good list, i'm impressed watchmojo, you actually did your research this time. battle for middle earth 2 should have been at least an honorable mention, not all games based on classic movies and books are really popular, BFME2 still has a dedicated fan base, it's a great game for fans of RTS' as well
Ediranii That one was pretty standard for an adventure. If you start this way, you could add all good Adventures like Broken Sword, Toonstruck, Floyd and Co, which all had its uniquness, but werent bought not even close to the number as some other titels as Half Life or whatever.
STALKER is one of the most charming and atmospheric franchises ever. The game has atmosphere so thick that you could use it as a wrecking ball. And the voice acting may sound bad but with the time you begin to love the russian accend. The great soundtrack does the rest. The thing that didn't made it sell well are the numerous bugs and the fact that it isn't a walk in the park. It's aslo sad that all the games, espially ShoC, have a lot of cut content. But fans have made a standalone game using a modified version of Shadow of Chernobyls engine to create Lost Alpha which is how the first STALKER game was suppost to be released.
If you like the S.T.A.L.K.E.R . games, then you might like the Metro games as well if you have not played them already. It's more of a immersive, atmospheric survival horror game than a pure survival game but it's still amazing nonetheless. Metro is definitely more linear and narrative driven like Bioshock but does have a lot of things in common with S.T.A.L.K.E.R . Metro has a heavier emphasis on atmosphere and immersion, even though the world of Metro isn't nearly as open as S.T.A.L.K.E.R . Both are Russian nuclear post-apocalyptic games with a emphasis on creepy, dark and immersive atmosphere.
Parasite Eve series anyone? I'm not really sure how solid its fanbase is nowadays but it certainly was the shit back in the late 90s with its innovative RPG slash horror slash shooter themes, amazing soundtrack and great character design.
+Ann Night Yup, PE was awesome, it's a shame they didn't continue the series. I made it all the way through the Chrysler building in PE1, one of the longest extra segments in any game
+Kinaldio I would love a remake/HD version of the original as I greatly enjoyed Parasite Eve. The only issue I have with it is how the game hasn't aged well graphically.
Here's the list if you're too lazy to write it down yourself. 10. Spec Ops: The Line (2012) 9. Mirror's Edge (2008) 8. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2010) 7. Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (2004) 6. Okami (2006) 5. Conker's Bad Fur Day (2001) 4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007) 3. Beyond Good & Evil (2003) 2. American McGee's Alice (2000) 1. Grim Fandango (1998) Honorable Mentions: Vanquish (2010) Snatcher (1988) Fatal Frame (2001) Panzer Dragoon Orta (2003)
These games are so great :) They are so charming and feel like home to me. I life in a part of germany thats mostly forest and fields just like Gothic 2 world.
Dark Cloud remains, in my mind, the most unappreciated game I've ever played. I've managed to meet maybe 3 people online that have played it, and every one of them loved it as much as I do.
I actually ended up here by accident and I really don't know much about games since I never had any but I always used to play Dark Cloud at my cousin's house. I figured since I had heard of it that it was popular. That's really awful to hear because that was my absolute favorite out of everything around back then and I'm not sure I could name something I ever liked more. It was really well done but also user friendly for someone who had no clue what they were doing. I have my own PS2 and 360 now but I don't really use them because so much stuff is first person and I always end up pointing at the sky and running into walls. Anyway, yeah, I'll shut up now but thanks for the reminder. I'll try to go track down Dark Cloud games again because those were the best.
The Evil Within had really good loading screens. Also, if they made that list, they'd need to include Bioshock (1 or 2). The music those loading screens had was great.
I like how much attention American McGee's Alice has gotten because of the sequel, Alice: Madness Returns. I have both games, and I love them so much. But then, I'm a little bit obsessed with Alice in Wonderland in general....
+narutoluva2 Same. the second is one of my favorite games of all times xD i couildnt get super into the first one though, but thats because i played the second first lol
+narutoluva2 only thing I hated in those game is that long china ceramic slide in Madness Returns with lava piles. i lost all of my hp and fell off so many times that I had to step away for a while to calm down from all the raging I was doing
I played first back when graphics were evolving damn it though I know how much better the second one is God can't it McGee! why not make the third!!!!!! I mean I know why but still
Okami, Vampire TM, and AM's Alice are incredible games. I also have fond memories of the STALKER series (especially modded), and Beyond G&E as well. I unfortunately missed most of the rest.
Where's ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Eternal Darkness, Majora's Mask, Cave Story, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Braid, Jet Set Radio, Day of Tentacle, Maniac Mansion, No More Heroes,Shenmue, Baten Kaitos, Deadly Premonition? All of them are considered cult games (not only the sales are important to consider a game as a cult game).
Wertlink5 you mentioned 14 games. this video is a top 10. do you really have to ask ''where'' they are? I don't know why people can't understand the simple concept of a top 10 list and the fact that it can't cover every single game on the planet
Is that really cult? Isn't it just a classic, highly acclaimed RPG that isn't as known with the youngins these days because half of them weren't even born when it came out.
***** Bauldur's Gate and Fallout were also well-received for their time, and they made it to modern times. People still both buy and talk about them. Heck, BG rather recently got a HD remake, at that. Planescape on the other hand despite being listed as a great influence quite often, isn't nearly as easy to acquire a copy of nowadays. As a result, you far more seldom hear about it. So, yeah, I will admit that Torment is one of the more well known forgotten classics of the genera, but it still fits the 'cult' label in my opinion.
So glad A McGee's Alice made this list. I absolutely adore both Alice and the madness returns games, being both English and a huge fan of the Lewis Carroll classic I thought they were a wonderfully macabre and gothic take on the tale. Considering the strangeness of the original the insanity interpretation is hardly surprising and, maybe I'm a bit weird but, it's definitely my favourite. (Slightly disappointed it didn't make number one though)
Also glad mirror's edge was here as well. (Even if it wasn't as high on the list as I think it should have been) That is a seriously underappreciated game and it's sequel has been far too long coming.
I agree. Alice is a great game. I have American McGees Alice , and Alice Madness Returns. I was hoping that the makers would do a third installment of Alice but they werent interested in the project.
Arx Fatalis was one of my RPG favorites of all time. - Very unique magic system. You had to find runes which you could then combine via drawing the runes in the air with your mouse....there was anything from fireballs to opening gates to hell - Open world that is basically just 1 huge megadungeon - Jumpscares and deadly traps - "Realistic" interactions -> Baking bread? Mix water and flour, then place it near a fire. - Sneaking, Magic and Melee were all equally viable - Smart puzzles (like having to get the Goblin king out of his closed room by making apple pie with ingredients that he's allergic to so he gets the shits XD) This game was essentially released around the same time as Gothic 2 I think and was made by the guys that also did Dark Messiah of Might and Magic...funnily enough Arx Fatalis was a thousand times more deep than Messiah would ever be. I would almost consider it a very early western version of Dark Souls. (Obviously not nearly as advanced...but yea, 2002)
+Jeon Soo Neo Thanks to this comment I just bought Arx Fatalis on Steam, it's already installing. Been looking for a game like this for a long time, thanks Jeon Soo Neo!
alejorag Of course you got to take into account that this game is ancient...so it's obvious that the graphics are shit ;p. But if you are into that type of RPG (and also love some nice jumpscares later into the game) you're gonna love it.
+Jeon Soo Neo Hahah, I actually love late 90's - early 00's PC graphics for some reason, specially in dark games, I think they help compose great atmospheric design, and, although not a fan of jumpscares, definitely don't mind them if they're well paced. Really looking forward to play, thanks for the suggestion again.
+Jeon Soo Neo Arx Fatalis was given to me by my sister's boyfriend in exchange for him previously getting my hope up for a broken copy of morrowind... I wouldn't change a thing, that game blew my young mind.
Legend of Dragoon was one of my favorite games back on PS1 and most I run across know nothing about it. A shame really. Had a good story, if a bit cliche and solid turn based RPG gameplay
+theMeshtar the first Parasite Eve is my absolute favorite video game! there's nothing quite like it, and it deserves a solid remake, as well as The Legend of Dragoon. i'm actually going through LoD again and it never ceases to amaze me! it was pretty ahead of its time
I'm probably one of those few people who knows what Bust-a-Groove is. And, no, not the bubble game. That's Bust-a-Move. Bust-a-Groove is a rhythm game created by Enix before it became Square Enix, and said game predates DDR. You would pick your dancer. Each level, or song, would pit you against another dancer. The object of the game was to get the camera to focus on you in order to win. There would be moments in the song where the characters would have a solo dance to try and grab attention uninterrupted.
I played the heck out of bust-a-groove. I even had an illegale version of bust-a-groove 2 which broke all to soon. Simply a great game. I still have my copy for the ps1 somewhere.
I still have my original copy of the first one, but it's been through the ringer a great number of times. I would still play the heck out of it, even when the disc was so scratched up, the music would cut out in the middle of the stage. I'm so glad I found the old tracks as I now have them on my iPod. They're just as fantastic as I remember.
There's also Amplitude for the PS2 which probably inspired Guitar Hero. Its concept isn't really that strange to most people I guess. You control a sort of a spaceship that follows down these lanes, each one being a different instrument and you had to hit the notes, just like GH. It was a lot of fun and pretty damn challenging.
I agree, if there is a list of games that deserve a second life S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is definitely #1 It just has such good backstory and original interesting elements. Sadly it never had the chance.
deltawolf1124 there is no need to remaster stalker. on highest settings it still looks better than half of that "next-gen" shit. subsequent stalker games look even better.
Im the only 1 Who miss the blood omen legacy of kain series? + the Soul reaver? Best old games and still i feel it fall to the shadow :( The Nosgoth just cant compare to the old story oriented game. :(
I don't miss them cause the history ended, and for my taste Blood Omen and Soul Reaver were much much better than Blood Omen 2, Soul Reaver 2 and Defiance
Marco Antonio Caballero Moctezuma True its ended But the story Are great it Will be a pleasure to see a nice graphics reworked version with Some extra mechanic ^^
+Marco Antonio Caballero Moctezuma The story did not end. There was still to be another part with Defiance where Kain hunted down the Old god and tied up several loose ends like Vorador. They cut that to maybe come out with a new game, which was going to be Dead Sun. Thank the maker that that was cancelled... Also, SR2 was a piece of amazing story telling. Blood Omen two was a nice continuation on the timeline and defiance connected most of the dots. It just wasn't finished.
+Csaba Tamasovics Even if Nosgoth cannot compare, Psyonix has performed a miracle with the lore behind it. Let's face it. It could be far worse. And they made an enormous effort. In my eyes, Nosgoth is the stepping stone to the true Dead Sun, the final chapter we deserve.
Psychonauts,Drakan: The Ancient Gates, and Legacy of Kain series should be on the list. These underrated gems are masterpieces! And yesss,Beyond good and evil is one of the best game of all time!
I only found the GameCube one not Sure if others were made but from the Video it looks challenging to the mind and I would not mind taking the game itself out for a test drive to see what shakes loose with the game itself Looked like alot of fun 🤔
Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magic Obscura. It was a game ahead of its time, if a developer could get their hands on it and do a remake with todays capabilities it could be the greatest game in history!
I wouldn't call it ahead of its time. Graphics were obsolete, the combat system was broken and unbalanced. But other than this, it was simply perfect! This game really needs a remake.
Graphics and combat system per se, perhaps- but some of the other pieces of its mechanics definitely were ahead, in my opinion. How many things could affect you and the world around you, including what race and gender you are, what clothes you wear, how high your intelligence is- and that feeling like someone slapped me in the face where I ended up with a broken arm on my literal first fight. The freedom you had in character creation as far as skills etc go was also something I don't really recall seeing in many games, and definitely not in any back at the time. Honestly, I'd die for this game to get a remake - this game definitely deserves it.
No love for old-school RPGs? Planescape: Torment and Arcanum are way, WAY more qualified as cult classics than SpecOps, and Earthbound could arguably top this list.
+Vocalworship Earthbound is more of a case of a half dozen weebs with an unhealthy obsession for some random game that came out of Japan. Since it's a jrpg it ratchets their obsession levels up to 11 as they grasp at the fleeting memory of their 90's childhood...the last time people actually cared about that genre. You can roll Shenmue into that as well. A basement full of fanboys crying how if only a new sequel was made it would sell 100 million copies easy because "EVERYONE" loves it! Even though it only sold a handful of copies on a DOA console 16 years ago when most of the people whining about it were still in diapers.
+JonathonTheAsshole The salt is strong in this one... I tried it, it's free to play online, but it was pretty lame. I was told the fun starts after a few hours, but that's too long for my taste. I rather watch some interpretations and theories, because the game's lore and implications are very interesting despite the game itself being a bit boring (and no, i'm not the typical CoD-kid that's only satisfied with a game that shows flashing lights and explosions every three seconds, i play strategy games, so i know what patience is).
I was literally scrolling the comment section solely to see if anyone mentioned Torment and/or Arcanum. THANK YOU. Because honestly, this so much. They're both games with not much community presence yet the moment you so much as bring either of them up around anyone who's ever played them or heard of them, the praises seem to immediately start rolling, it's amazing.
I've noticed myself that they've missed the Legacy of Kain series off of a lot of videos that it could have easily fitted into. It's one of the best series I've ever played (apart from BO2, and the pitiful excuse that was Nosgoth), so it irks me everytime.
leonardo h not that I know of. I mentioned it because it's unique (as far as I know) and the best series I've played since I started at videogames (I started when I was 3-4 yo and i'm 24 now). if you haven't played it yet, I strongly recommend it.
Mwuah Mafia 2 is pretty well known, fucking loved it but it's a shame they only had like 13 levels.. I loved the Godfather 1 better, used to play it all the time.
I recently lent Mafia II to my friend, who is quite possibly the most difficult gamer to please I have ever met. Despite being skeptical and protesting at first, he got hooked immediately and wouldn't put the game down for weeks. By far one of my favorite games to come out of 7th gen.
+i_love my_friends Well, Madness Returns is the sequel. There was already a cult following between the 11 year release. And in those 11 years, there's a ton of improvements based on the graphics and what the game engines can do. The one thing about Madness Returns I don't like is the Cheshire Cat's voice. He sounded much better and darker in the first game, but maybe because that's what I'm used to.
+i_love my_friends If they could remake the original with the same graphics I'm sure it'd make fans happy too. Really did like both games, but the sequel took more root in my mind than the first, the first was just to jarry to control sometimes.
Where's Persona 4? I played that game on PS2 when nobody knew what it was. I worked at Gamestop in PS3 gen and nobody knew who it was, even people who had managed it for years. Sure, now it's got The Golden, two arena games, two animes, a movie, a dancing game and uh... some other stuff, but that... is a FAR cry from the original PS2 game that got discontinued. Does the fact that its re-release like seven years later sparked such recognition disqualify it?
The Alice serie is just amazing! I wish we could have a third game... but the kickstarter for the movie didn't work... so EA don't want to do anything for a third game :/
Valkyrie's Profile is an all time favourite, particularly Covenant of the Plume. Limited but meaningful choices, a really grim background and a really fun tactical RPG...
Still sieges are mostly 1-2 choke points, no long range siege machines, no strategy other than infantry, charge archers shoot, no openable gates. For me sieges compared to rest of the game are just disappointing (but, being on walls on defenders side is fun).
Grim Fandango is great for anyone, not just a cult classic ;D Ofc nowadays not many have heard about it sadly, it's surely a gem in video games that should be experienced!
But shadow of the colossus had awesome reviews as well as awesome sales. This is kinda bout games with awesome reviews, that have hardcore fans, but still sold poorly.
I honestly doubt that. Or else they would not milk it that much. P1 and P2 are way better then 3 and 4 but are still some of the weaker SMT games. Give it to DDS instead.
Kanny Boy Persona 4 is the epitomy of "cult classic." It sold less than a million units of either version, and yet they made an anime of it, two spinoffs and crossovers with other games. The core SMT games are cult status as well, but Persona 4 has the strongest following of the series.
Watchmojo's list leans on mainstream, may as well put Majora's Mast. How about this list? 1. Dwarf Fortress - few thousand dedicants over a decade keeping updates coming 2. Skies of Arcadia 3. Terranigma 4. Dungeon Keeper 5. Faxanadu 6. EVO 7. Soul Blazer 8. Phantasy Star 9. Street Gangs/River City Ransom 10. Cave Story While some of these games on my list above have seen re-releases adding additional sales, for the most part they sold under 100,000 units, and usually re-releases were fan-rebuys. While some of Watchmojo's list have sold over 3 million units, which would mean games like Earthbound, Fire Emblem Awakening, Majora's Mask, Ogre Battle, Xenogears, and others with more dedicated fanbases would be more eligible.
So, you featured Earthbound in the intro, but it didn't make the list? WTF? And the game I loved in my childhood was Maniac Mansion and its sequel: Day of the Tentacle.
idgi either. I mean the EarthBound fandom is craaazy dedicated. I mean god, the MOTHER 3 fan translation should be enough proof. Oh well, at least three OTHER games I loved made it :v
+RosieSquall I think Earthbound has gone beyond being a "cult game" at this point. I mean, I played it when it came out and it was rare to find anyone that had played it, but by this point it's practically mainstream
Ikr, I always figured they weren't gonna make another and then when they announced it I didn't sit down again for like 35 minutes. My main words were "Holy s*it", and "prayer answered" haha
levintine777 To be honest i wans't sure what it meant in this situation. But all the other games i mentioned are barely know, and both God Hand and TWEWY were innovative and considered classics among fans. Ghost Tricks is just underrated tough. Sorry for being a dumbass :P
i would say Super robot wars but i dont even know if it has loyal fans like me : / heres a trailer if you dont know what it is. in short its like a fire emblem but with robots obviously ua-cam.com/video/y9phHZMev5E/v-deo.html
Ken Kaneki well...its so bad that its good, theres a lot of good stuff to find in that game, if i were you i would watch the two best friends playthrough of the game, thats golden!
There's a difference between challenging and frustrating, challenging would be a case where you have to think your way out of a situation, frustrating is when you're sliding down a ramp and have to grab a railing on the opposite side with perfect timing of you fall to your death
Good list, I would also add the following: Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Jade Empire, Brute Force, Binary Domain, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Deadly Premonition, D4, Remember Me, Dark Sector, Conan, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Alpha Protocol, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Splatterhouse (remake), MadWorld, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, Darksiders 1 and 2, The Darkness 1 and 2, Tales of Vesperia, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Singularity, Metro 2033 and Last Light (if last light could be considered "cult"), and Heavenly Sword as well.
I know! Ride to Hell is my FAVORITE game of all time! I love the repetitive and stale gameplay, off voice, bad graphics, terrible, cliché, and immature story! How can people call it one of the worst games of all time?
The Bards Tale broke the 4th wall in a perfectly executed manor and maintained a rich and humor filled story-line. Last I played it was 4 months ago. Even after 10 years I still play it at least twice each year. ROCKS ARE MY FRIENDS!!!
I don't remember... I was around 10 when I played them. Everyone was talking about Minecraft and COD and I was sitting there playing classics. I don't regret it.
Why isn't Earthbound on here? Its fan base is insane. I thought it was going to be number one for sure. You even showed it in the intro. Heck, it didn't even get an honorable mention. I call shenanigans!
I think it's excluded because Earthbound has kind of ascended past cult status since Ness and Lucas's inclusion in Smash Bros has brought them way more attention. Most of this list are games that are outstanding but often forgotten or unknown. Not all though, Conker's really has no right to be on here. You aren't a cult game when you're infamous.
Earthbound is more of a sleeper classic than a cult classic. Like the movie Vertigo. A game that was overlooked in its time, but then became known as one of the top games of the 16-bit era.
+AMR15x I was just thinking that, both of those games are top hits, maybe since Undertale is an Indie game it won't be as well known but Symphony is extremely popular, wouldn't call that a cult following
it's initial release and sales were shit, it kinda just flew under the radar. but now that word is spreading it is a highly sought after game, which lead to an interest in a sequel (it's actually a prequel) and oh god are they revamping the combat and making the platforming smoother and faster... if only i had a good rig or new console.
I'm surprised not to see The Legend of Dragoon on this list. It's something most people have never heard of, but one of the best games I've ever played. Many players would agree with me on this, but it's rare to find someone who has actually played it.
But AMR is really popular; I don't think it's much of a cult classic. It's just a classic. A lot of people didn't even know about Alice until AMR came out. :P
for example me. I didnt even knew about american mcgees alice until i watched this video long time ago and now look, i even have the cheshire cat as my pic, i love this game and i wish a third game.... and no my real name is not billy. Billy mace is just my nickname in general, hence my name Cheshire Billy
Madness Returns wasn't nearly as much of an unknown as the original. Personally I also don't think it's as good of a game. I still enjoyed it, but the last two worlds were kinda bad. Especially the creepy dollhouse.
Jacob Oehlenschlager i have tried deus ex but the controls never really feel right. pressing down a button constantly to crouch is fine on a controller but i really think autocrouch works better on pc. a visibility indicator would also be nice. everything from thief to metal gear has demonstrated that this is a crucial component in stealth while games like deus ex and E.Y.E just say you've been spotted and then does not tell you whether the enemy still knows where you are. and the share weakness of the non-leathal weapons makes stealth frustrating since lethal weapons can't take down enemies in a stealthy way. i'm not saying it's bad but i am saying that while all the buttons in PC gaming are nice using too many in certain kinds of games will make navigation in itself more difficult than the base gameplay
Cyan Cat Everything you just complained about were intentional design choices. Deus Ex is HARD, but that's part of the charm. It's not a flaw and it is superior to Alpha Protocol in every conceivable way.
Jacob Oehlenschlager deus ex is indeed deeper and more refined in the gameplya department but if i have to choose between having a deep game i can't control and a shallow one i can control i'm going to have to go with better controls. while games in themselves don't cause any violent behaviour anything that is designed in a way that frustrates the user can easily make him/her angry and the interactivity in games amplify the effect. plus i already have a pretty short temper

what are some games you would call underrated?
Earthbound, that is all.
True but I guess they didn't include it because Ness has become a lot more popular thanks to the Super Smash Bros games
Or mother 3
Also Xenoblade
La SaturnSho Mother 3 hasn't got quite the same following.
legacy of kain is a great franchise but its not popular...
STALKER is one of the most charming and atmospheric franchises ever.

ru55ianR3AP3R yup metro is really good too. It's more like cod then stalker but still really good
ru55ianR3AP3R
I only played Last Light and I loved it.
A Quarian I dont like Mods with russian voices that much. Mostly because I dont speak russsian
+TravellingStoryteller you should check out The Third Birthday then.
Bryle Ilagan 3rd Birthday is a completely different kind of game.
+Ann Night I see. It's an awesome game though
okami is a fucking masterpiece
i loved okami for ps2
Indeed
Heck yeah!

Panzer Dragoon Orta (2003)
Gothic, great RPG, but only played recently in Germany and Poland.
Love me some Gothic 1 and 2. Nothing beats running around in the Old Camp with that awesome theme playing. Good times. Good times.
These games are so great :)
They are so charming and feel like home to me. I life in a part of germany thats mostly forest and fields just like Gothic 2 world.
Yup Gothic was and still is sooooooooooo good. It's one of my fav RPG games along with Witcher and Fallout
Really? It is pretty popular in Russia too.
Gothic 3 will forever be one of my favorite games (despite all the bugs)
Viewtiful Joe anyone? One of the best beat-em-ups of all time
agreed
Yes!
That game makes me wish there was a 2D Devil May Cry spin-off.
well you can play as Dante bro once u beat the game, I know it's not perfect, but we get pretty close
Aye you're the guy that uploaded CLPPNG haha
what about Earthbound??
the game was a commercial flop and a lot of people didn't realize how awesome it was until later
Earthbound 2 is so AWESOMEEEE
+Misantrope There's no Earthbound 2
+Ivania McLean Its called mother 3
GamerBro 1928
Or Earthbound 2 :)
+Misantrope no its not officially called Earthbound two
Dark Cloud remains, in my mind, the most unappreciated game I've ever played. I've managed to meet maybe 3 people online that have played it, and every one of them loved it as much as I do.
Dark Cloud is amazing.
I smiled so hard at the fact that dark cloud was just mentioned. Dark cloud is a masterpiece.
Carter Contreras Well at least all you guys know it, seriously, why did it get so little love? I still play it to this day, it's amazing.
I agree. And have you played the sequel?? Amazing graphics, new storylines, and hours of fun!
Top 10 loading screens in games.
Skyrim got that shit
lol, Scott Shelby´s fat-ass face in Heavy Rain.
Cole Harvey I masterbate during skyrim loadingscreens
sonic 06
The Evil Within had really good loading screens. Also, if they made that list, they'd need to include Bioshock (1 or 2). The music those loading screens had was great.
Alice and Fatal Frame are probably my two favorite cult classics.
Fatal Frame was amazing.
No particular order.
Legend of Dragoon (PS 1).
Magic of Scheherazade (NES).
Shinobi (PS 2).
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Vento Aureo (PS2).
Dark Savior (Saturn).
Sengoku (arcade).
Dreamfall the Longest Journey (PC).
Muramasa the Demon Blade (Wii).
+Celty Same. I really wanted to like it, but the controls were too... old-school PC to play on my PS3. lol
+narutoluva2 only thing I hated in those game is that long china ceramic slide in Madness Returns with lava piles. i lost all of my hp and fell off so many times that I had to step away for a while to calm down from all the raging I was doing
They're both amazing games., too bad the original one is extremely outdated by now. I love Madness Returns.
I played first back when graphics were evolving damn it though I know how much better the second one is God can't it McGee! why not make the third!!!!!! I mean I know why but still
EARTHBOUND. YOU SHOWED EARTHBOUND IN THE BEGINNING, AND IT'S KNOWN AS AN AMAZING CULT CLASSIC! GAHHHHH
How about the Mother series? Who, at every chance they get, literally ask for Mother 3's official localization?
Mother 3? Isn't that Earthbound? If so, it's on the WiiU's eShop.
Bojangles 4th www.gunslot.com/files/gunslot/images/48259.jpg
Ah, deal with it.
www.quickmeme.com/img/d6/d6f91faa70cdcf749fd9e15c1fbbbbd167e940bf5d5addcdd6ba93685f5b9cac.jpg
Bojangles 4th no, Earthbound is Mother 2
Finally, someone else knows what Baten Kaitos is!
Finally, someone knows No More Heroes!
The Legend of Zelda series always sold well and has a MASSIVE fan base . All the others qualify.
Wertlink5 Woohoo, someone else enjoys Cave Story, SotC and ICO? :D
Wertlink5 you mentioned 14 games. this video is a top 10. do you really have to ask ''where'' they are? I don't know why people can't understand the simple concept of a top 10 list and the fact that it can't cover every single game on the planet
Really think Planescape: Torment should have made this list.
Glad I'm not the only one. When I saw the title of this video, I said "PST needs to be on here".
That one and Jagged Alliance 1 & 2 .... they were awesome.
Not even an honorable mention :/
Is that really cult? Isn't it just a classic, highly acclaimed RPG that isn't as known with the youngins these days because half of them weren't even born when it came out.
*****
Bauldur's Gate and Fallout were also well-received for their time, and they made it to modern times.
Yes! Probably the best rpg of all time. If this is not cult classic, then I don't know what is.
(Even if it wasn't as high on the list as I think it should have been) That is a seriously underappreciated game and it's sequel has been far too long coming.
was going to say exactly the same, Alice is awesome!
***** have you not searched about the third being on kickstarter?
I agree. Alice is a great game. I have American McGees Alice , and Alice Madness Returns. I was hoping that the makers would do a third installment of Alice but they werent interested in the project.
Wow, this was the best Top 10 I've seen in the past few months!
HEAVENLY SWORD.
Thats all i have to say
Thank you!!!
Arx Fatalis was one of my RPG favorites of all time.
- Very unique magic system. You had to find runes which you could then combine via drawing the runes in the air with your mouse....there was anything from fireballs to opening gates to hell
- Open world that is basically just 1 huge megadungeon
- Jumpscares and deadly traps
- "Realistic" interactions -> Baking bread? Mix water and flour, then place it near a fire.
- Sneaking, Magic and Melee were all equally viable
- Smart puzzles (like having to get the Goblin king out of his closed room by making apple pie with ingredients that he's allergic to so he gets the shits XD)
This game was essentially released around the same time as Gothic 2 I think and was made by the guys that also did Dark Messiah of Might and Magic...funnily enough Arx Fatalis was a thousand times more deep than Messiah would ever be.
+Jeon Soo Neo downlading it too, thanks brother
What about 'I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream'?
no lol
Legend of Dragoon was one of my favorite games back on PS1 and most I run across know nothing about it. A shame really. Had a good story, if a bit cliche and solid turn based RPG gameplay
That game is all kinds of epic.
Oh yea i love that game!
+Michael Cox YES!!!! LoD should be amongst the 10, with honorable mentions - Parasite Eve and Dino Crisis (first one)!
Agreed
I loved that game, but true, really few people knew about it. The gameplay was genious.
Goddamn STALKER is so good. I'd kill to see one of the games remastered on a cry-engine or something
Just get mods, might cause problems, but if you know what you are doing, you will get a beautiful game.
already play the misery and lost alpha mods, but remaking the game in a totally different engine would be incredibly more in depth than a mod
I agree, if there is a list of games that deserve a second life S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is definitely #1
It just has such good backstory and original interesting elements.
Sadly it never had the chance.
deltawolf1124 there is no need to remaster stalker. on highest settings it still looks better than half of that "next-gen" shit. subsequent stalker games look even better.
guguigugu sure but theres always room for improvement. like if i could play STALKER with Metro LL graphics, id cream in my pants
Jet Set Radio Future? I love that game to bits haha
So happy to see Alice on this list...she truly is an amazing cult classic which is probably why they made the amazing sequel
+Csaba Tamasovics It had like 5 sequels, how does it fit the category of "didnt sell well"?
SO happy that Alice is on this list :')
Eternal Darkness anyone??
My secret tip for those who own a NGC. :D
Came for this, was extremely disappointed. Not even a mention. ;-;
I can't believe it didn't even get an honorable mention.
I guess it was too popular?
I only found the
GameCube one not
Sure if others were made but from the
Video it looks challenging to the mind and I would not mind taking the game itself out for a test drive to see what shakes loose with the game itself
Looked like alot of fun 🤔
Spec ops; The Line should have been higher...
Even though I love that game I wouldn't really call it a underselling game
onurubu Well, cult classic isn't necessary an underselling game
Theolppoman That was the criteria though for the video.
And I think Watch Mojo should talk about Legacy of Kain: Sould Reaver. Like the best vampire time-travelling game ever.
agreed, great series
I've noticed myself that they've missed the Legacy of Kain series off of a lot of videos that it could have easily fitted into. It's one of the best series I've ever played (apart from BO2, and the pitiful excuse that was Nosgoth), so it irks me everytime.
Dieyson Gomes Are there many vampire time-travelling games out there?
leonardo h not that I know of. I mentioned it because it's unique (as far as I know) and the best series I've played since I started at videogames (I started when I was 3-4 yo and i'm 24 now). if you haven't played it yet, I strongly recommend it.
Fuckin" A
Mafia 2 one of the best video games ever made but unfortunately so many people don't know it because has a low rating
That scene where the Chinese are stabbing (forget his name) in the middle of the park though....Fuck nearly made me vomit. Awesome though!!
Great game
i fucking loved vito
Mwuah Mafia 2 is pretty well known, fucking loved it but it's a shame they only had like 13 levels.. I loved the Godfather 1 better, used to play it all the time.
I recently lent Mafia II to my friend, who is quite possibly the most difficult gamer to please I have ever met. Despite being skeptical and protesting at first, he got hooked immediately and wouldn't put the game down for weeks. By far one of my favorite games to come out of 7th gen.
American McGee's Alice is no where near as awesome as Alice: Madness Returns!!
Anthony Banks Ah i totally agree with you about the cheshire cat... i think he looks better in the madness returns :b or looks cooler
+i_love my_friends If they could remake the original with the same graphics I'm sure it'd make fans happy too. Really did like both games, but the sequel took more root in my mind than the first, the first was just to jarry to control sometimes.
FoxFireGirl1 Ah...I mean i liked both of the games, but the Madness returns game is kind of my style of game, like real-ish horror :b
+FoxFireGirl1 I think they did but it was exclusively released
Any Bulletstorm fans??
here
Fuck yeah!
here!
Alas Waggleton P. Tallylicker, I knew him well!
Me!! The only FPS i can actually play and enjoy :D (I don't like FPS' lol)
I was really happy to see Beyond Good & Evil in third, but I think that "Ico" deserves a place in that list!
American McGee's Alice is one of my absolute favorite games of all time.
...oh and the sequel is pretty good.
TIMESPLITTERS!!!!
Best shooter ^^
Bite my crunchy brown ass.
agreed
Grim fandango YES !!!! i got the remaster on PS4 and got the platinum Trophy. Great Game !
What's your id?
i got the platinum too and loved it.
Now I wanna try playing these games
World of Goo.
That game is perfection and noone ever talks about it. It's really frustrating.
Sad but true :v
Speaking of Pyschonauts...
Janelle Clay Persona games only became known due to their portable releases TBH..
ThreeDaysOfDan I"m not arguing that. I'm just shocked it isn't on cult classics.
Some of these watchmojo lists are actually pretty good. well researched. Better than other broad and generic top ten list makers.
The Alice serie is just amazing! I wish we could have a third game... but the kickstarter for the movie didn't work... so EA don't want to do anything for a third game :/
in my opinion, cult classic games tend to have the best written stories. My favorites being NIER and Pathologic. hmm i wonder why.
PSYCHONAUTS?!
Yes.
Valkyrie's Profile is an all time favourite, particularly Covenant of the Plume. Limited but meaningful choices, a really grim background and a really fun tactical RPG...
How could you not mention Eternal Darkness?
You get a like just for your profile. GOT for the win
noaxian knight Thanks. Remember: "We do not sow."
Valar Morghulis
noaxian knight Valar Dohaeris
Valar Dohaeris
Wheres Mount And Blade: Warband?
kartik skar Proper sieges? Are you joking? I like the game but sieges lack the most of all features in game.
Still sieges are mostly 1-2 choke points, no long range siege machines, no strategy other than infantry, charge archers shoot, no openable gates. For me sieges compared to rest of the game are just disappointing (but, being on walls on defenders side is fun).
Jkub
You want good seiges play Total War Rome 2
What about Jet set Radio
Ayyyyyyy
Christian Tolentino It should of been on this list☺
Christian Tolentino Ayy lmao
Grim Fandango is great for anyone, not just a cult classic ;D Ofc nowadays not many have heard about it sadly, it's surely a gem in video games that should be experienced!
Deadly Premonition??
Thought about it
doberman2yk now THAT was a good game! the ending blew me away!
100% for shure
did you see that zach?!!! "watchmojo sucks cock" IN the coffee.....never fails
Uh, shadow of the collosus anyone!? Hello!?
Isn't that game insanely popular now? Rated 10/10 by IGN?
Definitely not a cult classic. Actually pretty overrated imo. It was repetitive and had you killing innocent beasts for nothing.
MattyFizzle04 No. You are the one who insulted me for having an opinion.
But shadow of the colossus had awesome reviews as well as awesome sales. This is kinda bout games with awesome reviews, that have hardcore fans, but still sold poorly.
Overrated.
I think there should've been at least one SMT game on this list. Whether it'd be Nocturne or Persona 4.
Yeeeaah, because Persona 4 sold so bad and is so unheared of... Nocturne deserves to be here but not a Persona game.
Kanny Boy Persona 4 is still very niche. There hasn't even been a game to break a million in sales yet. Even while there's P4, there's still 1 and 2.
I honestly doubt that. Or else they would not milk it that much. P1 and P2 are way better then 3 and 4 but are still some of the weaker SMT games. Give it to DDS instead.
Kanny Boy Look on vgcharts and type in Shin Megami Tensei and you'll see P4 is only at 800,000 units, which is the best selling in the series.
1. Dwarf Fortress - few thousand dedicants over a decade keeping updates coming
2. Skies of Arcadia
3. Terranigma
4. Dungeon Keeper
5. Faxanadu
6. EVO
7. Soul Blazer
8. Phantasy Star
9. Street Gangs/River City Ransom
10. Cave Story
While some of these games on my list above have seen re-releases adding additional sales, for the most part they sold under 100,000 units, and usually re-releases were fan-rebuys.
Mirrors edge was short fun and just a perfect game.
"Short" well, i played that thing for over 150 hrs :D
Marko Stamenkovic What i meant was that i beat it in only 8 hours.I doubt it took you 150 hours for your first play through man.
isaiah nguyen
I freaking hate we have to wait so long for the sequel. But hopefully that just means it's going to be amazing.
GraphicsNow Tbh i'm surprised that we're getting a sequel. The Fact that its gonna be Open world is freaking amazing.
Ikr, I always figured they weren't gonna make another and then when they announced it I didn't sit down again for like 35 minutes. My main words were "Holy s*it", and "prayer answered" haha
What about The World Ends With You and God Hand?
Cuz persona already have legion of fans and been successful on market. Unless you don't know what "cult" is
levintine777 To be honest i wans't sure what it meant in this situation.
But all the other games i mentioned are barely know, and both God Hand and TWEWY were innovative and considered classics among fans.
Ghost Tricks is just underrated tough.
Sorry for being a dumbass :P
i would say Super robot wars but i dont even know if it has loyal fans like me : /
heres a trailer if you dont know what it is. in short its like a fire emblem but with robots obviously ua-cam.com/video/y9phHZMev5E/v-deo.html
Awesome list. Fantastic job.
Deadly premonition better be here,dammit!!!
How is that game I got it for free on PSN and people gave it mixed reviews
Ken Kaneki well...its so bad that its good, theres a lot of good stuff to find in that game, if i were you i would watch the two best friends playthrough of the game, thats golden!
Ken Kaneki It's considered The Room of video games mixed with The Happening's hokey acting. It's bad that it's good.
I just deleted it... I don't want to play a game like that
It's a very enjoyable game with friends. Playing by yourself might make it less enjoyable.
I can honestly say I freaking HATED Mirror's Edge... so frustrating...
I've beaten it in under 20 mins with 0 deaths. Might be I played to many jumping puzzles in gmod...
Same
how was it frustrating
gdoggforlife
Sure... is that why the fastest playthrough ever is 43 minutes?
There's a difference between challenging and frustrating, challenging would be a case where you have to think your way out of a situation, frustrating is when you're sliding down a ramp and have to grab a railing on the opposite side with perfect timing of you fall to your death
So glad Okami made it onto the list! Would've liked to have seen Journey too, but hey: Okami is good enough.
Good list, I would also add the following:
Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Jade Empire, Brute Force, Binary Domain, Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, Deadly Premonition, D4, Remember Me, Dark Sector, Conan, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Alpha Protocol, Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, Splatterhouse (remake), MadWorld, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, Darksiders 1 and 2, The Darkness 1 and 2, Tales of Vesperia, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Singularity, Metro 2033 and Last Light (if last light could be considered "cult"), and Heavenly Sword as well.
No The Last Remnant? No Lost Odyssey? Dafuq? Are you stupid?
Evan Czarkowski
No, you are for assuming I would list every single game in existence that's a cult classic, bruv.
When grim fandango was put at number 1, I flipped out of joy
Both System Shock games, but mostly the second one.
Def system shock 2. Kevin Levine's best game
I thought for sure SS2 would be number 1. What a disappointment that the series wasn't even mentioned.
LEGEND OF DRAGOON and CHRONO CROSS :)
***** Legend of Dragoon was all too awesome. That would def be on my list. XD
***** Legend of Dragoon was my childhood!
Legend of Dragoon DEFINITELY. Still salty over Dart not being in that PlayStation All Stars game. He's more than worth it, damn it!
+Jules Kevin Esguerra ,I DEFINITELY AGREE!!!! IM STILL WAITING FOR CHRONO BREAK!!!
+prince apoopoo i can tell you why he isnt on all stars. most people [i know at least] have no clue who that is
The Fatal Frame. It's there...I approve. :)
I'd want to see Parasite Eve and Hauting Ground or Clock Tower 3 over there though...
Brütal Legends was sooo much fun!
Yes, this was another great game by Tim Schafer and worthy of Top3
WTF where is Ride to hell retribution?!?!
And where is is CoD advanced warfare?!?
This was my first attempt at this global phenomenon called "trolling" how did I do kind sir?
I know! Ride to Hell is my FAVORITE game of all time! I love the repetitive and stale gameplay, off voice, bad graphics, terrible, cliché, and immature story! How can people call it one of the worst games of all time?
tom farrington I would rate it 6.5/10. Your Troll Fu is still far from being complete.
Marko Stamenkovic Could you please teach me the ways grand sense?
tom farrington
4/10. Too obvious.
I love Alice madness returns
The Bards Tale broke the 4th wall in a perfectly executed manor and maintained a rich and humor filled story-line. Last I played it was 4 months ago. Even after 10 years I still play it at least twice each year. ROCKS ARE MY FRIENDS!!!
Anybody knows of previous installments of Heroes of Might and Magic + Might and Magic games that 3DO made?
Heroes III and IV are on my favourite games list! II was great too!
Okabe Rintaro High-five! :D
High-five from me too :D
Okabe Rintaro :)
Which was your fav hero in all these games?
I don't remember... I was around 10 when I played them. Everyone was talking about Minecraft and COD and I was sitting there playing classics. I don't regret it.
I would throw Skies of Arcadia in there too.
Why isn't Earthbound on here? Its fan base is insane. I thought it was going to be number one for sure. You even showed it in the intro. Heck, it didn't even get an honorable mention. I call shenanigans!
Grim Fandango was the best choice, liked
not even honorable mention to Bulletstorm?!?!
great game
Anyone else heard of this game called Grand Theft Auto? I think a lot of people might dig it!!
the gta games well know so they don't count
Matthew Ford OBVIOUSLY I KNOW THAT JESUS CHRIST
Matthew Ford moron
***** why are you calling me a moron i didn't say anything to you
youre all idiots
I think that Advent Rising is also a very unappreciated game.
SO MUCH THIS!!!
That game Was awesome, totally forgot about it :D
That game was broken. Good soundtrack
Intro sold me. Will try it again
I can mention "Twinsen's Odyssey - LBA 2" . A true classic! I strongly recommend it!
Earthbound or Mother 3 should have been on the list.
No mention of Earthbound at all means you failed this top 10.
OKAAAAMMMMIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!
One of the BEST games I have ever played, YES!
Rule of Rose has one of the most dedicated communities I have ever seen
Shenmue?
Shenmue sold well.
Pathologic, Braid, Undertale, Lisa, The World Ends With You, Symphony of the Night, Planescape: Torment etc.
+Stacy Mitchell seriously? undertale isn't a cult classic. symphony of the night is castlevania which is...hard to say.
+Stacy Mitchell more people should play Lisa
+Stacy Mitchell hell yeah TWEWY!
+AMR15x I was just thinking that, both of those games are top hits, maybe since Undertale is an Indie game it won't be as well known but Symphony is extremely popular, wouldn't call that a cult following
Symphony of the Night is way too popular, and Braid isn't even popular enough for a cult classic (although Braid is my favorite PSN download)
At over two million copies sold and a sequel on the way, how is mirror's edge a 'cult' classic?
it's initial release and sales were shit, it kinda just flew under the radar. but now that word is spreading it is a highly sought after game, which lead to an interest in a sequel (it's actually a prequel) and oh god are they revamping the combat and making the platforming smoother and faster... if only i had a good rig or new console.
It didn't get very many sales at release and/or very high reviews.
I'm surprised not to see The Legend of Dragoon on this list. It's something most people have never heard of, but one of the best games I've ever played. Many players would agree with me on this, but it's rare to find someone who has actually played it.
Come on, OFF? That game was awesome. And I think Alice: The Madness Returns should have been in place of that other Alice game.
IKR
Madness Returns wasn't nearly as much of an unknown as the original. Personally I also don't think it's as good of a game. I still enjoyed it, but the last two worlds were kinda bad. Especially the creepy dollhouse.
OgreSamanosuke the last two stages were my favorites
alpa protocol
Has a lotta flaws
Cyan Cat Okay, regardless there are games that do this concept better. Most notably Deus Ex (2000).
Deadly Premonition? The gameplay was shit, but the story was fantastic
Couldn't believe that Deadly Premonition didn't make the list! That's the prime example of a cult classic
The voice acting, the beautiful voice acting~
Memories~~
Yes
The Grim Reaper from Conker's Bad Fur Day never fails to crack me up
