I love that they credited the specific animators for each character before the film even started proper. Richard Williams made sure the real talent got their proper respect. 💜
Well he was an animator himself and many great animators who inspired him worked on this. I’m really glad because a lot of the time people don’t recognize that there is many talented people who bring these drawing to life.
fun fact: this movie was actually made primarily by people with experience on stage, particularly people who had worked on broadway, which is why it's a little bit of a technical train wreck. richard williams actually left the project before the film was finished, but still got to have his name on the final product. a lot of the other animators weren't really a fan of him and reported that he cared more about individual pieces looking cool than he did about visual consistency and characters being on model (which is, again, very obvious in some parts). and a funny easter egg: at the end when the tentacle monster is pulling the pirates off the ship, the one that gets grabbed last when the looney king yells "and fire him!" was a caricature of richard williams!
I found this after finding "raggedy andy being the only man ive ever loved for 6ish minutes", in my recommendation on youtube, but I have to admit this movie is so pure from how they animated the characters.
Did you guys know that a woman named Thérèse "Tissa" David did the animations for Raggedy Ann? She was one of the first female animatora to animate a major character in an animated feature film. She was also second female animator to direct an animated feature film. She was known to be a pioneering woman in animation.
Ohh thats so cool!!! Her name was mentioned right in the beginning :) all the animators were credited in the intro so ppl wont miss their names even if they didnt watch the end credits and I think that is just the best
No. The first female animator was Ruthie Tompson and she worked for Walt Disney in the 1930’s but was uncredited. She worked on Snow White and Dumbo and many others. She passed away earlier this year at 111.
I love how the characters move around based on the type of toy they are in general Like the Raggedy's are all clumsy and floppy and automated ones are more rigid and limited. It makes them more like the toys they are and the animators need a damn raise cause of how fun it is to watch all the toys move in their own unique ways
So this is basically the Raggedy Ann and Andy’s music adventure in a nutshell: *1: Babette and Ann are simping for eachother* *2: the camel is depressed* *3: The king of looney cant take a joke* *4: pirate kidnaps the person he is in love with* *5: everyone doesn’t pay attention to any of that cuz there too busy simping for Andy*
I’m sorry but I would not see Babette interested in Ann honestly she was too focused on her homesickness and did not found anything nice coming from her and the way she treated the other toys, specially in how she first treated The captain. Y’all also Ann wanted more to sympathize with her because she is new around and wanted to make sure she felt comfortable around the house. Ann wanted to give Babette comfort and a friend so she would feel more at home. It’s okay that you make a headcannon of them been a couple there’s nothing wrong with that. But in all honesty we can’t ignore that Babette was been a very awful character to the rest of the cast.
@@TheSwanqueenAndTheEldricth The captain kidnapped Babette, did you forget that? What the fuck, I wouldn't be nice to him either. Besides she apologized to Ann at the end of the movie, and the captain clearly didn't hold her throwing him in the brig against her. He acted like a clown and she put him in his place. Were you paying any attention?
The part when they say they're gonna fix the camel's legs and Ann says "no, we like him the way he is" and the camel's like "speak for yourself i wanna walk again"
There’s a certain irrepeatable mysticism to lost art like this. It’s like finding a whole world in a jar you found in the attic. You can’t recreate it, or explain it. It just exists as if it were always there. Abandoned and waiting to be found again.
they all sound soft-spoken when they arent singing and in most scenes. that makes sense because you definetly wouldnt want any of the people knowing you're alive. there's something so satisfying about it to me

the amount of detail in the animation, drawing anne's polka dots on her dress over and over must've taken so long same with the stripes on andy's shirt. the animaton for both is so lively and theres always something going on it's so pretty and a lot of heart was put into this i can tell, this movie is just overall wholesome and adorable.
Me: *Being generally very stressed and tired all the time.* Raggedy Ann & Andy A Musical Adventure: I'm going to give this random teenager so much serotonin.
Can y'all like hear how smooth and nice raggedy Andy's singing voice is especially for the white paper Daisy song at like 29:00 like one his voice is beautiful
To throw my two cents into the whole Ann and Andy siblings vs romantic partners debate, they are toys, I think it boils down to how their owner views them. If their child plays with them like brother and sister, they are brother and sister, if their child has them husband and wife, then they are husband and wife. Frankly, I find the idea of trying to decide their "true" relationship is kinda silly.
I think that’s fair. The only problem I have with them being brother and sister in this though, is just how they interact sometimes feels slightly.. couple-ish. Mainly during the daisy song. That’s fair, isn’t it? Like, if you saw this scene out of context, I feel like it’d be easy to mistake
@@samanthajeffers9339 Could have been the initial idea for their relationship was them being a couple, but having two dolls be in a romantic relationship could have rubbed parents the wrong way. Still your right, they are weirdly close for brother and sister.
Implying anythings wrong with toy story. This movie is legit but don't discount the boys at Pixar who made a film that pioneered animation into a new era

The story might be lacking, but for the time it came out, the visuals in this film are truly remarkable. The animation is so incredibly fluid, colorful, and the imagery is quite unique. It has its flaws, but this movie was, and still is, an adventure.
The visuals are just astounding, and luckily Ann and Andy both have very charming and expressive voice actors. The mood of melancholy optimism reminds me a lot of Mr. Bug Goes to Town
They are very shrill but luckily they only appear in short bursts, I do think they add to the overall aesthetic though with how weird they are. All the characters are so unique that even if they sometimes end up being annoying, they can still work as a cast to make an entertaining scene.
@@ethanpayne4116 the accompanying soundtrack is so different than the rest of the tones of the movie that it does psychic damage every time they appear. Otherwise I wouldn't mind.
Before you go and complain that Toy Story ripped this off, I must inform you that inanimate objects coming to life while no one's looking isn't really that new of a concept. It's been done plenty of times in books and movies before. In fact, I'm not even 100% certain that the author of the Raggedy Ann books did it first, but that particular series is much older than others I can think of, starting back in 1918. While Toy Story is similar to this movie in certain ways, I wouldn't say it's downright plagiarizing it. If anything, it's been modernized and given a faster pace and more substance story-wise.
embercoral good point! Another of my favorite childhood movies was Jim Henson’s “The Christmas Toy” (1986) which also surrounds the premise of inanimate objects coming to life while nobody is looking.

Really glad that this is slowly becoming a cult classic on social media 45 years after it was released to relative commercial failure in American theaters. Deserves to be as well remembered as other cult animated films out there like Watership Down.
A simple story goes a long way. Look at the complex animation and visuals- Ann and Andy’s exaggerated movement is how it is because they are boneless, they’re full of cotton. And look at the taffy blob, any formless entity is difficult but his liquid body is total perfection, animation wise. What else can we ask for? The characters are cute, charming, wired, and silly. Final verdict, watch all the way through.
Despite what people say about the plot/story, I'd say it's really wholesome and to the point. The way the characters interact is very wholesome too. The songs are also very good, imo. The visuals are remarkable and I love the attention to detail. And to think this was made so long ago... *Outstanding!!*
I, honest-to-god, consider this a modern classic in animation, mainly due to how memorably bizarre it really is, and its fantastic animation scenes. The songs aren't actually THAT half-bad once you get used to them intruding the paper-thin and turbulent storyline every few minutes.
I adore the aesthetic of this film. I am a big fan of kidcore and clowncore aesthetic, so this is right up my alley. The colors, the world around them. Everything is so gentle and charming, yet whimsical and absurd. It's like if Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland, and Toy Story had a baby, this is the result.
Why do people always put core behind a ton of stuff if it’s not music related? Like isn’t it only supposed to refer to music and a lot of times refers to metal or rock?
@@andreah9587 It still doesn’t make sense like at all? Like why can’t you just say I like this theme instead of putting core on everything? Besides people are making some very weird cores this point and it’s way out of hand.
You're all hollering about the belly thrusting, but I'm freaked out by his prehensile mustache. If this isn't the inspiration for Davey Jones in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, I'll eat my tricorn hat. BTW, Captain Contagious is voiced by the same guy who did Heat Miser in "The Year Without A Santa Claus."
28:12 - 28:15 "Where's m'foot- oh, there it is." Probably the most relatable line in the movie. I'd forget my own head if it weren't attached to my neck.
I don't think this film is as trippy as most people claim, as much as a work of a wildly creative artist with an imagination beyond what the average moviegoer is used to, without assuming the artist was on drugs. Dolls are a symbol of hope and comfort. They also have a symbiotic relationship with their owners--you give love and comfort to them, they give it to you (but unlinke most parents, they don't demand or expect you to do it; it's already in your nature). We often associate rags with poverty and humility, as evidenced in Ann's song Rag Dolly, "A little rag dolly, plain as can be; Has a friend who's as lovely as you" The playroom dolls are made of inexpensive materials: cloth for the Raggedies, wool for Barney Beanbag and Socko, Topsy-Turvy of celluloid, the Pennies and Maxie Fix-It of wood, Captain Contagious of clay sculpture, quilts for Susie Pincushion, and straw for Grampa. Topsy and Maxie were most likely bought by Marcella's mom at a toy store while mom crafted the others by hand. The dolls don't have to do Toy Story's "Back to your places, hurry!" part, but they're trying to be extra careful. Babette is made of porcelain, an expensive and fragile material, therefore she uses her stereotypical French snobbiness as a coping mechanism (hinted by her lyric "Like a bird in a cage with no way to go free", which got me to understand and care for her). Unlike the other dolls in the playroom, she was a birthday gift from Aunt Sophie, not Marcella's mother (barely visible on the card Ann reads). Contagious falls in lust with Babette the same way any pirate would if a woman was on deck. Ann, Topsy, Susie, and especially the Pennies weren't attractive enough for him to have this reaction. All his mates are male, hence why most pirates wouldn't allow a woman onboard, except if his crew had a couple women (like Mary Read) or the woman was higher-ranking (like Anne Bonney, Grace O'Malley, and Madame Cheng). This next bit, for me, is the great secret to make a static and flawless main character interesting: their greatest strength is also their greatest weakness, and they themselves can see it when they've made a mistake--after which they try to correct it. For example: Pippi Longstocking is a resourceful, adventurous, wild, free spirit--but she can be disrespectful to others if left to her own devices, until she's told she hasn't behaved properly. Being a friendly person, Annie was tricked into helping Contagious get out. When her own nature led to a new friend being abducted, she blames herself for the trouble (while the others blame Contagious) and insists she should set things right again by bringing Babette back (it's the only thing she feels will correct her mistake). The dolls say Marcella warns them not to leave the playroom. We see Marcella herself tell Raggedy Ann to watch over things, introduce them to Babette, and tell Babette she should go to bed. Therefore, she either knows the dolls are alive or the dolls themselves are extensions of her own imagination, as hinted by the ending when she finds them in the wading pool. This means that the fantasy worlds of the Deep Deep Woods, the Taffy Pit, and Looney Land were inspired by her mother's bedtime stories teaching her against running away from home, overeating, or teasing others, respectively. The ocean Contagious sails on is part of Marcella's adventurous fancy, not from her mother's lessons. This also explains why she's surprised to find them outside but doesn't bat an eye if they've moved a few inches to the left last time she saw them. On the journey to save Babette, each event tests Raggedy Ann's comforting and helpful nature by setting up a contrast to her in one way or another. In the woods, the first test is the Camel With the Wrinkled Knees. He's more rag-bag-baggy than Annie herself, except his saggy state got him thrown out by his last owner's mother. This may have happened long ago, in camel years, for it to leave an impact on him and thus spawn his obsessive mirage. Why camels calling him to follow them? Probably because he was crafted as part of a real caravan of cloth camels for someone special (part of what his "lot of real things" he mentions as a segue to Blue). He was most likely passed down between generations. Here, Annie passes the test and promises to take him home with her. The Greedy in the Taffy Pit is the next test, a literal interpretation of "Don't eat another candy like a pig, or you'll turn into one." Ann is a person who only wants to give. At first, she did feel genuinely sorry for him when he said he didn't feel satisfied or happy. After being told he wants a "sweetheart" as though he means, as Annie thinks, so many sweets and nobody to share it with. Ann says she's sorry and wants to help but there's nothing she can do for him. Upon hearing Ann say has a candy heart, as explanation for her sweet personality, Greedy's nature overtakes him. I've heard internet reviews call Ann stupid for this, but she's Feeling dominant in Myers-Briggs, and that simple idea of asking Maxie to help get Contagious out required her a great deal of effort than just being kind and friendly. Plus, this is the only time Ann ever gets mad at someone when it meant almost sacrificing her life for her heart becoming just another inconsequential sweet in Greedy's collection which he's stuck eating forever. Sir Leonard Looney is next. He says he can help Ann find Babette, which Ann accepts, but what she doesn't know is that was a setup for the "ink on the telescope, black eye" prank. Now she's already got a person who conflicts with her own friendly nature--someone who'd rather prank her than help her. Later on, she shushes and calls him a bully when he's teasing King Koo Koo and pranking Andy in front of the audience of Loonies and the King. Speaking of which... King Koo Koo tests Ann by being a complete contrast to her. He's higher on the social ladder, ranking Annie with a peasant, thus a king that's physically shorter from the salt of the earth but is socially taller. At first, she tries to make him feel better about it and reassure him he's at least a person. Upon hearing that he can only grow bigger by laughing at others and plans to grow bigger than anyone by laughing, we hear Ann say this: "Making fun of other people never made anybody bigger than anybody else." Koo Koo's ability here is that expression taken literally, instead of, "You shouldn't boost your social status by being a disrespetful jerk." "And, when I no longer find you funny, you will become one of THEM!" could refer to how a lot of schoolyard bullies only do it because they've been bullied themselves and get stuck in a vicious cycle. "Oh yeah, and it'll be such a lot of laughs it'll crack you up!" Some people have been known to die laughing. How did Koo Koo know her name was Raggedy Ann? Remember the telephone he used to call Gazooks? The grapevine in the Deep Deep Woods must be fast. Gazooks is lazy, slow, and easily bored. He only seems to want to follow throughs on Koo Koo's tickle torture plot just to have something to do. At first, he's a plot device to get the King to conquer our heroes, until you see he's representing the population who only follow smear campaigns, celebrity gossip, and politics just because their lives are seen as boring. In the Golden Age of Piracy, pirate captains were often elected. Captain Contagious might've been chosen for starting and maintaining a successful voyage. Babette could've acted more fragile to sweet-talk the crew into doing her bidding, promising them a nightlife in Paris that Contagious could never give them. Contagious was most likely ousted by majority vote and resisted, landing him and his faithful parrot Queasy in the brig. At sea, there's one more test, getting Babette to come home. They find her as a ruthless captain, who we and the Raggedies know she's using to go back to Paris, or most likely Aunt Sophie (Sophie could be an American living in France) perhaps because she had been her owner since she was a little girl. The tickle torture would kind of work to make Koo Koo laugh. All comedy is based on misery. Tickling makes you laugh and contort your body against your own will and helpless to resist. Plus, having a dozen people laughing like crazy will eventually make you laugh, too. "Get 'im! He's full of nothing but hot air!" could refer also to some politicians giving great speeches that win the crowd, even though their motives and actions are questions. Marcella adopts the Camel for one of two possible reasons: it was after her birthday and she thought it was a surprise gift; or she saw Ann and Andy hugging the Camel after the dolls freeze.
That is such a wonderful and well thought out explanation of this film. Thank you for taking the time, I'm glad to see someone who really appreciates it this much :)
This movie was traumatic to me as a child. The taffy monster that is eating itself while the characters are swimming in him was so frightening. Thanks for posting it. I had all these weird incoherent images in my memory. I thought it was just my fragmented memory, but it's truly a weird movie.
For some reason, the thing that really freaked me out wasn't the greedy, but the camel. I dunno why, but the whole hallucinating his family just tromping upwards to heaven as if they were dying, or HE were dying, always spooked me.

So this is basically the Raggedy Ann and Andy’s music adventure in a nutshell:
*1: Babette and Ann are simping for eachother*
*2: the camel is depressed*
*3: The king of looney cant take a joke*
*4: pirate kidnaps the person he is in love with*
*5: everyone doesn’t pay attention to any of that cuz there too busy simping for Andy*

I feel like this is a valid perspective
I think that’s fair. The only problem I have with them being brother and sister in this though, is just how they interact sometimes feels slightly.. couple-ish. Mainly during the daisy song. That’s fair, isn’t it? Like, if you saw this scene out of context, I feel like it’d be easy to mistake
Well i mean ann literally says "my brother andy" so...

You say "long ago", and I raise you snow white, made some four decades before this movie!
Thankfully this movie was made back then and not in the modern day, otherwise, Woke Stupidity.
I, honest-to-god, consider this a modern classic in animation, mainly due to how memorably bizarre it really is, and its fantastic animation scenes. The songs aren't actually THAT half-bad once you get used to them intruding the paper-thin and turbulent storyline every few minutes.
The Camel with the Wrinkled Knees' song is a classic.
The songwriter was best known for his work on Sesame Street during its earlier years, and you can definitely hear it just from listening to the score.

Dolls are a symbol of hope and comfort. They also have a symbiotic relationship with their owners--you give love and comfort to them, they give it to you (but unlinke most parents, they don't demand or expect you to do it; it's already in your nature).
We often associate rags with poverty and humility, as evidenced in Ann's song Rag Dolly, "A little rag dolly, plain as can be; Has a friend who's as lovely as you"
The playroom dolls are made of inexpensive materials: cloth for the Raggedies, wool for Barney Beanbag and Socko, Topsy-Turvy of celluloid, the Pennies and Maxie Fix-It of wood, Captain Contagious of clay sculpture, quilts for Susie Pincushion, and straw for Grampa.
Upon hearing that he can only grow bigger by laughing at others and plans to grow bigger than anyone by laughing, we hear Ann say this: "Making fun of other people never made anybody bigger than anybody else." Koo Koo's ability here is that expression taken literally, instead of, "You shouldn't boost your social status by being a disrespetful jerk."
"And, when I no longer find you funny, you will become one of THEM!" could refer to how a lot of schoolyard bullies only do it because they've been bullied themselves and get stuck in a vicious cycle.
Wow that's
I don't like what you said.
Daishikaze you are so sweet

Let us give thanks that _they who shall not be named_ didn't claim this movie so that we can all listen to this in the background and comment 🙏🏽
This movie was traumatic to me as a child. The taffy monster that is eating itself while the characters are swimming in him was so frightening. Thanks for posting it. I had all these weird incoherent images in my memory. I thought it was just my fragmented memory, but it's truly a weird movie.
I could imagine aku being the greedy
Michael Oxenrider he is called the greedy
For some reason, the thing that really freaked me out wasn't the greedy, but the camel. I dunno why, but the whole hallucinating his family just tromping upwards to heaven as if they were dying, or HE were dying, always spooked me.
Right now it's my first time watching this in forever...i barely remember this movie..i totally forgot about the taffy!
His intro it one of the few scenes that doesn’t have soundtrack.
