    Competing risks, analysis and interpretation
    Summary :
In the end we all die, but not all at the same age and from the same cause. If we want to quantify the probability to die from a specific cause, the other causes of death are competing risks. Different approaches to analyse data in the presence of competing risks have been suggested and used. Yet, there remains a lot of confusion with respect to the proper type of analysis and the interpretation of the results. In the presence of competing risks, three different hazards can be defined. I explain how the study question determines which hazard is most appropriate. When interpreting results, it is important to know what the hazards represent, how they relate to each other and how they translate to the cumulative probability. I introduce and explain the main concepts by example.
