Instructor Carol is a breath of fresh air/advice!!! Very, very best! Clear concise, explains small details I had not understood, even about what exactly does a "loose leash" become a pull.
This is probably the most helpful dog training video I've ever seen. Most are about how to train your dogs to do what you want but never mention what we as their people are doing wrong. Thank you so much for this video! I never would've realized that I'm the problem and not my precious pupper without you! I'm sure we'll make much better progress with training now that I know what I'm doing wrong. ❤
You don’t to have to speak your dog at all. I have a condition called aphasia. My speech unintelligible and it affects my tone. My dog and i have seamlessly worked out on hand commands…..claps, snapping my fingers, patting my legs…..i can’t whistle too now. The hardest part is disciplining myself to not her let go away ignoring hand commands. Follow-up, follow up, follow up….patience, not hostility.
thanks i feel so validated about focusing more on hand gestures than voice when training my dog. im multilingual and tend to switch between languages without noticing, which would definitely confuse my dog.
This was so informative! I have a young cuddly pup and I smother her with kisses when I take her outside. Her body language is clear to me now that she does not like this. Thank you!
Carole - it was great to meet you this weekend at the Ottawa UpDog Event. ❤️ love the advice you gave. Wish I could attend your classes. Does McCann Dogs have online courses???
Thank you for the advice on getting them to come to you. I have a collie springer mix and I've noticed that he would come to me but he wouldn't come 'to' me, if you know what i mean, he come close to me or run by me. I never realised that it might be me, I'm well over 6 foot, that would be causing him anxiety. I'll have to work on that. Meanwhile my GSD is the exact opposite, I bend over throw my arms out and tell him to come find me or get me and he comes racing!!! Possibly why I never realised with my other pup. Thanks again.
I just got my second dog, 9 years after my first dog passed. I was a pretty bad dog owner with the first one, in that I spoiled him and inadvertently let him rule the roost. Before getting another dog, I watched all kinds of videos and felt pretty confident that I could do it right this time. However, she completely ignores me. Granted, I've only had her a week and a half, and I got her at 3 months old, but my confidence is fading fast. She/(We) did great at first, quickly mastering sit, potty training, and crate training. But now, she holds going to the bathroom, even if we stay outside for an hour, and tries to go to the bathroom when we go back inside. She doesn't listen to any commands other than sit, and only when I have a treat for her, AND she wants it. She also absolutely despises the leash and refuses to move at all with it on, regardless of the technique or type of treats I use. Last, she'll come up to us like she wants to be pet or picked up, but when we go to do so, she runs and hides. She didn't do this the first few days we had her and we can't figure out why she's doing it now. She does eventually come to me and allow me to pick her up so she can cuddle next to me to take a nap, so I don't think it's a fear issue. It's making me feel incompetent as a dog owner and that maybe I just shouldn't own a dog. It doesn't help that I've been really sick since the day after we got her, so I haven't been as consistent as I'd planned to be with training. Am I just being too hard on myself and my expectations are too high for being able to train all of these behaviors in a week or two, especially given that I'm sick? Is it ok to relax on the training until I get better and then start over when I can be more consistent, or will it be too late then to correct any bad habits she's developed in the meantime? Thanks for any advice anyone can give on any of these issues or training overall. I just want to be the best dog mom I can be and provide her a safe, healthy, and happy life.
Excellent video. Just now starting to train a 10 wk old LGD (housedog) and this makes me mindful about not repeating commands or using her name too much.
That’s great with working dogs who are born to please.. I don’t use any talking for most of my commands or instructions and my breed is more difficult to teach, i use body language which makes the dog look at me.. especially in the eyes. The woman is correct that communication is key and most people don’t know how to communicate..
So cool! Thanks for sharing! I struggle a little bit more when I go outside and my puppy sees a dog from the street we live (we stay on house, not in apartment). So when she sees her, she is like crazy. She doesn't respond to name, she doesn't came when I call her.. Is in her world actually... So I don't know how to change that. What and how I have to practice? 🤔 🙏
We have 10lb rat terrier & recently adopted what we thought was another rat terrier but when dna came back she’s 26% border collie & 19% pit bull with some English springer & mountain cur. The puppy constantly nips & jumps, traps & pesters my small rat terrier senior dog. I’ve read border collies don’t do well with other small dogs & not to have them together. What should I do? Will this get better or never work out? Thanks & I enjoy you’re videos!!
What treats to you use? I’ve had my pup for almost three weeks and she doesn’t seem really interested in the treats we bought for her. Is this a long trial and error process? She had to go on a bland diet for three days, and seems to love boiled chicken. I’m afraid if I give her the chicken as a treat, that she will lose interest in her actual meals.
Does this work for a very stubborn 8-year-old Flat-Coated Retriever? My big boy just...Ugh! He's a rescue, and he's so, so sweet but stubborn as a mule.
I think it would. I’ve been working on this type of thing w my 6 yrs old goodendoodle. You might find that you have to start using a different word for the command bc maybe your dog has become desensitized to the original word you were using for the command if you overused it like I did. Also your verbal approval is just as powerful as food. Upstate Canine Academy on UA-cam has excellent instruction too! But I also love McCann. Just a little bit different teaching styles.
I know it might be a pain to record, but could we ever get a series of videos where you take a completely untrained dog to being able to sit on command?
what about repeating a command to continue to reinforce it (while theyre still successfully doing it)? I see this is hunting training. trainers will continue to say sit while they are already sitting. is that needed at the start of training or is that devaluing the word?
I am not a professional trainer but ... my thoughts are...at best its redundant and at worst it's confusing. Michael Ellis has some good advice re establishing a continuation marker I.e "good" in slower and lower tone ( I like what you're doing and keep doing it). And also teaching a release word I.e break so the dog learns to keep the position until released.
Hi I’m wondering if I could get some tips. We recently got a puppy, a f1 golden doodle. He’s so adorable and we love him. But there are moments when he gets very well aggressive with his puppy biting. He’s been getting better since the first week we had him but he has moments where he ignores everything we give him and still comes after our arms/hands and feet. It’s very concerning because it’s not a attitude we like. We don’t want this to end up proceeding to future biting when he’s older. We have tried every trick and training method out there for biting and he doesn’t listen to them. We do put him in timeout when he doesn’t stop and doesn’t listen. Other then the biting he has been so good. Loves playing and learning new things. I am however wondering how I can get him to stop jumping up on us, and I want to get him to stop biting everything, from the tables to the couches.
He is teething, anything in sight that is available to him he thinks is fair play, remove things from his reach that aren’t okay, block off table areas etc if he’s biting the tables, mentally stimulate him with games etc and he will grow out of it, the teething goes on for a few months but I promise it gets better, my arms were in absolute bits at one point, my girl is 9 months now and she’s so sweet, the teething does turn them into little monsters! Lol x
I’m finding it super hard to train my 3 lbs cavapoos with so many treats because there tummies are so small and sensitive. I’ve been using there meal but it’s not high value at all.
Hm. You can work with them and call their names, and every time they give eye contact reward them. Try to teach them that food is something that is earned and not given..
My dog seems to be depressed and I am really disappointed in traning her, as there is no Profesional trainer around iny country. It is a husky, listen to me when she wants! Almost sleep. And very eager to catching cats! :(
I've watched many videos by McCann Dog's and they're great, but Instructor Carol is very, very good
Yep! Clear communication to the dogs being trained AND to the people watching the video!
👍🏽‼️
Instructor Carol is a breath of fresh air/advice!!! Very, very best! Clear concise, explains small details I had not understood, even about what exactly does a "loose leash" become a pull.
Love watching Carol and the way she works with her dogs

Nah like legit this is the most important video of the lot, especially for teen phase
Completely agree. I am putting her advice in practice today (just now starting to train a new 10 wk old pup).
"LESS IS MORE" - Amen to that!
love that you're showing the problem solving pieces!
Thanks Carol. So helpful. I'll be getting a new puppy soon and I appreciate you showing me how to not make mistakes I've done in the past.😊
I have gotten lazy with reinforcing sit and hold. 🤦🏾♀️I need to do better because I want to set Maxwell up for success. Thanks Carol!
hands down best dog training trainers tutorials on youtube. thanks for the help =)
Carol, you are downright fantastic. Seriously, such a great teacher!

I'm multilingual and my dogs work from my hand commands. It works pretty well for me.
Patience, not hostility. I love that. Thank you!
Thanks for letting me know I understand better now😊
I would love to train with Carol, she is my absolute favorite. ❤️
Really interesting to see that real-time exercise without using the word "sit" and an overall very helpful video yet again :)
That was so helpful. I have a little dog that struggles with come and runs when we bend down. Now I know why!
FYI: Operant conditioning works well on people too.
This was so informative! I have a young cuddly pup and I smother her with kisses when I take her outside. Her body language is clear to me now that she does not like this. Thank you!
Hey! Thanks for watching and commenting 🐾

Wow, very interesting! I am guilty of those wrong training behaviors. Now will try to do better. Thanks!
This is very helpful. I always thought that kind of training is just teasing the dog, but they seem to understand it

Very good video thanks so much!!
I am such a fur momma. Everytime she did something right, I am over here saying "good girl!" like she can hear me hahaha

I’ve trained my newf my husband gives too many words, not consistent and wonder may why he ignores him🤪
Not saying that is not the proccess to go, but that is a border collie though. Reality will be tougher with your dog probably. Don't give up.
Yup, I figured it out before actually, so right now I will wait 15 seconds before repeating the command
What is the difference between the commands break and okay?

unfortunately my dog turned 70% deaf so shouting for him is now a thing but thankfully he understands hand signals XD

I had a brilliant Flat Coat Retriever. Never needed a lead. Left her outside shops in busy areas not tied up. She would never move until I returned.
Do you have a video on recall? My dog has allergies, and can only use her specific food for allergies.
I know it might be a pain to record, but could we ever get a series of videos where you take a completely untrained dog to being able to sit on command?
What kind of treats are you using?
At what age should you start activity training beside the obvious potty training? I am getting a 8 wks old puppy

Use his/her kibble. If refused: without dinner and bingo! A hungry dog is an easily trainable dog😊
I've got a 4 month cavoodle as well and find that tiny pieces of boiled chicken has been the best treat to motivate her.
Did the same thing with my border collie puppy, used his entire breakfast and he didn't get it.🤨
My Parents don't beliebe me when i tell them not to use my puppies verbal commands yet. I hope this Video is going to convince them.
But my border collie puppy more likely to come to me when I bent down.
When I try to gently position my pup to sit he trys to bite me
That's actually an ai bot in a dog suit
My experience is that women tends to talk to their dogs to much when training or /and on a walk.. I know it is All the LOVE
In my experience it's men who talk a lot to their dogs. Thank goodness anecdotal evidence is not scientific!
My dog seems to be depressed and I am really disappointed in traning her, as there is no Profesional trainer around iny country. It is a husky, listen to me when she wants! Almost sleep. And very eager to catching cats! :(

It's a lot harder than it looks 😆
