Reason for that is, that Dark Forces uses a 2.5D engine and not a true 3D engine like Quake does. So places can not be above or below each other and in reality you are jumping through a portal to a different place (watch the texture above the lever).
Yup, that hallway is going through empty space & and is conveniently impossible, but this is an Alien's Spaceship, & UFOs are said to have giant sprawling interiors w/ a 13ft diameter exterior.

Jan Ors is only in the game in memoriam of Jynn Erso (dead at this point in time).
I absolutely hated this mission as a kid. Tied with the third mission (sewers of Anoat) for the worst one because of having to fight kell dragons barehanded and all the mines!
