  • Learn more about the baritone in opera with Lyric’s Sir Andrew Davis, Renée Fleming, and Anthony Freud. This vocal range might be stuck in the middle of tenor and bass, but the baritone is definitely not a voice that can be forgotten. Some of the most famous roles in opera are portrayed by baritones-the ultimate bad boy in Mozart's Don Giovanni, the resourceful fixer Figaro in Rossini's The Barber of Seville, the king of the gods Wotan in Wagner's Ring cycle...just to name a few.

    I am proudly a lyric Baritone. I love the hybrid fusion of the Lyric Baritone. It’s the type of voice that will fool you with how we can have a abnormal extension in our upper & lower register.

      I think I'm also a lyric baritone, but definitely lack the low notes. I do have a full sounding middle and quite ringy high notes. Not sure if this sounds like a voice that can pass auditions, but fingers crossed

      Contrary to popular beleefe there is no ſuch thing as a lyꝛic baritone. It is a lack of deuelopement in the voice (cheſt and falſetto) plus mainſtream acceptance of this vnder deuelopement that hath led to people thinking ſuch a thing exiſts. Haue you ſeen the "this is opera! archive" UA-cam channel ? I firſt learned about this there. Back in the day a baritone was the next biggeſt voice after dꝛamatic tenoꝛ. After that came baſſe. Many of theſe ſub fachs like lyꝛic mezzo and lyꝛic baritone did not exiſt but are a recent creation ſtemming as the reſult of wide ſpꝛead acceptance of pooꝛ vocal technique.

      @@NeptuneatDawn that’s completely unacceptable. Recent classifications came from minds of the same elk & expertise as those which the originals derived. They’re just as applicable.
      I’m a lyric baritone & there is nothing undeveloped about my voice. I sing in registers well beyond my fach lower & upper.
      Also trained as a lyric tenor & have extended beyond that. 😏🎉
      Soft, hard, gritty, light, heavy, smooth, raspy, low, belt, falsetto, run, rift, sing minor chords, scales etc. 🤷‍♂️🥴

      Real Contraltos as as rare as tenors! Tenor barely make 3% of the male population of the earth. Real contraltos are like 0.5% of the female population.

    Most baritones and squeezed and thick. That’s the heavy sound you hear but it’s a false heavy. Happens when you depress the larynx.

      Be careful when listening to coaches and conductors. Their reputations proceed themselves. diskau was a great art song singer. But he wasn’t the greatest or near the top for baritones.

    I’m a baritone when a full range D#2 - Eb6 I’m 15 turning 16 and the highest I peak before reaching into falsetto is a F4 I have a mixed voice but it lacks resonance the highest it goes is a D#5 and when pushed it sounds raspy and strained but it reaches a F5 my voice is not really powerful but it’s capable of producing some amount of power and u can say it’s kinda of airy I can some complex runs not fluently and with ease but I can do them it’s sounds a little in between light and full I would say my sound is similar to Beyoncé in her early years in terms of actual power, I thought I was Verdi baritone but my friend keeps saying I’m a most likely a Lyric or a Full Lyric baritone is this true?

      With all due respect, I think it is quite a bit too early to try and categorize yourself as a singer. I am a 21 year old studying classical voice in my undergrad and I’m not sure of my fach and that’s okay! Also, fachs are not set in stone at all you don’t have to belong to a certain fach to sing rep as long as you are comfortable singing it! Keep singing stuff that is comfortable for you, and you will be just fine!:)

    Hearing somebody praise Dieskau as "the baritone of baritones", when guys like Bastianini, Warren, Macneil, London, or Ruffo exist makes me despair for the leadership of Opera nowadays. You should know better Mr. Davis. Thank God Ms Fleming added her caveat to that.

    • @TheRoadLessChosen
      @TheRoadLessChosen 3 роки тому

      Hahah. Fleming is part of the problem with opera though. She does the same exact thing that modern baritones do. The thick sound. It’s the tongue. Her first coach, I worked with quite a bit in the past, said she started her Reneeism’s and didn’t want to hear anything about her vocal choices. Outstanding when she was young though. Age has only made her worse because she avoids the work. She should be at her best right now.

    • @TheRoadLessChosen

      Btw, Bastianini, Ruffo and MacNeil are the greatest!! There is a duet between Ruffo and Caruso that is absolutely amazing.

    Oh come on mannnnnn......
    The real baritonal vocal range is:
    G2-C#5(passagio:E4).......
    So, I as a baritone never get demotivated but feel angered when people give tenor's range upto E5 but baritones upto A4.......... It's wrong.......

    • @reign.vitaly
      @reign.vitaly 4 роки тому +6

      Uhm...You for real claiming that a baritone can go up to C#5? Most operatic baritones in the past (excluding a few with crazy range) can only go up to a B flat or a B max.

      There's one aria where the tenor goes up to a high E in chest. Nothing more than that that I know of. Some arias have high Fs for the tenor but some sing it in falsetto or mix.
