  • Here’s a song I wrote and performed again in Old Norse. Part four of my Sagas in Song series, this one is from Snorri Sturluson’s Saga of Saint Olaf - the saga is enormous, almost 300 pages, so it was quite interesting having to condense it.
The refrain is based on St Olaf’s famous warcry: "Onward, onward, Christmen, Crossmen, Kingsmen!", as recounted in the saga.
He performed many miracles in his life and his body didn't decompose after his death, leading to his official recognition of Sainthood. He's

    Old Norse lyrics:
    Fram! Fram Kristmenn!
    Fram! Fram Krossmen!
    Fram! Fram Konungsmenn!
    Fram! Fram fyr Noregsland!
    Hann fekk heilaga anda,
    var sterkasti allra,
    hilmir sinna manna,
    yfirkonungr lands.
konungr Noregs at eilífu”, þá sigldi hann.
Yfir þeim eignum sátu útlendir menn, er átti faðir
Óláfs ok hans faðir, hann ætlaði at heimta fǫðurarf.
    Fram! Fram, Kristmenn!
    Fram! Fram, Krossmen!
    Fram! Fram, Konungsmenn!
    Fram! Fram, fyr Noregsland!
    Var honum vel fagnat.
    Vilði ei gjalda skatt,
    en verja vilði hann
    oddi ok eggju land.
þóttisk eiga at erfðum Noreg allan ok vestrlǫnd breta.
    Fram! Fram Kristmenn!
    Fram! Fram Krossmen!
    Fram! Fram Konungsmenn!
    Fram! Fram fyr Noregsland!
    Óláfr hefr val.
    Danakonungr skal
    Noregsfólkit herja
    með mikit mannatal.
Knútr dró saman óvígjan her í Danmǫrku
ok krafði þess, at Óláfr gerisk maðr hans.
Bauð Knútr fram ofrfé, bœndr urðu blekkðir.
Óláfr krafði sér liðs, en bœndr snørum frá.
Tók ráð þat at fara ór Noregi, þaðan sigldi í Hólmgarð.
Vilði hann einhvern dag fara aftr til óðala sinna.
    Fram! Fram Kristmenn!
    Fram! Fram Krossmen!
    Fram! Fram Konungsmenn!
    Fram! Fram fyr Noregsland!
    Danir váru sterkir,
    Óláfr var án liðs,
    en Óláfs konungstígn
    var gefin af Dróttni.
vegligr dauði at falla í orrostu með liði sínu.”
    Fram! Fram Kristmenn!
    Fram! Fram Krossmen!
    Fram! Fram Konungsmenn!
    Fram! Fram fyr Noregsland!
    Haraldr hans bróðir
    ok trúlyndir drengir
    komu á fund konungs,
    er hann í land sigldi.
Óláfr ok herr komu út á Stiklastaði.
Hjálm gylltan á hǫfðu ok krosslagðan skjǫld hafði.
Þórir hundr fjándi kallaði: “Fram, bóandmenn!”,
en konungsmenn æpðu þá heróp ok mæltu svá:
    Fram! Fram Kristmenn!
    Fram! Fram Krossmen!
    Fram! Fram Konungsmenn!
    Fram! Fram fyr Noregsland!

Edit: Now on Spotify etc :-) Here’s a song I wrote and performed again in Old Norse about Saint King Olaf II of Norway, known also as Norway’s Eternal King. The refrain in the song is based on St Olaf’s famous (and awesome) warcry: Onward, onward, Christmen, Crossmen, Kingsmen!, as recounted in the saga.

You should do Were you There when they crucified my lord or Amazing Grace or something in Old Norse. It's not really my preference( Althought i do like the music, I prefer Latin Chants, even though I'm Episcopalian) I think it'd be really weird to hear.

    Absolutely wonderful!
Finally someone honours our Eternal King's memeory in the modern age, and in our ancient tongue no less!
I love that you emphesise both how important Olaf was for establishing Christian laws, but also our national independence from foreign rule!
If you ever do a song of his son, Magnus the Good, I'd love it if you emphesised his importance for Norwegian Independence.
The Norwegians seeing how oppressive the Danes are with their heavy taxes, unjust laws and differentiation between Danes and Norwegians, choose to have king of their own people. And who do they choose but none other than the Son of the Saint himself, Magnus Olafsson!

The word is actually both a profession and an action - in the sagas, you see people being referred to as a "víkingr mikill", i.e. "a mighty pirate", but it can also be used to denote the action of raiding/plundering in the form of "fara í víking", literally "to fare a-viking", "to go raiding". So it's both

One of my favourite scenes from the Saga of Olaf "den Heilage" Haraldsson:
*"Then rose Dale-Gudbrand up and spoke: “Where is now your God, o king? I think that now he holds his chin lower than before; and it seems to me that you are all not as overconfident as you were yesterday, least among all that horned man (called as such due to his Mitre) you call “bishop”, who sits there among you, but now is our god come, who governs all, and he looks on you with sharp eyes, and I see that you are now full of fear, dearing not to look up with your eyes. Throw now away your supersition and believe in our god, who has you in his hands”, and so endeth the speech of Gudbrand. But the king sayeth to Kolbein, so the peasants could not know of it: “If perchance it happens that during my speech all direct their attention away from the idol, then you shall take your club and deal him a blow with all your might.”"*
*And then the king stood up and spoke: “Much you have spoken of to us this morning; and you wondered yesterday about the fact that you may not see our God? But if you only wait a little while, he will come to us. You scare us with your god, who is both blind and deaf and can neither save himself nor others, and cannot come or go anywhere, except if he be carried there by you, and I know that in a short moment he shall meet with great misfortune; and look now to the east: there comes now our God with a great light.”*
*And then the sun came up, and all the peasants looked towards it in astonishment. But in the same moment Kolbein the strong dealt with all his might a blow so powerful to their god, that he burst asunder and fell into pieces. And there came out of it mice big as cats, as well as worms and toads and rats. The peasants become so afraid that they fled, some to their ships and some to their horses."*
