    Sometime after Fulgrim was discovered:
Big E: Fulgrim, my son, the Emperor’s Children have been decimated over the years due to gene-seed poisoning. You must help replenish their stocks so that they may stave off annihilation.
Fulgrim: say no more father, it shall be done.
*comes back and presents a chalice full of “gene seed” to the Emperor*
    Big E: ...
    Fulgrim:....
Big E: son, why is it white?
Fulgrim: I mean, isn’t it always this color?
    Big E: usually it’s red.
Fulgrim: if it was red, then there would definitely be problems. Now let’s get this to an apothecary, it took me all night to make this.
Big E: well, at least you’re not as bad as Angron.
Fulgrim: also, father, do you think Ferrus Manus would mind my aid during his gene-seed extraction? I imagine those metal hands are quite uncomfortable.

The Exorcists are my favorite chapter, so I'll explain what their deal is.
    1. The chapter was founded by members of the Ordo Mallaeus, so they have backing from the Inqusition (this is how they get away with their boarderline heretical practices)
    2. Their "possession therapy", while extremely dangerous, causes their marines to develop a strong resistance to daemonic enfluence and even gain the ability to "camoflauge" their presence in the Warp like a Blank, making themselves undetectable by daemons and psykers.
    3. The Exorists were originally the only successor chapter of the Grey Knights, but were recently retconned into being Imperial Fist successors, which gives them a really funny relationship with the Black Templars.

there is a hidden comedy gold about all these primaris who were send to Exorcists and instead of welcoming they probably just recieved a bullet in a head because it would faster to just kill them, harvest their geneseed and jam it into some scout than risking possesion with fully developed marine. Granted, in my head canon most first arrived primaris ended up as involuntary geneseed donors but in case of Exorcist it should be made canon just to poke some fun of the lore butchery known as "Cawl just pulled a million improved space marines out of his ass and dont ask about it"

TBF, the Blood Angels perform all the surgeries (minus the one where the Black Carapace is implanted) on their recruits while they're in their coffins. The go in as 10-13 yo kiddos and come out a year later as a hulking mass of himbo (or as a corpse, or a raving lunatic of a himbo). So Iron Hands recruit in a couple ways.
1)The potential recruit makes a trek through the planet to a special event that takes place occasionally where the Iron Hands specifically set up recruitment. This, I believe is a trial by combat where all the potentials fight to the death until however many the Iron Hands want remains.
2)They will forcefully take candidates from the planet who show strength. This happens because they roll around in their giant Land Behemoths (they don't have a chapter monastery). They rarely cross paths with the clans of Medusa, but when it does happen either the clan will bow in reverence, or, and this isn't uncommon, the clan will outright attack the Behemoth to raid it for supplies. Because Medusa is Australia on crack. Everything trying to kill you including the planet itself. Supplies are scarce to say the least. This is incredibly one sided as you can imagine. However, if any of these people actually make it onto the Behemoth, the Iron Hands will capture them and put them on ice until the next recruitment ritual.
The last step to becoming an Iron Hand is you and your new brothers are, stripped of armour and weapons, put into a lavish room with wine and fine dining and a human servant who will wait upon you. This is a ruse, naturally, as the weakest of the battle brothers will eventually pull a bolter out of nowhere. He and the human servant will then try to kill the remaining recruits. So either kill them both or die. This final test is done to teach that at any moment you can be betrayed even by those you consider close to you. Aka instilling into the recruit the same feeling Ferrus had when Fulgrim betrayed him.
Edit: So it just occurred to me, so I figured I'd throw in a cheeky edit, that I forgot to mention something very crucial. Context, Iron Hands are only vaguely codex compliant. They have 10 "Clan Companies". Each functions similarly to how you might see a typical company, however there are key differences. Such as, each Clan houses their own stock of weapons, vehicles, and even terminator armour. In fact, you will NEVER see someone from Clan Haarmek (5th company) driving a, ie, Rhino from Raukaan (3rd company). If the Iron Hands believed in heresy, this would be considered as such as each weapon, vehicle, and piece of armour is considered as a gift from Ferrus himself to that clan.
I bring this up because it shows you just how fiercely independent each clan is from each other. To the point they are practically mini-chapters in and of themselves. Now, the lore here has changed a bit. In the old days each clan recruited and trained their own recruits. Now, everyone starts their training in Clan Dorrvok's (10th company's) care and upon graduationto full battle brother will be sent back to their original clan. I do believe each clan still recruits separately from each other. This would explain potential discrepancies from what I've mentioned here and what some may have read in a White Dwarf index from way back when. This is probably the most unique thing the Iron Hands do as far as recruits since, to my knowledge, everyone else functions on a strict 10th scout promotion up to 1st Veteran.

It kind of cracks me up that the super zealous Black Templars have one of the most "normal" recruitment processess where after a recruit receives their geneseed and proves themselves in training, they just, essentially, become a regular ole squire until their master is like, "Yeah, you can rank up now. You've earned it."

  • @Yormolch
    @Yormolch 3 роки тому +220

Throwing our dear Salamanders under the bus just like that.
Salamanders take their initiates at the age of around six into their forges, where they just learn from their assigned teachers. Blacksmithing is their first and most important lesson. They actually start implantation before the actual training (those organs give them a better chance at survival) and make sure (as much as they can), that initiates are compatible with the prossedure/can endure the harsh training. Still, a lot of recruites die, but their training is not as loveless and unforgiving as in other chapters, after all, another one of their most important lessons is compassion and to be there, for the normal citisens of the imperium. During the final phases of the initiation, all aspirants/neophytes must naturally succeed in the hardest task: be like Vulkan. Which means to face the same challenges he did in his youth. Walk over rocks that float on lava, make a wonderfull piece of armor or weapon in a melting hot forge, probably defeat some drukhari or something (as scouts) and then as the final step, they have to kill a Salamander (basically a big ol dinosaur, ranging from Triceratops, over Tyrannosaurus and giant Lava-Krokodiles to Pterodactyls) and most of them wear a piece of that Salamanders skin on their armor for the rest of their lifes.

One: Primaris Marines have a few extra organs: the Sinew Coils (which reinforces the sinews making the marine stronger and adding an extra layer of defense), the Magnificat (which secretes hormones to increase the body's growth function and enhance some of the other implants), and the Belisarian Furnace (Named after Cawl, obviously. Connects to both hearts and only activates when the marine is in dire need. Basically releases a fuck-ton of chemicals that increases their combat prowess while also pushing their healing factor into overdrive.)
Two: You forgot the best part of the Black Carapace: they flay the poor fucker alive to implant it while the neophyte is still awake and aware.

If I remember right, the Death Spectres get to do their dying everytime they receive a promotion. Becoming the Chapter Master would mean dying and willing themselves back to life some half dosen times, at least. If a veteran firstborn decides to become a Primaris and risks dying on operating table? No problem, we have done this before.
Also, initiation of the Iron Hands requires amputation of hand and replacing it with prosthetic. Every one of them is literally an Iron Hand and they just keep adding cybernetics and replacing limbs of their own volition.
As far as malfunctioning organs go, Imperial Fists can't spit poison or go into hibernation. Both Raven Guard and Salamanders are stuck with one skin colour, chalk and coal respectively. These are ultimately a minor issue, so they are not in immediate risk of not being able to fight.
Another thing to notice are mutations in Geneseed, which could Mark a Chapter do immediate purge. One Chapter developed an ability to catch spontaniously fire and was put to death. Black Dragons may have Wolverine Claw coming from their wrists, but Inquisition has been a bit busy to make judgement about that. Then there's the Soul Drinkers...

    • @TheVoltage2

In regards to the Black Dragons, the reason why they haven't been called out yet is because they game the system. Not all brothers of the BDs display any of the bone growths of the majority of the chapter. These brothers are incredibly important to the chapter as their geneseed is what the BDs offer up to the mechanicus whenever they are required to tithe for the regular inspections on geneseed stability and purity. They pass the purity test every time because of this, so the inquisition leaves them alone even if they squint their eyes every time.

late af but iron hands recruitment time
    things to note:
    1. the iron hands are organized into 10 100 marine clans, each of which can act as a mini chapter with its own dreadnoughts, vehicles, servitors, marines, and leaders and the role of chapter master semi does not exist instead being lead by roughly 40 iron fathers
    2. each clan instead of having a big fortress monastery they have 10 big mobile land fortresses, 1 for each clan that roams around the waste of their home planet of medusa
    3. there are a few conflicting sources on a few parts
    4. if you fail any steps on this you get turned to a servitor
    5. twice every 10 years medusa experiences whats called the “iron moon” which is basically a fancy eclipse
    recruitment
    1. first to ever be considered you have to participate in a form of combat test/game that takes place on the 1 hive city of medusa called meduson where young members of the human clans that roam medusa will be put in cages with spears or bare hands against the monsters native to the planet, during this members of different clans will roam around looking at the competitors and may select a handful to become recruits
    2. after you've been selected your brought onto the mobile fortress of which every clan picked you and your training starts with you being thrown out into the waste of medusa and told to make your way back to your fortress (which will be moving around this whole time) while also being hunted by other iron hands some of which will be full members others will be neophytes that are farther along the path of implants and such
    3. along the way you are taught to not trust the other members wether they be hunter or hunted they are out to win, kill them if needed but if they make it back first they are better then you, there is no strong sense of brotherhood taught they are taught to not trust and to always have their head on a swivel and to sleep with their eyes open (not literally basically taught to be paranoid and untrusting)
    4. between the times your dumped out into the cold hells cape you’ll also be shown how to shoot, fight, and other normal space marine things and you also may be introduced to the culture of your clan and taught the story of Ferrus Manus how he defeated the silver wyrm and wore its metal skin over his arms and how he died after putting trust in his brother Fulgrim. along with the inherent weakness of the flesh and the power and strength of iron and metal
    5. if at any point of this you succeed in the trials but end up loosing a limb it will be replaced with a metal cybernetic prosthetic
    6. after all of this then you enter the final trial, you and all the surviving neophytes are brought into a room, this room is beautiful in every way, art of the walls, food and drink of the table, furniture around the room to sit BUT somewhere in the room there is a gun hidden and if you find it your meant to kill the others in the room (they are your competition after all they would do the same to you, you cant let them find it they will kill you so you kill them first)
    7. after the person who found the gun is killed or has killed the others the Iron Father of the clan (basically a mic of a chaplain and a tech marine) will come into the room and welcome the surviving members into the clan as full marines now you will do the final trial of sticking your left hand into lava up to your shoulder till it melts away to be replaced with a metal arm in a form of mirroring how Ferrus got his metal hands (unless your Clan Raukaan in which case iron father fierros just cuts it off but thats boring clan garrsak is life)
    8. you also have something implanted into your spine that will cause you to be semi linked to the other members of your clan allowing you to communicate to members of equal and lower rank through a signal this is how the iron hands fight so calculated
I know bricky bashes the iron hands at basically every chance but they are still dope even if GW and bricky dont agree lmao

Dictionaries merely report the most used definitions of words for reference. Language evolves and changes, slang becomes common use, and definitions change over time. Additionally, most dictionaries in english only report the definitions of words in standard american english or standard british english (or both), but those are not the only english dialects out there (or even the most widely spoken), and these dialects and vernaculars DEEPLY affect the evolution of language but are almost totally undocumented until very recently. So yes "literally" has also had its dictionary definition changed to also be a synonym of "figuratively" because that's how people were using the word. The dictionary doesnt decided language. Language decides the definition.

Allows the Space Marine to enter a state of SUS-pended AN-imation when critically wounded, keeping them alive until medical help arrives. The blood angels, after passing a bunch of trials, get a sip of Sanguinius's blood then pass out and get placed in a sarcophagus. For the next year they basically have a really bad trip with Sanguinius's memories and get all their extra organs added (except for the black carapace). After a year they emerge sexy as hell and looking like papa sang, but some of them go insane and succumb to the black rage and/or red thirst (one of Dante's fellow initiates came out with talons and bright red skin, then went full nosferatu on a servitor before getting his head blown off by a chaplain). During Dante's initiation, he was screaming about the Horus heresy/great crusade and thrashing about and damaged the inside of his sarcophagus; the chaplains were expecting to have to kill him the moment he emerged, but he came out completely sane.
After that ordeal they get sent to blood angels art school.

Decently sure that would just produce a normal human. The space marine’s dna isn’t modified when he becomes a marine, since the geneseed organs are more like implants, so if a space marine did have a baby then the baby would be normal.
Now a weird case would happen if the father was a Custodian (assuming they can still reproduce), since their dna is modified extensively.

So two of my favorite recruitment process for space marine chapters would probably be the Charcharadon Astra and the Minotaurs. Both simplistic and neat.
The Charcharadons, since they’re completely fleet based, will tear apart their opponents ships, find any potential recruits amongst the wreckage, then brainwash them and just put them through the ropes.
The Minotaurs do something very similar with brainwashing and what not, but it’s rumored that they use enhanced growth chemicals to just refill stock even faster. Which a lot of chapters don’t agree with, but the Minotaurs just don’t care.
I could be wrong on some of these, haven’t read up on them in a while
Edit: I’ve done further research on the Carcharodons. They are literally sanctioned to raid and pillage imperial worlds, in something called the Red Tithe, which is how they recruit and procure more resources.

    Hiya, english major here
for the whole "definition of 'literally'" thing, yes, it was changed to have a figurative use, however it maintains its traditional meaning as its primary use. Language isn't nearly as rigid as people assume, and the meaning of words can change drastically over time. for this reason, most dictionaries are *descriptive* texts, meaning they describe how a word is used in common parlance rather than being the ultimate authority on what a word *should* mean.

Knowing the termininology from my A&P, this is hilarious. For those that wanna know, Epiphyseal (Epi-fease-ee-ahl) fusion is a strengthening of the bones basically on its growth plate to make super-strong bones compared to the average human. Haemastamen (Ha-eem-must-amen) functionally makes the blood able to transport O2 and CO2 and an increased rate, which is why their blood is wicked bright red. Most of the organs are, very bleeding edge MAYBE possible things the human body can do sometimes, but 40k of course just takes all the abilities to 11.

So the Sus-an Membrane is what allows a SM to enter a state of hibernation or suspended animation, requiring almost no resources to stay alive and even being able to survive fatal injury. It takes chemical therapy and extended psycho-indoctrination to be able to use it, and combined with the Mucranoid it could help a SM stay alive in the void of space. For example, if he were to be vented out from the airlock of a spaceship, on account of him being SSSSSUS

People blame them for being emotionless, but that's not a choice, it's a necessity. They need to be pure to fight the demon hordes and not get corrupted, emotions are the gateway to the c***s gods. Being an astartes is just as much of a curse as it is a gift, a punishment as much as a privilege, because nothing is free.

A Chapter's homeworld influences the chapter a lot through their recruits. The Mortifactors' homeworld is a world of little sunlight, next to no farming, unlivable surface, and tunnel tribes. Their recruits turned the Chapter into superstitious cannibals who worship death, keep their dead's skeletons in their Fortress Monastery, ritualistically eat worthy foes, mount skulls everywhere, and prefer wielding scythes.
Did I mention the Mortifactors are an Ultramarines successor chapter, and a Second Founding one at that? The Founding Chapter Master apparently picked the world using the Emperor's Tarot. Still loyal somehow, with frequent Inquisition checks.

4:00 I mean language changes over time, based on usage. Nimrod was a great hunter in the Bible, but because of BUGS BUNNY of all things used it sarcastically to Elmer Fudd to mock him, it has entered common usage that such that if someone were to call you a nimrod, you would not think they are complimenting your refined tracking and hunting skills. The "rules" and "meaning" of words are not immutable and written in stone. They are simply combinations of letters and sounds that are given meaning by those using them and those listening/reading them. If for whatever reason those meanings shift, then what is most important is that the meaning is mutually intelligible, not whether it has the same meaning as was written in a dictionary 50 years ago.
