Thank you for the video I have finished replacing water pump and harmonic balance wheel (idle pulley) on my 2000 W163, a few comments:
1. Make sure to install hex bolts correctly. These bolts have different length and diameter that they can be easily mis-installed. I had to install twice because the shop which changed my water pump last time didn't have the right bolts in correctly so it failed pre-maturely;
2. Fan shroud can be easily removed to greatly improve working space. Remove the two screws and two clips at the bottom then pull it straight out;
3. I don't find the drain but pulling hose is easy;
4. Scary moment for me but don't over tighten the bolts!
Hello, where did you find the location for the bolts? I have the WIS manual and it doesn't say anything about how to replace the bolts. I think I might have installed mine incorrectly. The M8 Bolts (12mm) are not the problem. The M6 are giving me a PITA!! I have installed the pump 2ice and I still have a coolant leak on the same spot (right under the belt pulley). I am about to give up...
Nevermind, I think I found the diagram.
Smart way to keep track of the various bolts .
Great video, thanks very much. Just a quick note, my truck version (ML270 W163) has a coolant half turn valve which you can use to drain coolant fluid, which I would think it would help a little bit to drain the coolant (I haven't done the job my self..yet). But I loved your video so a big thank you my man!
Hi Alex. Mine has it too. It is very difficult to reach. I guess if I tried it, I could reach it. Also my fear is that I might not be able to close it afterwards. :-)
@@DIYDharma Yes, very good point, I would also be scarred that it would break! and then you are stuck and the only solution if this happens is a new radiator. Thanks very much, I enjoyed the video.
Very helpful video.
you even explained what tools we will need. great job.
Thanks for posting.
This is quite the job! I just took off the fan shroud and the fan with the special tool, it's a combo 32mm/36mm slim wrench I got on Amazon. I changed out the fan clutch, which was very easy it was only 3 bolts holding it in (but you need the special torx/hex size to remove them). Now I need to remove those pulley things and take out the water pump bolts. Glad you posted this video. I need help lol.
Thanks for your comment. I tried to remove the fan shroud but was not able. It looks like it has two fasteners on each side that need to be removed in different directions. but yes, removing the fan shroud does make it easy.
@@DIYDharma The fan shroud is tricky, there's 2 10 mm bolts holding it in place. I don't know how people get it out so easy, I could not do it, my nephew helped. I spent the whole day getting all those bolts out of the water pump and trying to be very careful to map the bolt pattern (also on the serpentine belt). It's finally done but now it's burning oil somewhere lol. I wanna get another car. 😐
thank you for the detailed replacement of these parts
Thank you for your time and instruction in this money saving venture!
Glad to see someone doing preventative maintenance than bein that guy who fixes a thing at a time . Better to be safe than sorry
Thank you so much for your help. Will order parts and follow your instruction
Great Video very Informative 👍
Bolts. They are called bolts. Removing the shroud will save so much time and knuckle busting. Also, use thin layer of gasket maker to help the gasket stay in place. Glad your working on your bbn own car and helping others. Work on your vocabullary, makes it hard to watch lol. Engines have blocks, not bodies. Just a suggestion. Thanks for the video
Getting the fan off is the hardest part of this job if you don’t have the right tools. I would love to see a demonstration on exactly how to do that and the tools used. Your normal wrench, will not fit between the water pump pulley and the 4 bolts holding the pulley. Which makes this job a lot harder than removing the 18? Bolts and couple hoses.
Here is my video on how to replace the serpentine belt ua-cam.com/video/6KOuBCwZRHg/v-deo.html, this shows how to remove the fan with the special tool and the tools I used. Hope it helps.
BenzSUV Thank you !!!!
I've done this before and removing the fan cowling makes ir much easier.
I can't find anywhere that shows how to remove the fan cowling. Suggestions?
I like your very helpful videos thanks,, How come no one ever cleans their engine?
Hi, I would love to clean my engine, it is not that I do not want to. But am afraid. There is so many electronics in the bay so don't want to use any water based stuff. Also, some of the chemicals that are used for cleaning either leave an oily residue or cause the plastic to breakdown faster in heat and over time. I have cleaned the plastic components like the airbox, engine cover, etc., just by using regular household cleaner but nothing that makes the parts look new. Open to suggestions.
@@DIYDharma Hi, I use a good quality degreaser and spray it all over just put a plastic covering over the transmission oil filler cap to stop any water from getting into it. I use a high-pressure gurney /sprayer or house hose with good pressure, I have been doing all the cars I have owned and never had any trouble with water getting in, as most of the components are waterproof to a degree and when you start up the heat will burn off any leftover water as stream very quickly once it gets to operating temperature. it makes the engine a breeze to work on No oil and crap all over the place and helps it run cooler as well. all workshops I've taken the car to like it.
Thank you very much.
FYI, I've had about 9 benzes, including a 2000 ML320 and most all of them have had a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator so you don't have to pull off any hoses to drain.. Don't recall exactly where it was though.
I agree with you - there is a drain plug. It is pink or red, but difficult to get to from the front bumper. It is in front of the radiator on the passenger side. I would need some kind of a tool to reach it so I gave up on it.
THANK YOU 💯👏👏👏👏
Great video. Thanks.
Hi There,
Thanks so much for the video, those two screws for Black Plastic Fan-Cove is one on each side of the radiator. You can reach them from below then all you have to do just pull it up it comes out. Believe it or not I bought a Water Pump from AutoZone with Mercedes Mark on it and it was re-manufactured with life time warranty...
Thanks. Nice find on the water pump at Autozone. I bought a brake caliper for my Lexus at AZ but it was aftermarket and not Toyota.
I think it will be easier to trace the gasket onthe cardboard rather than tracing the pump.
True for the outside ones, but you may miss the ones in the middle/inside. I followed what someone else did. But your trick might work too. Thanks.
Many thanks for this Video it was extremely helpful. Can you advise the best ML320/W163 DIY Workshop Manuel to buy/download
Mercedes WIS
Greatly appreciate the video. I plan on changing mine tomorrow. I was wondering if I put the front two wheels on ramp, do you thing it will help with the job? Thanks you. 👍😀💯
There is enough room there to get underneath without needing to put the truck in ramps. I even went underneath to unscrew the oil pan bolt, which is further back, without lifting the truck. If you put the truck on ramps then the engine won’t be even so you may not get all the fluid out since the hose is facing forward.
@@DIYDharma Thank you soooo much for responding so fast, such a helpful video in details. I watched it like 100 times and i am less nervous about the job now, i will let you know how bad my job goes. Thanks once again. 👏😊
Don’t just watch my video but watch other’s as well. Seeing what others did and did not do would be helpful also. Make sure the screw on the clamp for the thermostat house is tight. Look for any leaks every day for a few days
@@DIYDharma i have watched others, your video is most detailed and helpful. Thank you for the heads up on thermostat. I will keep that in mind. 😂
Got it done like an hour ago. Took me 2 days cause I got the power steering pump done as well. Hey no leak so far and did all the things you told me to do. All looks good. You saved me $1500 at least. Thank you once again.🥳👍💯
Awesome video very detailed. Did you use the pump with or with out oil cooler?
Thanks. My ML320 does not have an oil cooler and therefore does not require the water pump with the oil cooler outlet. I think ti is the 2001 and prior M112 egnines that have the oil cooler - are they may be European/Candaian spec - not sure. But mine does not.
BenzSUV thank you Sir👍 you helped me out a lot with this video and thanks so much for replying . Enjoy your ML 😊 I love mine
does yours have the three hoses with coil connector or just two?
Dennis Mitchell no mine just has two. You must have the m112 engine with the hose for the oil cooler. Don’t know if this is an older m112 engine or a Europe specific engine. But you will have to get the water pump that has an additional hose outlet for the oil cooler

great video thx do you think MB's are easy to maintain ? if you have average auto skills
changing brakes, oil, coolant and brake fluid is pretty much the same for most luxury brands. However, i would say Range Rovers may require special tools or may not follow certain convention. What is good about MB is that they are a well known brand, there is a good user community supporting the trucks and parts are relatively cheaper compared to their counterparts. I have not worked on other vehicles so i can't compare. I am not a mechanic. however, i do a lot of research prior to working on my truck. So it depends on how much time you are going to devote to learning about your MB before you work on it. I actually find it easier to change the oil in my ML320 than my Lexus ES330. Changing the spark plugs is easier too. Although the ML320 takes 12 plugs, and the ES330 takes 6. Good luck.
👍
Do you know the inside diameter of the bottom rad hose? Looks like 1.5.
Thanks
did you put some sealant on the gasket? I have opend up mine. but not sure about the fitting now.
no sealant. the metal is good enough. You should buy an MB or the make that makes MB water pump. After market pumps have horrible gaskets and they leak. I bought a remanu from a mercedes dealer. Sent mine back for savings.
@@DIYDharma I've been working on replacing my water pump in my 2003 ML500 this week and am finally getting around to putting it in today. One question I had was that the Saleri water pump (they make the Grafs also) have two gaskets. There's one small black rubber one, and then a larger flat one. Did you use both gaskets in the installation? I didn't see you put the small one in. But, it was definitely there when I took the old pump off, and there were no signs of the larger one. Kind of confused, and don't want to make a mistake after all it took to tear this thing down.
Does anyone know how much time the book calls for to replace this water pump in a typical shop? I have had quotes by barious and used to wrench on all me vehicles but have screws and rods in my back now and cant manage it on my own? I'm going to Canadian tire this morning and they call for 3.8 hrs which I think is ridiculous and fell if I were still wrenching I could re and re this piece inside 2.5 hrs max with the shroud in tact. Any advice would be appreciated.
According to all datadiy, it does say 3.8 hours and if you change the thermostat, it is literally 2 bolts so plus another 10 minutes. So lets say 4 hours @100 per hour, so $400 plus cost of pump, coolant, and thermostat. If you have not changed the serpentine belt, i would change it, and it should just be the cost of the belt like $30 or so. However, I am sure, the shop will charge you more than $400 for labor - and probably take less than 4 hours if the guy has done it on a similar M112 engine.
Alldata has 1.8 hours for thermostat. It can be done in 30 minutes or less. It takes longer to remove/refill the the truck with 2 gallons of coolant than it does to change the thermostat.
Did it not require any sealant on the gasket to the pump?
No, a sealant is not required, just the metal gasket. It is suggested that you buy a Mercedes pump, or a re-manufactured Mercedes pump, or an OEM (Graf I think) pump. Do NOT buy any aftermarket pumps as they will leak and sealants don't help. I got a reman pump from an authorized Benz dealership, returned mine and got my core charge back. Good luck and thanks for the question.
@@DIYDharma , thank you for the fast response, the metal gasket must have a rubber like sealant embedded on it to seal against the metals I suspect.
@@rdp2370 No rubber sealant, and I did not add any, and no leaks still after 4 + years. Also, depending on the VIN number or year, some might have come with a rubber gasket (not a sealant) that fits into a groove/slit on the engine. however, I think this is the older (pre 2002) engines. Mine does not have a groove to accept a rubber gasket., it is flat and matches the metal gasket.
@@DIYDharma My 2003 ML500 had that small rubber gasket you mention fitting into the groove on the engine. (this clears up the question I asked above).
So no gasket sealer on it?
If you get a Mercedes or OEM (made by Graf I think), you will not use RTV. Make sure you torque the bolts.
@@DIYDharma Thank you. This has turned into one of the most aggravating, stressful jobs I’ve ever done. 😂
there is a metal gasket, mine did come with one and i used. but no RTV sealant or any other paste. One of the easiest thermostats to change also.
It was two gaskets where did the rubber one go
Mine also came with a metal and rubber gasket. I only used the metal gasket. There is no channel/grove, either on the water pump or on the body of the engine for the rubber gasket. I think they are both sent because previous versions of the water pump, or versions of the water pump with the oil cooler outlet might have required the rubber gasket as well as the metal gasket. Hope this helps.
You dont need rubber one.
What's the labor for that job?
Well, it depends. A Mercedes dealer will likely charge you $350 for water pump, $50 thermostat, and 3 hours of labor at $150/hour. so you are looking at $850. An indie mechanic who specializes in Mercs will likely charge between $500 to $600 on the low end.
Help move 320 meresedes water pump and replace
Hi, I don't understand your question. This video is to help in replacing the water pump. Thanks.
Were any of those bolts reverse thread?
no - none of them are. They're all "lefty loosely - righty tighty." I did read somewhere that the pre-2000 W163 had the fan clutch bolt reverse threaded but could not confirm this.
on my 1998 ML320 all the bolts were threaded standard direction.
While I am here I don't suppose you know of any reasonable aftermarket Custom rim dealers in the GTA? Or online? I need to buy new wheels and tires to complete this resto and have found the bolt pattern limits choice unless you decide to have a company machine the specific rim you want to spec for your hub. Hoping to find a larger selection for rims that will fit that are not a custom grind at least.
thanks for the video, but the torque numbers i'm not sure you got those right and you can messup yourengine if you are off a few ftlbs. I think this guy may have the right values for the torque ua-cam.com/video/fSfg5fpCiSk/v-deo.html
I have the following torque values: E14 - 42 Nm, E12 - 25 Nm and E10 - 10 Nm, which is what the guy has in the video link you sent, at time 12:33. So where do you see mine to be different. I do agree though, incorrect torquing may cause the water pump to leak or if you over tighten it, may be difficult to remove or break. These are all in Nm, not Ft. lbs. The one thing I would suggest is a better torque wrench that is more granular at the lower torque range between 5 Nm to 30 Nm.
How long did you take BenzSUV?
It took me over 6 hours b/c I am not a mechanic so was being extremely cautious and time was also spent in taking the video. Now that I am familiar with it, if I had to do it again, I can probably do it in less than 3 hours plus clean up time. And I'm not even a mechanic.
Whether you are going to try it or have a mechanic do it, I would suggest getting MB pump or a remanufactured MB pump or the pump that is made by the OEM, i think it is GRAF. I heard that aftermarket pumps tend to leak.
Thanks for the reply. Just as and FYI to you and others, I negotiated 3hrs with the garage and managed to get it and the belt done for under $600. I think my initial estimate (given I have experience wrenching on many types of vehicles in the past and swapping out water pumps) is likely not too far off at around 2.5-3hrs if you are a mechanic whom has done this Re and Re before. So your 3hrs is right in the ballpark for a 2nd run IMO.
At any rate your video was helpful and gave me a bit of info to support talking the manager down from 3.8 to 3hrs even though they took longer to do it. Most large garages like that inflate hours anyways but the pump cost was reasonable. I'm moving to a new place on the lake that has a sweet detached shop and will likely work on the Benz there myself so will try to add any helpful vids as well if I do. Anything to keep the MB crooks out of our pockets. Their prices are the worst in the industry bar none. Makes sense for us late model owners to stick together and help each other out..,Lol. Cheers.
PS- The kid who worked on it also left shroud in so I would think if knowing how to remove that quickly was in your knowledge it would definitely be a 2.5hr swap or less.
What size tool was used to remove the fan from the water pump?
it is a 36mm wrench. And i bought a set that holds the three screws of the water pump so that it is secure while you use the wrench to turn the fan to unscrew it. I bought my wrench set on ebay but you could also check your local auto parts store (IE: advance auto parts) to see if they would rent one.
Inch 3/8 use adjusted wrench
Go to left
I did something similar with Avasva solutions.
I've removed all the bolts to my knowledge but I cant take the old pump off to save my life I really hate Mercedes right now
Did you try wedging? Don't wedge between the pump and the body of the engine, this may chip the aluminum body where the water pump gasket rests and you may end up with a leak. But try putting a screw driver inside one of hose holes and pry against the body or hammer the screwdriver towards the radiator. Instead of a screw driver try a hard piece of plastic or wood so you don't damage the water pump in case you are stuck with it b/c you are not able to replace it. Good luck.
BenzSUV ill try it thanks ill let you know how it goes
So I had another bolt to remove I feel dumb couldn't see it until I moved that big piece of plastic the fan was in Gave me allot of room to work but now I need to put the belt back on what's the piece I need to loosen the tension called?
Sherman Tank it is the tension pulley. Please see my video on serpentine belt replacement. You use a 17 mm socket to turn it counter clockwise
LOL!!!!
Any one know the tork specs
Zuzu Pali Hi, please read the comments below for torque specs.
It wasn’t that hard! I even took couple short cuts good so far
Need more light dude
I've got a 2003 ML500 2003. Are the instructions the same for the bigger engine as are for this one?
Yes it is. The V8 is an M113 engine so the part number may be different. Am not sure if the ML500 has an oil cooler or not. if it does, than it is another hose to manage.
@@DIYDharma Saw your response from the previous question a couple of years ago. No oil cooler on the ML500, and the pump is the same as for the ML320 and ML350, among others.
