Perhaps they just wanted to know if the dude was new to RP or has a grounding with it as he has other characters. Just because they’re asking if he has other characters or if this is his first doesnt mean he’s goin meta in the brain. They just wanted more information on the “sub”.
Edit: Also you’re making assumptions that the reason they were asking who he was and if he had another character was because they thought it would make a difference on how the person is treated; when there is nothing in their statements or questions that hint to that

I love how rules go out the window for James, no one complains about vdm or anything. And he doesn't complain about being pitted 2 seconds into a chase. They know it's for laughs, and it's hilarious
