Jerry Reed Guitar Man Lyrics
Well I quit my job down at the carwash I left my mama a goodbye note
By sundown I'd left Kingston with my guitar under my coat
I hitchhiked all the way down to Memphis got a room at the YMCA
For the next three weeks I went a hountin' them night clubs
Lookin' for a place to play
Well I thought my pickin' would set 'em on fire
But nobody wanted to hire a guitar man
Well I nearly bout starved to death down in Memphis I run out of money and luck
So I bummed me a ride down to Macon Georgia on a overloaded poultry truck
I thumbed on down to Panama City started checkin' out some of them all night bars
Hopin' I can make myself a dollar makin' music on my guitar
Got the same old story at them all night piers
There ain't no room around here for a guitar man we don't need a guitar man son
So I slept in the hobo jungles I bummed a thousand miles of track
Till I found myself in Mobile Alabama in a club they call Big Jack's
A little four piece band was jammin' so I took my guitar and I sat in
I showed 'em what a band would sound like
With a swingin' little guitar man show 'em son
So if you ever take a trip down to the ocean find yourself down round Mobile
Well make it on out to the club called Jack's if you got a little time to kill
Just follow that crowd of people you'll wind up out on his dance floor
Diggin' the finest little five piece group up and down the Gulf of Mexico
And guess who's leadin' that five piece band
Why wouldn't you know it's that swingin' little guitar man yeah

This dude was a gift to this planet.
The Man!
❤❤ No doubt.
Goddamn right.
SO TRUE~!!!!!
Absolutely
When Chet Atkins says you're good - you're good.
Chet atkins wishes he was jerry reed
HE WAS GOOD REST IN PEACE
Two amazing guitarists that played amazingly together.
When I first saw Jerry Reed in smokey and the bandit I didn't have a clue he was a musician, until a few years later, then I discovered his back catologe, he even played with Elvis on that track, being the writer of that song.
really good
Jeery Reed could do it all. Sing, pick, stand up comedy, and act. Great video.
A guitar master in every sense of the word, and on a nylon string axe to boot. R.I.P. Jerry
Y'all Amerigo Pieholez look like Richard Simmons done took yo' Starch and Husky shoes.
(Thanks, Jim)
Jump right on recordin' that "Wives Don't Like Old Girlfiends" fo' yo' family down at the eatin' joint in Austin, Junior Brown.
Classical guitars are known for nylon strings
He was awesome, he played on Elvis cover version because no one else could play it like he did ! Now thats a huge compliment ❤❤ rip Jerry 🙏
Flat "Pic'n , From from bluegrass to country-and-western to the Rocky mountains spell
HAPPY ✅️
Yes, me. He was and is one of the best.
A virtuoso guitarist, a gifted singer and songwriter...
A more than competent character actor
And he was good looking too!
Some people have all the luck!
Right !! The desaster is that he s said to be a nice guy, too. Not even an asshole. All we can do is hand him the coffee
As a testament to how amazing Jerry Reed was I'm not a big country music fan (sorry) and I still rock his music since I was a little kid in the seventies......Ride on Snowman
Nobody had more fun playing guitar than Jerry Reed.!!!
Picking and a grinning par excellent, As sure as water is wet.
I think it was toss up with Roy Clark🎸
Fun! Totally 🎸
Roy Clark, but yeah
As a musician for some 50 odd years now, I just want you all to know how hard it is to play and sing this song. Jerry Reed made it look as easy as ringing a bell.
"when you're good, you're good!"
Go Jerry go!!!!
we could use a guitar man/women today
Elvis couldn't get his folks to recreate it!
It's one of those songs that is deceptively complicated
We went fishing together, that man is an awsome man and goofy as a one legged chicken.
wow, i bet he could tell a story or two
*was a great man. He is sadly a long time gone!
What a privilege to meet him your a lucky man
Are you kidding me? Playing those riffs on a nylon string and making it sound cool is really hard. Jerry Reed rips man!
Slick some Bril Creme and everything is magic !
Jerry was the absolute definition of cool 😎!!!!!
talent, knowledge, skill - one of the best guitar players ever, and he could write and sing. Jerry Reed was the complete package.
Just about incomparably talented.
The best at his job ... Making people happy!
He makes it look so easy, just sliding that index while holding a chord, amazing talent to say the least.
This may be the best overall recording/video of Guitar Man. Jerry is so good here, he makes playing it seem effortless. It truly is a masterful performance, in his true style, virtuosity and humor. He seems to be be having a genuinely good time . . . as if he's playing this around a camp fire. Amazing.
Check out Jerry on the Glen Campbell show playing Guitar Man. I almost forgot how good Glen was too. Jerry had a Telecaster Blackguard on that episode. enjoy
just lip-synching here....but he sure was a baaaad man on guitar. Alabama Wild Man is one my faves...I smile every time I hear it.
No way. The live version that is preceded by the guitar man slow song is his best.
@@bazookajoethompson3407Glen Cambell was amazing as well. Jerry had a comedic side and that speak/ singing thing that’s kind of irreplaceable.
Yep, miming and not playing the bass line but a very good recording.
Someone asked Chet Atkins once either who's your favorite guitar player, or the best you've seen....one of those questions. Anyway, he said Jerry Reed. Coming from Chet, that's pretty special.
Jerry always said that if it wasn't for Chet Atkins,....there never would have been a Jerry Reed.
La guitarra de este hombre y la vos de elvis hicieron una maravilla de cancion
Elvis LOVED Jerry. He must have been an AWESOME person 💕
One of America's greatest performers.
I had the pleasure to be in the studio in Nashville the day that Jerry recorded this song. It was a day I will always treasure as I met Jerry ,Chet and Roy Orbison that day.
Damn, you're a lucky man. Were they all nice people?
Could you elaborate more please? We want details!!
Outstanding!
What?!?Oh man...i mean man this is an American story fo shore....i'm super jealous....i just can't
You need write a narrative of that day or do a podcast! That is music history!
Everytime Jerry Reed says YEAH !!!
an angel gets its wings
Or "PICK IT SON !!" 🤠
I don't think I've ever seen him this young. It's so wild.
I love Jerry's unique style a true American legend RIP ❤
Jerry, Glen, and Roy...to name a few.

To know hes gone from this.earth makes my heart hurt. Kinda like that first best friend you lose when youre young. I went to see Smokey n the Bandit with my daddy in the theatre. I was 7 years old. I cried on the way home. Daddy said "son why are you cryin'". I said "daddy, how come we dont get to see The Snow Man go get the clam chowder in Boston". I loved Burt Reynolds, and God knows my first crush was The Frog. But i believe besides my daddy...The Snow Man became my best friend that night. Its been a right of passage and mandatory that my son and his buddies all must watch Smokey n The Bandit at huntin camp . Im 54 years old now...my boy is 24. But i still love to hear him and his friends say..."lets watch the Bandit". Ive watched at least a few hundred times id guess. 😆 Thank you Jerry Reed for making this man, have one of the best times of his life as a young boy in awe of your gift to the world.
I'm not a big Country fan, but I love Jerry Reed. Rascal.
Jerry was the epitome of the positive connotation of "a good ol' boy"
Great guy. Monster guitar player.
One of the best entertainers ever. Love ya Jerry!!! RIP.
Jerry Reed was walking breathing talent. He just had it.
One of the greatest performer's of his time, we miss you bud 🤪🇺🇲
Making a very difficult guitar part look easy. Jerry was the master!
one of the BEST guitar pickers there ever was!
Great version of Jerry's Guitar Man. Great guitar player, love his finger picking style. Love this performance. Never seen it before.
Jerry Reed...is the man.
One of the best storytellers there have ever been 😊😊😊
no fluffy overdubs here......talent right there son!
Apart from the high chance that he’s lip sync-ing?
@Simian Samsonite I’m only guessing by how reverby the voice is and that his guitar and voice are using the same mic. So I guess that he’s doing the old trick of using the studio version of the song and messing with the mix a bit to make it sound live. Could be live of course but it just doesn’t seem right to me
@@morganthomas5934 This doesn't match the studio version. As for all the reverb, that could be from a few things. The building, reverb tank on the EQ board, they have him ran through guitar amps... Which yes running vocals through guitar amps were common back then
@Simian Samsonite I’m not sure how it worked in the US but in the UK bands that went on lip sync shows were supposed to record a version to be played on it, but most just sent in a remixed version of the single. So this could be an actual live recorded version that he’s synching too, but I’m unsure. Can’t disagree with that tho, the man was a machine, never more unbeatable than when he was on his own with a gut string.
There was only one Jerry. He really was one of a kind guitar player.
I grew up in a Jerry Reed fan family, but it wasn't till I was grown that I realized just what a multi threat talent he was....and he made it look soooo easy.
Playing Acoustic is a chore anyway but he does it effortless and don't miss a beat.
Had the good fortune of seeing Jerry live in the mid 70s. Helluva show. R.I.P
I love Jerry Reed! A very underappreciated guitarist now a days. He, Roger Miller & Roy Clark!!
Jim Stafford also.
Jerry Reed was such a class act that he would use lighter stings and tune down so anyone he ever played with was heard over his playing
Oh shit yes. i do/did believe Clark was the best....of any genre....but now here come mr. Jerry Reed. Lawd have mercy!
@@stobbinsboy Jerry Reed kicked MAJOR ASS!!
@ Son! I've always liked him but now I really see his talent. Aw hell just found out he died.
One of my favorites,
That was lit.
So glad that he wouldn't give up the publishing rights to Elvis for the song. RIP Jerry
That was Col Parker's doings. Not Elvis.
Why are you so glad? What gave you so much pleasure in Jerry not doing this?
@@Muertes-tf2oj Exactly, I was just about to mention that.
Elvis Presley had no interest in such things - he just wanted to record music. I agree though - so glad that he wouldn't give up the rights to Col Con Parker.
If Elvis did it with Jerry's song why couldn't he do with dolly s song
A ‘Guit-tar Man’ he was indeed! One of the best.
Jerry Reed was a very good entertainer..Should have been acknowledged more...Quite the singer as well as a guitarist..
He had to go play guitar for Elvis recording his songs, because none of the session musicians could fingerpick like Jerry! A great legend of a guitar player.
Rip jerry, you music is very beautiful. I have 13 years old and live in italy, i listen your song every day.
Congratulations!!!You people have just witnessed Mr.Jerry Reed...
Fine picking
There ain't no one sweeter on a guitar than Mr. Jerry Reed.
Always enjoy listening to Jerry!
love his performance (play it son)
Jerry was a fantastic entertainer. God rest his soul
Listened to so much Jerry Reed this month. The delivery of the lyrics and musicianship are awesome.
None better than Jerry, the guitar player's player.
I'm with you there Wade. Glen Campbell a close second i would say!
What a total classic
SON!!!
and…..on a gut string guitar…Incredible…Jerry Reed passed Life with Flying Colors❤️🙏
When Elvis recorded this song the session players couldn't play as good as Jerry so they had to get Jerry to play guitar for them
Thank you did not know that 🎸🇺🇸
@@davidqueen5098 he was out fishing and Elvis said "well find him'
That’s a true story, but whats crazy is now you can find a 6 year old kid on UA-cam that can duplicate anyone
And Jerry was smart enough he got royalty off the song every time the song was played
@@jamesmadison6650 yeah, find me a 6 year old who can play this..
Multi talented & then some! Sing, play guitar, act loved all his stuff growing up in the 70's & 80's. He had a down to earth straight forward quality, everyone loved to be around kinda guy. R.I.P. Jerry
so good
What an outstanding performance, top draw flawless guitar playing and amazing vocal..
So classy
God bless america for giving us rock n roll, love from uk❤
Watching him in the 70s was so cool. Still is today.R.I P..Thank you sir.😊
Amazing performance, this song will last forever, I look forward to hear it again in 50 years from now.
When Elvis covered it they finally had Reed play it. ❤
There's a great story about how Elvis loved and wanted to record Jerry Reed's Guitar man but his guitarist, the legendary James Burton, could not play the opening the same way that Jerry did (claw picker). So Elvis finally sent for Jerry to come play on that recording, and he ended up covering another Jerry tune US Male. I believe Jerry played on one more song as well. UNIQUE? Just doesn't do him justice.. legendary! What I love about this video? I know a lot is made of his fingerpicking style.. but look at how deftly he moves his left hand comping, playing base, leaving open strings to resonate... the guy was just fantastic!
Love Jerry Reed. First time hearing this gem. Thank you. Feeling great this 🌄 morning!
He was the thing! He could do it all .
The Song and the Legend around the publishing for elvis just makes this song even more bad ass. Play that guitar Jerry!
Jerry Reed was and is a tour-de-force! A force of nature! Too good to be ignored! What an amazing legacy!
The Alabama Wild Man!!!
You really have to be good to play anywhere near this level and sing at the same time.
Great seeing Jerry do this "live" in '67' ... being a musician myself (vox- rock/ blues) ... what really is surprising, is Jerry is more well known for his movies/ comedy these dayz. I have played with several really good guitarists (rock/ metal mostly), and Jerry is just an outstanding guitarist/ vocalist and lyricist ... for me, he's in the 'best of best' category, an unconventional guitarist with a unique picking method, rhythms, and guitar tuning!
I am a lot younger than you I think but my view is he had more talent than the rest put together and was also honest and decent . R.I P Jerry
this is just lip-synching on a tv show. He was a terrific picker for sure.
Think how funny, charming, and talented of an actor you have to be to make people forget that you burn through strings for a living.
Jerry Reed was amazing on guitar
One of a kind , one of the best !!!
Dang, finger picking AND singing. What a gift
Jerry always travelled to a different kind of beat. His rhythms were always unique.
Burke Co, NC Says hey yall... to all us Jerry Reed fans!!! ❤
Yes is very good
I liked Jerry's singing as well ,his Amos Moses is a real Swamp Classic.
Jerry Reed- what a talent!!!!
Elvis actually had to call him to the studio to play on his version of the song, no one else could capture the way Reed played!
What a song & what a lovely performance 👌🎵🎶👏
He's in the Songwriters Hall of Fame. 😊 He was as good or better than the other actors he played with but was humble and never stepped on their shoes. Always had a smile and was friendly to others. With the right manager he could have been so much more. He could have easily been the lead in movies, he could have been the front man in a great rock or country band too, but he did it his way. 😊😊
In my opinion a real cool person and laid back guitar picker...
Jerry Reed, really is one of the great guitarist that came out of the country music scene.
Many remember is unique vocal style and song-writing, but Jerry could play with the best of them.
He was so underrated it’s a shame!
ROCKIN!
Amazing guitarist and great singing voice. Love watching videos of Jerry Reed.
Pure talent
What a great guitar player.
Wow and I’ve been feed this my entire child hood and never new he was this amazing
Before I ever knew he was a musician, I loved him in Smokey and the bandit
This went straight into my *"Genius old music"* playlist. 😎
ok, ok i got me a new geetar god. always loved jimi, beck, page, iommi, roy clark....now mr. Reed...Suuuuunnnn!
Hey he looks like James Dean!
Anyway, I'm here through the Jesus And Mary Chain's B-side cover from the early 1990s. , which has been in my head for decades.
Apparently Freddie Starr also covered this song!
This makes watching "Smokey and the Bandit" more fun when Cledus says "son!"
Even by today's standard, 60 years later, he's one of the best ever. Coming from a Steve Howe fan.
The best picker sanger ever, IMHO of course
