Great review and deep nuanced insight! One caveat about your 2014 take. It doesn’t matter if atomic testing mutated Gojirasaurous or if a fully formed Gojira existed prior and atomic testing attracted it. The result and themes are the same. We dropped a nuke and now Gojira walks through our populations
I love the Monsterverse films, but Godzilla Minus One was soo refreshing! Not only is it a reimagining, but it's a reminder to why the character has such longevity
A fantastic analysis of G-1. I think what it was for me as a fan of the franchise since 1969, is it's human story. I think when one goes back to 1954 with particularly Serizawa's story, we see that almost in what Kioshi represents in that one man against the monster aspect. What got me the most about this story as oppose to the Legacy Monsterverse, is the aspect of the monster. His presence and his purpose. I'm a bit wary of what the Monsterverse is doing. I'm having difficulty really getting into the stories of Hiroshi's kids and the whole story behind what Monarch is. While I enjoy the 1950s story with the young Shaw and the Rhandas, I can't say I love the 2014 story. I find it tedious and almost yawn-worthy. However, the story with Shikishima, Noriko, and little Akiko had me engaged from the jump. The humanity of the story and the odds being against it and for Godzilla. The little family created with Doc, Akitsu, "The KId" was so beautiful and moving. However, the way in which Tachibana and Shikishima's story went from shame and punishment, to redemption and renewal was so touching. The acting, the music, sound design, everything was without equal in my eyes. It was a joy to this longtime Godzilla fan. And thank you for your video. It expressed beautifully what I thought of the film.
