the inspiration for Emily Blunt's character in Devil Wears Prada?
That's what the rumour is
Andy's character.
This was fascinating
Needed this. Thank you.
This was so good
This is very inspiring!!
God I love her so much I wanna buy her coffee and be nest friends.
OMG i love it
the connections are just insane
She's wonderful
Very inspirational :D Thank you for sharing. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
