The Golden Rule of Staying On Beat While Rapping

- In this rap tutorial, we will learn a simple rule that will help us stay on beat, whenever we write rap lyrics or make songs where we sing. Being offbeat is a very challenging place to be, so I hope this simple tip helps you improve your skills.

Beautifully explained! Thank you. I'm now hearing all kinds of patterns in songs and identifying bars really nicely. I realize how structured music is and it's all about rythym/patterns. It really helps.
Great to hear! :)
@@RappingManualYT, I do have one question that's come up during my writing. I notice that I usually always end all my lines at the final snare drum before the bar restarts. However, I've noticed that a lot of professional rappers don't always end their line on the snare as I've been doing it yet they still remain beat. For example, each of my rhymed lines will end in the 4th drum that being the final snare, for example: ''I'm still going to be THERE'' ''Know that I'll always CARE''. But a lot of rap songs I hear don't seem to rely on having their rhymed words always hit the final snare. I wonder if I'm doing something incorrectly?
@@northwestwind85 well, not that it is incorrect, you just want spill over so your flow is dynamic and interesting. Its not hard to do but makes a big difference. Just start in the middle of the bar and end on the first beat of the next bar as a starter. Once you get good at that, you can do that, then end on beat 4, then flow over a full couplet and so on.

Explained as easily as you can, I'm sure it will clear the concept for beginners, before moving to advance it is really necessary to learn the basics, the advance rapping has a whole another story.
How does advance in music look like?

Man I’ve only just started watching your videos. I’ve been writing 10 plus years but my bars haven’t ever had structure. Counting 16 bars is still foreign to me. The thing I find hardest is right hooks/chorus’s, melody’s, and breath work if that makes sense. Your videos are simplistic and easily understandable! They’ve helped me so much over my 4 or so days watching. Thank you bro!
@ten I haven’t man. I haven’t looked either. Have had to put the pen down for the past few months. I wrote a few verses the day before yesterday, but didn’t write a hook. A lot of the stuff I write is on the free verse side of things. I know there’s a tonne of tutorials on google and other search engines that can help. I really should of come here before I started writing the other day and in all honesty I forgot about this video 😂🤦🏻♂️
Bro I used to have this problem of not being able to write a hook what I recommend you do is write like a 20 bar verse and then take 8 catchy bars you find out that verse and make that your hook I learned very quickly nautrally how to make hooks so you can do it bro
@@kingdemonte7346 that’s a good idea man! I think that thought actually crossed my mind for a brief second once or twice but never really took it further than that. The hooks I do right are pretty basic and repetitive, but I can only get a good one going very rarely. Thanks for the input and knowledge 👊

I feel the same way! Been writing but never had structure. Big difference for sure!
2:07 sounds still good tho ngl
lol
Man it's crazy how just adding or removing a single syllable can change the entire flow and cadence. I play with it so much. And some rappers make it look effortless. Eminem puts rhymes all over that 4 count. Most rappers find it easier to place the rhymes at the 4th beat only
Eminem also says nothing worth listening too,all style and no content.
Your tutorials are super clear and you got a dope voice. Get it. Even though I've been rapping for a long time, I enjoy the basics so much, I enjoy the basics and yours is one of the easiest to follow.
So happy to hear that you're enjoying the content. I do try to make them as simple and straight to the point as possible, so it's awesome when someone appreciates that. : )

Ugh im still really stuck, i can only freestyle rap im struggling a lot with writing meaningful bars to beats. Like even after scatting and mumbling and placing vowels. I have no idea how to fit the words in...
The easiest way is to go to your fav songs and read the lyrics. Don't focus on the rhymes, focus on the word selection for the filler. You will realize that some words go together while others don't. So read 3 songs a day and then once you start writing, your bar filler will have a flavor of what you have read. You will get it man, just stick with it and keep tinkering.

Exactly I only got talent of rapping buh can’t make a song
Is it just me or does the "off-beat flow" (1:48) sound pretty good too? Especially the first half of the line has a nice delivery. I see the second half feels weird because castle is emphasized weird but in general its an interesting flow.
Lol, very unintended, but hey - whatever floats your bubble man. Hope you found that vid helpful! Thank you for watching
Bro it's terrible off beat
on beat feels like it's 2020. off beat feels like it's 1995
The thing about the pockets in between each beat is there's A LOT of different rhythms within those spaces that u can manipulate. The most common flows are the ones that land directly on beat but in more advanced levels of rappin the "offbeat" version can actually sound just as good or better if u can hear the unheard beats in between. When u really get into the advanced levels of flow u can mix it up & go from directly landing your words on each beat, to bringing out the unheard beats in between each beat with your flow, & start flowing in & out/Off & on the beat altho technically all of it will still be on beat it's just that you are utilizing more complicated spaces to flow within as well as the common 1,2,3,4 beats. Crooked I from Slaughterhouse is REALLY good at this. So is Eminem. It's so many ways to flow on, or around each beat. Depending on your creativity & how versatile u can flow (fast, slow, double-time etc) u can use your voice as an instrument to fill in spaces between the beats. That can help make u stand out since u won't be rapping using the same flows as everybody else. Cuz u could take what he did offbeat & make that shit sound real good. For instance, if he chose the offbeat flow he would've needed to remove some syllables so he could've said "Live like a King, buy myself a castle" or he could've said "Live like I'ma king ("i am" won't fit if u come in after the 1st beat cuz since u come in late, u have to either use less syllables, or shift the speed of your flow in some places to stay on beat. Rap is dope man. & i loooooove that this channel exist! I'm over here nerding out cuz i love this channel & just the science/art of rap in general. Thank God for Hip-Hop! I been writing raps for 25 yrs cuz hip-hop changed my life!
Being a rapper is harder than you may think, as this video shows ua-cam.com/video/heLTOxTuc5Y/v-deo.html
It comes to an individual naturally, don't force a style. Make your own.
Most people don't know how really crucial is this. I do write lyrics but, knowing the art of where to put the syllables in the beat is something else. Thank you.
That was really great & it's very easy to implement! I am watching a lot of videos on this topic to research a little bit to further improve& wanted to let you know that this one is my favourite so far! I like the notion that offbeat is just a variation of speed fillers once you know what on beat really means. The way you explain is also just brilliant.

Thank you so much! I will forward it to a „good friend“ of mine because he really, really needs it. Maybe, with some luck he will be finally able to stay on beat 🙏🏼
Its such easy ways, thanks dude
Total genius. Thanks
bru u nailed it couldnt have explained it any better
the reason "live like i am a king, buy myself a castle" sounded bad is because of the amount of syllables but mainly the word you sink with the beat. You should always sink the stressed syllable of a word. So in 'castle', the first syllable (ca-) is stressed so making the beat sink on (-stle) would sound off. So if we replace Castle with Car and add a syllable before it to substitute the syllable we just took away, it would go "l̍ive like i a̍m a king, b̍uy myself a new c̍ar" (with a line above each word thats on the beat).
I need this so much

“Live like a king, buy myself castle”
Tupacs been real quiet since this dropped
This is basically the same thing as how you're taught to practice rhythm. Instead of the "unh unh unh unh" sounds like this, I learned by actually counting the beat out, "one two three four". The "filler" part is just subdivision of the beat, adding in random eighth notes ("one and two and three four"), then moving on to faster sixteenth notes ("one ee and uh two and three and uh four").
I appreciate you so much
You deserve millions of suscribers for what u r
