Recording a SP-404 MKII → Reel-to-Reel Beat Tape [Akai X-200D] // "Dilapidated Tape" EP

- Taking a handful of beats I made on the Roland SP-404MKII and throwing them onto an Akai X-200D Reel-to-Reel tape deck. The audio you're listening to is the playback from tape of this session without any post production mastering.

The SP-404 MK2 is plugged directly into the Akai X-200D. This deck is mid-1970's tech so it definitely has some "personality" it lends to the sound which ultimately helps tie the joints together sonically.
To briefly breakdown my workflow thus far, I made all these beats in the Pattern Sequencer, put them all together in a Pattern Chain, then I resampled that Pattern Chain to a pad. BUT, when I did this, I actually did it twice. First I resampled just the drums of the whole beat to a pad then resampled the other layers to another pad....so 4 beats = 2 pads which are Pad Linked together. The left-most row are my drums and the next row are the samples...as you can see by what is orange and what is green, I've assigned the samples to Bus 1 and the Drums to Bus 2. In Effect Settings I have the Buses set to Parallel mode and have no effects on Buses 3/4.

I finally just got a replacement reel for my akai. Mine is insanely noisy but this sounds great!
That’s the thing with old tech, you never know what mood it’s gonna be in when you turn it on…my right channel is has more hiss n seems to compress a little more than the left…no idea why 🤷🏻♂️

Thanks! This machines is wicked af. From memory the first two beats had cass or 404 sim on the samples before I chopped them. When putting them to tape in this session there was nothing on bus 3/4.

Really digging the jam! (Cheers too 🍻). My dad had almost the same Akai r2r model in the 70s, he trashed it years later 😓. Anyway, your technique of bouncing the drums and samples to different pads is clever, as they can benefit from being treated with different FX. Would this allow to do some kind of sidechaining FX, with the drums somehow ducking the sample ? If you ever make a video showing your process, I’ll watch it for sure.

Cheers! I’ve been recording to tape then recording that playback into my daw. That’s a good question, I’ve never monitored the Line Out while recording coz I just listen thru the phones out, got me curious - I’ll find out if it does!

Aiiiight, I FINALLY got a chance to test this...so the Line Out while recording in the Line In bypassing the tape...it doesn't to me sound like the audio from the playback head while recording to tape...so I def have to recording to tape then play back for that...I had this question in the back of my mind for at least a month!
